We are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine, Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, Luna Paiva, Hernán Cortés and Igor Urdampilleta— all architects, publishers and designers. Along with one of the founders, Oscar Tusquets, this group fosters the same nonconformist spirit BD has had since its beginnings. Our independence as a company fuels our intentions and supports this purpose. We are now expanding our design dialogue to delve into diverse realms of creativity, in design and in everything we do.

BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today.

Since 1972, we have approached the design process through knowledge, proximity and intuition, responding to the future needs of the moment. Each stage of the process works towards consistently creating responsibly sourced products for people, the environment, and our territory. For over 50 years, we have collaborated with an extensive network of manufacturers, industrialists and artisans located less than 100km from our headquarters in Barcelona, Spain.

Our commitment to local manufacturing has a dual purpose: first, to reduce CO2 emissions from transporting materials in the production process; and second, to foster and support local craftsmanship and the industrial ecosystem, thus contributing to the preservation of our cultural heritage and local community. Furthermore, maintaining a close relationship with our suppliers enriches the value chain and traceability of our designs, allowing for greater environmental transparency.

At BD, we believe in responsible production that respects both the environment and the communities we serve. We value this intimate connection and its role in supporting the local ecosystem.

Originally designed in 1987, the Gaulino inevitably caught international attention. Now, an entire family is moulded from this model. It’s no surprise. It is an icon of the modern 20th century. A delectable wooden frame with leather stretched by hand into the contemporary. Inspired by Antonio Gaudi and Carlo Mollino, Tusquets’ seat spreads fluidly across its contoured wooden frame. The slender tapered legs reach out of the chair like a clawed hand. It was his first chair designed in wood. Made from ash and handupholstered in rich leather, the chair has an artisanal and aesthetic intensity while remaining light, practical, and stackable.

GAULINO CHAIR

The Gaulinetta is an evolution of the Gaulino chair. In words of Oscar Tusquets «In homage to Enzo Mari, who called his chair Tonietta, a derivative of Thonet, I’ve called this chair Gaulinetta, after the Gaulino». Inspired by Antonio Gaudi and Carlo Mollino, Tusquets created 'Gaulino' in 1987. It was an industrially hand-crafted chair with a contoured wooden frame, slender tapering legs and smooth rich leather. The artisanal chair became a modern icon of 20th-century design. The Gaulinetta is an adaptation of this design, and was influenced by Enzo Mari and his Tonietta chair. The reduced armrests generate a sleek model for dining in smaller spaces, and can be tucked away following use. By creating a variation of the Thonet chair, Tusquets demonstrates how less can be more.

The Dalilips was created by Salvador Dalí and Oscar Tusquets in 1972. And its sensual presence is constantly striking. Based on Dalí’s painting, The Mae West Room (1936) and the Mae West Lips sofa (1937), the 300 editions of the Dalilips (initially named the ‘Salivasofá’) were made for the Mae West Hall at the Theatre Museum in Figueres. Due to a lack of technology, the sofa was not commercially viable, but on the centenary of Dalí’s birth in 2004, the Dalilips was released in polyethylene, a high-quality material fit for indoor and outdoor settings. It has been industrially produced ever since. The Dalilips is real and surreal. Its shape, colour and lip lines emulate a giant mouth, and the moulded form is plush, comfortable and visually exciting.

Bordering the surreal behind the glass. The Carlinas tables create lines fit for a gallery and set for the table. Cheekily calling to Carlo Mollino’s influence on Oscar Tusquets, these tables were named Carlinas. The smoked glass tabletop exposes the supporting structures. Like Mollino’s nature-informed pieces, the Carlinas have twisting stretchers of wood. They triangulate on the side table and stabilise larger tables with a diagonal crossbar. The supports twist like entwined fingers, and legs come out of the table like bent knees.

It was an industrially hand-crafted chair with a contoured wooden frame, slender tapering legs and smooth rich leather. The artisanal chair became a modern icon of 20th-century design. The table was designed in 2011 as a complement of the chair. The structure sits comfortably in space. It can be used indoors and outdoors, catering to individual requirements while remaining stylish and simple. Very Grcic. The award-winning Konstantin Grcic brought the extruded aluminium from the Hypostila system into a highly functional and distinctive table profile. Originally designed in 2005, his pared-down and simple aesthetic from Table B now includes six leg styles. The profile comes from Hydro’s 95% recycled aluminium. It can reach lengths from one up to five metres and has two widths and three finishes for the top. There is also a cable management kit available with a built-in electricity system that includes a power, data and VGA, and stereo socket. These tables are strong, waterproof and lightweight, and their minimalist appearance is highly balanced and well-designed. They showcase Grcic’s character and passion for saying more with less.

‘Peristylo’ derives from the Greek Peristyle, a structure surrounded by columns. Tusquets created a structure both efficient and sculptural. These columns appear recurrently in Tusquets’ paintings and encase own home. The Peristylo is embedded both in the faraway past and in the designer’s personal history. And they return again in the Peristylo, encasing the horizontal planks and running upwards into Doric capitals. They are referential, and keep the structure slick. The Cornisa was inspired by the 1973 Hialina shelf. It is witty and postmodern (much like Clotet and Tusquets), floating in space while referencing a classic concept: a cornice. The two designers created the shelf in 1970. Its functionality and simplicity maintain its relevance across different settings on an individual and ergonomic level. The Shiva Vase is sculpture and vase. It is a symbol of Ettore Sottsass and an icon. Sottsass designed the Shiva Vase when travelling to Barcelona for love in 1973. He encountered many cultures, religious symbolism, and inspiration on his travels. The smooth, curving body references the Hindu god Shiva, who was often represented by a phallic ‘Lingam’ devotional sculpture. It has a clean symmetry with its bright colour playing across the form with a brilliant glaze. The Shiva vases are ‘small architectures... like little monuments’, creating energy wherever placed.

Josep Maria Jujol (1879/1949) is one of the greatest, yet least known, geniuses of Catalan architecture whose imagination and creativity are astonishing in each and every artistic discipline he embraced. He was an architect, a painter, a sculptor and a graphic artist to name only some of his talents, and he was Gaudí’s closest and keenest collaborator. After the time he spent with his maestro he experimented with all styles until he had established his own creative universe that was far removed from the conventionalism of his day. The Casa de Familia water decanter, designed in 1912 for the orphanage of the same name, is a simple and humble piece that magnificently demonstrates all his artistic ability. BD has faithfully reproduced it from the only image still in existence of the original model, the photo was clevery taken in front of two mirrors which clearly show the sculptural working to the full.

The modular form runs along a zig-zagging spine that can be modelled in unique configurations. Seven squared mirrors can be placed across the spine in different combinations, and one of the mirrors is concave, adding an element of distorted deconstruction. “Intentionally, a part of this spine is left exposed to view in order to give a few clues as to the laws governing its construction.”

Designed by architect Alvaro Siza Vieira in 1972, the Flamingo lamp is part of design history. Its mobility and subtle structure beautifully fit into space with delicate and dynamic functionality.

Alvaro Siza Vieira is one of the most modern and influential Portuguese architects on the international scene. For decades, he has presented a simple, coherent and clear embrace of creativity and contemporary design.

The Flamingo Lamp follows this clarity and is a design reduced to its essentials. The halogen version was introduced in 1985 and continues to produce a balance of space and volume, sitting unimposingly regardless of the environment. Functional as always. Its coherent line and unembellished backbone produce a subtle curve and intimate light. It dispenses with ornaments. It is ungarnished and stripped-back, working coherently within any space.

Inspired by the Catalano benches by Oscar Tusquets and Lluís Clotet, Alfredo Häberli designed the Swiss Benches Collection for BD. The El Poeta Bench has a light, fluid profile and textured body, and it became a bestseller, sitting comfortably in the public and domestic spheres. Since the beginning, The Catalano bench has been left unchanged. It has a lasting quality and an uninterrupted beauty. Antoni Gaudí developed a profile for his Güell Park benches in Barcelona. Lluís Clotet and Oscar Tusquets found that the benches’ ergonomics were unimprovable, so they adapted the design into the Catalano. It has been in our catalogue since 1973, and remains one of our most popular pieces.

Its one-metre length is light with a netted body that is almost translucent. This prevents rainwater collecting and keeps the structure cool in summer. It blends into its surroundings, can be assembled back-to-back, and has different leg options depending on its desired placement. While paying homage to Gaudí, the Catalano bench is effortlessly functional and beautifully dynamic.

Gaudí’s hand is the mould for a collection of metalwork fittings from the early 20th century.

Antoni Gaudí designed metalwork fittings for his various works of architecture. This collection of eight fittings are exact reproductions of pieces originally made for the Casa Milà, Calvet, and Batlló. Gaudí squeezed or pierced clay with his hands and fingers to create an impression of his hand which was then cast in brass with a polished finish. The handles conform to the grip of a human hand, forming a unique and ergonomic shape that appears to breathe in its brass body. The knobs, door handles and a peep-hole include the: Milá Nº1, Batlló Nº2, Milá Nº3, Milá Nº4, Batlló butterfly, Batlló butterfly-knob, Batlló door handle, and the Calvet peep-hole and Calver door handle. The solid brass pieces are engraved with Gaudí’s signature and were reproduced by BD in collaboration with the architect David Ferrer.

It branches upwards with a set of linking crutches bound like bones. Available in pale varnished lime wood or bleached, it has a powerful presence and illuminates behind the folds of its draped beige linen shade.

Furnishing and animating its surroundings, The Cajones Lamp expresses Dalí’s art with a unique, creative simplicity. The design of the Cajones Lamp was drawn by Dalí in 1937 for Jean Michel Frank. The painting featured a young woman nestled among sheep, one of which serves as a nightstand with a drawer in its side. Tusquets and BD reproduced the sheep image into a limited-edition series of taxidermy lambs. Twenty white lambs (and one black lamb) were sourced by Parisian firm Deyrolle, who had worked with Dalí when he was alive. Instead of hooves, bronze is moulded into rococo-style feet. The circular wooden top and drawer opening from the side play between practicality and perception. The table has a beautiful simplicity that balances the body it holds.

The Mettsass is a big, red moment in a room. Ettore Sottsass designed the table with a confident shape and bright colour. It is bold and powerful. It is constantly new. The Italian architect, industrial designer, innovator and artist Ettore Sottsass designed the Mettsass table for BD in 1972, nearly a decade before co-founding the Memphis movement, which shifted modern design forever. He was always one to experiment, and his preoccupation with nonconformity defined the architecture of the Mettsass with flat sheets of steel, a vibrant coat of red, and a cultivation of aesthetics and emotion. The colour and geometry are bold and conspicuous, far from the Bauhaus minimalism of the era. Reissued in 2012 and still in production today, the Mettsass remains functional but has a sensory dimension that is traditionally inaccessible. It works as a table and sits like a giant gem.

Mendini was a radical designer who influenced architecture and design in Italy and on a global scale, bringing colour and exciting forms into buildings such as the Groninger Museum in The Netherlands and the iconic Proust armchair, which blended a baroque form with multicoloured hand-painted pointillist dots.
