NIC RESEARCH AND INNOVATION Through the Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation (CARTI), NIC students gain valuable experience contributing to applied research projects, giving them opportunities to enhance their classroom learning and to collaborate with local community organizations and businesses.

CARTI places students in research in the following areas: • Sustainable aquaculture • Health, community and industry research • Robotics, electronics and internet • Social innovation

New Techniques to Improve Aquaculture North Island College is embarking on a five year research project to further investigate Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture techniques. This practice of including many species on a single aquaculture site has been demonstrated to show increased environmental remediation, economic stability and social acceptability. As NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Sustainable Aquaculture, Dr. Stephen Cross contributes his international expertise and long history of aquaculture research to this project.

Restore Estuary Environments

Control live labs. Anywhere. Anytime.

NIC student Jamie Lund’s contribution to research into the distribution of eelgrass beds provided an opportunity to bring classroom science to real life - mapping eelgrass, improving the environment and creating positive change in her own community.

NIC’s Remote Web-based Science Labs provide internet access to hands-on lab experiments in real time. Students manipulate lasers, high-powered microscopes, electrons, spectrometers, and more in 25 lab experiments. Recently this technology was recognized at the international Reimagine Education Awards with a second place award, second only to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
