Arts Advocacy by the NAC The Norman Arts Council works to advocate for the public funding for the arts.

We are in a unique position in Norman to be a leader in this area due to the support of the arts by the City of Norman through the Hotel Tax, Public Arts Board, and the Norman Forward 1% for Art Projects. Because of the strong public support for the arts here, other communities across the Nation look to us as role models.

Activities Included: • Executive Director, Erinn Gavaghan participating in the Americans for the Art Executive Leadership Forum • A delegation of Norman Arts Leaders attending Arts Advocacy Days in Washington D.C. • A delegation of Norman Arts Leaders attending Arts Advocacy Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol • Norman arts city-wide participation in the Americans for the Arts: Arts and Economic Prosperity Study 5

Highlights from the 2016 Study: • Total Annual Arts Industry Expenditures in the City of Norman - $56,174,795 • 1,544 Full-Time Equivalent Jobs are supported by Norman Arts Industry • Norman Arts Industry Annually Generates $4,839,000 in State & Local Government revenue • Audiences at Norman Arts events spend an average of $44.21 per person BEYOND ticket prices (that’s $5 more per person than the average for the State) • Annually, the Arts in Norman have an audience of over 1,000,000 people

2nd Friday Norman Art Walk The 2nd Friday Art Walk continues to be one of the most popular arts events in Norman. Each month, thousands of visitors descend upon Downtown Norman businesses, shops, galleries and studios.

Norman Public Arts Board The City of Norman boasts a public art collection of more than 130 pieces, including works on public, private, and University spaces. The Norman Public Arts Board works to manage, maintain, and create works of public art in Norman.

FYE19 marked the beginning of a public art master planning process for the City that we expect to be completed and presented by the Spring of 2020. In the meantime, the PAB has added to both the ongoing Artist-designed Bike Rack project. (an Americans for the Arts recognized community problem-solving through the arts project) and the Norman Parks Duck project.

Additionally, in the Spring of 2019, the PAB partnered with the City of Norman Stormwater Division to create and implement Artful Inlets. This project highlighted the often hidden stormwater infrastructure and educated the public on the harmful effects of pollution on water quality.

Five local artists were selected for designs that transformed city storm drains into works of public art. These artful inlets are intended to educate and raise public awareness of stormwater pollution and are located along Main Street in the Walker Arts District.

Arts Education Arts Program Scholarships: 25 scholarships and $9,000 awarded Poole Travel Awards: 2 awards, Mayumi Kiefer and Solomon Mahlatini Kids Art is smART: This program, supported by the NAC and facilitated by the Firehouse Art Center, places a full-time arts educator at Lincoln Elementary School and provides art instruction for pre K – 5th grade students to ensure that each student receives an hour of visual arts instruction each week. In FYE19 and continuing for the next year, we have been advocating with the Firehouse and the administration at Lincoln for additional support of this program, which faces the possibility of running out of program funding before the end of the coming school year.

Held in September 2018, Arts Education providers set up booths in MAINSITE to explain programming available to teachers and students.

Walker Arts District In the Spring of 2019, we officially dedicated the Walker Arts District in Downtown Norman. The Walker Arts District was established by City Ordinance of February 14, 2017 in remembrance of long-time Norman Arts Council board member, Larry Walker.

Following the adoption of the Ordinance, the NAC opened a call for proposals to design the branding of the district. Local artist JD Reeves was selected. And the branding was launched with a campaign to place Walker Arts District Banners along Main Street – visually establishing to visitors that they have entered the Arts District. A portion of the funds raised from banner sponsorships will be allocated to future enhancements of the Walker Arts District in coordination with the Norman Downtowners Association.
