STUDENT NATION Your first weeks in Uppsala will be filled with people telling you just how wonderful life as a student is, and what precious memories you will collect along the way. They will tell you that this will be the best time of your life. After a while, you will realize that student life is what you make of it. Some people simply want to finish their education and return to what their lives used to be, this time with a heavier paycheck. Other people engage in associations, committees, nations and all other groups they find. Many people compromise and do both. The point is, if you want your time in Uppsala to be an amazing experience – it will be. At Norrlands nation, we hope that you will find what suits you among all that is offered on the giant smorgasbord that is student life.

Here you can do anything from sing in a choir to take part in our nation radio. You can work full time as a klubbverkare, or take shifts whenever you feel like it. This is The Recce Guide, a special edition of our nation’s magazine, Norrlands Varjehanda. We will show you all the parts of being a member of Norrlands nation. However, this magazine portrays a “normal” semester at Norrlands. Of course, Norrlands regularly adjust activities after advice from the public health authority of Sweden, Folkhälsomyndigheten. Regardless, Norrlands nation is here for you, and has lately organized many digital events. Stay updated through Norrlands Facebook page, or our website. Welcome Recce! Welcome to Uppsala, the university and Norrlands nation. Three things that are vastly different from each other but still belong together. A student’s life begins at the university and continues at the nations, which in turn are held together by the city of Uppsala. It may seem a bit cryptic, but in time you will understand; give it a few months and it will clear. In any case, we are very happy that you have found Norrlands nation, our nation. What, then, is a nation? A nation is a place to meet and socialize in many different forms. You can, among other things, eat, have a coffee, go to a gask, have an AS (after school), or do something cultural such as join an orchestra, spex group, magazine, or choir. If you would rather engage in social activities, you are welcome to explore the many social associations at the nation. If you are looking for an opportunity to become even more engaged in the nation, there is always the opportunity of applying for full time or part time posts, which is very fun and rewarding. That was a quick review of what can be done at the nation, of which you will find more information in this magazine.

Now, we would like to tell you a little about Kontaktutskottet. We are a committee, made up of a chairman and several members. If you have already registered here at Norrlands nation, chances are that we have already met. We were the ones offering sweets and coffee! It is our job to welcome you to the nation, answer any questions you may have about the nation, the recce period and how to get involved in the nation’s activities. THE RECCE DICTIONARY As a new student, it may sometimes be difficult to know what everyone’s talking about. What’s all this about “Landskap” and “sexa”? To make things easier for you new students, we’ve made a little guide for you to use when you’re in a pickle and need to understand!

Släpp A club that is held after a gask. Usually lasts until 02 or 04 am.

Gask A sophisticated sit-down dinner or banquet with food, drinks and nice company. Gasks are arranged by the nation, as well as by the nation’s different associations. In general, the banquet is followed by a släpp.

Free card/KK-kort Apart from salary, this is the other compensation you may get for your work at the nation. The free card lets you enter Hexagon for free and to skip the line. The kk-card grants you the same benefit, but at all nations.

DK If an event starts at ”17dk”, you shall be there between 17:00 and 17:30. Not before nor after; simply 17dk.

Klubbverkare

Kurator

Often called ”the club work” by our international students. These are members who have taken a semester off from their studies to work full time at the nation. They run the different functions and activities of the nation, such as the café, the pub, the club, and the gasks.

The word ”curator” within the nation world is a person who has taken a year off from their studies to run the nation. Norrlands has two curators, the 1Q and 2Q, and they are responsible for different areas of the nation’s business.

Landskap

Inspector

The big meeting for all members of the nation where important decisions are made. It is held three times per semester and is followed by a dinner. All recentiors attend this dinner for free after their first Landskap. All members are entitled to vote and thereby take part in the democratic process of the nation.

As the word suggests, the inspector’s function is to oversee the activities of the nation, and make sure everything is done right. Norrlands nation’s inspector is Cecilia Pahlberg, and she has a long experience of the nation. We also have a proinspector, Maria Forsberg, who helps or replaces the inspector when needed.

Nation Card

Nämnder

The nation card is your ticket to the nations. No card - no entrance, so hold on to it! A valid ID to match your card is also required.

The different committees are chosen by the landskap and work with different areas. For example, we have an estate committee, a communications committee and a scholarship committee.

Utskott Another form of committee, but smaller and with slightly less responsibilities, is what is called “utskott” in Swedish. Examples of utskott are the cultural committee, the library committee, and the information committee.

Recce / Recentior A new student in Uppsala is called a “recce”, short for recentior. You count as a recce during your first year as a student.

Sexa We know what you may think, but do not worry. A sexa is a reward for working a long shift at the nation, for example serving a gask. You get to enjoy a meal and drinks as a thank you.

The Board The board is led by the First Curator, who is also the chairman. The members are chosen at the Landskap and are responsible for the overall running of the nation.

“Gamla” Gamla Salen, or the Old Hall, is the banquet hall on the second floor of the nation’s older part.

04-gask A unique tradition in Uppsala: first a sittning and then släpp until 04 am. Norrlands nation has the biggest 04-gasks in Uppsala, several times a year (Not during the pandemic).

Värdar Värdar are students who work for the klubbverk/ club work and help them with many of their tasks. It can be anything from making sure that Majs café serves lunch and that Orvar is open, to helping out with inventory or taking care of the club’s bar staff and drinks.

Orvar Apparently, it’s really important to call the pub, Orvar’s krog, for “Orvar” and not “Orvar’s”. Try it, and no one will suspect you are a recentior!

Q-expen The curators office! The door is always open and you are welcome to come by if you have any questions to 1Q and 2Q.

The recce reception It’s not always easy to know how to get involved in the nation, and that’s why the Recce reception exists! Here you will get the chance to get to know the various associations within the nation, who do everything from sports to singing. And of course there will also be lots of free candy and other snacks!

Recce Gask Usually, the reccegask is a three course meal at the nation. Here you have the chance to network with other recentiors, but also talk to members who are already active in the nation life. Updates about the spring semester’s reccegask will be posted on the nation’s Facebook page.

Landskap I Recentiors as well as people who have been around for more than a decade are always welcome to attend the landskap. The nation’s biggest elections are held at the landskap, and all the members have the right to vote.

Every Saturday since 1957, Norrlands nation has served Saturday fika which among other things consists of sandwich cake, sandwiches, cookies, chocolate balls and coffee. Open 12.00 – 15.00. Nation card not required.

Wednesday to Saturday you are welcome to visit the nation pub! At Orvars krog you’ll always find burgers, beer and of course many alcohol free options. Nation card required.

The history of Norrlands nation The nation has a long and exciting history, and there are many fun stories that include live horses in Gamla Salen and fires in Inre Läs. Ask someone who’s been here a while and they will surely tell you something exciting. But how did the nation come to be, and why is there one single nation for the whole of Norrland? Norrlands nation was founded in 1827 through a fusion of several smaller nations. The nation has its roots in the middle of the 17th century and originally only included students from Härnösand or Luleå dioceses. When the student nations in Uppsala were created back in the 17th century, the only gymnasium in Norrland, not counting Gävle gymnasium, was located in Härnösand, meaning all students from northern Sweden had studied together in Härnösand.

In 1646 the Ångermanlandian nation was founded. The students from Västerbotten chose to form their own nation, the Westrobothnian nation, in 1647. Parties and other mischief were common at the nations, which lead to the university appointing inspectors for the nations. These were tasked with surveying and controlling what happened at the nations. The inspector was a university professor and also served as a mentor to the nation members. This is a post that still exists at the nations and the current Inspector of our nation is Cecilia Pahlberg, professor in Business Studies. Parties aside, the nations turned out to be beneficial for students, promoting discipline, order, and social competence. This lead to obligatory nation membership in 1667 for students at the university. This obligation was in force from 1667 to 2010.

In the 1800’s, the Ångermanlandian and the Westrobothnian nations fused and created the Bothnian nation. Norrlands Nation was later formed in 1827 when the “Medelpado-Jämtska” nation joined as well. The new, joint nation had 56 members back then (compared to the 8000 members of today).

”Sångarföreningen” eventually changed its name to ”Chorus Virorum” and is still active at the nation. The choir has been joined by three sororities, four fraternities, eight cultural associations and two sports associations. Info about the associations can be found in this magazine as well.

The nation is, in fact, only the members themselves. During the nation’s first years, there was not even a nation house, and the nation was moved from building to building. The current old part of the nation house was finished and ready to be used in 1889. The nation had then been collecting and saving money since 1843. The nation choir of the time, “Sångföreningen”, actually went up to Norrland to sing and collect money. In 1971, the new part of the nation house was built.

Norrlands nation has a long and varied history, and as a new member of the nation, you’re now part of a 190-year-old student nation with roots in 17th century Sweden. And through two world wars, the introduction of general suffrage, the moon landing, and two silvers for Sweden in the World Cup, the nation has resided in its house along the Fyris river. Dear Recentior! A warm welcome to Uppsala and Norrlands nation. As a student at the university and a new member of the nation, you’re in for an exciting time filled with possibilities. During your time here, you’ll meet many who’re interested in the same subjects that you have chosen and you’ll experience how everything becomes so much more interesting and fun as you learn about a specific field of study. Make the most of it, and focus on your studies right from the start! However, besides stimulating studies, you can also develop as a person by making use of everything that the nation has to offer. The nation is a meeting point for students from all parts of the university, making it a place where you can meet and get to know people with complete different interests and knowledge. This diversity is incredibly stimulating and will give you invaluable experiences for the future. The nation also offers a lot of activities. There’s something for everyone: song and music, spex, theater, study places and a library, food and beverages, entertainment and parties, not to mention all the fraternities and sororities.

By being an active member, you will enrich your studies and prepare yourself for your professional life. Not to mention, it’s very fun! Your time is now. By combining your studies and your nation, you will make the most of your time in Uppsala; you’ll develop as a person and broaden your horizon. What you build and acquire here will follow you throughout life. Enjoy it all, and try to find a good balance between education and leisure. This youthful town will now be part of your life for some time, and for many, the nation becomes like a second home. Welcome to Uppsala, to the university and to Norrlands nation.

Accomodation through Norrlands nation Do you know that the nation may provide you with an apartment or a dorm room? Here’s everything you need to know about housing through Norrlands nation.

Finding accommodation in this city isn’t the easiest thing, but the nation may just be your savior. As a member of Norrlands nation, you have the benefit of obtaining accommodation in one of the many apartments that the nation has at its disposal. Each member receives one point each semester, which can be used in the accommodation queue. In addition, members who are active with any type of post within the nation accumulate an extra point for each semester. In other words: the more you engage and the longer you are a member - the more points you will get, as well as a better place in the queue!

The foundation “Norrlandsgårdarna” offers apartments and dorm rooms at Studentvägen and in Observatoriet, close to Ekonomikum. The rent includes an Internet connection and cabel TV, and the rent for the corridor rooms also includes electricity. Both areas are centrally located, and you can easily reach most university institutions by walking or biking. More information about rules for applying and such is available at nationsgardarna.se. It is there you register and apply for available apartments and rooms.

To furnish as a student - The students Emma and Amandas give their best tips 1. Use double-sided tape to hang paintings, to avoid leaving traces. 2. Plants make a room more lively! Exchange plants and cuttings with friends or through Facebook groups. 3. Invest in furniture that can have several functions, for example a secretary can act as both a study surface, a makeup table, and storage.

SCHOLARSHIPS As students, we could all use some extra cash, right? We asked the stipendiesekreterare Anna and Anja to share their best advice on how to apply for scholarships at the nation.

What does a stipendiesekreterare do?

What’s good to know before you apply?

We are part of the stipendienämnd, where we examine all the applications and give suggestions for who should be the holders of the next scholarships. We read all the applications and prepare the committee meetings. Then, the committee reads through our suggestions and give their opinion. The inspector has the final say.

One of the most common mistakes is that applicants forget to fill out the forms correctly. Do take the time to read through the instructions carefully. Another fact that many people don’t acknowledge, is that you can apply for scholarships even during your exchange period abroad. As long as the exchange is arranged through the Division of Internationalisation and you remain a nation member, feel free to apply!

How do you apply for scholarships? Each semester, we announce the available scholarships through the website, Facebook, and with a note on the bulletin board. You hand in your application in physical form, to the registry office (next to Majs café). All application forms can be downloaded and printed through the nation’s website, but are also available in print at the registry. Remember not to begin too late, as you need to attach several documents.

How many scholarships does the nation have? A lot! You may read about each one in the scholarship hand book, available at the website and on the bulletin board. Remember that not all scholarships require that you are born in Norrland or even in Sweden.

Who can apply? First of all, you need to be a member of Norrlands nation. Then, the qualifications may differ between the different grants. For some, you need to be born in a certain place, for others you simply need to be an active student. Almost all scholarshops are founded by individual people, some as far back as in the 19th century!

WORK AT NORRLANDS Working at the nation does not only give you extra cash, it’s also a great way to meet new friends and have fun! Try working a shift and be a part of the community!

At Norrlands, you have the opportunity to work as a bartender or waiter/waitress, cook for events, or make sure that everything runs smoothly at the clubs. It is a good way to get to know new people and be part of the nation’s community. And don’t worry, you don’t need to be able to speak Swedish. There are several benefits of working at the nation. You can choose how much you want to work. Working at the nation also means good merits and work experience that you can add to your resumé.

The club workers of the nation are in charge of hiring personnel. If you are interested in working, contact them and they will tell you more. Join the nation now and come work with us!

What is a gask at Norrlands? Before the pandemic, Norrlands used to arrange several gasks every week. Working at a gask is a great way to explore the student life and the nation house. We tagged along behind the scenes of a gask. Water glasses need to be filled, flower vases put on the tables, and pre-drinks mixed. It is Ellinor Ohlsson’s first time as a head waiter, and she is going through the schedule of the evening with her staff. She draws a wine glass on the whiteboard, and explains:

Rebecca Pettersson has worked many shifts at the nation, and says that the social part is the best part. – You meet people that are active in different parts of the nation. It is a long shift, but a very fun one, and during the breaks there is time to talk and to get to know each other.

–Y ou pour to the widest part of the glass. Some of the waiters that have gathered around her are beginners to working at the nation whilst others are more experienced. Carolina Jonsell is working her second shift as a waiter tonight.

A gask usually ends at ten pm. The waiters then sort the glasses, put the table cloths in the laundry, and sweep the floor so that it is ready for dancing. When the night becomes morning, and the dish washer eventually goes home, another gask ends at Norrlands nation. The next day, everything starts all over again.

– I had no previous experience as a waiter, but I wanted to try something new, and working is the best way to explore the nation. If you work on a gask, you do not only get a salary, but also a free “sexa” – an informal type of dinner. At the sexa you can talk about the evening with your colleagues, eat good food, and sing songs from Norrlands’ song book.

During the pandemic the gasks are digital, so we can continue the festivites online in a safe way. Visit the nations Facebook page to find out when it’s time for the next digital gask!

VOLUNTEER AT THE NATION A volunteer is someone who does something extra for the nation. The posts are many and may include helping set up different events, like dinners or clubs, or arranging book clubs, producing radio shows or writing for the nation’s magazine.

Responsible for the nation’s art and movables. They do regular inventories to check the status of the nation’s belongings and work close to the property board.

The editors are responsible for the nation’s magazine Norrlands Varjehanda, which is published twice per semester. The work includes writing articles, doing layout and meeting lots of new people.

Archivist

Song Leader

The archivist is responsible for taking care of the nation’s archive and makes sure that the nation’s publications are conserved.

The song leader makes sure that there are song books and leaflets at the nation’s gasques and leads the singing at these events.

Marskalk The marskalk help organize dinners at the nation, act as toastmasters and make sure everything goes as planned.

Nation photographer Are you interested in photography? This could be the post for you! The nation photographer is responsible for documenting gasks, the landskap and for editing and publishing the material on Facebook.

Technical director This post includes setting up the technical apparatus before festivities and making sure that the equipment is in good condition. The technical director is the Club manager’s helping hand.

Dagvärdar Help the club worker’s with their daily work, with everything from refilling the bars to carrying stage material for clubs.

THEY VOLUNTEER AS TECHNICAL DIRECTORS You can get involved at Norrlands nation in many different ways, and it is the perfect chance to try something completely new, or to develop your interests on the side of the studies. We met Joel d’Argy and Johan Gunnarsson, who love sound, light and creativity. Since last fall, they work as the nation’s technical directors, even though the road to the nation was not entirely clear.

Johan, who is from Småland and studies theology, slipped into Norrlands nation as a recce during a pub crawl when he realized that he needed a nation card to favour his new life as a student. – Norrlands chose me, he says jokingly. At that moment, he might not have imagined that a few weeks later he would be one of the people who would bring the nation’s dance floor to life, before the club closed because of the pandemic. Joel, who studies to be a nurse, is originally from Skåne but after living in Umeå (in northern Sweden) for a year, he felt that Norrlands nation was the one that appealed to him the most. As he entered the nation, he saw a poster announcing the position of technical director and decided to apply for the post.

The fact that they both ended up as technical directors is perhaps not that coincidental. They both have previous experiences that are perfect for the position. Joel used to work as a stage technician at Helsingborg City Theater and Johan has previously been involved in arranging discos, dj-ing and playing in bands. An ordinary day as a technical director is very varied. Wednesday night before Hexagon begins, or when there is a “släpp” at the nation, preparations begin in the afternoon. The guys set up the stage and arrange the lamps in the dancing areas. During the evening they often sit in the mixing booth which is located opposite the stage. There, they have a good view of the dance floor and can decide which effects fit the moment. - But we don’t just sit there the entire evening, things always happen that need to be solved, such as changing a fuse or helping the club hosts with something, Johan adds. It is hard to miss the burning interest in stage technology that the two of them share. As technical directors, the passion for sound sometimes takes other forms as well. From time to time, Johan and Joel are asked to step in as DJ’s, which they happily do under the pseudonym of “DJ TF”.

COMMITTEES Norrlands has nine committees that are responsible for different parts of the nation’s business. Some of the committees’ representatives are selected at the Landskap, whilst some are selected by the Board. Which committee are you interested in?

The Events Committee

The International Committee

The Events Committee is responsible for coming up with new ideas and concepts that can improve and develop the nation’s recurring events.

The International committee takes care of the nation’s international students. The committee is also responsible for the international grant holders that visit Norrlands at proms and other events.

The Library Committee The committee is responsible for the purchasing and lending of books and magazines. During the semester they also arrange short story book clubs.

The Information Committee Collaborates with the Communications Management to coordinate the nation’s internal and external information.

The Sports Committee The Equality Committee Responsible for the equality work within the nation. The committee educates the nation’s full-time employees and hosts.

Through the nation’s sports association NNIF, the committee arranges weekly sports activities for members of Norrlands nation. Football, floorball, and badminton are among the activities.

The Audit Commitee The Contact Committee The committee helps the nation’s new students with enrollment, arranges receptions, pub crawls and other activities.

The Culture Committee Arranges and promotes the nation’s cultural events. Each semester, the Cultural committee arranges dinners, art tours and exhibitions.

The Audit Committee keeps track of and assists the daily operation on behalf of the Board.

Study at Norrlands The nation building offers several places to sit and study. Do you prefer daylight and a microwave for your lunch? Or would you rather hide out amongst bookshelves and reading lamps? Here are your options.

The Library The nation’s library with its study room is located downstairs, directly below Maj’s café. It offers 30 seats at tables with individual reading lamps. Here, you may loan course books about many different subjects. All students with a nation card are permitted to loan books from all thirteen nations of Uppsala. Your nation card functions as a library card. To find the book you are looking for, search at the nation libraries’ joint website: www.student.uu.se/ nation/kk/bk/argus/.

Brända Tentan och Lindrummet Upstairs from Majs café, “Brända tentan” (approx. “The Burnt Exam”) is located. Big windows offer great lighting and there are microwaves for your lunch. Across the building, upstairs from the registry, is the so-called Lindrummet. Lean back in comfortable armchairs and study with Orvar’s pub and the courtyard as your view.

Datasalen / The computor room

Next to Majs café, on the opposite side of the registry, you will find the computer room. Once named for its desktop computers, it now offers endless charging opportunities for your laptop. With lots of seats, the permission to speak and, thus, do group assignments, as well as the close distance to lunch at Maj’s café, this is a comfortable option.

HANG OUT AT THE NATION

Majs café “Majs” is the café, named after once-upon-a-time café hostess Maj Reinhammar, who came up with the idea for the “lördagsfika” (an extra special “fika” on Saturdays!). At Maj’s, you are more than welcome to hang out with friends (or by yourself) in a cozy and homey environment. Maj’s offers breakfast, lunch and coffee in the afternoons. Saturdays, tables are set up for a buffé of cakes, sandwiches, smoothies and more. This has been a highly appreciated tradition for over 50 years. Thanks, Maj! Orvars krog Want a burger and/or a beer? Welcome to “Orvar”! Norrlands nation’s pub offers a wide assortment of beers and quite incredible pub food. Norrlands nation’s pub is never empty, being a local waterhole for current as well as previous students. Step into the warmth, have a beer, and meet up with friends to chat or play darts. Hours: Wednesday - Thursday: 16.00-22.00 Friday - Saturday: 14.00-22.00

Associations The nation offers a social life within the many social and cultural associations. As a member of a sorority or fraternity you will be able to dive into the glorious life of dinners, game nights, parties and more. The cultural associations are made up of the orchestras Salongsorkesern and Attraktionsorkestern, the dance group Attrapperna, the big band Phontrattarne, the choirs Chorus Virorum, Cantus Feminis and Norrlands nations kammarkör (NNK), and the theatre group NoNSEns. Do you love to sing, dance, act och play an instrument? This is your chance to join a community of like-minded.

Club Hexagon In regular times, the nation has a club. With house music and amazing theme nights, club Hexagon turns the nation into a big dance floor each wednesday night. The club is now closed, but will open again after the pandemic.

Last but not least, the athlete or sports lover will find a place within the sports association NNIF, with its own gym and activities. The gym card is sold only twice a year, so keep an eye on their Facebook page early on in the semester. The hunter or want-to-be-hunter, look here: the newest association NJF is for everyone passionate about hunting or the outdoors. Amongst many things, they arrange education opportunities for hunting licences.

Attraktionsorkestern and Attrapperna is one of the nation’s orchestra and dance associations! We like to play and dance to genres such as pop, soul and big band jazz.

HBF Birkarlarna is an association targeting male students in Uppsala. Though the heart of our organization lies in the counties Norr- and Västerbotten, anyone who feels a connection to the culture, food and mentality prevalent in the northernmost part of our country is welcome to apply for membership. Cantus Feminis is the nation’s women’s choir. We’re a merry group who share a joyful approach to singing. No previous experience or musical knowledge is required – we welcome anyone who’d like to try singing in a choir. If it’s possible to carry out rehearsals during the spring semester we will do that each Thursday while we follow the restrictions without a risk of disease spreading. Otherwise we will have digital meetings where we will learn about choir song from our conductors.

Salongsorkestern is one of the three orchestras at Norrlands nation. We are a symphony orchestra with a repertoire that consists of classical music and music from films and video games. Due to covid-19, our regular rehearsals have been cancelled for a while. We are planning for some Zoom acticivities for the beginning of the spring term.

Ypsilon Dear recce, Ypsilon is the oldest sorority at Norrland’s nation and was established in 1962. All female students are welcome to enjoy our tasty food and warm company!
