The District of North Vancouver is joining the province and federal government in starting a $50-million project aimed at undoing the traffic quagmire at the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing bridgehead.

Representatives from all three governments met in a North Vancouver traffic loop Wednesday to unveil plans for a new interchange on Highway 1 at Mountain Highway.

Under the conceptual design, Mountain Highway will get a new four-lane overpass, linking it directly with Brooksbank Avenue,

plus new on-ramps onto the Cut, northbound and southbound. Mountain Highway will also be home to a new off-ramp from the southbound Cut. That should make for an easy connection to the Fern Street overpass via the widened Keith Road bridge, which the district is currently working on, according to Gavin Joyce, the district’s manager of engineering. When completed, the project will have the effect of separating bridge traffic from eastwest traffic, which currently jockey for the same space.

“We think it will be significant,” Joyce said. “It’s not going to solve all of the problems but we believe 30 See Junction page 3

The North Vancouver motorcyclist critically injured in a crash on the Upper Levels Highway in August has died.

John Quesenberry, 61, was riding west near the Lonsdale Avenue exit on Aug. 14 when he became the victim in a chain reaction accident.

The driver of a pickup truck lost an unsecured ladder onto the road.When the driver went to fetch it, other vehicles slammed on their brakes and dodged out of his way, causing Quesenberry to lose control of his motorbike and hit the concrete median, sending him over the motorcycle’s handlebars.

The province is putting up the biggest pot of funding, at $23.5 million, which North Vancouver’s two Liberal MLAs Naomi Yamamoto and Jane Thornthwaite were on hand to announce Wednesday. North Vancouver Conservative MP Andrew Saxton joined to declare $12.5 million in federal funding for the project and the district is putting up $14 million for its share, including $5 million spent buying the shuttered Keith Lynn alternative secondary from the North Vancouver school board. The school site sits where the new overpass will go.

“When we think about all the things that are important to us, time is probably one of the most important things. This will save people time. What a precious gift to give people on the North Shore,” Yamamoto said.

The project’s targeted completion date is the spring of 2018. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is aiming to get the technical design work done over 2015.

During that time, engineers will be looking into what types of walking or bicycling infrastructure

the new interchange will accommodate and district staff will be “exploring opportunities to replace, enhance or protect affected areas and uses, including trails,” according to district spokeswoman Jeanine Bratina.

Redoing the Mountain Highway interchange is the first step in a three-part

project that will see the Mount Seymour Parkway and Main Street/Dollarton interchanges redesigned.

The total cost is estimated at $140 million.

Wednesday’s announcement has been years in the making, said David Davey, a Blueridge resident and retired engineer who volunteered

on the working group that helped come up with the design.

“I think it’s going to be a great improvement.

It’s not going to solve all your problems. We still have the highway cutting the municipality into two halves but given all the restraints, it’s a great solution,” he said.

North Shore homeless shelters have 45 extra spaces on standby in preparation for inclement weather.

In extreme weather conditions, 20 temporary sleeping mats will be added at the 45-bed Lookout Emergency Aid Society shelter on West Second Street at Bewicke Avenue.

Those needing shelter can also be accommodated on sleeping mats at North Shore Neighbourhood House.

On Nov. 11, North Vancouver issued its first emergency weather alert of the season, which lasts three nights.

The North Vancouver man who spent nearly 27 years in jail after being wrongfully convicted for a string of sexual offences started his civil suit against the Crown in Canada’s top court Thursday.

The Supreme Court of Canada will decide if Ivan Henry’s charter rights were violated after the Crown failed to disclose relevant information during his original trial.

The court will also decide if Henry is entitled to seek damages.

Henry, 67, was imprisoned from 1983 to 2009 after the courts found him guilty of 10 sexual assaults. He was declared a dangerous offender and sentenced to an indefinite number of years behind bars.

But during his trial, the prosecution did not disclose the discovery of DNA evidence, the existence of an alternative suspect and how similar sexual assaults continued after Henry’s arrest.

In 2002, police reinvestigated the unsolved sexual assaults and obtained DNA matches for the alternative suspect, who then pleaded guilty to several of the assaults.

Eight years later, the B.C. Court of Appeal overturned Henry’s convictions and entered acquittals on all counts.

The David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights and the B.C. Civil Liberties Association have jointly intervened in the case.

So far, the Crown has argued Henry’s claim should not proceed because he is unable to show the implicated prosecutors acted maliciously.

The province’s appeal court agreed, but Henry was granted leave to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada, which agreed to hear his case last May. Henry has served more time in jail than any other Canadian wrongfully convicted of a crime.

The case could potentially result in Henry being awarded a multimillion-dollar settlement.

Driver urged to come forward From page 1 After Quesenberry spent several weeks in a coma and suffered severe brain damage, friends made the decision to take him off life support last week and he died on Nov. 8, according to friend Linda Winterton who visited every day for 11 weeks.

The identity of the driver who triggered the crash is still a mystery since he drove off before anyone else caught in the accident could get his licence plate number, according to the RCMP’s Port Mann Highway Patrol. “We have had no information as to who the driver was that lost the ladder and right now we have no other leads,” said Cpl. Garth Domm, RCMP spokesman. “The file is concluded, unfortunately.”

Should someone step forward or a witness offer information leading to a positive identification, police could lay a charge of failing to properly secure a load, Domm said. “From a legal standpoint, that’s the only offence that the person would have committed,” he said.

here’s a phrase politicians spout before votes are cast: “This is the most important election of our lifetime!”

We usually dismiss self-serving hyperbole, but Saturday’s election — mathematically speaking — is more important than previous elections.

Voters will send mayors, councillors and school board trustees to their posts for four years instead of three.

The City of North Vancouver’s mayoralty race has been the most compelling and contentious contest of 2014 but not necessarily the most significant. No matter how upstanding or incompetent a mayor might be, that position is strictly ceremonial without the will of council.

We beseech voters in the districts of North and West Vancouver, where each mayor was acclaimed, to choose

their council wisely. There might be a few candidates who should be passed over like a dented rutabaga in the produce section, but there are plenty of intelligent candidates with well-defined platforms vying for your vote.

Ottawa and Victoria collect more money and wield more power but our municipalities are where we live. Who can make your community better?

Who can work with senior levels of government? Who can do their work despite senior levels of government?

You don’t need to vote because it’s your obligation, because it’s easy, or because democracy is one of the best ideas human beings have had so far.

We believe you should vote because your community belongs to you. This may not be the most important election in your lifetime, but it is important.

Tweet meant to highlight homeless problem Dear Editor: I write in response to two letters to the editor, one on my use of bike racks authored by Ms. Pamela Roskell, and the other on my use of a picture of a homeless person that I tweeted out, written by Ms. Kate Black.

The use of C-media bike stands located throughout the city for campaign marketing purposes is a breach of the city’s sign policy, at sections 2.6 and

4.0, adopted by council on March 8, 2004. Despite this fact, city staff authorized the use of the C-Media bike racks by Mayor Darrell Mussatto. I devised a fully legal and creative solution to combat the advantage granted to Darrell.When I become mayor, I will put forward a new sign bylaw that ensures no one will ever again be able to use the bike racks for campaign purposes.

Being homeless is no joke.

If we continue to pursue the current “developer first” strategies, the 23 per cent of our three- and four-storey walk-ups currently under attack from developers will rise to more than 40 per cent.

These units are occupied by some of our most elderly, vulnerable, fixed income and price sensitive residents, and as such those people have no ability to pay the market rates applicable on newly developed condos or

rental properties.

The picture I took and tweeted out of a homeless person sleeping in a Lonsdale alcove is but one example of the more than 400 homeless residents living on the North Shore.

If we continue to pursue these failed “Mussatto Slate” strategies and developersfirst initiatives, our homeless count will increase even further.

We need to find creative

solutions to help homeless people, and that will not come from pretending the problem does not exist. I do not apologize for framing the issue.The more people who see and understand how terrible the situation is, the more chance we have of getting the public resolve for change.

We need to find creative solutions to the challenges of homelessness by refocusing the community’s energy.

By drawing attention to the problem of homelessness we will heighten community awareness. By following Darrell’s strategy of throwing grandma and grandpa under the bus and continuing with his unabashed support for developer projects, we will not resolve this issue; we will make the problem even worse.

KM becomes new enemy in pipeline war For the past several years the energy giant Kinder Morgan has benefited in the public eye from the simple fact that it wasn’t Enbridge, another big energy company wanting to do what KM wants to do: build a pipeline to carry bitumen from Alberta.

Enbridge took on the role of villain right at the beginning of the B.C.Alberta pipeline saga. It became the chief focus of attack from various environmental and First Nations groups, as it was painted as a major threat to the environment and the pristine shores of northern British Columbia.

The company was ridiculed by many for its seemingly tone-deaf approach to shaping public opinion and trying to curry support from the various parties (First Nations, local communities, the B.C. government etc.) required for any chance of success for its proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.

But as Enbridge fades, for now at least, into

the background as the perception grows that the Northern Gateway pipeline is unlikely to be built, the focus has shifted to Kinder Morgan’s proposed pipeline into the shores of

Burrard Inlet.

And now it is Kinder Morgan that has taken on the role of villain in the eyes of many, and it can be argued it is outdoing Enbridge when it comes to alienating the public.

Up until a few months ago, Kinder Morgan was engaged in educating the public — through many public meetings and presentations — about the merits of their project.

pipeline and shipping oil on tankers for years with nary a problem.

The fact that Kinder Morgan had an established pipeline and tanker operation already in place seemed to give it a leg up over Enbridge when it came to establishing good public relations. However, the company’s deft approach to courting public support has been replaced by a clumsy, ham-handed and confrontational style that has been called bullying tactics by many.

Veteran energy executive Marc Eliesen (an ex-CEO of BC Hydro) quit as an intervenor in the federal review of the Kinder

Morgan proposal, blasting the National Energy Board as being “captured” by the oil industry. He also accused Kinder Morgan of refusing to answer all kinds of questions, or of offering flippant replies.

As well, Kinder Morgan was not content to simply file an injunction against protesters trying to stop their survey work on Burnaby Mountain.The company (whose enemies love to refer to as a “Texas-based oil giant”) went substantially further and filed lawsuits against four of the protesters (arguing, among other things, that facial expressions of protesters could be viewed as some kind of assault).

Now, B.C. is no stranger to companies going to court to get injunctions against environmentalists (although arguing facial expressions is a form of assault is a first). In the 1990s, forest companies seemed to be spend their entire legal budgets fighting protesters during the socalled “war of the woods.”

It was expected that for all that time that Kinder Morgan flew under the radar, content to let Enbridge take all the heat and attention, the company would eventually be the prime target of the environmental movement.

Norouzy-Pooresfahany’s identity was confirmed through DNA analysis after her mother alerted North Vancouver RCMP to her missing daughter in September.

Norouzy-Pooresfahany had only minimal contact with her mother after coming back to Canada in December, 2011.

Norouzy-Pooresfahany had no fixed address, but spent time at homeless shelters in both North Vancouver and Burnaby.

District of North Vancouver council has abandoned plans to heat the wave pool at Karen Magnussen Recreation Centre with green clippings.

The Bio-Mass enterprise was slated to cut the 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide belched out annually by the centre’s old natural gas boilers by 300 to 350 tonnes, according to district energy project manager Steve Jenkins.The switch to a more environmentally friendly heating source was announced in a 2013 event featuring NorthVancouver MP Andrew Saxton, fed-

eral transportation minister Steven Fletcher and district Mayor RichardWalton.

Council announced the project’s cancellation Nov. 3 after making the decision at a closed meeting Oct. 20.

The district received a $632,000 federal and provincial grant in 2013 to fund the project and planned to have the wood-fed system in place earlier this year.

However, implementation was far more expensive than anticipated, according toWalton. “We ended up effectively having a $630,000 grant that was $600,000 short,” he said.

Even the cheapest of project bids was approximately $1.2 million with other proposals at

around $1.5 million.

The green waste program would have saved the municipality $12,000 to $15,000 each year in wood removal and disposal costs, but the shortfall was simply too great to overcome, according toWalton.

The district is currently attempting to achieve the same goal with a different retrofit, including capturing wasted heat from the ice plant and improving sealing in the building.The district is also examining a new ceiling over the ice rink that would minimize heat radiation, ostensibly reducing refrigeration costs.

The retrofit is tentatively scheduled to be complete by the end of 2015.

against individuals (which include Simon Fraser University professors and a citizens’ group) would seem to stray beyond the rules of combat in these affairs, and into the more sensitive and worrisome turf of denying

free speech and the right of protest.

I’m not one of those who favour shutting down all kinds of resource developments, whether they involve pipelines or not. Saying “no” to everything — energy projects, port expansions, mines, train shipments — seems

to be all the rage these days for a determined portion of B.C.’s population. But while their anti-development positions may well cripple the provincial economy should they ever take hold, these folks still have the right to be heard and to take what reasonable steps — which include civil disobedience — they think are required to

achieve their goals.

Kinder Morgan was running with the ball quite effectively for a number of months in this long game of pipeline politics. But as it nears the goal line, it appears that it has fumbled the ball.

This real love of the outdoors and the wilderness, that’s the culture that we’re coming from and the story that we’re telling and I think it’s kind of unique in that way,” he says.

Valley Uprising covers the area’s climbing history going back 50 years, starting with the rebellious pioneers who chose to adopt a bohemian lifestyle and live off the grid in campgrounds on the valley floor, similarminded to the likes of Jack Kerouac and John Muir, to today’s top climbers, who keep the tradition alive while simultaneously pushing the envelope, incorporating base jumping and walking high lines.

No matter the generation,Yosemite’s cliffs have continued to beckon. Rivalries,

In the same week that Johns Hopkins announced that there is a virus that makes people stupider, Dumb and Dumber To (no, not a typo) lands in theatres.

In it, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as Lloyd and Harry, two of the dullest minds Rhode Island has to offer.

The Farrelly brothers are back too, essentially churning out the same film but with different locales.

And why not? The 1994 film netted over $247 million and attained cult status. And let’s face it, the Farrelly Brothers haven’t felt love from critics since There’s Something About Mary a few years later.

There is a streamlined look this season that features shoes, boots and handbags with a structured shape. This trend is easier to match. Black is always a good investment. But, if you want more of a fashion statement, then try navy, aubergine, dark green cranberry, or any dark bold colour that you desire.

Shoes, boots and handbags definitely make a statement.

You can choose a streamlined look or the new “accessorize your accessory” trend. Details on accessories include lots of hardware which can range from subtle to bling. If you choose a subtle approach to your accessories then you can match the detailing and nothing else. That is a smart look.

The embellished handbag is the best place to start as it can incorporate all of the trendy detailing or none at all. As well, you can get a great bag without paying designer prices.Your handbag can pull together your outfit. Almost every size and shape of handbag is in fashion, from a clutch to the new Jackie bag.

What’s trendy about the handbag is the structure, which can be either architectural or hobo. The detailing is where you can make a huge fashion statement.

Detailing includes hardware and texture. Hardware means zippers, buckles and chains.

Texture encompasses leather,

suede, crocodile and any other fabric with a printed, embossed or quilted finish. Fringe is also quite trendy. Handbags can have both texture blocking and hardware.

Texture blocking means there is more than one texture on the handbag. Handbags can have many of the hardware details, but keep in mind, the colour of the hardware must match. Gold is making a comeback.

Shoes also have detailing, but it’s not as heavy. Loafers have been updated with hardware.

Lace-ups and tassels are still in fashion. What really stands out is the shoe or bootie that reaches the ankle. This particular shoe is the trendiest and can carry hardware.

The heel of the shoe varies from a utility heavy sole to a chunky stacked heel. The shoe is a great opportunity to make a statement.

Boots have a modern look. The new boot reaches the mid- to lower calf. There can be as much detailing or texture blocking as you like.

This boot can also have a streamlined look with one trendy colour and the side zipper being its only embellishment. This boot looks great with flared skirts.

The motorcycle boot has also made a comeback with the trendy detailing. This boot is not rugged; it is a clean urban trend.

Somewhere in the middle is the Chelsea boot, which is the new everyday boot.

Heels on today’s boots are easy to walk on, low to an inch high, and somewhat thick.

This season, there is a contemporary look with a fabulous punch.

It’s one of many hardships people face in the small village, which is comprised mainly of women, children and orphans as many of the local men have died in the country’s civil war.

But a local non-profit organization is hoping to drill a well in Amedichi, bringing a reliable source of clean water to the villagers’ doorsteps. The Obakki Foundation, started by West Vancouver resident Treana Peake, is raising money to build the well through the sale of 500 limited-edition INK scarves. The scarves ($29 each) are a lightweight modal-blend and 100 per cent of the net proceeds go to the well building project.

The Obakki Foundation is the philanthropic offshoot of Peake’s Obakki Designs fashion brand, which makes the products used to raise money for the foundation.

City residents deserve a better City Council; one more positive, progressive, and decisive; setting grand, yet realistic goals; then getting on with them with the right level of community engagement.

A good councillor makes decisions by listening to the people and by working with other Council members as a team. This is the type of councillor I will be.

Construction must cause far less disruption and frustration in our lives by better scheduling. The City’s “bus bumps” project tore up the first 3 blocks of Lonsdale. The foot-of-Lonsdale waterfront deck replacement has closed off a large section of sidewalk and squeezed the roadway. A large condo development is underway at 2nd and Lonsdale. There’s been 2 years of Low Level Road work. This has seriously disrupted pedestrians, cyclists and traffic all within 5 blocks and all at the same time!

Residential and commercial taxpayers deserve a break.

The City’s spending, per resident, is 5th highest of all Lower Mainland municipalities. For years, your property taxes have increased far more than the rate of inflation. No-one has taken a good, hard look at whether City taxpayers are getting the most cost effective government you’re paying for. I will do that.

Residents deserve long-overdue civic projects to be built soon. The Harry Jerome Rec Centre was a dive when I played hockey there when I was nine. We must get on with its replacement. The Shipyards waterfront revitalization project, the decision to retain the Lucas Centre properties entirely for new public amenities, and the replacement or renovation of the Silver Harbour Centre for seniors, must get going.

I want to be known for: Sharing my vision for the City with the people, learning of their vision, then leading Council to get on with our consensus.

Anyone who’s ever tried to make it in the performing arts world can probably sympathize with Alex Owens. The protagonist of the ’80s blockbuster Flashdance is a steel welder by day and a bar dancer by night who dreams of getting accepted into a prestigious dance school.

While Karli Dinardo has never worked in a steel mill, she has taken on plenty of odd jobs while pursuing a career as a performer. But,

for the next few months at least, she’s gainfully employed in her field having landed the lead role in the North American touring production of Flashdance — the Musical.

“It hits close to home for a lot of people that are involved in the production,” says the 20-year-old Melbourne, Australia native.

“Everybody has that dream.

We’re all in this industry trying to pursue this as a career and we all fight for what we want.”

Dinardo would not be born for another decade when Flashdance hit theatres in 1983 and made off-theshoulder sweatshirts the fashion craze du jour, but she remembers watching the film for the first time when she was seven. As someone who started her dance training at age three, it made a big impression.

It’s a long way from the Crow reservation in Montana to European art galleries but Kevin Red Star has made the journey. Growing up on the reservation, Red Star showed an aptitude for art that was noticed and with the recommendation of his junior year teacher he was accepted into the newly opened Institute of American Indian Arts.

As he followed his artistic education Red Star studied under various instructors in a number of different schools. It wasn’t long before his paintings began to get a lot of attention and the unique blend of traditional native arts and the modern esthetic made for powerful images.

Authors Daniel Gibson and Kitty Leaken present

a complementary account of Red Star’s rise to one of the most successful Native American artists working today.The paintings speak for themselves and are well displayed throughout the entire book. Brilliant colours leap off the canvas while the subjects often stare silently outwards. Red Star’s portraits vary dramatically in overall appearance but their eyes maintain a consistent presentation of a calmness and wisdom.While we don’t get much insight into Red Star’s technique, we do learn much about his motivation and connection to the Crow people.

straight-man badly in need of conditioner, finds out he’s the father to a 20something girl. Handy, because Harry needs a kidney, and she might just be a match. (Lloyd is horny, and she might just be the one.)

Fire up the Mutt Cutts van and cue the crosscountry road trip. But first the boys have to get through Fraida Felcher (Kathleen Turner), the key to finding Penny (Rachel Melvin), who may or may not be Harry’s daughter. Complicating things are the evil twins played by Rob Riggle, who want the boys dead.

But as with the first

film, plot is irrelevant; it’s all about seeing how many gags and one-liners hit the mark.

Here’s the trouble: Jeff Daniels is a year shy of 60; Carrey is a grandfather in real life.Who wants to watch old guys pour slushies down their pants?

Certainly not teenagers, raised on The Hangover and Jump Street films.This is a film crafted for the nostalgia factor that will appeal solely to fans of the original, who can still be heard quoting Dumb and Dumber at office parties from time to time.

If fans don’t mind a carbon copy, the first two-thirds of the film is adequate. For my money, the best part is when Rob

Riggle emerges from being camouflaged against a vending machine. The worst part is when Harry and Lloyd finally meet Penny: the payoff isn’t that great, the character isn’t particularly funny and Melvin (a Days of Our Lives veteran) seems out of her depth.

The chemistry between Daniels and Carrey still works, even when the gags don’t, and both actors prove that they’re not too old for the slapstick physicality the film demands. But the Farrelly brothers just can’t capture the earnest, low-brow novelty of the first film, no matter how hard Carrey mugs for the camera.

When asked why this was a story Sender Films felt compelled to tell, Rosen explains he and his collaborators’ objective is to tell stories about the world of climbing in as compelling and broad a manner as possible.

“The history of Yosemite climbing is really the story, the origin story, of American climbing . . . and has played a huge role in the origins of world climbing,” he says. “We knew that this 50-, 60year period of Yosemite climbing history was just jam-packed with amazing characters and stories and capers and rivalries and legendary lore — climbing lore — as well as really the birthplace of the culture of American climbing, which is something distinct and counter-culture to the

norm and something that’s had a broad influence even beyond the sport of climbing.”

Tackling that history was “a no-brainer,” says Rosen, the challenge being how to fit all of it into one coherent film.

“That was really the biggest challenge and why it took so many years to do this. I’m glad we took so long because it allowed us to really make the film that we wanted to but it was challenging just from a storytelling and structural perspective,” he says.

Sender Films has been plugging away at the film for the last seven years, seeing them focus on it more closely in the last year or so.

Filmmakers conducted a major archival search, global in reach, searching high and low for imagery to help them tell the story. As little film footage from the early days exists, they relied heavily on photography.

“There were a couple great sources of film footage, which is kind of

perspective, but there wasn’t a lot of that. I think climbers were a little too poor to afford 16mm film cameras back then,” says Rosen.

Filmmakers drew upon a trove of discovered and undiscovered photographs ranging from iconic images, like one depicting three men, Billy Westbay, Jim Bridwell and John Long, in what Rosen describes as “psychedelic Jimi Hendrix shirts” posing in front of El Capitan after the first one-day ascent of the Nose in 1975 used on the film’s poster, to thousands of previously undiscovered pictures. For some of those, they drew upon the work of photographer Glen Denny and his book, Yosemite in the Sixties, and his untapped archive of negatives.

However just getting their hands on the photographs wasn’t enough.

“Climbing is this sensual, dynamic experience, as would be just being in the valley, and partying in Camp 4 back in the day,” says Rosen. “We really knew that we wanted this to be a film that moved to a rock ‘n’ roll pace and we didn’t want it to be this traditional slow documentary with still photographs.”

Fortunately they had a great partner on the project to help them bring their

vision to life, visual effects artist Barry Thompson, who contributed motion graphics to the film.

“He is really a true artist,” says Rosen.

“He really breathed life into these photographs and made the experience cinematic. At least, artistically, that’s the real distinguishing characteristic of this film,” he adds.

Filmmakers rounded out their storytelling with interviews with many of the climbing legends from across the eras. They interviewed approximately 40 people for the film, including: Royal Robbins, Yvon Chouinard, Tom Frost and Steve Roper from the ’60s; Jim Bridwell, Lynn Hill and John Long from the ’70s; and a number of the cutting edge

climbers of today.

Valley Uprising, narrated by actor Peter Sarsgaard, has been garnering positive responses from audiences — good news for the filmmakers.

“The real ambition we had with this film was that it would communicate to as broad an audience as possible,” says Rosen.

The film has also been earning accolades within the industry, including being awarded the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, held Nov. 1-9.

“Banff is kind of the 800-pound gorilla of the mountain film festivals, so to win the grand prize there is pretty great recognition,” says Rosen.

worked on the music during her spare time, which was mainly limited to her commute.

Composing while driving turned out to be quite effective, she reports.

“I think when you’re engaged in another task you access a different part of your brain, maybe a more intuitive part of your brain.”

Upon arriving at her destination,Witvoet would hop off the scooter and pull out her iPhone to dictate a rhythm or a melody.

Asked if her driving was OK during that stretch,Witvoet replies: “No complaints.”

The genesis for the production’s music stemmed from a question posed by director Stuart Aikins:What is the vernacular music of Vancouver?

After a little meditation,Witvoet says she realized there was no single musical style that represented Vancouver’s cultural patchwork.

Accordingly her soundtrack draws inspiration

from the Bollywood-style show tunes she hears on car radios as well as blues, reggae, and one song inspired by aYouTube craze.

The play’s rhythmic work song started out as a chain gang tune featuring the vocal call and response often used in gospel and soul music.

But as Witvoet searched for the rhythm of the factory, she recalled the crisp rhythms of cup songs, an online trend in which young musicians use plastic cups as percussion.

While the play’s musical styles are influenced by the city, the emotion of each song is rooted in the psychology of the play’s characters.

In one scene, the play’s protagonist, Shen Te, watches as her lover seems to hold each one of her ideals in his hands.

“He basically smashes them to the ground,” Witvoet says.

A rock ballad seemed appropriate for that moment, the composer explains.

“It really becomes quite a violent rock number by the end.”

After writing the play’s music Witvoet needed to hear how her songs sounded in the voices of the actors.

The play features students who are “in some cases learning what it is to sing at the same time as they’re learning the song,”Witvoet explains.

After getting the music to the singers,Witvoet would make last-minute changes, sometimes building a song around a particular singer’s voice.

Witvoet’s last task was to create tracks for each of her songs.

“There was not a budget to hire live musicians which I would’ve loved to have done.”

Track by track and instrument by instrument, Witvoet used her keyboard and a music production computer program to build the songs.

“That’s the reality these days,”Witvoet says.

“Most of the working composers in Vancouver who are doing film scores and television scores are a team of one or two with a big Midi setup and they do it all electronically.”

“I loved it. I was obsessed with it completely growing up,” she says.

The stage musical adaptation premiered in the U.K. in 2008 and this current tour is scheduled to run until spring 2015.

Dinardo says the show follows the movie very closely.

“The storyline is exactly the same. It’s just in the musical the writer,Tom Hedley, has been able to go back and flesh out some of the other characters more in depth to give the show more heart, so I think that would be the biggest difference,” she says.

In addition to the five familiar hits from the movie soundtrack — including “What a Feeling” and “Maniac” — the musical also includes 16 new songs.

Many of the iconic scenes from the movie have also been left intact. Like when Alex effortlessly takes off her bra without removing her trend-setting sweatshirt (a manoeuvre that took some practice to master, Dinardo says), or the chair dance solo that sees Alex showered with gallons of water.

“That’s definitely one of my favourite moments, and the most fun as well,” Dinardo says. “They try to keep (the water) a good temperature for me, which is really lovely.”

The musical features a book by Robert Cary and Tom Hedley (who co-wrote the original screenplay with Joe Eszterhas). During rehearsals, Dinardo says Hedley worked with the cast and revealed that Flashdance was actually written with the intention that it be a stage production.

“When we found that out, that made a lot of sense. I think that’s what makes it so easily adaptable to the stage.”

The show is a challenging one “emotionally, physically, vocally,” Dinardo says, but she hopes the nightly demands of her role translate into an exciting theatre experience.

“The audiences will come and they will see a show full of dancing, full of movement, full of energy,” she says. “It does the movie so much justice and more.”

GTI’s light steering takes away some of the fun From page 50 horsepower and gives the Golf GTI a sporty attitude that is surprisingly refined and smooth. The only disappointment with the new GTI is its light steering — it just doesn’t provide sufficient road feel and makes this model feel a bit too “normal” in comparison to its predecessor.

All Golf models benefit from VW’s Cross Differential System (XDS). Previously only available on the GTI, this system monitors the suspension load and will brake the inside wheel to relieve understeer.

Environment The 2015 Golf’s interior boasts high-grade materials and a level of fit and finish

that looks like it came from Audi (which isn’t surprising considering that VW and Audi share many suppliers to provide the interior trims).The cabin is very accommodating and offers ample passenger space.

Thanks to its innovative MQB Platform, the new Golf offers more shoulder room in both rows. Rear seat legroom has also been increased.

VW has raised the level of quality, and the result is the Golf is incredibly comfortable to travel in.

The suspension is nice and supple, allowing it to glide over bumps, and the soundproofing makes the cabin serenely quiet.

The Golf comes with a massive standard features list. All trim levels feature a

5.8-inch colour touchscreen, Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, and satellite radio.

Cargo volume below the parcel shelf is measured at 17.4 cubic feet and 23.7 cubic feet up to the ceiling.

Max capacity is 53.7 cubic feet and loading is made easier by the flat floor.

The only thing marring the otherwise great quality in my tester was an unnecessarily loud clicking noise that could be heard

every time the car was shifted into reverse.

So what happens next?

Do these two meet at an intersection with the crunch of metal and a lesson learned? Do they both get clipped by the RCMP and receive tickets, suspensions, and points on their licences? Do they each, individually, miss a darkly dressed pedestrian and kill someone tonight?

Which one is the worst driver?

Statistically speaking, who gives a flying . . . um . . . care? Both these fictional

smoothed over in just a few minutes of conversation.

However, there are emails to send, and then a few more to-dos on her regular list, and suddenly she’s half an hour late to pick up her 12-year-old daughter from piano lessons.

“I’m coming!” she mutters, reaches into the purse and grabs the phone.

road”: it’s the same thing, and it needs to stop.

Drinking and driving is, of course, already something we all know is wrong. If you are convicted of it, you will be pilloried in the court of public opinion. If Tim struck a pedestrian on his way back from the pub, he might lose his job, face heavy fines and prison time, maybe lose a friend or two.

If Mary also hit someone, well that’s different, right? A moment’s inattention — it could happen to anyone.

No. In fact there are any amount of statistics out there to show that distracted driving is actually more dangerous than drinking and driving.

In the latter, your reflexes are slowed, vision skewed, and you make dumb decisions. In the former, you’re looking at your lap as your two-ton machine barrels down the road, essentially driverless.

Modern cars are designed to be smooth and quiet at speed, eliminating the sensation of velocity in exchange for a secure feeling of confidence. Half of me feels like driving fatalities would go down if everyone was forced to drive in open-framed machines coated in spikes.

You’d never go above 30.

But in your metal box, travelling at the speed limit, you don’t feel like you’re going all that fast.

The phone pings and you palm it low, taking a quick glance. Let’s say you don’t respond, just read it. Grab, swipe, passcode, look. Five seconds maybe.

Fifty kilometres per hour is 13.9 metres per second. In five seconds, you travel nearly 70 metres.

Seventy. That’s near enough a city block, and more than enough to be coming up on a stale green light and have someone step off the curb, perhaps engrossed in their own private electronic world.

I know, I know: pedestrians in Vancouver operate with all the personal awareness of lemmings wearing welding goggles. It doesn’t matter.

You’re driving the thing that can kill them, so it’s up to you to pay attention.

So, how do we solve the distracted driving problem?

There are a few schools of thought here.

The first is enforcement.

We’ve seen both the

RCMP and the local police conducting more cellphone checks, even resorting to posing as panhandlers at crosswalks to catch people out. This seems unfair, especially as sneaking a quick look when you’re stopped at a red light doesn’t seem all that unsafe, but the rules are the rules. As with drinking and driving, there’s no grey area here — if you’re behind the wheel of your car, on the road, you leave the phone alone.

The next idea is that somehow the technology that tempts will end up saving us. Cars are fitted with speech-totext functions, integrated hands-free, and other ways to help keep our eyes on the road. Trouble is, studies show that most of this stuff is equally distracting, taking away from concentrating on the task at hand.

Ah, but what of the semi-autonomous car, fitted with self-braking and pedestrian detection? Fine, but the bugs are still being worked out, and neither our fictional Mary or Tim have machines new enough to have the technology.

In my opinion, distracted driving is never going to cease being a problem until it is treated with the same societal scorn as drinking and driving. Tim’s buddy says, “Another one? Dude, you gotta drive — get a Coke or something.” Mary’s daughter says, “Mom, you texted me while driving?

What’s wrong with you?”

That’s the question we should be asking any time we see someone sneaking a text or a chat on their cell — what is wrong with you? Knock it off, it’s God damn dangerous.

“Yeah, but. . . .”

Yeah but nothing. No excuses. Leave the phone in the footwell or shut it in the glovebox if you can’t resist. It’s not just a ticket you’re risking, it’s someone’s kid, father, grandmother and a lifetime of regret.
