elcome to the latest issue of One Magazine. It fills me with immense pride to reflect on our recent Norse Group Excellence Awards night, where I had the honour of welcoming fellow Norse colleagues from every corner of the UK. Events like the Excellence Awards remind us of our incredible talent as an organisation and the undeniable strength we harness when we come together as ‘One Norse’. It’s in these collective moments that our ethos truly shines.

As you read this issue, you’ll notice a taster of our new-look brand - a nod to our evolving journey and our renewed commitment to excellence.

This brand refresh isn’t just aesthetic; it symbolises our unity and the vibrant future ahead, embodying our spirit of becoming one Group.

The theme of this edition is ESG, and it isn’t just a corporate catchphrase for us.

It’s a profound commitment to driving meaningful change in Environmental, Social, and Governance practices.

This issue also includes insightful articles and features that inform and inspire. They’re a testament to our depth of knowledge and the importance we place on staying informed.

This journey of ours is a shared one.

Every stride we take, every milestone we achieve, it’s done together, as ‘One Norse’. Here’s to us and to the many chapters yet to be written. It’s a pivotal time for Norse and an exciting time ahead for us all.

In our last issue, we introduced ESG and its significance at Norse. Now, we delve deeper with Richard Bettle, our Group Sustainability Manager, unravelling the essentials of ESG and its impact on our future.

Hi Richard, thanks for talking to us. For those new to the term, please briefly explain what ESG stands for and why it’s essential for Norse Group’s future strategy.

RICHARD BETTLE:

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. In simpler terms, it’s about looking at how Norse Group impacts the world around us and making sure we’re doing things the right way. ESG helps us measure how well we care for the environment, support and respect our communities, and run our business responsibly.

With our focus on improving people’s lives, the Norse Group’s approach to ESG means we are committed to being accountable. We’re putting robust plans and actions in place to manage our impact on the local areas where we work. This is about making sure that our activities help, not harm, the communities and environments we’re a part of.

CREATING MOMENTUM TO ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO OPT INTO THE FUTURE WE STRIVE TO DEVELOP.

At Norse, we offer various services and understand that what we do significantly affects the environment and local communities. Keeping our local areas thriving and healthy is vital to our ESG strategy. We’re working on making changes across our organisation, improving how we do things, and introducing new ideas that meet environmental and social needs.So, ESG at Norse Group is all about ensuring the work we do every day is good for our environment, supports our communities, and is done fairly and responsibly.

OM:

Could you tell us about some specific ESG goals Norse Group has set for the upcoming years and how they’ll impact our dayto-day operations?

Norse Group is committed to being Net-Zero by 2050.

Achieving this goal will require monitoring our carbon footprint and implementing carbon reduction initiatives across the Group.

living crisis. And we have the annual ‘Big Tidy Up’, which sees employees volunteering in litter picking exercises nationwide to help tackle the global waste problem. The last event held back in September saw 206 bags of litter collected and disposed of by our fantastic team of volunteers.

OM:

Why is it vital for our communities and the wider society that Norse Group prioritises ESG?

RB:

We are already implementing these initiatives through changes in our fleets, such as using the latest euro-engine vehicles and increasing the use of electric vehicles. Our sustainable procurement policy promotes using environmentally friendly products across our business units. We are monitoring energy consumption across our buildings to identify areas of significant energy usage to implement energy reduction initiatives which promote positive climate change impact. Norse also manages Norfolk’s largest reuse shop. It operates 20 recycling centres on behalf of Norfolk County Council, promoting a recycling culture within our local communities.

Regarding social impact, Norse Group has partnered with the Norfolk Community Foundation to establish a food distribution warehouse based at its Headquarters in Norwich. The Group also maintains two local food hubs, which provide food to the local community and support people impacted by the cost-of-

ESG impacts every part of our community, from the food served to children in Norfolk Schools to how the waste is treated, and the types of cleaning chemicals used for cleaning. The consequences of Norse’s decisions will have long-term impacts on the health and wellbeing of our society now and future generations.

The services that Norse delivers put us in a unique position to improve our communities. For example, whilst flexible working hours can aid recruitment and retention, those policies allow for the care of young and old relatives.

This will impact both the development of children and the costs to the whole society of caring for older people.

Making decisions that consider these impacts will ensure our communities and their environments can thrive over the long term and be sustainable.

OM:

Looking ahead, how will ESG evolve within Norse Group, and what can our teams anticipate in terms of upcoming initiatives or shifts in focus?

pathway to Net Zero. Gas heating and small fleet vehicles (cars and vans) will likely be the first to change to allow the technology to deliver costeffective solutions to be developed for harder-to-treat areas such as HGVs and road repairs.

Away from Net Zero, it is likely that bids for new contracts will need to include a commitment to adding social value to the communities they will be working in. We are working to e s t a b l i s h a re co g n i s e d methodology for calculating this that will allow business units to select appropriate initiatives for the communities they will be working in.

OM:

How can employees across Norse Group contribute to our ESG objectives, and are there any immediate steps they can take in their roles?

RB:

Increasingly, our clients ask how Norse demonstrates its commitment to ESG by improving their local communities. It is becoming a requirement to bid for new work to demonstrate these actions. These policies and measures in place are necessary for potential clients to enter into contracts with us.

While ESG covers almost every aspect of how Norse undertakes its business, the area of ESG that is likely to have the biggest impact on operations in the immediate future is how we move away from using fossil fuels in our operations.

We have committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050, but this is not something we can start in 2045. As a group, we will set a series of 5-year targets to ensure the business continues to progress over the next 25 years. To reflect the varied nature of our activities, each business unit will follow its own

Employees can contribute to Norse Group’s ESG objectives by supporting our green initiatives. Simple behavioural changes such as switching off lights and office equipment when not in use would help our ESG drive. The Group also support several local charities and welcomes active volunteering by employees.

So, where does this fuzz-funded money go? Your generously donated pennies and pounds are funnelled into ground-breaking p ro j e c t s w o r ld w i d e . Th e Movember Foundation, having funded over 1,250 men’s health initiatives globally, ensures every donation supports tangible change. This includes medical research, early cancer detection strategies, and mental health support programmes.

For participants, every itch and scratch of their newfound facial companion reminds them of the more significant cause they’re supporting. And for the rest of us?

We’re continually reminded to encourage the men in our lives to be proactive about their health.

Behind every comical curl or bushy bristle is a story of someone who chose to stand up (or grow out!) for a cause bigger than themselves.

Although it’s fun to joke about the quirky quiffs sprouting on faces, the essence of Movember is profoundly serious. It’s a month where we unite in our fight against the health issues that disproportionately affect men, where every moustache is not just a fashion statement but a flag of hope.

Whether you’re growing, donating, or simply appreciating from the sidelines this November, remember: every ‘stache has a story. What’s yours?

Movember: More Than Just ‘Moustachery’ November, for many, heralds the start of frosty mornings, early sunsets, and the approach of festive cheer. But over the years, the rise of a global movement that champions an important cause: Movember. At its core, Movember is all about men’s health.

There is no right Mo. It’s all personal preference.

But here are just a few of our faves!

Let’s dive in whiskers-first with three intriguing facts you probably didn’t know: The Birth of ‘Movember’: The movement began in 2003 in Australia when two mates decided to bring back the moustache trend.

Fast forward nearly two decades and Movember has become a global initiative inspiring millions.

Moustache Facts: Historically, in some cultures, moustaches were a sign of prestige and wisdom.

In fact, there was a time when a man could be taxed for not having one!

The Moustache Record: According to the Guinness World Records, the world’s longest moustache stretches an astounding 14 feet.

Now that’s a lot of facial hair commitment!

Now, while these facts may tickle your upper lip (pun very much intended), the crux of Movember is far from light-hearted. Men around the globe sport their Mo’s to raise awareness about critical men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

The rollout of our Engage employee app and the new candidate screening programme launched in August are just the beginning of our Project One journey. There’s more HR transformation to come in 2024, plus the start of our Finance transformation.

GREAT REASONS TO JOIN ENGAGE Since the launch of our employee app, Engage, in June more than 4000 colleagues can now connect with everyone across Norse through the social feed and via the Communities which are being set up across our different locations. It (new screening process) will help relationships with clients as we can fully staff sites more swiftly, which will then free up our mobile staff, so fingers crossed it’s going to help improve our service offering across the whole piece.

If candidates lack confidence with online applications, or don’t have access to a screen, we can invite them into the office and sit by their side when they complete the screening application.

NEW HR KNOWLEDGE BASE & CASE MANAGEMENT Our new HR Knowledge Base going live in the first half of 2024 will make it much easier for you to find HR information on a wide range of topics, or you can raise a question if you need further support.

EXCITING CHANGES FOR FINANCE IN 2024 In 2024 we are going live with Microsoft Dynamics 365!

D365 will replace the existing finance systems across Norse and enable the group to move away from manual, repetitive and sometimes paper-based processes, all of which make it difficult to access information in a reliable and timely way.

With the implementation of D365 we’ll have a single source of accurate data and information. It will provide the business insights we need for making informed decisions and free up valuable time for finance and operational teams. This time can then be better spent on value-added activities and allow us to truly operate as ‘One Norse’.

Teams are already engaged in implementation activities; this engagement will be extended across Norse within the coming months so that the huge benefits of D365 are understood and maximised.

This change programme will transform Norse, which is why it is such an exciting programme and a key element in bringing Norse together.

A new initiative formed from a partnership between Medway Council, Medway Norse, and Gillingham Street Angels has increased Household Waste and Recycling Centre diversion and the reuse of furniture, bric-a-brac and electricals by 1000%.

Medway Norse, a joint venture partnership between Norse Group and Medway Council, manage 3 Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC) on behalf of Medway Council, serving approximately 119K households.

Medway Norse and Medway Council are committed to waste minimisation, prevention, and sustainable waste management.

When looking for solutions to reduce the number of reusable items entering waste streams, the idea of a reuse shop arose, having seen success at other HWRCs, including the Norse Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) Norwich North site.

However, Medway Norse and Medway Council found that the 3

HWRCs in Medway were not large enough to accommodate a reuse shop on site. As an alternative, the partnership sought to find a local charitable organisation that could sell products on their behalf, with all proceeds going to a valued cause. Gillingham Street Angels, a community-focused charity that supports Medway’s most vulnerable residents, met these criteria.

Gillingham Street Angels was formed in 2018 to support those experiencing homelessness.

5 years on, the charity works with a broader range of individuals and families who require support, delivering a number of schemes, including a charity shop, a food bank, a free school uniform bank, a community allotment, an upskilling and reskilling programme called ‘Angels in Sheds’ and a PAT testing and repair service that restores electrical items for resale.

In the first five months of the contract, Medway’s HWRC reuse tonnages are over twenty times greater than during the same period last year, with over 21 tonnes of reuse diverted from waste streams between January and May 2023. By the end of 2023, it is estimated that we will have diverted 52 tonnes of reusable items from waste streams compared to less than 5 tonnes in 2022.

The Medway HWRC Reuse Project is not only positive because of its environmental benefits; the money raised through the resale of donated items will be reinvested into Gillingham Street Angels, benefitting local communities in need.

As a result of the successful initiative, The Medway HWRC Reuse Project were shortlisted for the LARAC Best Waste Minimisation or Prevention Project Award.

Donna’s philanthropic efforts extend globally, as she has been supporting a school in Ghana, collecting essential items, and establishing ‘Donna’s Farm’ to promote self-sufficiency in the community. Donna’s unwavering dedication to communities, is truly exceptional.

Coaching and Mentoring Award Winner: Barnsley Norse Nominated by Rachel Booth, the Barnsley Norse team was awarded the Coaching and Mentoring Award for their exceptional dedication to the Barnsley Council’s Supported Employment scheme. Over the past two years, they have helped 10 individuals with learning barriers or additional support needs secure permanent employment. Through expert coaching and guidance, they’ve transformed these individuals into some of the company’s top performers. Their proactive approach in working with local councils to expand such opportunities showcases Norse’s mission to improve lives and embodies our values.

Self-Development Award 4 Winner: Yusuf Ali Yusuf Ali, winner of the SelfDevelopment Award, joined through a kickstart scheme in 2021 with limited English proficiency. However, his commitment has shone through.

He’s improved his English and math skills at college, exceeding expectations. Yusuf consistently displays a strong willingness to learn, solve problems, and use his initiative. He’s a reliable, hardworking colleague who now handles plumbing tasks independently, proving himself an invaluable asset to the team. We are immensely proud to have Yusuf as part of Norse Group.

Inspiring Leadership Award Winner: Jen Pochin Nominated by her fellow NorseCare colleagues, Jen Pochin, NorseCare Manager, embodies inspiring leadership at St Edmunds House.

Her Inspiring Leadership Award nomination reflects her dedication to residents and team welfare. Jen, a remarkable listener and mentor, fosters open communication and innovative problem-solving.

Beyond her managerial role, Jen consistently goes the extra mile to ensure her team’s success. She supports career advancement, offering diploma options and educational opportunities. Jen’s a true asset to St Edmunds House, truly deserving of the Inspiring Leadership Award.

Team Impact Award 6 Winner: Southwest Norse FM Team Nominated by team manager Dominika Buczek, Ian Macfarlane, Brian Moore, Sam Eliot, Clare Dumbleton, and Wayne Jones from Southwest Norse embody an extraordinary team spirit that shines in their dedication to managing 25 Devon County Council buildings. Despite their small size, they rose to the occasion during a flood crisis at Great Moor House, evacuating people swiftly and safeguarding vital ICT equipment. Their positivity, humour, and genuine care for colleagues, clients, and their work environment make them a remarkable team, richly deserving the Team Impact Award.

Going Above and Beyond Award Winner: Emily Loftin Emily Loftin, of Hamson Barron Smith (HBS), epitomizes the Going Above and Beyond Award. Her journey at HBS commenced during the pandemic’s onset, a year filled with remote work and virtual interactions.

Despite these challenges, Emily’s commitment and resourcefulness have consistently shone.

Emily willingly tackles additional tasks, shines in training roles, and provides essential support to colleagues. Her proactive problemsolving, leadership in process improvement, and compassionate support during challenging times showcase her unwavering commitment to excellence. Emily’s stellar communication skills make her an asset to various initiatives.

Improving People’s Lives Award 8 Winner: Phoenix Rivers Phoenix Rivers is an indispensable asset to Oakwood Nursing Home, securing the Improving People’s Lives Award. Phoenix actively engages in garden-themed activities, fostering a sense of community by assisting residents with bird boxes, seeds, and gardening. He crafts non-alcoholic herbal drinks for residents and maintains the garden impeccably, earning praise from residents and visitors.

Phoenix’s approachability, positivity, and commitment make him truly exceptional.

He is truly deserving of this award, consistently going above and beyond to not only enhance, but to improve people’s lives.

Lifetime Achievement Award Winner: Sue Lilley Sue Lilley, the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, is a true Norse Group veteran with a remarkable 30-year journey within the organization. Sue’s dedication and willingness to go the extra mile are legendary. Her career began with Norfolk County Council, and she seamlessly transitioned into Norfolk County Services and Norfolk Property Services when the Group emerged. Originally nominated by her colleagues at Sydney House for the Going Above and Beyond Award, and chosen by CEO Justin Galliford from over 300 submissions, Julie’s outstanding efforts actions embody Norse Group’s values, significantly improving lives. She built a close bond with a resident battling dementia and facial cancer, even organizing the resident’s funeral, showing incredible dedication. Julie also escorted a resident to another NorseCare home, exemplifying her commitment to residents’ well-being.

This year’s Norse Group Tidy Up initiative aligned with World CleanUp Day (September 16) and proved the most successful yet. It saw 113 waste warriors collect 150 bags of general waste and 56 bags of recycling across the country, making a massive difference to their local communities.

Teams were formed in Norwich, Havant, Daventry, Newport, Exeter, Barnsley and London. Together, they tidied beaches, nature trails, residential and industrial areas, woodlands, and parks, allowing others to enjoy them litter-free.

Winner: ‘The Meadows Housing with Care’, for involving tenants and family members in their efforts.

Roger Smith, SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) Director, said: “As part of our commitment to sustainable practices and ESG targets, we are delighted to see our Tidy Up initiative return bigger than ever this year. “I want to thank all of our trash-busting teams for volunteering their time and effort to improve their local communities. I look forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better!”

This year, awards were given out for Participation, Environmental Impact and Community Involvement. Congratulations to the winning teams: Participation (Highest number of participants) Award. Winner: ‘Support Services, Fifers’ Lane’, with 45 attendees tidying Cromer, Caister and Great Yarmouth beaches.

Environmental Impact (Highest number of litter bags collected) Award. Winner: ‘Newport Norse’, with 85 bags collected in total from around the Duffryn Community Area.

Community Involvement (Local partnerships for continued clean -up initiatives) Award. Winner: ‘Southwest Norse’ partnered with countryside charity CPRE, which provided litter pickers, bags and high-vis jackets.

CEO Justin Galliford added, “The Tidy Up is an instrumental event highlighting wasted resources and the impact this has on our biodiversity. The initiative is a simple but effective way to highlight the net zero and biodiversity challenges associated with packaging design and littering.

Encouraging our employees to volunteer is an impactful way to show our commitment to the environment and the communities we serve. As an organisation with an ethos to ‘improve people’s lives, we must set a positive example to others.”

Paving the Way to Rehabilitation: Norse Group’s Partnership with Wayland Prison

This commitment extends beyond business operations, reaching deep into the community, as highlighted by our recent partnership with HMP Wayland.

Situated in Norfolk, this Category C men’s prison has become the focal point of our initiative to equip ex-offenders with the skills and opportunities they need to reintegrate successfully into society.

The Highways Academy, under the guidance of Operations Director for Highways Jason Glasspoole and his team, has been inaugurated within the prison’s confines. More than just a training hub, it is a beacon of hope. The curriculum is tailored to provide inmates with hands-on knowledge in the Highways, Waste, and Grounds Maintenance sectors. With this training, these individuals are gaining technical expertise and acquiring the selfconfidence essential for a fresh start upon release.

Back in June, our dedicated staff embarked on a remarkable journey, walking an impressive 26.2 miles.

Their mission? To raise funds for the amenities fund at St. Augustine’s Place in Gorleston.

Their extraordinary efforts paid off as they collected £3,500. This contribution has enabled our tenants to create cherished memories and enjoy unforgettable moments. Our

tenants had the pleasure of hosting Fritton Owl Sanctuary, experienced the joy of the Wellbeing Mini Donks, enjoyed the sounds of Splash Dup singers, were treated to an unforgettable Elvis night, and topped things off with a pizza party.

This is a testament to the incredible dedication and commitment of our staff, who go above and beyond to enhance the lives of those we care for.

In a heart-warming display of creativity and generosity, residents at NorseCare’s Westfields Care Home have come together to support the Ukraine Aid Centre through their knitting talents.

The initiative started with a kind donation of children’s knitting kits and has since blossomed into a collaborative effort to create colourful scarves for children in need.

Led by Peggy, the residents knitted squares using the donated wool. Recognising the potential impact their work could have, decided to donate them to the Ukraine Appeal.

Excited about the opportunity to make a difference, the Westfields team reached out to the Dereham Ukraine Aid Centre, who warmly welcomed the donation.

Westfields Care Home remains committed to fostering an environment that encourages resident engagement, personal fulfilment, and acts of kindness.

These initiatives are a beautiful display of compassion, creativity, and desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

As part of our ongoing ‘One Group’ transformation, we are constantly seeking ways to evolve and build a sustainable future.

As we continue our ‘One Group’ transformation, an exciting development is on the horizon. We’ve successfully acquired our new head office at Amsterdam Place, next to Norwich Airport, following the Board’s approval of the move from 280 Fifers Lane.

This move, including our Care, Commercial, Consulting, and Business Support Services teams, is all about fostering better teamwork, efficiency, and support for our business.

This change is part of our strategic realignment, which also includes the upcoming sale of Iceni Court and returning the main portacabin next to our current office in February 2024.

O u r n e w s p a ce at Amsterdam Place will be open to all colleagues visiting Norwich. We’re gearing up for minor refurbishments and IT upgrades, ensuring the space meets our collective needs. Keep an eye out for future updates as we progress towards our Easter 2024 relocation.

Wellbeing Training Introducing our latest e-learning courses, “Mental Health & Wellbeing Awareness,” designed to foster a culture of support and understanding. Two courses are available; one for staff and another for supervisors and managers.

School children flourish with Norse Catering A huge congratulations to our Catering division, which been awarded for its commitment to helping children and young people feel listened to and part of the decision-making process at the very first Flourish Awards 2023 - a Norfolk Children’s Services initiative to make Norfolk the best place for children and young people to grow up and thrive.

Norse Catering won in the ‘ Un d e rs to o d ’ c ate go r y, following their pledge to consult with school children on what they want to see on school menus, and help empower them to make positive choices about their health.

“Children and young people are at the heart of school meals, so it is vital they are part of our decision making,” said Melanie Hides, Head of Catering. “In the process, they are empowered to make healthy choices, understand nutrition, and lead their happiest and healthiest lives.”

Barnsley Norse is Leading the Way Congratulations to Barnsley Norse for their spectacular achievement in being awarded the South Yorkshire Careers Hub ‘Leading the Way’ Award for creativity and innovation, in partnership with Barnsley Council.

Barnsley Norse participated in the ‘Supported Employment’ scheme, run by the Council, which allows individuals with learning barriers or additional

In November, Interprint hosted its popular photography competition, inviting all Norse Group employees to showcase their talent and have their photos featured in the 2024 Interprint Norse Calendar.

Although the closing date has passed, the response was impressive, mirroring the previous year’s success.

From stunning wintery scenes to vibrant landscapes, the entries demonstrated technical skill and a deep appreciation for the world around us.

The team is now busy looking through all the fantastic entries. They have the unenviable task of whittling down the submissions to the top 12 photos printed in the 2024 calendar.

Interprint will announce their competition’s winner on Friday, 15 December 2023, so keep an eye out on the intranet and engage to see if you’re one of the lucky photographers selected!

Each winner will receive a blown-up, framed copy of their picture and a copy of the calendar.
