COVID-19’s EFFECT ON THE ARTS IN NORMAN Hotel Tax dollars support 25 arts organizations in Norman – because of COVID-19 and a lack of travel and tourism, Norman arts organizations have been impacted particularly hard.

Just since March dozens of community programs have been cancelled – we are at a REAL RISK of some of these not ever returning: Medieval Fair Norman Music Festival 2nd Friday Art Walk Sooner Theatre Summer Camp Firehouse Art Center Spring and Summer classes Tibetan Monks Sand Mandala Native Crossroads Film Festival Festival of Spirituals Summer Opera Camp Summer Breeze Concert Series These arts organizations have lost over $671,000 in revenue from cancelled programs since March It is estimated that we were unable to serve over 257,000 people with due to programs being canceled

Loss of economic impact in Norman: Over $11,000,000 in spending by audience members and almost $1,000,000 in local and state sales tax revenue*

*Based on the most recent Arts & Economic Prosperity Study conducted by Americans for the Arts, in Norman, people attending non-profit arts events spend on average $44.21 in the community beyond the cost of admission to that event.

2nd Friday Norman Art Walk The 2nd Friday Art Walk continues to be one of the most popular arts events in Norman. March, April and May 2nd Fridays were cancelled due to COVID. Norman Arts Council experimented with virtually broadcast art walks beginning in June.

Norman Forward In FYE20, we started two new Norman Forward 1% for art projects: Ruby Grant Park and Andrew’s Park. For Ruby Grant Park, our first female artist was selected for the 1% projects, Valery Theberg of Maryland. Theberg’s interactive, mosaic sculpture will be place in a serene spot in the park and is ideal for meditation and reflection on nature. The work is currently scheduled to be installed and dedication with the opening of the park.

Andrew’s Park is in the RFQ phase as of June 30, 2020.

Public Art is smART Norman Arts Council’s Public Art is SmART program uses Norman’s public art as the catalyst for dynamic educational resources created to encourage educators of every grade level and subject area to enhance their teaching and students’ educational experiences using various, wonderful pieces of accessible works of art.

Public art visually benefits everyone and can positively affect tourism, economic development, and our quality of life. Since it is free to enjoy and is easily accessible to all, it can be a lively springboard for dialogue and education.

The program launched in Spring 2018 as a pilot for the 5th grade classrooms at Truman Elementary, using the piece Horses In Motion by Steven Weitzman (I-35 & Rock Creek Road Bridge) as the basis for learning activities in physics, engineering, social studies, mathematics, language arts, art and more. In the Fall of 2018, the program was officially launched and work began to promote its availability to all 5th grade classrooms in the NPS School System. Additionally, there are now three complete modules available for teachers to access: Horses in Motion, Splash, and Prairie Wind.

Arts Education Arts Program Scholarships: Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 and Hotel Tax Budget Cuts, we were only able to award scholarships in the Fall of 2019.

We made 12 scholarships with a total of $4,000 awarded.

Poole Travel Awards: 2 awards, Beatriz Mayorca and Eric Piper Mayorca used the award to attend an assortment of educational lectures offered at the Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) Fair this fall in Chicago, IL. SOFA combines her personal balance between form and function and interest in melding sculpture and functional artistic-pieces through hands-on demonstrations, lectures, networking with likeminded artists from across the globe and a wellspring of inspiration in the form of new perspectives and techniques.

Piper’s award helped offset some of the costs of a trip to France where he engaged in a number of collaborations and journeys for inspiration. He underwent a collaborative project with old studio-mate Gaetan Larant and Good Morning Toulouse (a local university radio station) to broadcast a series of strange storytelling and soundscape radio dramas in Toulouse, France.

Due to COVID-19, the Travel Awards were cancelled for FYE20 Kids Art is smART: This program, supported by the NAC and facilitated by the Firehouse Art Center, places a full-time arts educator at Lincoln Elementary School and provides art instruction for pre K – 5th grade students to ensure that each student receives an hour of visual arts instruction each week. Due to COVID-19, in FYE20 we had to cut the budget for this program in half and we do not currently have funding for it budgeted in FYE21.
