Drawing: The Basics (GENI-1410)

NEW! Drawing into Painting (GENI-1435)

Explore basic drawing techniques with artist Clive Powsey. Learn to accurately draw what you see with line and then render light and shade on form with shading and hatching. Informal perspective and measuring of angles and proportions will be considered. Planar drawing, modular drawing, and shading and separating the effect of local colour form light and shade on form will also be covered. Subject matter will include still life, architecture, machinery, the face and the figure (including drawing from life). Instructor: Clive Powsey.

Learn the essentials of drawing and painting, and explore the transition from black-and-white to colour using drawing materials and water-based paints. Examine line, form, value, shape, tone, colour and pictorial drawings, then move into painting using still life, the model and your creativity. As well as this considered approach to developing a watercolour painting, time will be set aside in each session to work wet-on-wet (alla prima) for spontaneous quick studies that explore the possibilities of the watercolour medium.

Watercolours: Fun & Easy (GENI-1510) Survey of Life Drawing Techniques (GENI-1440) Using male and female nude models, this course provides an overview of some of the classic life drawing exercises and techniques used by artists and art students. We will employ exercises that include gesture, contour, outline, modular and constructed drawings. We will consider basic anatomy using a model skeleton in tandem with a model, and ultimately render light and shade on form with shading, hatching and washes. Acrylics: Painting Realistic Textures (GENI-1534) Obtaining precise, realistic results in acrylic painting comes down to one’s ability to accurately render surfaces and textures. This class provides students with the essential skills required to render realistic painting effects in acrylics, mastering a variety of surfaces and textures, including sand, water, metals, glass, fur, foliage, wood, bark, fabrics, stone, grass and many more. Open to all levels. The purpose of this class is to learn techniques, not to produce completed paintings. This is not a mixed media class so only commonly used painting supplies are required and a supply list will be provided. Chinese Brush Painting (GENI-1565) Explore Chinese culture and learn beginner techniques to paint flowers and landscapes, the two major categories of Chinese brush painting. Both traditional and contemporary Chinese artists and their works

METAL JEWELLERY We offer a variety of jewellery courses in our Campbell River studio and add new ones throughout the year. Email Julia at julia.peters@nic.bc.ca to get on the Metal Jewellery Design email list and receive updates on workshops and related upcoming events.

Jan has worked as an independent jewellery maker since 1992, participating in a variety of art shows and craft fairs, including the Island’s Filberg Festival. Her interest in jewellery design was sparked years ago when she found shards of Japanese and Chinese pottery near her Cumberland home. These became the basis for her first jewellery creations. Inspired by this experience, Jan enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and Design for a semester. She continued her studies at Vancouver Community College where, in 1992, she completed an honours diploma in jewellery art & design. In 2004, she went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts. Before assisting with the development of NIC’s Metal Jewellery Design certificate, she taught beginners silversmithing through NIC’s Continuing Education department.

Metal Jewellery Design Certificate (MJD-FT) Gain the technical skills and industry knowledge needed to conceptualize and create jewellery for artistic expression or as a source of income. This program is well-suited to anyone who is interested in beginning or advancing their skills in jewellery making and design. No previous experience is required; however, some studio work or hobby experience is advantageous. During the program, students explore a wide range of topics and apply professional techniques in jewellery making through extensive hands-on studio practice as well as demonstrations and lectures from skilled jewellery makers. The program focuses on metal techniques, including student work in base and precious metals. Courses emphasize individual creativity, giving you the opportunity to apply your learning to create your own designs. Graduates will also have the business skills to present and promote these designs. Note: Students’ supplies are not included in the course fee (approx cost $1,000). Silver Jewellery- Beyond Basics (GENI-1206)

This two-day course is an introduction to the creative and fun world of jewellery making for beginners. It has been specifically designed for students with no previous metal working experience. You will learn all the techniques needed to create your own beautifully finished band ring and one-of-a-kind pendant. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice you will learn various basic techniques such as piercing, filing, soldering, annealing, sanding, polishing, texturing and fabrication with a focus on safe studio and equipment practices. We will demonstrate all the steps needed to complete each piece as well as provide handouts with all the details for your reference. By the end of this course you will be able to take home two new pieces of jewellery that you will be proud to wear or share.

This four-week course will provide students with the opportunity to develop beyond the basic skills learned in the beginners course (GEN-1205). You will explore more techniques, such as introduction to cuttlebone casting, how to ‘tube-set’ and ‘claw-set’ a faceted gemstone, texturing techniques, roller printing, and various finishing techniques that will give your creations a professional finish. This course is labour intensive and has a moderate degree of difficulty.

Solder Blast (GENI-1222) Spend a day learning the basics of silver soldering by creating a tri-metal pendant. You will be incorporating a number of soldering techniques and methods which will provide you with a basic skill level that you can use in your own home studio. You will use silver solder to join and attach a variety of shapes in brass, copper and silver into a complete finished unit. The Art of Filigree (GENI-1218) Learn an ancient form of open-backed wire work still used in many cultures world-wide. Many contemporary crafts persons have created non-traditional pieces of filigree taking advantage of its continued popularity. Students will saw, solder, file, manipulate wire and sheet metal, drop a small stone if desired, polish, create ear wires and generally advance their skill level. This class is all about exploring this ancient technique but applying a contemporary twist. The results will be amazing. Some experience in jewellery making is recommended. Textile Collage: Materials, Meaning & Making

ANNE J STEVES Anne Steves is a visual artist working primarily through drawing, collage and thread based media. Her work examines the narratives of place using the aesthetics of common craft materials. Anne engages with new places and communities through artist residencies, exhibition opportunities and travel and allows these experiences to influence her making process. Born in Wales, Anne made BC her home in 2000 and has since received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2007) and her MFA from the University of Victoria (2010). Anne has been teaching courses at the intersection between art and craft at the Vancouver Island School of Art in Victoria as well as workshops at a variety of venues. Her work was chosen to be included in last year’s Painting on the Edge and Salt Spring National Art Prize exhibitions and has been exhibited across Canada and the UK.

Sara entered the clothing business after she graduated from Kwantlen College’s Fashion Design degree with an interest in taking care of small businesses as well as the environment. Her work experience has taken her from Vancouver, where she worked with locals Alison Wonderland, Lunapads International and lululemon’s little sister OQOQO, all the way around the world to Ghana where she worked with hand-dyed clothing, and Uganda where she taught rural women sewing and dyeing. Back in North America, Sara is involved with Fibershed and revitalizing local textile agriculture. Sara believes that in a world where anything we could ever want or need is at our fingertips, taking the time to make something not only beautiful but useful is a meditation on a fundamental part of what it means to be human. Sara has taught Practical Arts at Saltwater Waldorf School and Cumberland Community Schools Society. Her previous work in the sustainable apparel design sector overflows into her teaching; by helping students to gain an appreciation for where materials come from and to create something that will last.

Our coast is a land of extremes, from mild to wild, from raw and rugged to long inhabited and cultured. This lecture series is an exploration of various aspects of coastal life. Topics include natural phenomena, human migrations, ocean flora and fauna, environmental threats, and initiatives to protect and restore our coastal homeland. The lectures will present a portrait of interactions between water and land habitats, relationships among different peoples, and the impact by all on the environment. The Master Limited certificate is required by masters of vessels up to 60 gross tonnage and is valid on passenger carrying vessels, work boats, and tugs of less than 60 gross tons. The Fishing Master, IV Class certificate is for masters of fishing vessels of not more than 100 gross tons engaged on near-coastal or sheltered waters voyages; or officer in charge of the watch of a fishing vessel of any tonnage engaged on near-coastal and sheltered waters voyages. Ship Construction & Stability Level 3 (SCS 3) (NAU-023) This course prepares students for Transport Canada examination on Ship Construction and Stability Level 3, as required towards Master 150 and 500 Gross Tonnage certification. Students will learn about the design and construction of various types of vessels and be able to perform stability calculations and interpret data from hydrostatic tables and curves. The courses covers topics such as stability and construction terminology; transverse stability and trim calculations, stability data for vessels and tugs; survivability of the vessel in case of flooding and damage control; and maintaining watertight integrity.

Simulated Electronic Navigation Limited (NAU-030) This course is designed to provide the student with a practical knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch while using Radar, Loran-C, GPS, Echo Sounder, a compass, and an Electronic Charting System. Each course participant must attend a minimum of 90% of lecture classes and 100% attendance is required during simulation exercises and evaluation. Marine Basic First Aid & CPR C (FAC-082) The Marine Basic First Aid course meets defined Federal Transport Canada Marine Safety Training Standards for Marine First Aid. This course provides individuals with a basic training level of first aid and CPR required by the Marine Industry. Certification is by the Canadian Red Cross and Marine Transport Canada with a certification period of five years.

FIRST AID & SAFETY TRAINING

Gain the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness in a pre-hospital setting. Course is for those providing emergency response or pursuing a career in the field; these may include firefighters, law enforcement officers, workplace responders and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. The certification is valid for three years and includes CPR level HCP and AED. Prerequisite: Participant must be certified in Standard First Aid with CPR level C or higher. Landscape Horticulture Program: Info Session (GENI-5130) This information session will give prospective students the opportunity to learn about the landscape horticulture programs and courses at North Island College and opportunities in the field of landscape horticulture. This apprenticeship program is designed for people employed at landscape companies, municipal parks, golf courses, garden centres, nurseries, and other related horticulture businesses. Horticulture Apprenticeship links learning and employment by providing apprentices the opportunity to further their education, while maintaining employment in the horticulture industry. Registrants must have a sponsor in the field, an ITA ID#, and have successfully completed the Level 1 training. The ITA curriculum has been developed and approved by the horticulture industry and NIC has enriched the curriculum with additional topics on landscape maintenance and design, putting you a step ahead with extra skills that are attractive to employers. This program prepares you to take the ITA Level 2 exam towards the Landscape Horticulture Red Seal Certification. This apprenticeship program is designed for those currently working and those planning to work in landscaping. Potential employers include landscape companies, municipal parks, golf courses, garden centres, nurseries, and horticulture-related businesses. Study part time during the evening and weekends, allowing you to further your education while maintaining employment. Please note that no work experience in landscaping is required to apply to this program. An apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and classroom learning that leads to a trade credential - or “ticket”. An apprenticeship is established when an employer agrees to sponsor an employee, and both employer and employee register with the Industry Training Authority (ITA). If you are already working in the field, you and your employer can register with the ITA to get your ID# and start tracking your work hours. Those who do not already have an employer or experience in the industry may use HortEducation BC as their sponsor for this first level of training. Landscape Horticulture Fundamentals Certificate, Full-Time (LHC-FT) Landscape horticulture is the art of selecting, handling and utilizing ornamental trees, shrubs, and turf grass for the design, development and maintenance of public and private landscape spaces. The Landscape Horticulture Fundamentals certificate program is an intensive evening/weekend program that is a good starting point for anyone planning to continue their studies in more specialized horticultural disciplines or for the recreational gardener who wants to increase their horticultural knowledge. Graduates will also have the skills to pursue entry-level work in horticulture upon completion. The program provides a solid foundation in horticulture while focusing on landscape maintenance skills and introducing landscape design considerations. Courses cover a wide range of topics, including horticulture practices, equipment, and organizational skills; plant identification, health, and science; soil; as well as landscape maintenance skills and design fundamentals. CORINNE MATHESON

Corinne is a Certified Landscape Designer and Horticultural Technician (Qualified Plantsman) designing Commercial and Residential properties on Vancouver Island. Corinne completed her Horticulture Technician (Qualified Plantsman) certificate through Guelph University in 1993. Corinne is a Member of the BCLNA, CLNA, and Campbell River’s BPWN (Business & Professional Women’s Network and the Chamber of Commerce. She first started a Landscape Installation Company in 1993, which then grew to include Mystic Woods Nursery in 1997. In 2006 Corinne closed Mystic Woods Nursery so she could focus full time on her design work, and changed the company name to Mystic Woods Landscape Design. Over the years Corinne has taught landscape courses to students at several schools, and has been a guest speaker at landscape clubs and schools from Victoria, to Campbell River. In her spare time, Corinne also trains horses using the natural horsemanship method, also known as horse whispering. She owns an equestrian stable and indoor riding arena. ZACHARY KREGOSKY Zac’s passion for gardening started off in his parents’ garden. Full of fruits, vegetables and ornamental trees and shrubs, the relaxing nature of the garden and gardening drew him in. While attending UVic, Zac took every available plant course. He learned a lot about plant anatomy and physiology and acquired his degree in biology. Next, Zac attended a Malaspina College Horticulture Diploma program. Here he learned about growing, landscape design and plant identification. Zachary started his career at the Art Knapp location in Vernon as a carry out boy. At the end of his 7 year tenure there he was the Nursery Manager. He then made the wise decision to move to the Comox Valley and the Art Knapp here. Zac has continued as Nursery Manager at this location for the last 5 & ½ years and loves that horticulture is a continually evolving career with endless opportunities to learn and advance.

SHANE TILLAPAUGH Shane is a gardener and a naturalist who loves birds, bees, plants and trees. After graduating with a degree in biology from UVIC in 2004, he then completed a certificate program in Ecological Landscape Design and later earned the designation of Certified Organic Land Care Professional. Other designations he holds include International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist, a Certified Wildlife/Danger Tree Assessor and a Landscape IPM Certified Pesticide Applicator. Shane ran his own gardening/landscaping business, Eco Island Gardenscapes, for five years. In this time he had the opportunity to work with world renowned Landscape Architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander on a large green roof project featured in the BC magazine, Sitelines. His experience also includes edible landscaping, nature inspired water features, and speaking for community groups on the fundamentals of organic gardening. Shane is a member of the Society for Organic Urban Land Care, International Society of Arboriculture, American Rhododendron Society and the North American Rock Garden Society. He is currently a horticulturalist in the Parks Department of the City of Courtenay.

THE FINE PRINT Fees Continuing Education, First Aid and ElderCollege tuition fees are payable in full to North Island College at the time of registration. We accept cash, cheques, Visa, MasterCard or Amex. No post-dated cheques. Tuition and other fees are subject to change without prior notification. Most of the courses and programs offered at NIC are exempt from GST, but the College has to charge GST on tuition for courses that do not receive post-secondary credits as part of a program of instruction. GST must be added to the course tuition for non-credit courses and to the annual ElderCollege membership fee. GST is also applicable to books and materials.

ElderCollege Fees ElderCollege membership is required for course registration. The annual fee is $10 + GST in addition to individual course fees. Register online, in person, or mail (please include cheque). Carefully fill out all mandatory areas of the registration form. Mail payment to the Student Services office at the campus nearest you, along with your $10 + GST membership fee and payment for course fees.

Tax Receipts Please note that a T2202A tax receipt is provided only for those courses with a six (6) digit course code.

Waitlists If you find that your class is full, ask to have your name added to a waitlist. If a space becomes available, you will be contacted. When there is a sufficient number of students on a waitlist, we will endeavour to schedule another class. If registering on-line and you find the class is full, please call to add your name to a waitlist.

Refund Policy Students will receive a full refund for Continuing Education, First Aid and ElderCollege courses if they withdraw at least seven days prior to course start date. Some exceptions may apply to specific programs. Please contact Continuing Education for more details.
