Take a look at the exciting new courses being offered. From painting courses like the Saturday Watercolours Series with Marilyn Timms or Acrylic Painting for Beginners with Channing Holland to the more in-depth Survey of Life Drawing with Clive Powsey, there is something for every level of skill.

Beaded Jewellery: Second Level (GENI-1236)

Craft During this workshop you will learn to do Viking Knit weaves and how to incorporate these into your jewellery. Expect to make a small piece of jewellery using your new skill.

Continue to explore the different types of jewellery construction and ways of designing, connecting, and finishing jewellery. You will also look at types of beads and findings that make jewellery more interesting. In this second level, you will be learning how to do single and double Viking Knit weaves and how to incorporate it into your jewellery.

Silver Jewellery Making - Beginner (GENI-1205) Learn the skills required to create your own jewellery with basic tools and equipment from goldsmith Jan Hellerud. She works with semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls, turquoise, amber, coral, jasper, and faceted stones. She prefers to work in sterling silver and semi precious stones. She sells her work at several shows: Woodland Gardens in the Spring and Fall Shows, Simms Park on Saturdays, Pier Street Market on Sundays, and at the Filberg Festival.

Meg Burgess Instructor, Intro to Clay GENI-1605

Meg obtained her BA in Ceramics at Camberwell School of Art, London, England. She emigrated with her family in 1982 and established Little River Pottery in Comox. She has been a member of the Fired Up group of potters for the past 25 years, also the Potters Guild of B.C., the Crafts Association of B.C. and the Comox Valley Potters. Exhibitions of her work this year took place in Toronto and London, Ontario. Meg’s fascination with clay continues and so does her journey of creating and exploring the wonderful qualities of clay, combined with the inspiration that is fueled by her beautiful surroundings on Vancouver Island.

This workshop is for artisans and entrepreneurs. It provides an introduction to screen printing basics used in the printing of flat graphics, three-dimensional products and multicolour garment/textile printing. This is an excellent course if you have little access to the process of screen printing and want an opportunity to bring some artistic ideas to life on a poster, t-shirt, dress, wood, glass, metal... or all of them! Learn how to convert your hand-drawn or computer designed work into films and then stencils on screens. Discover how to use screen printing—a multifaceted imaging and manufacturing process- to imprint different materials with graphic images.

After two days, you will be confidently making screens and printing your art on paper, shirts, or a range of materials.

Participants are encouraged to bring printing projects to complete during the open studio portion of the training.

Introducing Screen Printing to Your School (GENI-1670) This intensive study program is designed for individuals who want to start or improve a screen printing program in a school or community studio setting. It is a perfect course for art teachers or graphics instructors that provides proven guidelines on how to go about introducing this amazing printing process to your school and your students. Learn updated methods and receive hands-on training using water-based inks for both textile and flat graphic printing.

Discover low budget solutions including how to make your vacuum tables, t-shirt jigs and an exposing system in shop class. screen printing is a great catalyst for entrepreneurial activities, integrating computer design with hands-on art and object making. It is capable of capturing the imagination of fringe students because it is used to produce so many items important to youth: t-shirts, posters, CDs, stickers, skateboards—all the way to touch screens, solar cells, electronics, and much more. This course will also be of interest to artisans interested in introducing fundamental screen printing techniques to support marketing strategies, product prototyping and development of localized manufacturing. The training encompasses fundamental theories and methods of the screen process, followed by exercises and applications of the principles learned.

Survey of Life Drawing Techniques (GENI-1440) Using male and female nude models, this course provides an overview of some of the classic life drawing exercises and techniques used by artists and art students. We will employ exercises that include gesture, contour, outline, modular and constructed drawings. We will consider basic anatomy using a model skeleton in tandem with a model, and ultimately render light and shade on form with shading, hatching and washes. These exercises aim to enhance the personal drawing style of participants and how they perceive the human figure in space.

New! Commercial Screen Printing (CSP-FT) Get ready to draw out the artist inside! Gain the knowledge and skill necessary to obtain employment in the commercial screen printing sector. The course will provide you with an understanding of the scope of the screen printing industry.

You will participate in the fundamentals of the screen printing process, gain an understanding of the economics of Screen Printing, explore safety and environmental considerations, and practice quality control. Hands-on training will allow you to hone your craft. This course also encompasses essential skills specific to personal career planning, professional resume development and effective job search strategies. You will develop a personal career planning framework with aligned action plans, gain knowledge and experience working with various resume formats and professional resume portfolio packages, develop a professional resume appropriate for immediate job search, and develop an action-focused job search strategy. Fine Art Drawing: The Basics (GENI-1410) Explore basic drawing techniques with artist Clive Powsey and learn to accurately draw what you see with line and then render light and shade on form with shading and hatching. Informal perspective and measuring of angles and proportions will be considered. Planar drawing, modular drawing, and shading and separating the effect of local colour form light and shade on form will also be covered.

Subject matter will include still life, architecture, machinery, the face, and the figure (including drawing from life).

Award winning Clive Powsey paints watercolour landscapes and draws the figure. He studied drawing, painting and printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and graduated in 1980. He has exhibited regularly since 1981 in both solo and group shows. He received an award for Best Watercolour at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in 1999. In 2009 he received a D.L. Stevenson Award for Excellence in Watercolour. Clive has also worked in animated film and television from 1985 to 2010 with screen credits as an art director and background artist/stylist. He is a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Clive’s two main visual interests are drawing from life and painting in watercolour. Paint Like a Pro: Intermediate Acrylics (GENI-1536)

In this introductory painting course, artist Clive Powsey will use watercolour paint to help you understand the painting process. You will use a classic trinity of subjects for your painting: still-life arrangements, the nude figure, and landscape reference. Some basic drawing and perspective techniques will be studied initially, followed by watercolour painting techniques, often executed in monochrome.

You will learn how to distinguish local colour from the effects of light and shadow, and how to create form and drama in painting by designing with light and shadow.

Colour mixing is one of the great mysteries painters need to unravel when working with watercolours. This session will explore in depth how to create pure, clean colours—no mud any more—using a simple but effective step-by-step method that expert painter Marilyn Timms has gleaned over her many years of working in this exciting medium.

You will come away more confident and better able to get exactly the colour you need. This course is for all levels.

You have had some basic experience with acrylics and are trying to explore and build on what you have learned. You now know what you want to do but are having trouble getting there. This class will teach you how to use the same principles and rules as those which govern the creations of professional artists. You will understand how to use value and colour to create drama and interest in your paintings, the importance of brushwork and paint application as a creative tool, and how to achieve line, depth and texture in your work.

Content will include methods of painting, painting surfaces, working from transparent to translucent to opaque in order to fully utilize the versatility of acrylics. Channing Holland is an experienced and enthusiastic instructor who encourages learning in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. You will gain the information you need to take your paintings to the next level and have a very enjoyable learning experience in the process.

Vancouver Island painter Marilyn Timms has achieved great things with her stunning acrylic and watercolour paintings. Some of her achievements include an award from the American Watercolor Society (AWS) in New York City; full signature memberships in both the Federation of Canadian Artists (SFCA) and the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) in Ontario; and much more. Timms’ artworks appear in various issues of International Artist magazine plus several hardcover art books. Her works have been displayed in France, England, Australia, the USA and Canada.

Student, Watercolour Fun & Easy I

Acrylic Painting for Beginners (GENI-1535) Enjoy learning to paint with this colourful, versatile, water-soluble medium. Channing Holland explains the basics of acrylic paint, brushes and other needed supplies. She will introduce you to key elements such as colour mixing, value and painting techniques. The class will include demonstrations and practice in the elements of realism and landscape painting. In a relaxed environment, Channing will provide group and individual instruction to encourage and inspire the beginner.

Channing began formal art training during her early teens, graduating from Ontario College of Art in 1993 with a major in painting and drawing.

She stresses a sound background in the formal elements of art and design fundamentals and encourages students to develop their own subject matter and style, in combination with experimental techniques, mixed media and the wealth of new materials and tools available to the modern artist.

Private collectors hold Channing’s work across Canada and in the United States. She also has work in the collection of the Newfoundland government and in several corporate collections in Canada.

Chinese Brush Painting (GENI-1565) This workshop is designed for people who are interested in Chinese culture and painting. An art background is not necessary. The workshop will concentrate on flowers and landscapes, the two major categories of Chinese brush painting. Both traditional and contemporary Chinese artists and their works will be introduced and the evolution of brush painting will be discussed. Students will learn about ink, colour, texture, composition, the aesthetic principles and technical skills of Chinese brush painting through instructor’s demonstrations, in-class discussions and hands-on practice.

Students will be encouraged to explore their own styles.

Learning by Doing First Nations Art: Beginners (GENI-1582)

Write Here. Write Now. Creative Writing Two (GENI-2337)

Learn about Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations art by following step-by-step instructions on the basics of drawing, designing, and painting in the mid-coast (Kwakwaka’wakw) style of art. Paint, brushes and paper will be supplied for this beginner’s course. The workbook Learning by Doing Northwest Coast Native Indian Art is available for purchase from the instructor for $20. First Nations guest artists and speakers will be invited. Instructor Karin Clark has spent most of her time learning and working with BC First Nations in schools, colleges and universities.

Building on the conversations and practice of Creative Writing One, participants will be invited to work in multiple genres and encouraged to focus on a single genre of primary interest. A studio course, each week includes a seminar-style discussion of craft in model literary works as well as an instructor-led writing workshop where participants will have an opportunity to receive critical feedback on their writing. Topics for seminar discussion may include literary form, literary mode and genre, revision and editing, and aesthetic theory. This course includes weekly reading and optional writing exercises as well as written feedback from the instructor. Creative Writing Two concludes with feedback on a final portfolio/manuscript.

Mastering Portraiture (GENI-1585) Painting a fabulous portrait is the most rewarding feeling there is! Learn how, from getting the proportions correct through to adding expressive colours and just the right facial expression. Up in Smoke: The Coal Question (PAEC-6320)

This course will introduce the Windows 7 operating system, WordPad, and more advanced features of email.

Join Tom and Joan Hall as they present a slide show and commentary on their recent trip from Bangkok through Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos ending on the beaches of Thailand. Areas visited in Cambodia include the Angkor temples at Siem Reap and the Khmer Rouge Killing Field Memorials at Phnom Penh. Highlights of Vietnam include a home stay on the Mekong delta, the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the coastal beaches at Nha Trang and Hoi An and a kayak trip in Halong Bay. They also toured the old imperial capital at Hue, the current capital city of Hanoi and the area of indigenous hill tribe people near Sopa. Laos saw them learning to ride and care for elephants and included a cooking course in Luang Prahang. And finally, a visit to four of Thailand’s islands for some sun and sand.

Coal—as a burnable rock—has raised questions about its utility and safety for thousands of years, in many different human societies. When William Jevons asked his coal question in 1965—how would the exhaustion of coal resources in Britain affect the future of the empire—he set the stage for a revolution in economics, on issues such as risk, sustainability, and value. Now, we seem to be asking the same kind of questions about coal in British Columbia, but the answers may be quite different.

Join us for this series on World War II and learn about some of the far-reaching implications this conflict had on most of the world. The first three sessions of the series will be presented by Bill Lekich. The first session will start on Oct 3 and will study the causes of the conflict. Sessions on Oct 17 and 24 will be a study of the military and political history of the war. Gordon Scoffield, retired teacher of English and History will present on Oct 31. He will take a look at the new literary concepts prompted by the Second World War and the rapid social change during this period from about 1935 to 1950.These ideas will be examined and will be followed by discussion on why and how they became part of the “New Literary Scene” by touching on science fiction, fantasy, women’s rights, universal education and some important writers of the time. On Nov 7, Norman Silverstone will discuss how World War II almost devastated the world of haute couture, fashion and design. On Nov 14 Dr. Bob Perkins will discuss how the Allied and Axis sides both made heavy use of documentary-style productions and fictional screenplays to raise citizen morale on the home front and to enhance the patriotic feelings of their soldiers. We will survey a number of films that were made leading up to and during WWII as well as some productions that look back to that period of time.

Presenter: Dr. Peter Drummond. Peter spent 10 days in Quito, Ecuador before busing to the village of Santa Ana in the Amazon basin. He lived and worked with the Kichwa indigenous tribe for a month sourcing building materials from the forest and constructing a house for a widow and her 5 children. The outcome of the mission was highly rewarding but due to entrenched cultural norms most improvements realized in the volunteer mission will likely be temporary.

first aid training Oxygen Therapy for Divers (DVG-013) You will learn the Priority Action Approach including identifying scene conditions, which can endanger the rescuer or patient, transport decisions and critical interventions.

Topics also include airway management involving anatomy, airway assessment, causes of obstruction and basic airway management for conscious and unconscious patients.

Respiration, ventilation and oxygenation are covered with anatomy and physiology of respiration, ventilation techniques, complications and concerns with oxygen cylinders, regulators, accessories, operating procedures, patient application and signs of the beneficial effects of oxygen. This course is required by WorkSafeBC for all divers, dive supervisors or divers’ tenders. All students will be required to complete a NIC waiver. Certification is valid for 3 years with a valid OFA Level 1 or equivalent.

Canadian Red Cross Babysitter’s Course (FAC-012) This course is designed in compliance with the Canadian Red Cross to help children learn child care, injury prevention, and basic first aid skills. They will learn important child care skills; safety tips for children of all ages; how to cope with common problems, like tantrums and crying; what to do if anything makes the babysitter uncomfortable; some great games and other ideas for having fun with the children while babysitting; how to make the children’s environment safe and enjoyable; how to handle emergencies; and basic first aid.

Note: Students will need to bring a baby sized doll or stuffed animal to class for practice. Please bring a bag lunch and snacks.

Prerequisites: This course is for children 11 years and older.

An emergency first aid course would be beneficial, but is not required.

Occupational First Aid Level 3 Renewal (OFA-032) This course is for Occupational First Aid Level 3 First Aid attendants who prefer not to take the full OFA 030 course, but would like to attend a few classes as a refresher before challenging the Level 3 exam. Homework assignments must be completed before the first class. Basic S100 Fire Suppression & Safety (FOR-012) This S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety training is a forest industry shortened MOF course, which gives workers the basic knowledge of wildland fire dynamics and associated dangers. H2S Alive (GAS-010) This one-day course is intended for all workers in the petroleum industry who could be exposed to hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The course covers the physical properties and health hazards of H2S, how to protect oneself and basic rescue techniques. Each student is required to operate self-contained breathing apparatus, a detector tube device, and perform rescue breathing on a mannequin.

It is recommended that women wear pants or jeans.

This program is designed to provide post-basic training for individuals with previous Health Care Assistant (HCA) training and experience. Graduates will be prepared to work as Activity Assistants in a variety of settings including intermediate care facilities, assisted living settings, adult day care programs, clients’ homes, seniors’ centres or residential group homes.

Develop the practical skills and knowledge needed as a unit clerk, from medical terminology and transcription to hospital organization and administrative support. Workplace practicums give you first-hand experience and applied training in the field. Hospital Unit Clerks play a vital role in managing the information flow in hospital nursing units, providing administrative support and services. Employment opportunities exist throughout the health care industry, from hospitals to medical offices and care facilities. Texts are not included in the course fee, approximate cost $300. In her early years she attended the University of Massachusetts to study botany, then went on to Malaspina College (currently VIU) and was awarded a diploma in horticulture technology.

She then worked for Malaspina College for over twenty years as a technician and instructor and retired to form her own horticultural service and training company called “Gardens on the Go”.

Most recently Connie is teaching horticulture and customer service for North Island College in Port Alberni and also serves as the Adult Education Director for Nanaimo Community Gardens.

Connie has run market gardens, owned a tropical plant retail outlet, and for a while owned and operated a small perennial plant nursery called Yellowpoint Country Gardens. Topics include maritime hazards and emergencies, emergency response, firefighting, lifesaving equipment, abandonment, personal survival, signaling devices and rescue response. Marine Emergency Duties Basic Safety Course (MED-031) This course is designed for new entrants to the marine industry and for those personnel who have no formal training in marine emergency situations. Upon completion of this course the student will understand the hazards associated with the marine environment and their vessel, and the prevention of shipboard incidents, including fire.

They will be able to raise and react to alarms and other emergencies, to ensure that all seafarers are able to provide assistance in fire and abandonment emergency situations, and to assist in their own survival and rescue.

Master, Limited (NAU-014) The Master Limited certificate is required by Masters of vessels up to 60 gross tonnage. The certificate is valid on passenger and/or non-passenger carrying vessels and vessels engaged in towing of less than 60 gross tons. This certificate is restricted as to tonnage, area of operation and to named vessels. This course provides the theoretical skills to aid mariners in preparing to write for Master, Limited certification by Ship Safety. Construction Safety Training System (CTQ-010)

Carpentry Inter-Provincial Trade Qualification (CTQ-150)

The Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) is a webbased course developed by the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) . This online training system uses interactive multimedia including full-motion video and sound. CSTS training is a requirement on most job sites in Alberta and British Columbia. Participants will receive instruction on various health and safety topics and are then tested for 100% mastery. The instruction component is to be completed online. The testing, to determine if 100% mastery has been achieved, will take place at North Island College in a controlled testing environment. Students will attend a scheduled testing session, comprised of 15 quizzes and a final exam.

Certificates will be issued by the BCCSA. Students must present picture identification at the time of examination.

This course is designed for carpenters with at least six years of trade experience who wish to broaden and refresh their theoretical knowledge in order to challenge the provincial qualification exam. The course covers trade mathematics, tools and safety, blueprint reading, layout, materials, formwork and foundation, framing, roof framing, residential standards and finishing.

North Island College is a licensed driver training school in the province of British Columbia.

NIC has a variety of heavy equipment courses to suit your needs. Begin with the HEO Foundation (HEOF-FT) course in preparation for the Heavy Equipment Operator program or the Introduction to Machine Training (HEO-010). The HEO Foundation course is a four-week full-time course at a cost of $1,250 plus textbooks and HST. Students completing the HEO Foundation course may then choose to go on to the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEOP-FT) program. Air Brakes Operating Skills is an ICBC approved course.

It is mandatory to complete this training before you can add an Air Brake Endorsement to your license. The course consists of 16 hours of class time and a four-hour practical component. You will receive verification of training from your instructor upon completion. You must present this verification to ICBC and write the knowledge test for Air Brakes within 90 days of taking the course.

Persons with previous welding experience may also find this course beneficial for use in a professional or hobby endeavour. Wire Feed Welding is the most widely used form of welding, this 18-hour wire feed course will cover the basic set up and operation of constant current and constant voltage wire feed systems used in gas metal arc welding (MIG) and flux cored arc welding. Please note that a T2202A tax receipt is provided only for those courses with a six (6) digit course code.

First Aid text books are available from the First Aid office (VLG G1). Please arrange a pick-up time by calling 250-334-5092. You will need to show your course payment receipt to receive your books.

Waitlists If you find that your class is full, ask to have your name added to a waitlist. If a space becomes available, you will be contacted.

Fees Continuing Education, First Aid and ElderCollege tuition fees are payable in full to North Island College at the time of registration. We accept cash, cheques, Visa, MasterCard or Amex. No post-dated cheques. Tuition and other fees are subject to change without prior notification. Most of the courses and programs offered at NIC are exempt from HST, but the College has to charge HST on tuition for courses that do not receive post-secondary credits as part of a program of instruction. In our review of the tax implications of HST, we identified that Elder College and some Continuing Education courses do not meet the criteria for exemption from HST. As a result, effective July 1, 2010, HST must be added to the course tuition for noncredit courses and to the annual Elder College membership fee. HST is also applicable to books and materials.

When there is a sufficient number of students on a waitlist, we will endeavour to schedule another class. If registering on-line and you find the class is full, please call to add your name to a waitlist.

ElderCollege Fees

ElderCollege membership is required for course registration. The annual fee is $10 + HST in addition to individual course fees. Register online, in person, or mail (please include cheque). Carefully fill out all mandatory areas of the registration form.
