Conservation officers have shot and killed a cougar spotted around the lower Capilano River.

The cougar first started showing up in the

neighbourhood earlier in the week. It hadn’t shown any signs of aggression so conservation officers opted to just monitor the situation, hoping the cougar would move on.

“But is was obvious it made itself at home there.

We started getting more and more sightings,” said Peter Busink, conservation officer.

“It was up on numerous balconies and patios.This was in the middle of the day as well. It goes against the natural behaviour of cougars and represented an elevated and unknown risk to the residents of the area.”

Cougars can’t be tranquilized and relocated, Busink said, so officers

made the tough decision to kill the big cat.

When the cougar was spotted along the Capilano River near Park Royal on Thursday,West Vancouver police cordoned off the area and kept the public away. A conservation officer arrived shortly after and shot the young, adult female — a little bit skinny but otherwise healthy — weighing about 32 kilograms.

The think tank rated the West Vancouver School District first in the province among public school districts — tied with Revelstoke — based on academic test scores, including results on provincial exams.The North Vancouver School District was also in the top five, sharing fifth place with four other school districts.

Help pours in for River Woods

The 26 families displaced by last week’s fire at the RiverWoods Housing Co-op will eventually be able to move back home — although most are facing a long wait to find somewhere to live in the meantime.

There is no official word yet on what caused the blaze that put 76 people out of their homes though co-op’s insurance company has agreed to fund a rebuild.

eight to 10 units will take at least six weeks before they are repaired. “The other 16 to 18 units are looking at 12 to 16 months, best case scenario,” said Diane Bennett, the co-op’s president. “Nobody’s getting home anytime soon.”

Denise Wait and her family have been struggling to pull the pieces of their lives back together in the wake of the blaze. “Our place is pretty much a writeoff.We were on the ground floor where there’s lots of smoke and water damage.

All the electronics are pretty much a write-off. It’s just disgusting.The smell in there is horrible,” she said.

The family’s insurance adjuster found them a place to live but it’s a $5,000-

a-month luxury home on the other side of North Vancouver, meaning the kids will have to stay with friends so they can continue going to school.

“We don’t need luxury right now.We just need a roof over our heads,” she said. Competition for family rental units is high and the burned-out residents still having to carry on with dayto-day responsibilities.

The few things they were able to salvage from the fire are the kids’ sports medals and teddy bears “which need some work done on them.”

The fire’s intensity and destruction, however, has been matched only by the generosity of the nearby residents and businesses who have been coming by the co-

op’s common area to drop off donations.

“Everyone is really blown away by it,” Bennett said.

“It’s heartwarming to think what a fabulous community we are blessed to live in. It’s really hard. Even complete strangers show up.You say ‘Thank you’ but it doesn’t seem enough.”

Residents in the co-op are required to have their own contents insurance, though for some families that’s not enough to cut it.

“Some of our members are very, very low income and (have) very poor insurance coverage,” Bennett said. “When somebody’s only got $12,000 of living expenses, it’s not going to last them very long.”

Co-op members are

trying to fundraise for those people. BlueShore Financial has set up a trust for the River Woods fire victims.

Donations can be made at the Parkgate branch or by phone for BlueShore members.

There is also a Facebook group, Community Support for River Woods Housing Co-operative, acting as a clearinghouse for matching residents’ needs with potential donors. A FundAid.ca crowdfunding campaign has been created to help raise money the families as well. Cyclist crosses path with cougar From page 1 sightings of the Capilano cougar came from Canyon Heights resident Craig Pamplin who met the cougar on the bike path in Klahanie Park on his daily commute home from downtown on Wednesday afternoon.

“I was riding my bike along and I saw this cougar come out of the bush and then walk maybe 10 feet toward me on the bike path,” he said. “I just kind of froze and got out my camera.”

The cougar stayed about 20 or 30 seconds before casually making its way back into the bushes. Pamplin warned two seniors coming down the path as well as a young mother with a baby in a stroller.

“I said, ‘You might want to rethink this and turn around.’ She did,” he said.

Pamplin said he never felt at risk during the run-in.

“It didn’t even cross my mind until after, actually. It was not aggressive at all,” he said. “It was very shy and just wanted to get out of there at that point.”

After learning the cougar had been killed, Pamplin’s comment was simply that it was a beautiful animal but he understood why it needed to be done.

3 trail rescues in 2 days Play it safe in backcountry, North Shore Rescue urges

The sun is shining. The trails are opening and North Shore Rescue volunteers are cancelling their weekend plans so they can rescue lost and injured souls from the backcountry.

“For sure, this is the start of our summer busy

season,” said Doug Pope, NSR search manager, after the team carried out three rescues in two days.

“People are starting to go outdoors and hike the North Shore Mountains more. We get busier because people get into trouble back there.”

The team completed two successful rescue missions on Friday

evening, starting with a call from Lions Bay Search and Rescue who needed to long-line rescue two hikers stranded near the Lions.

“We suspected they were in Harvey Creek drainage, which is a nasty creek gully that drains below the Lions. People who have gotten off the Lions trail had wandered into that area before and we’d had one recent fatality in that area,” Pope said.

Rescuers in a Talon helicopter spotted the pair,

frightened but uninjured, and long-lined them out one at a time.

Before the second subject was even deposited back to the rescue site, West Vancouver police alerted them to a hiker on the Howe Sound Crest Trail with severe muscle cramps and unable to get out on his own. He was part of a group of six Surrey teens who were all in over their heads.

That’s especially important in an affluent community like West Van with plenty of competition from private schools, he said. “When (parents) send their children to public school, they’re making a conscious effort to select public education.”

Kennedy stressed while it’s nice to be recognized by the annual report card, the numbers put out by the Fraser Institute only measure one piece of the learning that happens in schools. “I think you have to be really careful in giving it too much weight,” he said.

“I always encourage parents to go and visit schools” rather than look at rankings, he said, adding that conversations between parents on the soccer field are likely more important in where families choose to send their kids to school than Fraser Institute rankings.

Regardless of the reason, families from across the Lower Mainland have been attracted to West Van public schools. Of the approximately 7,000 students enrolled in West Van public schools, 1,000 live outside the school district.

Private schools on the North Shore were well represented at the top of the Fraser Institute’s high school rankings. Collingwood was the highest-ranked school on the North Shore followed by Mulgrave and St.Thomas Aquinas. Among the North Shore’s public schools, Sentinel ranked highest, followed by Handsworth, Rockridge,Windsor and West Vancouver.

Rob Millard, president of the West Vancouver Teachers’ Association, said he doesn’t put any stock in the Fraser Institute rankings. Millard said public school teachers all do a good job of helping the wide variety of kids who attend school to learn.

Peter Cowley, the report’s author, said the report card provides a reasonable measure of how schools are doing academically.

West Vancouver School District has had to cut $330,000 from next year’s budget as a result of “administrative savings” demanded by the province.

Kennedy said that won’t mean layoffs but will mean cutting back on special projects in the school district.

e all know the Internet is a place that breeds bad behaviour.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that a vile “comedy” routine of shouting a sexist, degrading phrase at female reporters while they are live on air has been spread there.

This week, the tide turned when reporter Shauna Hunt confronted a group of these MENSA candidates as they taunted her. Cameras rolling, Hunt told them how disrespectful and demeaning it was. Then she posted it on social media.

Consequences for the now-outed Neanderthals have been swift.

One highly paid manager lost his job, which we applaud mainly because it spares his female co-workers from having to share a workspace with his knuckle-

dragging misogyny.

Good on Hunt for doing something to make this behaviour stop.

It’s a sad reflection on society that grown men feel they can act this way in public with impunity.

These “pranks” target women with sexual vulgarities as they try to do their jobs. The message is: “Your work doesn’t matter.” The message is: “shut up.”

When Hunt didn’t turn the cameras off, the men behind this stunt got a lesson that should be obvious to anyone over the age of 10: if you’re tempted to say something you wouldn’t want your boss or mother to hear, something that would out you as a misogynist jerk, don’t say it when the TV cameras are rolling.

Or better yet, put on your big boy pants, check your moral compass and don’t say it at all.

Notley looking at a rocky road ahead They occupy opposite points of the political spectrum, but I bet Premier Christy Clark and newly elected Premierdesignate Rachel Notley will get along just fine in the years ahead.

But that’s not to say Clark won’t secretly hope that Notley’s government falls flat on its face from time to time.

That’s because any serious miscue by the Alberta New Democrats will reflect badly on the B.C. New Democractic Party.

As a result, two years from now when B.C. voters head to the polls again Premier Christy Clark may have the perfect poster child to point to as an example of the bad things that can happen when the NDP gets into power.

And certainly the odds favour Notley looking at a very rocky road ahead.

While Notley established herself as a first-rate political campaigner, almost all the caucus members she helped get elected have zero experience in running government at any level and in fact lack experience

in pretty much of anything other than teaching, nursing and social work.

And the circumstances for this untried and untested youthful gang of political novices to take power couldn’t be more daunting: government finances are in terrible shape, the province’s number one industry (oil extraction) is gasping for air and there is no relief in sight.

Some have compared Notley’s electrifying win with the historic victory

by Dave Barrett and the NDP in 1972, since both topped long-existing political dynasties. But the comparison ends there, since

Barrett’s caucus had a dozen seasoned MLAs and caucus members came from a wide variety of career vocations.

But a more apt comparison for the Notley neophytes is to the sudden rise of the B.C. Liberals in the 1991 election.They came out of nowhere, at one point in the campaign they were leading the polls, and on election day ended up forming the official Opposition.

Gordon Wilson was the party leader, but other than him and several other folks, the caucus was a collection of inexperienced, politically naive and underwhelming people who never dreamed they had even a remote chance of ever being elected.

If the B.C. Liberals had indeed formed government in 1991, the results would likely have been disastrous, as the talent pool from which to choose cabinet ministers was very shallow indeed.

Notley may be facing precisely the same situation.

Her caucus consists of people who likely never thought they were going to win, since the party didn’t

begin its meteoric rise in the polls until the campaign had begun and candidates had already secured their nominations.

Aside from the inexperience problem, there is the issue of the Alberta NDP’s policy platform. I suspect most voters’ intent was focused on kicking out the Progressive Conservative government and saw the NDP as the best horse to ride to accomplish that goal, and paid less attention to what the NDP was actually proposing to do.

Notley has said she will raise corporate taxes by one-fifth, gradually raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and likely raise oil and gas royalties, as well as consider a new regulatory regime for the oil industry.

Already, there are signs the business community in Alberta is hyperventilating.

This is all well and good for those who hate the business community or at least the fossil fuel industry.

But any fleeing of business from Alberta means an economic downturn, and less government funding for

health care, education and social services (or higher taxes and/or debt).

Of course, B.C. would stand to benefit from any business that relocates in this province because of a friendlier tax regime, something Clark will no doubt seize upon for her political advantage.

In the short term, however, look for Clark and Notley to forge an alliance on a number of issues.The new Alberta premier will likely support Clark’s five conditions when it comes to the approval of pipelines running through B.C., and the two will probably work together on climate change issues.

Clark will also surely

exploit Notley’s support for the Kinder Morgan pipeline, framing it against the B.C. NDP’s opposition to it. She knows that issue ties B.C. New Democrats up in knots.

Clark and Notley share similar attributes.They are both charismatic, positive women who exude an energetic and youthful outlook on things.Working together on key issues, they could be a potent force on the national scene. Clark will be wishing her new colleague all the best, but only up to a certain point, especially as the next provincial election draws nearer.

Backcountry adventurers should do thorough research on their trip in order to make sure they are physically prepared, let someone know where they’re going and when they’ll be back and allow for extra time, according to North Shore Rescue.

Bosa puts call out for public art proposals Calling all artists: Bosa Development and the District of North Vancouver are seeking a team to create public artwork for Lynn Valley town centre.

Bosa is proposing to construct a mixeduse commercial and residential development near Mountain Highway and Lynn Valley Road that includes the addition of three new streets and two public plazas.

According to the Request for Expressions of Interest and Qualifications document,

the redevelopment site is envisioned to be a “palette” of integrated art, standalone iconic pieces and signature artwork.

The total budget for three commissions is $445,800.

Interested teams must be comprised of a minimum of two artists residing in Canada.Teams that include architects, landscape architects or other design professionals won’t be considered.

The submission deadline is Friday, June 19 at 2 p.m.

Seymour 9-1-1 thanks Dear Editor: On May 3 my husband and I went for a run on the Seymour Demonstration trailway. He was ahead of me when near the sevenkilometre mark he suffered a seizure. By the time I caught up and realized what was happening, a group of people had already stopped to help.

They had called 9-1-1, given their jackets to keep him warm and were consoling him. After I got there they

helped me roll him onto his side and waited with us for the ambulance to arrive.

Thank you to everyone who helped us that day. It was truly wonderful and heart warming to witness so many people willing to lend a hand.We feel so lucky that you stopped and acted upon the situation immediately.

North Shore parents are once again being encouraged to think twice before supplying their kids with booze.

Wednesday marked the launch of the annual “Think BeforeYou Let Them Drink” campaign, an awareness initiative supported by Vancouver Coastal Health, police, educators and the Squamish Nation.

“We know that more than half of high school students on the North Shore have tried alcohol,” said the North Shore’s chief medical health officer, Dr. Mark Lysyshyn. “Although this rate has decreased over the past few years, it’s actually higher than the provincial rate.”

He added students on this side of the Lions Gate Bridge drink in “risky ways,” often consuming four or five drinks within a couple hours.

“Not surprisingly then, over half of North Shore students who have used

“We have to prioritize on safety issues and we’re usually engaged in an emergency response to a kid who may need to go to the hospital,” he said.

The fine for buying alcohol for a minor is $500, while teens caught with the substance can be fined $230.

The “Think BeforeYou Let Them Drink” campaign was launched in conjunction with grad season and B.C. Youth Week.

Inside a guitar shop planted in an industrialcommercial corridor on North Vancouver’s Main Street there is an intimate connection to a bevy of world-famous musicians from Slash to Shania Twain.

You would be forgiven for not being familiar with Prestige Guitars, as the brand has surged in

popularity primarily south of the 49th parallel.

“Even in our backyard people come into our store and go: ‘Prestige, is that a brand?’” says Prestige Guitars proprietor Michael Kurkdjian.

Yet the custommade axes and acoustics fashioned from B.C.-raised trees — maple varieties, spruce and cedar — are conceived and masterfully built in the back of the Main Street guitar shop

and then shipped to the far reaches of the world.

“Our most exotic (shipping) location is going to be the South Americas, of course,” reveals Kurkdjian.

What started as humble beginnings in Burnaby in 2003 has grown into a bustling business for Prestige — which today produces about a hundred guitars a month, destined for the hands of mainstream artists and

music enthusiasts alike.

The craftsmanship Prestige puts into the guitars, right down to the inlay work handcrafted out of mother-of-pearl and sparkling abalone, has afforded the brand some endorsement from music industry heavyweights and some hardware from the Guitar World magazine awards.

“It was pretty exciting, people were noticing our acoustics more (after the Oprah interviews),” says Kurkdjian, adding it’s an honour to having someone of Twain’s stature playing a Prestige.

guitarist Slash and his current bandmates rock out on Prestige guitars while on tour and in the studio.

In fact, Slash has commissioned Prestige to customize an electric axe for him. A luthier will start with Prestige’s “heritage standard” solid body design and add a black matte finish adorned with tattoo-like drawings.

Musicians drop by to put on free shows in the shop

“It’s a guitar that you would picture Slash playing, actually,” chuckles Kurkdjian.

Legendary guitarist Joe Walsh, of Eagles fame, has also picked up a Prestige axe, along with musicians from the Matthew Good Band and Wide Mouth Mason. And in February, guitarist Will Evankovich joined the Prestige club.

Evankovich had this to say about his new Prestige Heritage Hollow TR: “Plays like a dream, sings like a bird, and is as stunning as a super model.”

The guitar-making magic, or “cool things” as Kurkdjian puts it, happens inside a 2,000-square-foot workspace at Prestige’s Main Street headquarters.

The process starts with raw wood bought in Chilliwack, which is then shipped to South Korea where it is manufactured using machines before being sent back to North Van for the wiring and final assembly.

“And so we get the naked guitars and continue building them in our back room,” explains Kurkdjian.

Music enthusiasts can stop by the store and watch the luthiers work their magic in the back, fine-tuning a new guitar — or peruse the finished products gleaming from their racks in a handsomely appointed showroom complete with a grand

chandelier. There is also a special room in the back, called the vault, where iconic Gibson guitars from the ’50s and ’60s are on display.

A little known secret is some of these major recording artists that are Prestige’s clients have randomly stopped by the store in recent months and put on free, intimate and interactive shows for whoever showed up. Guns N’ Roses guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Matt Good, and the guys from Slash, have all put in an appearance at Prestige.

Given the musicians’ hectic schedule, Prestige can’t announce the shows in advance. However, anyone that is interested

in seeing these world-class guitarists up close and personal should subscribe to Prestige’s Facebook page for the latest news, says Kurkdjian, who promises the shows don’t disappoint.

“Oh yeah, anytime we host one of these events, it’s quite the party for us,” he attests.

Kurkdjian has come a long way since cutting his teeth in the ’90s with Vancouver-based guitar maker Larrivée. As a 21year-old luthier apprentice, he learned how different types and densities of wood create unique tonal characteristics: guitars made from maple trees, for example, create a brighter, chime-ier sound, while rosewood has a deeper

tone.

Kurkdjian’s music roots can be traced back to when he was a teenager living in North Van. One Christmas break, the then Carson Graham secondary student took a job at a second-hand guitar shop.

“At the end of it, (the owner) gave me 400 bucks and I turned around and bought a guitar and amp — and never looked back,” recalls Kurkdjian.

These days, the dad plays more “Baby Beluga” than the blues, but still “whips out the electric guitar every now and again.”

Architect Barry Downs specifically mentions him as an early influence in the development of landscape architecture.

Greg Bellerby: When Richard Neutra lectured here in the ’40s he really exposed a lot of architects to the idea

of modernism and the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. He was definitely a big influence.

North Shore News:The Neutra poster was made by Gordon Smith. Fascinating Vancouver history in itself.

What sort of research was involved in putting together West Coast Modern House?

Greg Bellerby: Basically it dealt with looking at what was published at the time about modernist houses.

In particular there were maybe two or three sources that they came from. One was the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Journal and they were one of the first publications to really look at modernism.They spent a lot of attention onVancouver and what was going on here.

Historical essay lays out the essentials From page 27

essay that was written by Ned Pratt in 1947 and it talks about contemporary architecture in British Columbia. It really sort of lays out what isWest Coast architecture or the idea of the West Coast style. He cites the environment, the weather, the light, the amount of rain we get, and how to deal with that, and also the idea of the post and beam house — that really became the iconic image of West Coast houses.

This article came out in the journal and over the years there were a number of other articles that talked about the idea of post and beam and alsoWest Coast architecture. RonThom wrote an essay that was published in the journal in the early ’50s.The other great source wasWestern Homes and Living magazine which now is just calledWestern Living. It was first published in 1950 and featured a lot of new, modernist homes.

It did articles about them and the architects and even about the people who had commissioned these

houses. It’s still publishing today in a different sort of format but a lot of those early magazines were a great source of material. House and Garden, Canadian Architect had articles as well. I also did personal interviews with Barry Downs and a couple of the photographers who took photographs at the time.

North Shore News: Where did the Gordon Smith poster come from?

Greg Bellerby: That came from a collection out at UBC from the Belkin Gallery.They have quite an extensive archive and their poster was in their collection at UBC.

North Shore News: Jana Tyler’s essay deals with landscape architecture and its significance in Vancouver.

That seems to have played a role in the development of a West Coast esthetic.

Greg Bellerby: Landscape architecture doesn’t get a lot of publicity or space in the literature so we thought it would be interesting to include it.

The idea behind theWest Coast Modern House is the integration between the outdoor and the indoor and the landscape around the house was almost as important as the house itself.

Richard Neutra and other people put forward this idea that you should not just plop down a house but integrate it into the landscape.

Some of the early architects like Ned Pratt, Fred Hollingsworth and Ron Thom would also do the landscaping and recommend certain plantings and site the house specific to the lot. In the post-war period there wasn’t really a school of landscape architecture.There were a few people that came and started working with

architects. Robillard was one of them who started offering services as a landscaper and a landscape architect. It was something that developed slowly in the post-war period but it became equally important.

North Shore News: Chris MacDonald’s essay, “The Next Modern House” specifically mentions the Smith houses and the Downs houses in the context of the development ofWest Coast Modernism.

Greg Bellerby: In both those examples there were two of them and so he looks at how design had changed. Arthur Erickson who designed both the Smith houses looked at both those sites very carefully. One is forested and just hovers above the landscape.

The second house sort of bridged natural rock outcroppings so again the house was very much integrated into the landscape.

And Barry’s houses in southVancouver and on a cliff inWestVancouver got very different treatments but with same intent and

conscientiousness about materials and how the house would function within the landscape. Chris’ idea was very much about making the comparison over time.

North Shore News: In today’s terms the houses are quite small but they are built in spectacular locations.

Greg Bellerby: Yes in Vancouver we’re very fortunate to have these spectacular sites for these houses with the beautiful outviews to English Bay or Howe Sound. In the houses that are situated in really flat spaces the gardens became the views in a sense and played an important part in the house.

North Shore News: Your introductory essay outlines the history of modernism in residential architecture.

West Coast Modernism was influenced from elsewhere but developed in specific context so it was really like a homegrown, organic development.

Greg Bellerby: I did a previous book, West Coast Residential, and it looked

at a mid-century modern house and a contemporary house from five cities: Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and L.A. There was what I call a communication that went up and down theWest Coast from Los Angeles through to Vancouver. Richard Neutra came up to lecture, Fred Hollingsworth and Ron Thom went down to the coast to San Francisco and L.A. and visited architects and brought back people.

Barry Downs studied in Washington State, Arthur Erickson taught in Portland.

There was a lot of influence up and down the West Coast. It really reflects a real uniqueWest Coast style andWest Coast approach to houses.Vancouver had its own particular version of that because of our accessibility to great timber, fir, cedar which was readily available and relatively cheap so that became the material whereas in southern California it was more concrete and steel.

There’s a real relationship between what went on esthetically in L.A. and Vancouver.

That’s why we are continuing to clean up the Woodfibre site, like our plan to remove 3,000 creosote-coated piles from the waterfront, which will provide a better habitat for fish. Tired of black in Lonsdale Dear Lonsdale: This season dresses are all the rage! They are wearable pieces that are modern and trendy.There is an opportunity for personal flare as there are so many colours and patterns to choose from. It is definitely a dress season.

Everywhere you turn you will see ladies wearing dresses.The two trendiest styles are the mod look and the music festival look.

The mod look is derived from patterns and silhouettes from the 1960s and ’70s, but it is not a retro look.The music festival look is inspired by the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Both are fun trends that can be casual or professional.

The mod dress features a fit-and-flare cut.There is a cinched waist created by the seams and hem lengths fall to the knee. Belts are popular with this silhouette.This look resembles a uniform, but with so much more style.The mod look incorporates great colours with great patterns.

It is a bold presentation.This style of dress can also be one colour or a monochromatic tone-on-tone colour scheme for a more conservative look. Although the silhouette may be subtle, the colours and patterns are what make the statement.

The music festival look is loose and long.This is a fluid and lean look, not a messy one.

Although these dresses can have many patterns and colours, staying within a theme or family of colours enhances the lean and fluid silhouette. Layering pieces under and over this style of dress can create a variety of statements.

This is more than a summer hippie look. By adding pieces to this dress you can create whatever look fits your lifestyle needs.

The patterns on the dresses are what make this season so exciting.There are geometric and floral patterns.

Geometric patterns include chevron, gingham, vertical and horizontal stripes.The stripes are modern in that they resemble a bar code. Some of the lines are oversized, creating an abstract look.

Florals are a traditional look, but today’s dresses are not traditional.The prints are expressive, not passive. Some are exaggerated and repeated to create a new pattern. A pattern might be spliced to look somewhat striped and some florals are being digitized to look more modern. A mash-up of prints is the biggest trend in patterns this season. It is as though a traditional image is multi-tasking to create an ultramodern look.

Fabrics make a statement with dresses.The mod look has a cotton, twill or linen texture.This creates its tailored silhouette.The festival look has a lighter, gauzy, airy feel that creates a fluid silhouette. Some new fabrics to look for are midwash denim.The zipper is a visible detail that creates a trendy vintage look. Lightweight fabrics can be layered with 3D appliques to add dimension to your style. Eyelet dresses and lace trims in many colours add fashionable flair without looking too feminine.

These trends create a nouveau street style.The fashion culture is becoming a modern graffiti of professionals, millennials and everyone in between who want to embrace fun trends.

Fashion is the sum of the collective input of designers.

It is the invention and reinvention of concepts from across the decades that fuel the multi-billiondollar industry. There are some designs that become icons and within every woman’s closet are clothes that have been influenced by them.

Author Josh Sims looks at style icons from

all aspects of fashion and divides the chapters into specific items including outerwear, skirts, dresses, trousers, tops, underwear, leisure and swimwear,

shoes and finally accessories. In each section Sims presents significant designs that influenced the fashion of the day and in most cases many of the designers who followed.

Photographs and illustrations fill the pages with examples of each item. Sims explains the creation of the design and its impact as well as the public response at the time, which in some cases was far different than the later opinions. Models, actresses and celebrities appear in the best examples, such as Twiggy in a miniskirt, Audrey Hepburn wearing a little black dress, or Kate Middleton in a trench coat.

And this isn’t only my nightmare: if you’re a misogynist — or a member of the Duggar family — you’ll be horrified that Furiosa shares equal billing with Max in the kick-ass department, and that the only people left with a lick of sense in this poisoned, post-apocalyptic world are

a tribe comprising only women, and they hold the key to future civilization.

Relentless, visceral action, restrained acting, astounding detail in costuming, makeup and production design. It all adds up to one hell of a ride. Thank you, Mr. Miller, for a beautiful nightmare.

Sadly we announce that in his 81st year, Sohan Sundher from North Vancouver passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on May 7th, 2015.

Sohan was predeceased by his daughters Brenda and Valerie, sister Paulo, brother Jeet, brother-inlaw Tara and loving niece Geri Basi. Sohan is survived by his wife of 60 years Mavis, brother David (Jinder), daughter Denise (Mike), son Randy (Lori), grandchildren Vicki, Curtis, Shane, Aaron, Nadeana and Frank, nine great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Sohan will be greatly missed by his peers in the lumber industry as well as many relatives and friends from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. A man of a lot of words, Sohan’s many stories will live on in infamy as well as the man himself. Love always your family. It is with great sadness the family of Laura White (nee Plunkett) announces her passing on May 7th, 2015 at the age of 90. Born January 17th, 1925 in Dublin, Ireland Laura immigrated to Canada with her husband Ernest and four children, settling in West Vancouver. She loved the village and seawall of Ambleside and took great pride in the raising of her children and spending time with her grandchildren in what she considered one of the best places to live.

Predeceased by her husband Ernest and survived by her four children Avril (Malcolm), Sharon (Hugh), Russel and Derek, her 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Ever feel like you’re being bombarded with choices?

No? Then just walk down the snack food aisle in any major supermarket — or go shopping for a sports car.

Anyone who gripes about the golden days of performance or who wishes manufacturers paid more attention to the enthusiast market simply isn’t paying attention.We are up to

our eyeballs in smart little sportsters, and for the Nissan Z, that’s a really big problem.

When the 240Z came out, it didn’t really have much direct competition.

Sure there were Mustangs and Camaros to contend with, but the Z was more of a corner carver. It was a reliable E-Type Jaguar for the everyman.

The modern Z, on the

other hand, is quite an expensive car, and thus it’s hard to make a case for it as a value-priced everyday driver. And the market these days, as mentioned, is crammed with everything from V-6 Hyundai Coupes to Ecoboost Mustangs.

But what’s this? A 370Z for less than $30,000? Cloth seats, 300 horsepower, rearwheel drive and a stick shift?

Maybe it’s time to pop this

box off the shelf and give the Z a second look.

You can see why.While not as pretty as the original — and few cars are — the 370Z manages to be all hunched, muscular fury, yet still retains a nonthreatening face. It’s a bit fishy looking and very Japanese, but it looks great with LED running lights and those big 18-inch alloys filling the wheelwells.

It’s also fairly compact, something that’s not really apparent until you park it next to an old Acura Integra or similar.This is a proper-scale sports car, not oversized at all.

Environment This being a base model, the Z doesn’t exactly impress on the inside. If

anything, it reminds me of a Scion FR-S. But then again, those two cars are fairly close in price now.

With that in mind, the basic Z has everything a driver needs, and few distractions. Some features are a bit goofy, like the extra dials on the dashboard that display less-than-relevant information like battery voltage, but the seats are grippy and comfortable and the entire instrument cluster moves with the steering wheel.

Rear trunk space is surprisingly good, thanks to the opening hatch.The old 350Z was pretty cramped, limited by a huge struttower bar that blocked golf clubs and the like.This 370Z’s a lot more liveable, and while I wouldn’t recommend one to an

NHL goalie for equipment hauling duties, it would work as an everyday car.

Performance The 370Z is old enough to remember when the badge on the back of a car actually had something to do with engine displacement. Under the nose is a 3.7-litre V-6 that makes 332 h.p. at 7,000 r.p.m. and 270 foot-pounds of torque at 5,200 r.p.m.

That’s a healthy amount of scoot, and it becomes doubly impressive when you consider the price point is within $500 of a basic Mazda MX-5. Suddenly leather seats and satellite navigation just look like fat to be trimmed — for this kind of money, the Z is all See Little page 44

However, everything else about driving the Z in city traffic is relatively painless.

The suspension is very taut, but with the slight extra sidewall protection provided by the 18-inchers (instead of 19s), ride comfort is liveable.The V-6 is built to rev, but has enough grunt for you to be lazy with the gear changes.

The accelerator travel is quite long, so you do have to really want to stir

up the 370Z to get it into attack mode, but here too is a revelation.There’s no Sport button, just a switch if you want to turn traction control off.The sportiness of the Z is entirely up to the driver — so here we go.

This is a great little oft-overlooked car, as fierce to drive as it is to look at. Despite the short wheelbase, it doesn’t snap into oversteer, but will very gently let you know it’s rear wheel drive when you blast down an onramp.The V-6 really wakes up towards the end of the rev range, so
