This booklet lists the North Island College Foundation scholarships and bursaries available for new NIC students. Continuing and graduating NIC students may apply for scholarships and bursaries listed in the blue booklet entitled 2011 Scholarships and Bursaries for Continuing and Graduating NIC students.

In 2010, 280 students received more than $180,000 in awards, bursaries and scholarships. Established in 1991, the North Island College Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting North Island College in its task to provide the skills and knowledge students need for successful employment and further education. The Foundation’s primary objective is to provide student scholarships and bursaries, as well as operating equipment and educational resources. Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, made up of community leaders from the College region, the Foundation actively seeks donations for the College. Through the continued support of individuals, local businesses, and organizations, which are committed to assisting students, these efforts are realized. Individuals and businesses are invited to share in the vision of North Island College by making a meaningful contribution to a bright future for our students. - what is the difference? Scholarships Scholarships are funds awarded to students for academic achievement. Please refer to the application instructions and application form in this booklet. Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are awarded to full-time students taking a minimum 24 credits.
Bursaries Bursaries are funds designed to assist students who demonstrate financial need. Students must meet specific eligibility criteria and must submit an application. Please refer to the application instructions and application form in this booklet. All entrance scholarships and bursaries are applied to tuition fees at time of registration and must be used in the year awarded.

$700
This scholarship is to recognize an outstanding Fine Arts student who is entering the first year of the Fine Arts program at North Island College. Applicants must be attending on a full-time basis and meet the admission requirements for the Fine Arts program. The award will be granted on the basis of academic achievement and an outstanding portfolio of work submitted with their application for the Fine Arts program.
Comox Valley Rife Volunteer and Resonant Light Technology Scholarship $460 This entrance scholarship is available to a full-time or part-time student enrolling in university studies at the Comox Valley campus. The recipient must have a career goal of complementary medicine or a similar field of health care.
Dr Neil Murphy Entrance Scholarship
$400
This award, named in honour of NIC President Emeritus Dr. M. Neil Murphy, is an entrance scholarship available to a student in any full-time credit program offered by North Island College. The recipient must have demonstrated proof of outstanding academic achievement.
Hon. Stanley B. Hagen Memorial Scholarship 2 awards of $2,580 Created in memory of long-serving Comox Valley MLA Stan Hagen in honour of his service to the community and his commitment and support of youth, these entrance scholarships are available to Comox Valley students enrolled in full-time studies in any program area. The recipients of these scholarships will have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and will have contributed to the well being of their community through active involvement in volunteer activities or community service.

Kiwanis Club of Port Alberni - Egon Matheson Scholarship $455 This entrance scholarship is named in memory of Egon Matheson, a longtime Kiwanis Club member and respected Port Alberni community citizen and business man. Egon came to Canada in 1957 and began his career as an automotive mechanic. In 1976, he and his brother-in-law purchased Port Machine Works, a move that took Egon back to his roots in Denmark, where his family has operated a blacksmith and machine shop since 1911. Egon Matheson believed very strongly in supporting students in trades programs such as automotive and welding. He would have been very proud of this scholarship. This scholarship is available to North Island College students enrolling in the automotive program in even numbered years and to students enrolling in the welding program in odd numbered years. The recipient must be a resident of Port Alberni and be attending the Port Alberni campus.
Lyle Wesley Scholarship
$275
This award, created in memory of Lyle Wesley, long time supporter and advocate for the BC community college system, is a college-wide entrance scholarship. It is available to a student enrolling in any one or two year full-time program or course of studies offered by North Island College. The recipient must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.
Michael Pallan Memorial Scholarship 4 awards of $1,150 The Michael Pallan Memorial Scholarship, established by his parents BR (Tom) Pallan and Kulwant (Koko) Pallan, has been created as a tribute to their loving and gentle youngest son Michael. Michael was a knowledgeable and experienced commercial fisherman who was always prepared to offer help to his fellow fishermen as the need arose. These entrance scholarships have been provided to support students from Campbell River enrolling at NIC’s Campbell River campus. Two scholarships are for students enrolling in a trade or vocational program and two scholarships are available for students entering the university academic studies program. The recipients must have clear career goals and be attending on a full-time basis.
North Island College Foundation Entrance Scholarships
4 awards of $2,500
These College-wide entrance scholarships, provided by the North Island College Foundation, are available to students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement in high school. Applicants must submit high school transcripts, a personal statement outlining educational and career goals, and two letters of reference from teachers supporting the application. Application deadline is April 30, 2011 - see page 12 for instructions

Peter Robinson Award of Excellence Fine Arts Entrance Scholarship
$1,145
The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding Fine Arts student from within the North Island College region. The applicant must be entering their first year of North Island College’s Fine Arts Diploma program.
Port Alberni 2004 Winter Games Legacy Scholarship $320 This entrance scholarship is available to a North Island College student enrolling in university studies at the Port Alberni campus. The recipient must be working towards the completion of a degree in sports medicine, kinesiology, physiotherapy, or similar field.
Ray Hughes Scholarship
$225
This award is to be given to a full-time or part-time student registered in an academic, vocational or technical program entering North Island College’s Campbell River campus. The recipient will have completed Grade 12 or equivalent in School District No. 72 (Campbell River) and must have been under the ‘Special Services’ umbrella at some time during their school career. The North Island College Adult Special Education Faculty will select the recipient in conjunction with the College-wide Awards Committee.
Scotiabank Scholarship
5 awards of $820
These College-wide entrance scholarships are available to students enrolled in full-time studies in a business program or related discipline. The applicant’s career goal must be directly related to business: whether that is in a corporation, small business, or starting their own entrepreneurial venture.
Stewart Edward Wallis Memorial Scholarship
$2,285
The scholarship shall be awarded annually to the top academic student graduating from Grade 12 from Kitasoo Community School, located in Klemtu, B.C. To be eligible, the student must be proceeding to postsecondary education at either North Island College or any other postsecondary institution in B.C. Upon demonstration of registration at either North Island College or the post-secondary institution of their choice, the recipient will be issued a cheque for the amount of the scholarship.

This award is available to a student enrolling in any full-time program at North Island College’s Port Alberni campus. Students applying for this award must have demonstrated financial need.
Alison Kern Memorial Award
$500
This entrance award is available to a North Island College student who is enrolling in the Nursing program. The recipient must be attending on a fulltime basis and have demonstrated financial need.
Andrea W Rowe Entrance Bursary
$485
This entrance award has been established to assist a female student entering her first year of any program of study at North Island College. The recipient will be enrolled in at least a 60% course load at the Comox Valley campus. Preference will be given to students who have attended any Adult Basic Education program at NIC.
Blackhall Family Bursary
2 awards of $675
These awards are available to two students enrolling in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree program at North Island College’s Comox Valley campus. These awards shall be presented in the form of cash awards, upon proof of registration and attendance. The recipients will be from the Comox Valley and have demonstrated financial need.
Bob Minkler Memorial Bursary
$685
This entrance award, named in memory of Bob Minkler, was created through the generosity of Marine Harvest (formerly Stolt Sea Farm Inc.), Ewos Canada Ltd., and Moore-Clark. The award is available to a full-time student enrolling at North Island College and living within the geographic area encompassing the Comox Valley through to the northern end of Vancouver Island (including the adjacent islands). Preference will be given to a student pursuing an educational goal within Salmon Farming, aquaculture, marine biology, or an Associate degree in the sciences.

Campbell River Dragon Boat Society*

This award is available to an entering or continuing Campbell River student attending North Island College’s Campbell River campus. The recipient will have a clearly defined educational and career goal that leads towards a career in the healthcare field. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in healthcare for women. The student may be attending on a full-time or part-time basis and must have demonstrated financial need.
Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary Bursary*

This award is available to a Campbell River resident who is entering or continuing their studies on a full or part-time basis in any of the following areas: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree, Medical prep, Kinesiology prep, Associate of Science Degree, Pharmacy prep, Health Care Assistant, Practical Nursing Certificate and Hospital Unit Clerk. Preference will be given to a dependent, or a relative of an employee or volunteer of the Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary.
Campbell River Recycling Society Bursary 2 awards of $2,150 This award is available to an entering university studies transfer student whose goal is to pursue education that will lead to a career in environmental sciences. The student must be a Campbell River resident attending North Island College on a full-time or part-time basis. The recipient must demonstrate financial need.
Canadian Daughters’ Provincial Bursary
$620
This Entrance Award is available to a mature student returning to North Island College’s Comox Valley campus to pursue an education, or upgrade training in any field of study. The recipient must be attending on a full-time basis, must be a Canadian citizen and have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a Canadian Daughter, or a relative of a Canadian Daughter.
Canadian Federation of University Women Comox Valley Bursary
$635
This entrance award, created by the Canadian Federation of University Women - Comox Valley, is available to a mature female student who resides in the Comox Valley and is studying at North Island College’s Comox Valley campus. The recipient may be attending on a full-time or part-time basis in a university studies program or upgrading in preparation for university studies.

- Application Instructions Using the application form provided in the centre-fold of this booklet: 1. Complete and sign both sides of the Application Form. In the Award(s) Selection list below, clearly mark each Entrance Award you wish to apply for. You may apply for multiple awards using one form. 2. Include a Personal Statement. Ensure that your full name, signature, and your NIC student number are included on your Personal Statement. Your Personal Statement describes your principal interests and activities. It includes community, volunteer and leadership activities, athletic involvement, offices held and awards received. Remember to outline your academic and career goals. Include any additional information that supports the criteria of the Entrance Award(s) you are applying for. 3. Review the Award(s) criteria carefully and ensure that you have explained why you are eligible to apply for the award(s). You will ONLY be considered for awards for which you are eligible. 4. If applicable, attach letters of reference that provide support for criteria eligibility (i.e. a maximum of 2 letters confirming scholastic achievement and community or volunteer activities). 5. Attach a copy of your high school transcripts. 6. This entrance award named in memory of Campbell River pioneers, Carl O., Margaret, Carl A., “Tubby” and Florence Thulin is available to a full-time or part-time Campbell River student enrolling in the Business Administration program or university transfer courses that lead to a business field. The recipient must also have a demonstrated financial need.
Coastal Community Credit Union Entrance Bursary
$455
In creating this entrance award, Coastal Community Credit Union chose criteria that most closely aligned with their commitment and involvement in the communities they serve. The recipient of this bursary must have a demonstrated financial need and meet the applicable program prerequisites. The student can be enrolling on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum of three courses) in either the Business Administration Diploma, or the First Nations Transition programs.
Colleen Deakin Memorial Bursary
$250
This bursary is available to a Port Alberni student entering the Human Service Worker Certificate or Human Service Worker Diploma programs at the Port Alberni campus. The recipient must demonstrate financial need.
Comox Valley Tourism Society Legacy Bursary* 2 awards of $830 These awards are available to North Island College students in the Tourism and Hospitality Management program and/or Culinary Arts program. Applicants should reside in the Comox Valley and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a student who can demonstrate commitment to sustainable tourism.
Compassionate Heart Award
$250
This award is a personal salute to the men and women who enter the nursing profession and dedicate their time and effort to alleviate human pain and suffering. This award is for a North Island College student entering the first year of nursing at the Comox Valley campus.
Creative Employment Access Society Bursary
$400
This award is available to a mature student who will be attending North Island College and lives in the Comox Valley. The recipient can be participating in any program at NIC, but preference will be given to a student who is pursuing training for a new career, or re-training in an existing field. The recipient must have been out of school for at least one year. * denotes awards that are available to either a new or continuing NIC student

Credit Union Foundation of BC Bursary* 2 awards of $500 This bursary will be awarded to students entering or continuing studies in academic, technical or vocational programs at North Island College. Students who might otherwise have difficulty completing their studies by reason of financial hardship are eligible for this bursary.
CUPE (North Island College) Local 3479 Bursary
$795
This entrance award, created by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3479 (North Island College), is available to a student entering North Island College who has demonstrated financial need. The recipient may enroll on either a full-time or part-time basis in any credit program at North Island College.
David N Hudson Bursary*
$315
This award, created in honour of a long-standing educator with North Island College, is available for a student enrolled in a NIC distance course(s). The student must have a demonstrated financial need and may be an entering student or a student continuing their studies at NIC. Preference will be given to a student attending North Island College’s Port Hardy campus, or an NIC Centre.
Denise Forest Memorial Bursary*
$620
This award is available to an entering or a continuing student attending the Comox Valley campus on either a full-time or part-time basis. As with all bursaries the recipient must have demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to recipients who actively support the principles of equality as they relate to the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups.
Dr Lou Dryden Student Success Bursary
$1,035
This College-wide award, named in honour of North Island College’s third president, is available to an entering student enrolled in any full-time program or course of studies offered by North Island College. The student must have successfully graduated from high school and must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is a son or daughter of a single parent. Involvement in volunteer activities or community service will also be considered.
Fred Bossom Memorial Bursary
$1,260
This College-wide entrance award, named in memory of Fred Bossom, is created through the generosity of Vancouver Island InsuranCentres Inc. The award is available to a full-time or part-time student enrolling in the Business Administration program or university transfer courses that lead to a business field. The recipient must also have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student actively involved in volunteer activities or community service. This entrance award, created by Graham & Frame Barristers, is available to a full-time student enrolling at North Island College’s Campbell River campus. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a student who is retraining as a result of injury.
Grieg Seafood Bursary*
$500
This entrance award is available to an entering or continuing student at North Island College. The recipient will be enrolling in a program of courses that relate to marine biology, biology, or similar area of study. The student receiving this award must be a resident of a community of Nootka Sound, Campbell River, adjacent islands or the North Island region.
Henry & Barbara Holden Bursary
$250
This award was created in honour of Henry and Barbara Holden and is available to a student entering any trades program at North Island College. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need.
Highland Grad ‘85 Reunion Bursary
$200
This entrance bursary is available to a student who has graduated from Highland Secondary School, School District No. 71, in the previous academic year. The recipient will have a clear and articulated education/ career path and be enrolling in full-time studies in college or university level courses at NIC. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need.
IODE Laura Gordon Chapter Bursary
2 awards of $500
This entrance award is available to a North Island College student who is enrolling in the Nursing program. The recipient must be attending on a full-time basis and have demonstrated financial need.
Jack Roche Memorial Bursary
$1,250
This College-wide award is available to an entering student enrolled in any credit program at North Island College. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need.

3 awards of $1,270
These entrance awards are available to male students who are entering North Island College and have a demonstrated financial need. The recipients must be enrolling on a full-time basis in any credit program at North Island College. These bursaries will not be awarded to students whose course emphasis is the study of business, commerce or economics. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated previous academic success.
Jane-Claire Inkster Memorial Women’s Bursary
6 awards of $1,270
These entrance awards are available to female students who are entering North Island College on a full-time basis in any credit program at North Island College. The recipients must have a demonstrated financial need. These bursaries will not be awarded to students whose course emphasis is the study of business, commerce or economics. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated previous academic success.
Jim Muldowney Bursary
$395
This entrance bursary is named in honour of Jim Muldowney, a long serving English instructor at North Island College. The bursary is available to a North Island College student enrolling in a trades or technical program during even numbered years and to an academic student enrolling in first or second year English literature in odd numbered years. This bursary is available to a full or part-time student residing in the Comox Valley, who is entering the Human Services Certificate (Education Assistant option) program at the North Island College’s Comox Valley campus. The recipient will have maintained a good academic standing. Preference will be given to a student who has a clear and articulated educational/career path or goal, and who has been actively involved in volunteer activities or community service (as it relates to elementary school-aged children or children with special needs). The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need. The funds will be released upon proof of registration.
Lazo Women’s Institute Entrance Bursary

These entrance awards, created by the Lazo Women’s Institute, are available to full-time or part-time students entering a career, technical, or vocational program of eight months or longer duration at North Island College’s Comox Valley or Campbell River campuses. The recipients must reside within School District No. 71 (Comox Valley), and be Canadian citizens. Students applying for this award must have a demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a member, or a relative of a member, of the BC Women’s Institute.
Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursary

The Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursary, established by his family and friends, as a tribute to their husband and son, brother, father and friend who, as a social worker in Campbell River, had a profound impact on children in the care of Youth Protection Services and their foster families. Lyndon was determined to see children in care excel and make positive changes in their lives. Lyndon was always proud to attend the graduation ceremonies of “his” kids and to see them receive their high school diplomas. He made a difference in their lives and gave them hope that they could make a better life for themselves through education. The Lyndon Cross Memorial Bursary is available to young adults from the Campbell River region, who have previously been or are currently in the foster care system. To be eligible, you must have graduated from high school and be enrolling at North Island College on a full-time basis in the program area of your choice. Applicants must submit an application, including a short essay describing who you are, your personal goals and aspirations, and how this bursary will assist you in achieving your goals.

Minerva Foundation Award for BC Women* 3 awards of $1,250 These College-wide awards are available to either entering or continuing female Aboriginal students, attending North Island College on a full-time basis (minimum 60% course load). The award will be granted on the basis of academic proficiency and demonstrated financial need in addition to one or more of the following criteria: single mothers advancing their education; mature women retraining in anticipation of returning to the workforce after a long absence; women pursuing education in non-traditional fields of study; and women who have overcome exceptional challenges and educational barriers.

Tsolum Heritage Society Bursary

The recipient of this award will be enrolled in university studies at the Comox Valley campus. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need as well as proof of satisfactory academic performance while in high school. Applicants must submit an application, including a short essay describing themselves, their personal goals and aspirations, and how this bursary will assist them in achieving their goals. They must also include two letters of reference supporting their application. Applicants for the bursary must live in the traditional Tsolum area, which is bounded by the Oyster River, the mountains, the ocean and Rennison Road. They must have clear career goals and be attending on a full-time basis.
Vancouver Island Trails Information Society Bursary* $500 Created through the generosity of the Vancouver Island Trails Information Society (VITIS), this College-wide bursary is available to a student who is entering or continuing at North Island College on a full or part-time basis. The recipient will be enrolled in courses related to environmental studies, conservation and outdoor tourism, including Coastal Adventure Tourism Certificate or Adventure Tourism Management Diploma programs. University Studies & Transfer students may be considered for this award but applicants must clearly demonstrate how their studies will lead to a career in the field of environmental sustainability, wildlife conservation/protection, physical recreation or an associated career. The recipient will have mantined a good academic standing and must have demonstrated financial need. The bursary will be applied to tuition and the successful applicant will also receive his/her choice of Hiking Trails books pulbished by VITIS, Volume 1, 2 or 3 (hikingtrailsbooks.com).
Women for Women Bursary* TBD These awards are available to female parents who reside in the Campbell River region and are enrolling or continuing their studies at the North Island College Campbell River campus. Full-Time Enrolment in at least a 60% course load for program of studies; typically three, three credit courses (nine credits per semester).
Graduating Student A graduating student is currently enrolled in a program and will graduate within the upcoming term
Industrial Training Program A program of study, that adheres to the Industrial Training Authority guidelines, that provides students with specific training for a select profession. Typically there are different levels a student must reach before receiving a final designation. For example, a Red Seal ticketed Electrician, must successfully complete 4 levels of study before achieving a Red Seal ticket in the electrical trade.
Mature Student 23 years or older in the calendar year at the time of registration New A student who has never attended NIC previously; A student who has not attended NIC for 5 or more years; A student who has taken upgrading courses only (ABE level) and who has been admitted to a post secondary program at NIC.
