Metal Jewellery Design
CHERYL JACOBS
The opportunity to work with stones and fossils inspired Cheryl to become a jeweller almost thirty years ago. She began her jewellery apprenticeship in San Francisco, California in the early 1980’s, attending classes in casting, granulation and stone setting at the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts, and supplementing her studies at San Francisco State University. In 1987 she started her own business, creating a line of jewellery and teaching from her studio. Teaching is a focal point in her career, and she has been a part of NIC’s Metal Jewellery Design program since its inception in 2012. Cheryl has taught at community centres across Vancouver Island. Her work is featured in galleries across Canada and in the United States, including Hawaii, California, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. She finds the creative process invigorating, saying that the most exciting part of making jewellery is that there is no right or wrong way to create a piece of wearable art, as long as the aesthetics are in place and the design process is working.

The opportunities to explore technical and creative skills were boundless thanks to our fantastic teachers: their expertise was shared with great skill, enthusiasm and patience. The in-person experience was so much more valuable than learning on the internet. Our cohort spanned five decades in age and the dynamic was friendly, kind, and respectful. We shared ideas and advice; helped and encouraged each other. MARINE TRAINING
Jock grew up in Campbell River and started his marine career commercial fishing, followed by 5 years as seaman and 3rd officer on the Fisheries Research vessel M.V. Tanu. He later joined the Ministry of Highways ferries, and then the BC Ferry Corporation (BCFC). Jock has been Master on all BCF routes from Haida Gwaii to Tsawwassen, and for six years was Marine Superintendent for BCFC. Jock feels fortunate to have had additional opportunities along the way that include hull testing operations in Vienna, Training Master for the Staten Island Ferries in New York, and sea trials Master for Ocean Pacific and Allied Shipyards. After retiring from the ferries, Jock took his lifetime of local knowledge to Way West Coastal Ventures in Campbell River. He’s also spent several seasons in the Arctic as Master on Inland Ferries, often working in full ice. Today he works with Quinte Marine in Vancouver as a consultant. Jock has had a full and happy career and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences. His qualifications, experience and sense of humour make for a dynamic combination in the classroom. He hopes the students he works with are beginning careers that will be as rewarding and fulfilling as his has been.

PLANNING AHEAD?
Zac’s passion for gardening started off in his parents’ garden. Full of fruits, vegetables and ornamental trees and shrubs, the relaxing nature of the garden and gardening drew him in. While attending UVic, Zac took every available plant course. He learned a lot about plant anatomy and physiology and aquired his degree in biology. Next, Zac attended a Malaspina College Horticulture Diploma program. Here he learned about growing, landscape design and plant identification. Zachary started his career at the Art Knapp location in Vernon as a carry-out boy. At the end of his 7 year tenure there he was the Nursery Manager. He then made the wise decision to move to the Comox Valley and the Art Knapp here.
