Work and Stay in Canada Earn money while you study and gain Canadian work experience. International students can work both on and off campus. Every semester, we offer information sessions where you can ask questions and find out about work and volunteer opportunities.

Services & Admission From the first time you contact North Island College to the day you graduate, we are here to help you reach your goals. Services & Support Cultural Activities

Off-Campus Housing

Canadian and international Cultural Assistants are a big part of student life at North Island College. They organize activities, trips, parties, and events, and make it easy for international students to feel at home.

Students can visit www.nic.och101.com to browse our Off-Campus Student Housing List. International students often find apartments or share houses with other students after they have settled in the community. Short-term accommodation is also available at hotels, hostels, and bed and breakfasts. The cost for a private one-bedroom apartment can be as low as $600 per month.

Comox Valley Aquatic Centre A full-service recreation centre, including swimming pool, showers, steam room, and weight training gym, is just steps from our Comox Valley campus. The student drop-in fee is $30 for ten visits.

Educational Advising After you receive your Letter of Acceptance, our Student Advisors will communicate with you by email to help you choose courses before arriving in Canada. They can also answer your questions about programs and help create an educational plan based on your specific needs and career goals.

Employment Resource Centre At the Employment Resource Centre, students can browse for student work and career postings, get help creating a Canadian-style resume, practice interview skills, and much more.

Homestay Program Many of our international students choose to live with a Canadian host family through our Homestay program, which matches international students with Canadian families. Students are provided their own private bedroom and an area to study while sharing the rest of the house with the family. The cost is $750 per month, plus a one-time $250 placement fee.

Paid Work Experience Co-operative Education (Co-op) gives students the opportunity to combine their academic study with paid employment in a relevant field. The following programs offer a Co-op component: Adventure Tourism Management diploma, Tourism & Hospitality Management diploma, Business Administration diploma, and the Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

Peer Tutoring Free tutoring is available at the Comox Valley campus for many courses, including University Studies, English as a Second Language, and Upgrading.

To qualify for admission to North Island College you must meet the following requirements:

Study permits are required for international students who plan to study in Canada for longer than six months. Once you have received your Letter of Acceptance or Conditional Letter of Acceptance from North Island College, you can apply for a study permit. For more information on study permit requirements to study in Canada, visit www.cic.gc.ca.

ESL programs: 1. Applicants must be 18* years of age and a high school graduate. TOEFL or IELTS scores are not required. All other programs (academic, career, trades): 1. Applicants must be 18* years of age and a high school graduate. 2. Meet other academic and admission requirements for their chosen program. For example: Grade 11 math for many programs. 3. English is the language of instruction. To be admitted to the college, you must meet the minimum English requirements for the program. You may complete the NIC English Language Program, submit Grade 12 English results, TOEFL 550 or CBT 213 or iBT 80 with no section below 19, IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5, CAEL 60, or Cambridge Advanced or First Certificate with a minimum ‘B’ grade.

Payment & Deadlines Students are required to submit their first term fees no later than 30 days after the date on their Letter of Invitation from North Island College. Tuition and fees may be paid by certified cheque in Canadian funds, credit card, postal money order, or bank wire. Complete admission requirements If we have received all your required documents, we will send you a Letter of Invitation via email within two weeks. The letter will outline your required first term fees and deadline for submission.
