The NorthVancouver waterfront could soon be home to a massive new grain export terminal.

Western Stevedoring’s Lynnterm West Gate facility at the foot of Brooksbank Avenue has been a break bulk facility since the 1970s, but the company has partnered with Manitoba-based G3 Global Holdings to build a

new grain terminal.

Though the designs haven’t been finalized, the terminal will require silos big enough to hold 180,000 tonnes of grain and export six million tonnes per year.

“There’s a lot of activity that needs to be done on site for a facility of this size.This is one of the largest developments that will have happened in Port Metro Vancouver for quite some time.This is the first large grain terminal that will have been built since the early 1960s,” said Karl Gerrand, G3’s CEO. G3 is still trying to determine whether it’s feasible to construct the facility based on whether there are enough grain elevators in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, and rail capacity to See Terminal page 5

A new study that finds a series of municipal amalgamations in Ontario wound up costing taxpayers more than they saved is breathing life into the 108-year-old debate between the two North Vancouvers.

The Fraser Institute studied the financials of three rural municipalities that were forced to consolidate by the Progressive Conservative government of the 1990s, and compared them to

unamalgamated ones.

“We find very little evidence of tax savings or cost reductions,” the report stated.

“In most of our cases, the tax burden on individual households increased.”

The report says it may not have been the act of restructuring that doomed the municipalities to higher spending, but rather the speed they were required to do it in — in some cases, less than a year.

ACE-IT: Teens building for the future Popular trades training credit course equips students with more than carpentry skills ROSALIND DUANE rduane@nsnews.com

The low buzz of a saw in motion cuts loudly through a smattering of portables as pockets of teens stream between the buildings.

Not paying any attention to the noise, they are heading to the cafeteria for lunch.

In the opposite direction, the sound of machinery at work leads to a tall wood structure with a white tent top.

Beside it, bright beige piles of sawdust dot the edge of an outside workspace where 17-year-old Caelan Drayer is crouched over a large log, brushing its exposed ends with white latex paint.

Greg Cormier stands close by. He is wearing Kevlar coveralls and a hard hat, basic safety gear for this kind of work. An old Alaskan chainsaw, the source of the loud buzzing, sits just to the side, now silent.

Littered around him are various-sized logs in different states of milling, and Cormier explains that when the moisture comes out of a log it comes out the ends faster than the centre. Drying at different rates causes the log to crack.

Painting the ends helps prevent the moisture from escaping rapidly and keeps the drying even.

Cormier is a certified Red Seal carpenter (a national trades designation), and worked as a carpenter before earning a master’s degree to become a teacher.

He now heads the ACEIT carpentry program at West Vancouver secondary, and says his career has come full circle as he now gets to combine his two passions.

This program is one of many ACE-IT (accelerated credit enrolment in industrial training) programs across the province that came into being about a decade ago.

The program at West Vancouver secondary started just two years ago, and next fall’s enrolment is already

Students come from schools across the North Shore, are typically in Grade 11 or 12, and those who complete the program and pass their final exam receive a first-year apprenticeship certification and credit towards their high school graduation.

“It works for so many kids,” explains Cormier, noting the combination of academic credits and apprenticeship training opens options to move on to post-secondary education and be qualified to work at the same time.

Most schools on the North Shore operate on a linear timetable rotating between a Day 1 and a Day 2 designation. ACE-IT students spend one whole day of the two-day rotation in the carpentry program, and the other day in regular academic courses at their home school.

The curriculum is broad and Drayer, who is graduating this year,

“I enjoyed it and I learned a lot,” he says.

“Normally at school you’re just sitting down and writing.

Here it’s like, ‘I’m going to build myself a shed,’ and we build it.”

This year, the students have actually built three sheds for “clients,” including a garden shed for Drayer’s parents, and assembled them at the clients’ homes.The class didn’t make a profit on the sales; they just recouped the cost of materials.

Terminal could bring 100 jobs From page 1 feed the system. It’s likely another four to six months before a decision can be made, Gerrand said, but the company decided to go public with the plans this week because the sheer size involved meant rumours were starting to spread.

“We’ve got a cast of thousands that are starting to get involved in this project and we also have a local community that we wanted to reach out to and consult with to make sure we’re meeting the needs of the local interest groups in the Vancouver area,” he said.

“This is a project of such size and complexity and significance, it’s garnered quite a bit of attention.”

Once completed, G3 will be in direct competition with North Vancouver’s Richardson International and Cargill Canada, as well as other grain terminals on the West Coast. But, Gerrand said, this project will have a more efficient design, with a train loop right down to the water’s edge that will allow for up to 130 cars to roll in compared to the 40 or 50 the other facilities can handle.

“It’s going to allow us to bring in large trains, unload them in a very quick manner — much faster than the existing terminals can unload them and get the train back to the Prairies to fill again, turn around and

By comparison, Cargill Canada’s silos on the other side of Neptune Terminals hold 240,000 tonnes and Richardson International’s hold about 180,000.

It’s too soon to say how much the project will cost to construct but Gerrand estimated it would result in another 60 to 100 new jobs to operate.

Increased demand for grain in Asia is what’s spurring the investment, Gerrand said.

“We’ve had bottlenecks in the system, especially last year in the grain industry where we had upwards of 60 to 70 vessels at any time sitting out in the Port of

Vancouver waiting to be loaded and they just can’t get the grain fast enough,” he said.

Should G3 pursue the project and Port Metro Vancouver give it the necessary permits, Gerrand said construction should start by next summer and have the terminal online for 2019’s fall harvest.

The existing break bulk operations at Lynnterm West Gate can be shifted over to the East Gate facility on the other side of Lynn Creek as it too will be expanded, according to Western Stevedoring president Brad Eshleman.

process with local stakeholders as Port Metro Vancouver assesses whether or not it should be built.

“This is a very significant terminal development in the Burrard Inlet.We’ll definitely be doing all our due diligence with respect to dealing with the community, dealing with the environmental issues.

We very much want to be a good corporate citizen in dealing with all this stuff,” he said. “This is really a good news story. It’s really positive news for the farmers throughout the Prairies.

It’s very good news, we believe, for job creation on the North Shore and the community.”

f you think amalgamating local governments will save money, think again, a Fraser Institute study concludes.

The study’s applicability for the city and district of North Vancouver, however, is widely open for debate.The Ontario-based review involved unwilling municipalities with little in common being forced together with almost no time to study how it could be done effectively.

The common assumption here is that the city would have the most to lose if its taxpayers suddenly had to take on the cost of servicing the sprawling district.That’s an assumption we’d like to see challenged with a fresh look into the matter.

But the questions we need to be asking shouldn’t just include dollars and cents.There are two separate rats’ nests of bylaws, planning policies, accounting methods, public processes and

administrative hoops to jump through that could be harmonized for the benefit of residents, businesses, non-profits, senior levels of government and First Nations — basically everyone.

Are the city and district really such radically different places? It’s true, the city’s residents skew younger, live in smaller homes and have a lower income, but that’s true of all downtowns and the city effectively is North Vancouver’s downtown.

The 1907-split never should have happened to begin with.Think of the modern day equivalent of the Lonsdale corridor and waterfront industries hiving themselves off to save a few bucks.

The reward for amalgamating the two North Vancouvers might not be magically lower tax bills but rather a restoration of our collective sanity.

And you can’t put a price on sanity.

When trees fall, environment loses

Dear Editor: Re:West Van Mulls Monster Homes, May 29 front-page story Although I do not have any personal objections over a “monster house” as a final product, I do have serious concerns during the construction of them.

It is my understanding that West Vancouver does not require an erosion and sediment control plan to accompany every building permit application; it is only required after an offence has occurred.The retention of vegetation, including trees, is the best practice in controlling the erosion of soils.

old and it’s removed and a new one is put in its place, that’s probably better.”

These two comments are an insult to the people of West Vancouver and every other district that this company operates in. First, I would assume that trees have to be sacrificed in order to increase the house footprint. Second, the removal of an old tree (define “old”: five years? 50?

500?) rarely is “probably better” than replacing it with a newer tree. Older trees offer more food, living habitat, and protection for insects, birds, and animals than younger trees. Many large dead trees (or “snags”) have more ecological value than smaller, younger trees.

And most importantly, larger trees offer the most erosion protection of soils. As a former director of the West

Vancouver Streamkeepers, and as a practicing certified professional in erosion and sediment control, I know first hand the common practice of developers on the North Shore. Soil retention practices are not valued, and the receiving environments (storm sewers that dump into waters of local creeks)

Only after the District of West Vancouver and other municipalities implement mandatory sediment control plans to accompany building permit applications will developers take this issue seriously. Residents spoke of “forest esthetics” at the meeting last week.

These esthetics go beyond residential yards and roadways.They include the local creeks, wetlands, and riparian areas that historically supported an old growth forest filled with — you guessed it — old trees.

Church vandals send troubling message Dear editor: Vandals have struck twice recently, damaging a six-foot crucifix outside of St. Pius X Church.The legs of the corpus have been damaged, the first time on Easter weekend, breaking them completely off, later to be found on the median of Mount Seymour Road. After finding an artist who specialized in the restoration of religious statues, and having the crucifix repaired, it was again damaged in May. This is not the first time vandals have struck St. Pius X. During Christmas 2014, the Christ Child figure was stolen from a manger scene outside the church, and later returned without one of its arms. And other vandalism has been occurring on church property, including another statue.

What does this mean?

Is it misguided youthful mischief? Or is it a more serious message? Is it religious intolerance?

Of concern to me is that this crucifix is at the centre of the Columbarium, which is a final resting place for some members of the St. Pius X parish family. It may be that the vandals do not realize that ashes are interned there and the damage therefore is equivalent to vandalism in a cemetery.

There are many reasons for deliberate malicious vandalism of a religious object, or for vandalism of a cemetery, ranging from racial hatred, morbid curiosity, ritual desecration, personal spite to a lack of respect for cultural and religious traditions. Or it could be a deliberate but not a malicious act such as misguided youthful

As a member of the St. Pius X community, I want to “love my neighbour” and

with compassion I seek to understand the situation.

I hope that the acts of vandalism are not a deeper malicious message, certainly as we seek to build a diverse tolerant community. A diverse, tolerant community includes the respect of religious artifacts, and cultural customs. As we

build a world of compassion, tolerance and acceptance of

all, I am confused about the ongoing damage of property and religious symbols.

Although he has experience in other trades as well, including auto mechanics, Drayer says he is heading to university for computer studies. He enrolled in the carpentry program because it looked interesting and he wanted to try something different.

Cormier isn’t surprised that Drayer isn’t planning on pursuing a career in the carpentry trade yet and maybe never. He describes the wide range of students in the program as “high academic students to students just trying to find themselves,” and says the goal of the program is to open doors and provide options.

About a year ago, the school built a structure to house the program. It looks deceptively small on the outside, but a quick visit inside reveals a large workspace with a concrete floor and one full wall that can be opened to the outside.

Mezzanines are loaded with planks and beams, and a drying room at one end has large fans roaring, circulating air around piles of wood.

The main area smells of fir and cedar, and Cormier points out different

projects in various stages of completion, including a wall lying flat on the floor, covered in shingles.

His teaching philosophy is “learning through making, and making is thinking,” and he says he is “teaching the curriculum (in which) you have to build things so you can take it all apart then build something else and take that apart.”

Materials are reused as much as possible, including nails. In a second room off the main space, shelves are lined with a vast array of carpentry, building and surveying tools, including a magnet to pick up bent and fallen nails.

“We recycle as much as we can,” notes Cormier.

The room looks like a professional work trailer, but across from the collection of tools is a wall of hooks loaded with knapsacks.

School binders and sneakers (with an empty bag of corn nuts crammed into one) are piled fairly neatly on the floor.They are a reminder that the users of these tools are still just teens.

In the main part of the course, the students make everything by hand,

and are only introduced to power tools toward the end of the program and only for certain projects.

As he tours the structure, Cormier’s passion for the program is evident in the way he talks about it. He says it has evolved beyond what he originally expected.

This year, Cormier

connected with two local businesses, Apex Excavating and Burley Boys tree service, to get salvaged logs for the students to use with a new classmate of sorts: an Alaskan sawmill. It is a chainsaw with a guide attachment that Cormier admits is a little old, loud and slow.

But when he shows off the work it has done in the outside area, it is clear he enjoys using the borrowed relic.

“When people ask us what we’re building we say ‘We don’t know,’” he reports with a smile. “You start cutting and see what happens.”

He explains that they never know what a log is going to look like inside until they slice it open.

“Like that one there, there are no knots or anything, it’s totally clear,” he reports, pointing to a piece standing upright.

The last one they cut was a piece of fir tree, notes Cormier, pointing it out.

“It was kind of gnarly,” he says, adding they needed some pieces out of it to make a beam. “When I cut it open, it’s probably the most beautiful piece we’ve cut.”

He pulls out his phone

like a proud dad, displaying the photo he took of it then moves to show off “something really cool.”

Two smooth pieces sit on top of each other and fit flush.This is called “bookmatching,” and means the two pieces are mirror images of each other, including the shape and colour.

Cormier says cutting open logs is like opening up pages of a book to see what’s inside.

“The first log we cut was probably the most exciting because you cut the first one off and open it up. (It’s) the first page of a book.”

This year, the carpentry program is trying to raise enough money to purchase an electric-powered band sawmill that will be easier, faster, safer, more efficient, and can cut bigger logs.

Fundraising would also go toward the purchase of a trailer to haul logs to the school site, and also a forklift to move logs and projects around.The students would then be certified to run a forklift as part of their training.

“The process was quick and received little provincial assistance.

As a result, wages were harmonized upwards in this period, which had a significant impact on the cost of service delivery,” the report stated.

Beyond that, residents in the more far-flung parts of the larger municipalities began to demand the same level of service offered in the denser parts.

The report does note, however, some factors that make a before-andafter comparison difficult, among them: dramatic changes in financial reporting and property tax assessment methods in the same period, as well as entrenched downloading of responsibilities from the province, including big-ticket items like social housing and highway maintenance.

Rather than slamming the door on prospective future amalgamations, the report goes on to suggest cities pursue partial amalgamations or shared service agreements to find efficiencies.

Former city council member Guy Heywood, who fought to bring about amalgamation from within during his last term,

rubbished the report.

“It has no applicable context,” Heywood said, noting the unpopular amalgamations were forced on unwilling participants with unnecessary haste, mismanaged by bureaucrats and used by opportunistic unions as a chance to “level up.”

The two North Vancouvers, by contrast, share every important social, recreational, cultural, educational and health institution, and the only reason they were separated was to satisfy the developers of the day, Heywood said. “(The report) is a cloak or a tactic for distracting from what’s obvious to a fair-minded, commonsensical person in North Vancouver,” he said.

Heywood continues to press for amalgamation and is in the process of setting up a citizens’ forum, using volunteers from the community with expertise that could better inform a new study into local amalgamation.

City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto said he has not read the Fraser Institute report but it reaches the same conclusions he has been preaching for years.

“All the research that I’ve done has said that those costs are enormous.

The savings that you get never make up for those costs that you spend,” he said.

Mussatto said people still make “ludicrous” assumptions that amalgamation will result in just one municipal hall operating with half the staff.

“Ninety-five per cent will still remain.You’ll have one city manager instead of two, one mayor instead of two, but the costs are huge to changing those systems.

You’ll find if you’re doing it for financial reasons, it does not make sense,” he said.

Mussatto said the city and district, along with Metro Vancouver, already share in the services where it makes the most financial sense for taxpayers — water, sewer, garbage, air quality.

“Those things that the region is doing now are already achieving big savings,” he said.

Mussatto, a staunch NDPer, said he finds himself in the rare position of standing in agreement with the right-wing Fraser Institute.

“They must have hired some new people at the Fraser Institute because, usually, I am not in agreement with them on a whole lot of what they say,” he said with a laugh.

The District of West Vancouver is being sued by the former operator of the Larson Station restaurant and concession stand at Gleneagles Golf Course.

Sea View Restaurants Ltd., which is owned by Enzo Taffara and his wife Alice, was five years into a 10-year contract when the District of West Vancouver terminated the deal last November.

The district justified the move, saying the operator wasn’t living up to the terms of the contract by not opening the restaurant for breakfast as soon as the golf course opened at 6 a.m.

But according to Sea View’s lawyer John Whyte, the hours hardwired into the contract were “simply untenable” for any forprofit business. “The clubhouse and concession receive no, or virtually no, customers during the early morning hours, later afternoon hours, at any hour in inclement weather, or during winter,” the claim stated.

Over the years, the Taffaras and the district agreed to amend the operating hours to keep the business viable, the claim states, but the district has neglected or refused to pay Sea View the early buyout payment agreed to in the original contract. That would amount to about

For damages, Sea View is seeking the full amount of the buyout payment or reimbursement for the $250,000 the company spent on improving the facility, as well as compensation for the district’s continued use of kitchen and dining equipment that the Taffars paid for, despite repeated requests and demands for the district to stop.

It’s up to the court to decide what general or punitive damages are merited, but Whyte said his calculation of the market value of the supplies, if the district were to rent them, would be $400,000.

“That number is a moving target because every day West Vancouver maintains possession of our client’s property and makes use of it to run its events, from where we sit, that number should increase,” he said.

The Taffaras have found work elsewhere, but the ordeal has been arduous for the two, who emigrated from South Africa.

“They have worked very hard to build a business to serve the people of this community and it has been extremely difficult for them to have their business taken from them by, of all possible actors, a government,” he said.

“That’s just not what they had expected would occur to them in Canada but it has.”

The District of West Vancouver declined to comment on the suit but confirmed that a new contractor has been hired to run the clubhouse. Council called for expressions of interest from caterers in January and signed a contract with Peake of Catering in April. The company was selected for their experience in catering and ability to meet the service levels required by the contract. The hours in the new contract are “very similar” to the ones Sea View signed and “definitely better” than what was being offered by Sea View, according to John Wong, West Vancouver’s manager of facilities and assets.

Those involved in the Looking Glass Foundation celebrated an important milestone in the organization’s 13-year history Tuesday with the official opening of a new Vancouver site housing its groundbreaking residential treatment program serving youth with eating disorders.

The Looking Glass Residence offers a live-in care and treatment program for B.C. youth and young adults, males and females, ages 17-24, who are experiencing a variety of eating disorders.

North Vancouver’s Dolores Elliott is a cofounder of the charity, having banded together with two other mothers of daughters with eating disorders after coming to realize the lack of local care and treatment options.

From lengthy wait lists to having to travel outside of Canada to the United States to access expensive help, she and her peers sought to make change at home to better serve local families that

Together, they launched the foundation in 2002, focused on prevention and support.

“We went to numerous conferences everywhere to learn as much as we could and we were able to actually sit in with all of the doctors and professionals that you probably would take months to get an appointment with, but they all spoke to us, knowing

that we were just parents of children. It was good for them to get our perspective on what we were going through as well,” says Elliott, who currently sits on the foundation’s board of directors. She’s pleased to report her daughter, now an adult, has recovered from her illness, and is leading a healthy life and running her own business.

After a couple of years spent fundraising, the

Looking Glass Foundation’s first major initiative was the launch of a summer camp 10 years ago.

“That was our initial credibility test,” says Elliott.

They were pleased then with the confidence expressed by community members, entrusting their children into the care of the trained and experienced health professionals they’d assembled, and the annual camp has continued to be

well-supported.

“That credibility grew for us and was really instrumental in moving forward and understanding what we needed to do to open up our own residential treatment centre,” says Elliott.

Hearing their former site was on the market, Elliott and her husband and their extended family, the Lougheeds, decided to purchase the former Ronald McDonald House and gift it to the Looking Glass to serve as the residential program’s new, more central home.

“We’re not the type of family that likes our name everywhere, we’re very discreet about what we do. But this is really important and I think for other families that have the means to open their eyes and see what they can do out there too. Let’s pass it on,” she says.

At the same time, the foundation partnered with the Provincial Health Services Authority, which assumed responsibility for operation of the program, in collaboration with the Looking Glass.

“It’s our program, but the government is running it,” says Elliott.

An official grand opening and ribbon cutting event was held Tuesday with representatives of partner organizations present, including B.C. Children’s Hospital, as well as local dignitaries, such as North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite.

The Looking Glass Foundation and Provincial Health Services Authority are integral to helping young people struggling with eating disorders, said Thornthwaite, who serves as parliamentary secretary for child mental health and anti-bullying, in a press release. This partnership will provide people suffering from eating disorders with a beautiful

Their new Hand-in-Hand Group Support will see four to eight participants joined with a trained facilitator and interact in person, by phone, or online, based on where participants live and their individual needs.

Their upcoming E-Learn Training initiative will allow for community members interested in volunteering with the foundation to be properly trained no matter where they live in the province.

Elliott wants people to know the Looking Glass Foundation is there for them and those involved are ready and willing to answer any queries they might have.

“People should never feel like they’re alone. Especially parents when they’re dealing with this. This is not an easy thing trying to understand why your child is doing what they’re doing because it’s just the most hideous disease,” she says.

Publicly funded, program participants find their way to the Looking Glass Residence starting with a referral from their doctor.

So far the new site has served up to 14 people at a time. Depending on how ill a young person is and how they respond to treatment, their stay could range from a typical minimum of 60 days to an average length of approximately 120 days or more, says Elliott.

The program’s approach to treatment combines group and family therapy, meal support and education, guided recreation and leisure activities, and psychiatric, pharmaceutical and medical care provided by a multi-disciplinary team of medical and mental health professionals.

“It takes a couple of days to adjust, like anything, but I think once they realize they’re there, they all realize how lucky they are,” says Elliott.

The Looking Glass Foundation is continuing its fundraising efforts to support all of its programs and services — the Looking Glass Residence and summer camp program included.

The Early 70’s: The original News, now the North Shore Free Press, had been publishing for two years but it was still very much a hand made paper.

Earlier this year, Joan Koebel had to put a familiar adage to good use: The show must go on.

It was a show that had already been rebooked and her troupe, Seniors Acting up, was suddenly down to four, less than half its members.

“And I thought, oh, this is going to be interesting,” recalls Koebel.

They didn’t have their regular sound volunteer, so hooked up a CD machine with a mic through a small speaker, and the show went on.

“We managed,” says Koebel with a laugh.

She chalks up the afternoon’s success to the experience of the group’s members, and the fact that they have been together for so long. Most of the current members have been in the group for about eight years, and come with previous performing experience.

director but downplays her role a bit, is a retired teacher who spent most of her life involved in performing arts.

“I’ve always been involved in music and theatre, always, from the time I was a kid,” she says.

She helped run productions in the school she last taught at, and still returns each year to help out. As an actor, she still performs on stage in various theaters across the Lower Mainland.

When she retired from teaching, Koebel was looking for a place to sing again but didn’t know what to do. “I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for.”

While visiting her mom in a care facility she happened to run into the entertainment coordinator there and they started chatting about the types of groups that were entertaining at the care facility.The co-ordinator suggested she check out Seniors Acting Up and Koebel has been with them ever since.

When Wilfred Fawcett was 25 he accidentally cut the top of his finger off while working with a saw.

It meant the end of playing the clarinet he had started on when he was 14 years old. Before the accident, Fawcett played with swing bands all over Vancouver in the 1940s and 1950s.

His boyhood music experience was with a well-know musician named Lance Harrison.

“Everyone knows Lance Harrison and Mr. Baker, they used to have a nightclub

right at the corner of Marine Drive and Park Royal,” recalls Fawcett, noting Harrison was a Dixieland musician and taught him all about it.

Fawcett tried to play professionally but “most musicians are very poor,” he notes with a laugh.

He decided to get a good job a bit more schooling and ended up with an insurance company called Fawcett Insurance Agency. When he retired in 2000, he passed the firm on to his son.

On April 16, former Royal Canadian Navy Seaman Henry Greenwood of West Vancouver received the Legion D’Honneur, France’s highest honour, from Jean-Christophe Fleury, the Consul General of France in Vancouver.

A press release from the event noted Greenwood received the medal at a dinner commemorating the 70th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day and the liberation of The Netherlands by Canadian troops.

The event was hosted by the Honourable Michael de Jong, Minister of Finance and Government

House Leader of the Province of British Columbia.

VE Day, which was on May 8, honoured the 181,000 British Columbians who fought in the Second World War, including the 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives and the more than 7,600 Canadians who died fighting in the Netherlands, according to the release.

As a seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy, Greenwood participated in many rescue missions.

at various venues in the Lower Mainland, mostly at care facilities, seniors residences, and community centres, as well as specific group events.

“We’ll entertain anywhere,” Koebel reports with a laugh, but notes the content is mainly geared toward a senior audience.

“Our mandate is just to bring some fun, joy and music into the lives of people,” explains Koebel.

All the members are seniors and they meet once a week for rehearsal at Silver Harbour Seniors Centre, where the group is registered as a program.

They get together every Thursday morning for two hours from September to June and a little less during the summer.

Each year they put together one production for the entire season that contains a variety

of singing, skits, routines, and individual performances. An earlier incarnation of the group started out by doing plays, but it evolved over time into more of a variety show.

Currently there are eight members, and the group is always looking for more, especially men.There is an informal audition process, and candidates should have some performing experience, such as singing in a choir, or acting, singing, or dancing in a group or on stage. Despite the group’s variety of performing backgrounds, Koebel says they don’t generally have creative differences.

“We all have different strengths that we bring, and I think everybody recognizes the different strengths that people have and support them because of it.”

I can understand how worried you must be. The initial reaction of many seniors faced with declining vitality is a downright rejection of the notion that assistance is needed.

The key here is to be patient, remain positive and introduce the idea slowly. By introducing help slowly, you give your parents time to accept the idea. For example, you could reassure your parents by suggesting a trial period, after which the service can be cancelled at any time. It’s also important you present the support as being for YOUR own peace of mind.

Fawcett recalls thinking to himself on the way home that he had never considered playing the sax because the tip of his finger was gone, but he decided to give it a try.

He borrowed a saxophone from his neighbour’s son and “within minutes I was playing again,” he recalls.

Later he went to an instrument mechanic, who fixed his clarinet so Fawcett could play even with his injured finger.

In 1995, Fawcett got together with some other local musicians and formed the Deep Cove Swing Band. But after seven years, Fawcett says the group wasn’t getting

He explains that it’s difficult to find venues to hold a group of 16 to 20 musicians.

Still not ready to give up on performing, Fawcett formed the Deep Cove Old Time Jazz Band in 2002.

He explains that old time jazz is Dixieland style from about 1900 to 1950.

“It’s real old, old time music,” he notes.

The group currently has between six and eight members and performs 20 shows a year.

B.C. wines fare well at national competition

Notable Potables At last month’s All Canadian Wine Championships, B.C. swept the field in white entries, winning all of the white vinifera categories with the exception of a couple.

There’s no argument that it was an impressive showing.

Competitions can be a mixed blessing both for wineries and consumers.

Often overlooked is that they all cost money to run.With labour, venue, glasses and paying judges, the dollars can quickly add up. Most of those costs are passed on to the entrants, meaning it can be costly to

submit wines widely.

The All Canadians is one of the most broadly spread fields with a variety of wines, including fruit wines, cider and other products.

However the vast majority entered remain grape wines (vinifera and hybrids) from across the country, including Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Ontario entries were low, perhaps reflecting recent difficult vintages.The number of entries from B.C. remained high, no doubt a reflection of the excellent vintages that wineries enjoyed in the last two years. B.C. outnumbered Ontario by about two to one, meaning the odds of a B.C. wine winning a medal were higher.

The Okanagan seems to have arrived at a consistency of white wine styles that appeal to consumers and judges. A glance at the results confirms the continued success of a number of producers whose wines win not only at this competition but also at important competitions elsewhere.

WV man helps build community Contributions to sporting world are immeasurable

Recently namedWest Vancouver’s Citizen of the Year, Geoff Jopson credits his achievements as a volunteer and community builder to the influence of his Uncle Fred, “a model of citizenship for me and indeed for all of us.”

The tradition of community contribution goes way back in the Jopson family. A seventhgeneration Canadian, Fred’s forebears include a Father of Confederation, the principal author of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and a naval captain who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Fred, who turned 96 on May 22, grew up in East Vancouver. He played soccer as a boy, switching to hockey when the Forum opened in 1931. “I was a rink rat working at the concession, throwing peanuts and catching nickels, in exchange for free ice time.”

In 1938, he played for the Vancouver Bruins in the first NHL Oldtimers Exhibition game, opposing the legendary Cyclone Taylor of the Vancouver Millionaires, winners of the 1915

Stanley Cup. Extra training in tool and die making and metallurgy “got me my first decent job, at the Boeing plant at Coal Harbour.”

When the Second World War started, Fred helped set up the Boeing plant at Sea Island where he was in charge of tool and die design. It was a time of innovation in metals and technology, all introduced at speed while the war raged on.

A condition of Fred’s exemption from army service as a skilled tradesman was his assignment to the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers, No. 2 Company,West Vancouver.

With his rifle on his back, Fred patrolled Hollyburn Ridge, familiar and wellloved terrain from years of hiking and skiing, where there was space to dream. “‘What a beautiful place this would be to live,’” he recalls thinking.

“I have difficulty managing in my home on my own.”

After the war, Fred thought he might continue to work in the aircraft industry. He made his way to California but “there were no mountains and nothing green. I tired of it and came home.”

In 1949, Fred married Corinne Ryder and his dream of a home in West Vancouver became a reality.

Fred and his brother Bob, Geoff’s father, built homes in a new subdivision bounded by Taylor Way, Keith Road and a horse pasture on Marine Drive that became Park Royal North.They worked on each other’s houses, building one after another from a plan made by contractor Vern Rest, and using the same tradespeople. “I wouldn’t say I built the whole house, but I built a lot of it,” says Fred, “the electrical and the plumbing and painting.”

Fred and Corinne raised three children who grew up with their cousin Geoff. Fred was keen for the offspring to “hurry up and grow so they could play sports.”

Since there was no ice rink on the North Shore in those days and plenty of playing fields, soccer became the family sport. Fred and Bob raised a team they called the West Vancouver Blue Devils that, coached by Fred, won four consecutive provincial championships or “it could have been three wins and one tie,” says Fred — an outstanding record either way.

Fred had found his vocation: to help youth develop into well-rounded adults through sport. He was with the Canadian teams at the Olympic Games in Montreal and Los Angeles, at the World Cup in Mexico.

He’s a life member of a host of soccer associations, recipient of awards and had trophies named for him. Of all his achievements, Fred is most proud of developing youth soccer in Canada and the United States through team exchanges and

When the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in Canada, Fred will be listening to the games.

Macular degeneration has affected his eyesight, but Fred still has his memory and his imagination.

“I see moves that others don’t see; it’s like ballet.

Soccer is ‘the beautiful game.’”

In the words of Fred’s nephew Geoff, “Fred is one of the true builders of a new community here in West Vancouver.”

There are others like Fred, whose contributions to our community are still within living memory.

Hopefully their stories will also be told and heard, recognized, preserved and celebrated as essential elements of our cultural and social heritage.

A hot weather reminder for dog owners To me, it seems redundant to have to write about this every year, but there are still people who can’t grasp the concept of how quickly a dog can die when left in a vehicle on a hot day, even when the vehicle is parked in the shade with the windows rolled down.

One of the main reasons I think people have difficulty understanding this is due, in part, to our desire to anthropomorphize our dogs. This means that we humans tend to give our dogs human characteristics.

This results in us comparing ourselves to our dogs in many situations, including being left in a hot car. If a human can sit in a hot vehicle in the sun with the windows down, then heck, a dog can too right?

Wrong!

The reason humans can tolerate sitting in a hot vehicle better than dogs can is because we have a far more efficient thermoregulation system than dogs. This means we are able to cool down, even

higher the humidity, the more difficult it is for the sweat to evaporate which is why we feel uncomfortable and sticky on muggy days.

This last point is incredibly important when it comes to our dogs.

Dogs are not designed the same way humans are when it comes to thermoregulation. Their bodies are covered in fur, not skin covered in millions of sweat glands. Dogs sweat through the pads of their feet. But an interesting fact is that the sweat glands on their feet were not designed as a part of their thermoregulation system, but rather to add traction.

This means they sweat to get a better grip on slippery surfaces. Think about that for a moment!

A dog’s main form of heat exchange (getting rid of body heat) is by panting.

As a dog pants, it pulls in air from its environment into the moist areas of its upper respiratory tract.

This increased airflow causes an increase in the evaporation of heat within the moisture of the

Humans stay cool in a variety of ways, one of which is sweating.

The entire human body is covered in several million sweat glands that automatically regulate when and how we sweat.

These sweat glands are the human body’s main way of cooling itself. As perspiration evaporates from the skin, it absorbs a large amount of heat from the body through a liquid-to-gas exchange.

The hotter it gets, the more you sweat and the more you cool down. Also, the

dogs respiratory tract. In essence, it kind of works the same way perspiring does for us. But for dogs, it happens inside the body instead of outside.

Additionally, when a dog pants, it expels hot moist air from its body.

Now then, knowing that a dog cools itself through panting — which entails inhaling air into its body to improve evaporation of moisture and expelling the hot, moist air from its body — what do you think happens to a dog when it is left in a hot vehicle with little or no air circulation and high humidity?

Let me explain.

When a dog expels moist air from its lungs as it

attempts to cool itself down through panting, it is actually creating a humid environment around itself.

When this environment is a hot vehicle with no air circulation or proper ventilation, a dog’s ability to cool itself diminishes even quicker because, just as humans experience on hot humid days, the humidity of the environment (which the dog creates by panting in a poorly ventilated area) prevents adequate evaporation of the moisture. So, this means a dog heats up even faster when it is panting in its self-created humid environment. It doesn’t matter that you have

parked in the shade with the windows slightly open.

If there is inadequate ventilation and no fresh air, the dog is not able to use its panting to cause the evaporation of moisture to cool itself.

Capeesh?

What does all this mean? It means, leave your dog at home! Don’t leave it in the car on hot days, sunny days, cloudy days or humid days. Just don’t do it!

level this season, winning the provincial tournament for the eighth year in a row last weekend at Queen Elizabeth Park. And this one was one of the toughest yet.

The Cavaliers faced a familiar North Shore foe in the provincial final, meeting the Carson Graham Eagles for the second straight

year. And it was the Eagles who seemingly had the upper hand coming into the tournament, having beaten the Cavaliers in their two previous meetings this season. But when it mattered most the perennial champs played like champs again, winning the final by a score of 7-4.

Ravens, Cavs grab silver and bronze

It was silver and bronze for West Vancouver’s two powerhouse AA rugby squads as both Rockridge and Collingwood fell in last week’s provincial championships to a super athletic squad from St. Michaels University School.

“Still licking my wounds — still in a bit of a dark place,” Rockridge head coach Perino Zambon said with a chuckle when contacted a few days after his Ravens lost 27-3 in the AA championship final held May 30 in Abbotsford.

“They were good. They were full value for the win.

They were quite talented — a good team. We kind of knew we had to play the perfect game to beat them, and we didn’t.”

The win completed an incredible year for SMUS as the school won the boys AA soccer, basketball and rugby titles, with several players suiting up for all three teams. Rockridge was attempting to win the AA crown for the second

straight year, having beaten Collingwood in the final last season. Neither West Van squad could keep up with the Vancouver Island team this year, however, as SMUS knocked off Collingwood 30-12 in the semifinals before breaking open a close final by outscoring Rockridge 24-3 in the second half.

“Once you have a few days to think about it you recognize that that St. Mikes team was a pretty special group,” said Zambon. “Winning basketball and soccer and rugby provincials points out that they are a very athletic group. . . . They played a very expansive style in the final which was pretty impressive. They threw the ball around really well.”

Rockridge made the final by ringing up three straight shutouts, including a 29-0 win over South Kamloops in the semifinals.

“Defensively I thought we played pretty well throughout the whole tournament,” said Zambon. “I guess it would have been nice to get a zero
