Andrew Bouzane is young, focused and impressing the North Island’s top chefs with his attitude, passion and willingness to learn.

Bouzane eventually wants to discover Canada through its kitchens, learning from prestigious chefs and culinary cultures as he travels.

“Andrew is a gem; I knew it within five minutes of meeting him,” said Chef Alain Chabot, owner of Chez Vous Artisan Foods in Black Creek.

“He’s 20; if he keeps going the way he is, 10 years from now we’ll all know his name.”

Chabot hired Bouzane, an NIC Professional Cook 1 graduate, after meeting him at a North Vancouver Island Chefs Association (NVICA) event – Bouzane was volunteering at a chef’s shellfish showdown at 40 Knots Vineyard and Estate Winery.

NIC NURSING STUDENT GRAD BREAKS GROUND Sometimes a new career can take you places you never expected.

Such is the case for NIC graduate Dawn Tisdale, who was recently named among the top 150 nurses in Canada by the Canadian Nurses Association.

Tisdale has already made a big impact in the nursing profession.She is currently lead of the Student/New Grad program at the Association of Registered Nurses of British Columbia – despite only receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree last year.

A TRADES CAREER OPENS A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES For today’s graduates, trades careers are opening doors to diverse careers, new ways to enrich their education and improved lifestyles.

There is no better example than NIC’s Aircraft Structures Technician program, which sees its graduates go on to find employment in a challenging but rewarding field.

“Of our eight graduates this year, six have already found employment, and the other two are pursuing engineering degrees,” said David Nilson, NIC’s Aircraft Structures instructor.

In Campbell River, graduates from the program help fill local demand for companies such as Sealand Aviation.

“Once I was at NIC, I realized I really enjoyed learning and decided to go into engineering,” said Walker.

By contrast, Walker’s classmate Emanuele Sipione had long been interested in the trades.

The more he researched various programs, the more he knew NIC’s Aircraft Structures program was the right one for him.

Sipione’s advice for anyone seeking a trades education is to be patient.

Alder isn’t exaggerating. NIC Aircraft Structures graduates make up 70 per cent of the employees at the company.

Pursuing a career in the trades may once have seemed at odds with going for a university degree, but many students now find that the two can harmonize.

“If you are good with your hands, and have a good head on your shoulders, you’ll be successful,” he said.

Sipione had little time off after graduating. He and two classmates had to fly to Kelowna to start apprenticeships for KF Aerospace.

How do I get started?

Start at the foundation level to gain valuable skills. This will make it easier to find an employer to sponsor your apprenticeship. You will receive credit toward Level 1 (Level 1 & 2 for welding) and credit toward your apprenticeship hours requirement. If you already have a sponsor, you can skip the foundation level and register in Level 1.

How do I pay for it?

There are many financial supports available, from NIC scholarships and bursaries to federal and provincial government assistance.

PORT HARDY STUDENT OPENS DOORS TO EDUCATION, ONE COURSE AT A TIME Three years ago, Joye Walkus had no idea how much change a few upgrading courses could bring.

She soon realized the classes were part of UVic’s Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization program, in partnership between the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nation and UVic.

She had spent most of her life working with her father in the fishing industry, earning her first paycheque at the age of eight.
