NEW! Silver Jewellery - Beyond Basics (GENI-1206) Join jeweller Tracey Gibbons for another session of silver jewellery making. This four-week course will provide students with the opportunity to develop beyond the basic skills learned in the beginner jewellery-making course. You will explore more techniques, such as introduction to cuttlebone casting, how to ‘tube set’ and ‘claw set’ a faceted gemstone, texturing techniques, roller printing, and various finishing techniques that will give your creations a professional finish. Metal Jewellery Open Studio (GENI-1215) Join jewellery designer Kurt Tunkl in an open studio format in the metal jewellery studio at the Campbell River campus. You can use the equipment and tools in the NIC studio to work on your jewellery projects, while getting expert guidance and tips from Kurt. The Open Studio also allows you to work side by side with your peers in a supportive, creative environment. Our Campbell River studio is well equipped with a variety of electric and hand tools, work benches and reference materials. Prerequisite: Participants must have some experience in jewellery making and design; suitable for students who have taken one or more of the NIC Metal Jewellery courses/programs including the part-time Silver Jewellery Making course or the Metal Jewellery Design certificate or the summer Jewellery and Metal Art workshops. TRACEY GIBBONS In 1987 Tracey participated in a watch and jewellery repair apprenticeship with a local jeweller. That experience solidified her passion for gems and jewellery. In 1989 she attended the Vancouver Community College Jewellery Art and Design Diploma program. After graduating she enrolled at the Canadian Institute of Gemmology for two more years and earned her Gemmologist certificate. She later challenged the exams for advanced diamond grading and advanced gem identification through the Gemological Institute of America. Tracey has had her own home-based jewellery and appraisal business plus her own retail gallery. She has sold her pieces at many high end craft shows and at the Museum in Campbell River. She currently teaches in a variety of courses and programs at North Island College.
Introduction to Gemmology (GENI-1250) Are you interested in learning about gemstones, what sets value in a gem, and how you can identify them? Join certified gemmologist and jeweller Tracey Gibbons for a course on gem theory and practical gemmological testing methods. This course will cover gem characteristics and how to identify gems in today’s marketplace. You will also explore genuine vs. imitation gems, learn to use basic gem testing equipment, and look at diamonds and their imitators.

Drawing: The Basics (GENI-1410) Explore basic drawing techniques with artist Clive Powsey. Learn to accurately draw what you see with line techniques and then render light and shade on form with shading and hatching. Informal perspective and measuring of angles and proportions will be considered. Planar drawing, modular drawing, and shading and separating the effect of local colour from light and shade on form will also be covered. Survey of Life Drawing Techniques (GENI-1440) Using male and female nude models, this course provides an overview of some of the classic life drawing exercises and techniques used by artists and art students. We will employ exercises that include gesture, contour, outline, and modular and constructed drawings. We will consider basic anatomy using a model skeleton in tandem with a model and ultimately render light and shade on form with shading, hatching, and washes. NEW! Water Soluble Oils: Best of Both Worlds (GENI-1530) Whether you are a seasoned artist or a beginner, you will discover why water soluble oils are here to stay. Water soluble oils offers painters the luxurious blending of oil paint with a long enough drying time to allow for working into the paint, yet it dries quickly enough to enable painting over layers within 3 hours to a day. There are additional quirks and unique painting properties to be discovered in this course. Enjoy learning to paint with this colourful, versatile, water-soluble medium. Channing Holland explains the basics of acrylic paint, brushes, and other needed supplies. She will introduce you to key elements such as colour mixing, value, and painting techniques. The class will include demonstrations and practice in the elements of realism and landscape painting. In a relaxed environment, Channing will provide group and individual instruction to encourage and inspire the beginner. Note: Request a supply list. No class Nov 11.
You will learn some useful basic drawing concepts and then apply them to watercolour painting of a nude figure. Initially working monochromatically, glazes of local colour will be applied to create a convincing representation of light and shade playing on the form and local colour of the figure. As well as this considered approach to developing a watercolour figure painting, time will be set aside in each session to work wet-onwet, or alla prima, for spontaneous quick studies to explore the possibilities of the watercolour medium.

Chinese Brush Painting (GENI-1565) This workshop is designed for people who are interested in Chinese culture and painting. An art background is not necessary. The workshop will concentrate on flowers and landscapes, the two major categories of Chinese brush painting. Both traditional and contemporary Chinese artists and their works will be introduced, and the evolution of brush painting will be discussed. Students will learn about ink, colour, texture, composition, the aesthetic principles, and the technical skills of Chinese brush painting through instructor’s demonstration, inclass discussions, and hands-on practice. Screen Printing - Posters (SCR-011) This course is designed to provide an applied introduction to the production of a multi-colour poster. Participants will be introduced to film making, multicolour registration, printing fine detail, plus a variety of production skills designed to increase confidence as a screen printer. The course includes an applied project providing participants with the opportunity to complete a production run of a multi-colour poster.

Screen Printing - T-Shirt and Textiles (SCR-012) Building on skills from the Introduction to Screen Printing course, individuals interested in printing shirts or textiles can take a fabric-oriented course. Learn to design for t-shirts, mesh selection, stencil-making for durability and pre-registration, colour mixing and ink types, printing on a carousel, and step and repeat techniques. TRUE NORTH STRONG AND FREE: THE FORGING OF A NATION Fall 2014 (Sep - Dec), 8 weeks CV ElderCollege Saturday Lecture Series The focus will be on events that contributed to the unique culture and characteristics of being Canadian, and the ideas and institutions that set Canadians apart and formed our identity. Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (FAC-021) This is a comprehensive first aid course for those who require the skills and knowledge necessary to deal with life-threatening situations and to give assistance to people in physical distress. The course includes all of the content of the Emergency First Aid Course (FAC 020) plus injuries due to heat and cold, medical conditions, bone and joint injuries, and head and spinal injuries. Paramedic in Industry Practical Workshop (OFA-033) This practical workshop is intended to be an orientation to the expectations, roles, and responsibilities when practising as an Occupational First Aid (OFA) attendant. Successful completion will lead to a certificate that allows the candidate to practise within an OFA Level 3 attendant’s scope of practice and is only valid when the candidate has a current licence as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), or an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP). The OFA Level 3 Paramedic in Industry certificate is valid for three years. All eight Home Study Modules MUST be successfully completed prior to this practical workshop. Industry Certification Series (IDC-PT) The Industry Certification series is designed for individuals who do not presently hold these industry required credentials and are seeking certification to pursue employment. Training is designed for individuals with limited experience, who have a desire to work in industry. The training consists of the following components: • Transportation Endorsement

H2S Alive (GAS-010) This one-day course is intended for all workers in the petroleum industry who could be exposed to hydrogen sulphide (H2S). The course covers the physical properties and health hazards of H2S, how to protect oneself, and basic rescue techniques. Each student is required to operate self-contained breathing apparatus, a detector tube device, and to perform rescue breathing on a mannequin. It is recommended that participants wear pants or jeans. This is a short course, designed for employees of the food service industry. Topics include microbiology, types of foodborne illness, receiving and storing food safely, preparing food, serving food, personal hygiene, ware washing, and cleaning. MarketSafe is a food safety training program for farmers and producers who make, bake, or grow products to sell at local farmers’ markets, farm gates, or other types of temporary food markets. ZAC KREGOSKY Zac’s passion for gardening started off in his parents’ garden. Full of fruits, vegetables and ornamental trees and shrubs, the relaxing nature of the garden and gardening drew him in. While attending UVic, Zac took every available plant course. He learned a lot about plant anatomy and physiology and acquired his degree in biology. Next, Zac attended the Malaspina College Horticulture Diploma program where he learned about growing, landscape design and plant identification. Zachary started his career at the Art Knapp location in Vernon as a carry out boy and by the end of his 7 year tenure there he was the Nursery Manager. He then made the wise decision to move to the Comox Valley and the Art Knapp here. Zac has continued as Nursery Manager at this location for the last 6 ½ years and loves that horticulture is a continually evolving career with endless opportunities to learn and advance.

It is a land use and community building movement which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water into stable, productive communities. Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Training Course (NAU-005)
Master, Limited/ Fishing Master, IV Class (NAU-014)
This Transport Canada approved course combines classroom and onboard practical training to certify students as operators of small passenger vessels and workboats up to 5 gross tons, as well as fishing vessels up to 15 gross tons. Transport Canada required competency items taught in the classroom are further reinforced in the field onboard one of our training vessels. Students will obtain knowledge and practical experience with navigation, meteorology, pilotage, radar and electronics, seamanship, stability, vessel safety, and marine emergency duties. This course strives to be as hands-on as possible, helping ensure that graduates will be safe and professional on the water.
This course is for those working towards their Master, Limited or Fishing Master, IV Class certification. The Master, Limited certificate is required by Masters of vessels up to 60 gross tonnage and is valid on passengercarrying vessels, workboats, and tugs of less than 60 gross tons. The Fishing Master, IV Class certificate is for Masters of fishing vessels of not more than 100 gross tons engaged on near coastal or sheltered waters voyages or for Officer in charge of the watch of a fishing vessel of any tonnage engaged on near coastal and sheltered waters voyages. This comprehensive course prepares mariners for writing two core Transport Canada exams, Navigation Safety Level 1 and Chartwork & Pilotage Level 1.

Underground Mining Essentials Certificate The Underground Mining Essentials Certificate program is designed to provide essential industry knowledge and applied skills for entry-level employment in Canada’s mining industry. In just 14 weeks, students gain 360 hours of instruction, including 70 hours of hands-on work with mining tools and equipment. Coursework is comprehensive, covering topics that range from routine maintenance of mining machinery, the set-up and operation of drills and drilling machines, to installing and extending air and water pipes, scaling loose rock from tunnel walls, emergency procedures, the transport and handling of explosives and more. While the program is tailored to underground mining, the training easily transfers to other mining operations such as surface mining, open cast mining, strip mining, and rock quarry sites. DAN P. BERKSHIRE Dan started his 30 years in the exploration industry as a Mining Exploration Assistant. Since then, he has provided project management and logistic services for both public mining companies and independent geological engineers. He has a particular interest in the development and history of mineral resources on Vancouver Island.
PATRICK MCANDLESS Patrick is the Vice President of Exploration for Imperial Metals Corporation. With 43 years of as a Professional Geoscientist, he is engaged in base and precious metal exploration in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and Africa. In 2006, he received the C.J. Westerman Memorial Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC for outstanding service and dedication to advancing public recognition of geoscience. As a guest lecturer at colleges and universities across Canada, he mentors students on “A Career in Geoscience and Engineering: Getting Discovered.”
JIM MCMILLAN Jim likes to inspire NIC students with his love of “digging in the dirt.” With a BSc in Geology, Economics and Mine Engineering, he has worked as a Professional Mine Geologist in hard rock mining with Nyrstar’s Myra Falls Operations and in soft rock mining with Quinsam Coal on Vancouver Island. His love the underground has taken Jim to Mali, and to the Yukon with the Yukon Zinc Corporation.
JOSEPH J FIC Joe retired in 2009 after more than 30 years in the underground mining industry. Graduating from Haileybury School of Mines as a Mine Technologist, he has worked with Noranda Mines in Quebec, Macassa Gold in Northern Ontario, the Oil Sands of Alberta and Western Mines in Campbell River. Joe facilitates Mine Rescue Training, judging annual competitions all around BC.
ED TAJE With a 50 years of experience in the mining business, Ed has spent most of his last 20 years as a Senior Inspector at the BC Ministry of Mines, presently the Manager of Regional Operations, Coast Area. As an underground coal specialist, he has in-depth knowledge of the legislative requirements of the Mines Act. He promotes safety above all, and enjoys judging the annual Underground Mine Rescue Competition in BC.

The Commercial Vehicle Inspector’s course prepares students to perform inspections according to the specifications printed in the Commercial Vehicle Act and Regulations.
DO YOU LIKE FINE WOOD WORK?
You will learn to locate and apply specific regulations of the Motor Vehicle Act as they apply to inspections in order to comply with the regulations governing the administration of the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program, including general duties of the facilities Inspector. An open-book Authorized Inspector Exam must be completed at the end of the course. A minimum pass mark of 80% is required. Upon successful completion of the Authorized Inspector’s course, the College with forward the Certification forms and examinations to the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch. Once all eligibility requirements have been met, a Certificate and Authorized Inspector card will be mailed to your home address.

Whether you’re choosing ElderCollege, First Aid or Continuing Education courses and programs, you can register online, in person, or by cheque in the mail.
Fees

Continuing Education, First Aid and ElderCollege tuition fees are payable in full to North Island College at the time of registration. We accept cash, cheques, Visa, MasterCard or Amex. No post-dated cheques. Tuition and other fees are subject to change without prior notification. Most of the courses and programs offered at NIC are exempt from GST, but the College has to charge GST on tuition for courses that do not receive post-secondary credits as part of a program of instruction. GST must be added to the course tuition for non-credit courses and to the annual ElderCollege membership fee. GST is also applicable to books and materials.

ElderCollege membership is required for course registration. The annual fee is $10 + GST in addition to individual course fees. Register online, in person, or mail (please include cheque). Carefully fill out all mandatory areas of the registration form.

Mail payment to the Student Services office at the campus nearest you, along with your $10 + GST membership fee and payment for course fees.
Complete the Continuing Education or ElderCollege registration form—whichever applies to you. Include your payment (by cheque only) and send your form by mail to your local campus listed on the bottom of this page.
SIGN UP FOR FUTURE COURSES. To put your name on an interest list for future courses, phone Continuing Education at 250-923-9750 or email agnes.sharkie@nic.bc.ca. When the course has been scheduled, those on the list will be contacted with scheduling information and can register at that time.
Tax Receipts Please note that a T2202A tax receipt is provided only for those courses with a six (6) digit course code.
Waitlists If you find that your class is full, ask to have your name added to a waitlist. If a space becomes available, you will be contacted. When there is a sufficient number of students on a waitlist, we will endeavour to schedule another class. If registering on-line and you find the class is full, please call to add your name to a waitlist.
Refund Policy Students will receive a full refund for Continuing Education, First Aid and ElderCollege courses if they withdraw at least seven days prior to course start date. Some exceptions may apply to specific programs. Please contact Continuing Education for more details.

Confirming Course Registration, Class Time and Location If registering in person, you will receive a confirmation receipt. If registering online, you will see a confirmation screen.
Course Cancellations The College reserves the right to cancel courses. Every effort is made to notify students, so please ensure that your contact information is current. Refunds for cancelled courses will be processed automatically.
Inclement Weather The college reserves the right to close the campus due to inclement weather. Please listen to your local radio station or visit www.nic.bc.ca for campus closure information. Cancelled classes will be re-scheduled.

CONNECTING COMMUNITIES THROUGH RESEARCH, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION RESEARCH: Sustainable Aquaculture North Island College embarked on a five year research project to further investigate Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture techniques. This practice of including many species on a single aquaculture site has been demonstrated to show increased environmental remediation, economic stability and social responsibility. Industry partners supporting NIC in this project include Marine Harvest Canada, Creative Salmon, and Grieg Seafood BC, among others.
