INTRODUCTION Nottingham News Centre: Overview summary, values and mission Nottingham News Centre (NNC) CIC is a Black British, female-led heritage media production, social enterprise, based in Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands UK since 2013 (see www.nottinghamnewscentre.com).

At the heart of our corporate (and personal) values are education and inclusion: approachable and made achievable, through heritage equality, diversity and heritage education strategy and content for all.

Our mission and motto is to 'collate | inform | grow': by improving heritage educational access, heritage interpretation and community participation within the heritage sector and across the global, multicultural, shared and collective story of humankind.

The significant reduction and seemingly, gradual move towards the eradication of workingclass contributions (i.e whether physically, through workforce reduction or intellectually, through knowledge sharing), within industries such as mining and mineral extraction, lace, cotton and textiles manufacturing, railways and canal building, steel, rope and shipping industries to name but a few, has increased a significant reduction in family income, community cohesion, skills development, regional economic growth and employment opportunities in many working class regions, over many decades and centuries in the UK, Western cultures and beyond.

Nottingham News Centre helps to address this by providing creative and essential jobs and professional skills development for individuals keen to experience opportunities within the UK heritage and media sectors. We offer all people, from across the world, the chance for work experience within these sectors, within our organisation, as well as offering opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, which are essential for future growth of UK/ global enterprise and innovation and the step towards the UK becoming a world class centre for equality diversity inclusion (EDI) services and products, through creative diverse media production and innovative heritage management strategy.

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO, NORMA GREGORY The organisation is led by Norma Jacqueline Gregory (BA, MA ,PGCE see full profile at www.normagregory.com ), an experienced and successful leader in equality diversity and inclusion (EDI) provision and policy, diverse heritage consultancy, heritage project management and media production.

NNC has board members, staff and volunteers, support from major organisations in the UK and overseas as well as input from a variety of freelancers creatives, artists, volunteers and not forgetting the generous, continual support from the wider public. Most of our staff work, live or study in the East Midlands UK and beyond.

Our organisation partners include established and emerging museums, archives and heritage organisations, universities, city councils and private companies in the UK and overseas to the betterment of our shared histories, rich collective narratives from within and beyond diverse communities,

DIVERSE HERITAGE MEDIA PRODUCTION Nottingham News Centre frequently works with major broadcasting companies in the UK such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Cardiff Productions and Notts TV and print production companies and educational organisations such as the Runnymead Trust, The Voice newspaper, The Guardian and Historic England. We seek to expand our reach by working with overseas media production organisations to ensure diverse heritage continues to inspire, entertain and inform collaborative practice and multiculturalism history perspectives.

PARTNERSHIPS & COLLABORATIONS Working collaboratively is a great way to make progress, share learning, knowledge and skills.

Our organisation is an active participant in supporting the direction and journey ahead for the UK and cultural heritage sector, within Nottinghamshire, Midlands UK area and beyond.

We have been working closely with the Department of International Trade (DIT) UK, the East Midlands Business Hub, B Global Business Network (N2D2), the Heritage Lottery Fund and other major UK organisations and educational institutions, supporting business growth in the region, in relation to EDI, heritage and media content production.

Nottingham News Centre’s previous clients include: the Anaesthesia Museum, London, Tuntum Housing Association Nottingham, Migration Network UK, The Newcastle Mining Institute (The Common Room Newcastle), Nottingham City Council, Durham University, University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, The Creative Quarter Company Nottingham, Communities Inc. DIVERSE HERITAGE PRESERVATION: A CASE STUDY

BLACK MINERS MUSEUM

The Black Miners Museum (BMM) is currently a non-accredited museum and is foundered and led by Norma Gregory as director of Nottingham News Centre (NNC) since 2013.

NNC/BMM is of local, national and international importance as it holds a unique collection of diverse cultural heritage content preserving the memories, voices, social/industrial artefacts and cultural artistry of former deceased and living individuals who have made a contribution to mining and industrial history, in all its forms.

The museum is steered by volunteers, staff, freelance workers, project partners and stakeholders and has expanded as an project, through many years of community participation and active contribution within and for the heritage sector.

The Black Miners Museum has a crucial role and responsibility in cultural heritage provision for the local and global community, through its community cohesion activities that promote social tolerance, social justice mission, teamwork, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) provision. The museum has a supporting role collaborating with schools, colleges and universities, filling gaps in literacy, heritage studies education and knowledge transfer advancement.

We are experts in diverse project management, promote environmental /climate change awareness and support senior citizens/ young persons in mental health wellbeing around identity and belonging. The Black Miners Museum (BMM) aims to be a cultural heritage ‘agent for change’ through EDI industrial heritage education provision and support climate awareness/ responsibility and good practice within the industrial heritage sector.

Heritage media production and community service through heritage, are central to our current and future work. BMM holds heritage assets as tangible (physical) objects, and intangible resources such as digital products (e.g., 3D content, audio & publishing) and intellectual copyright property. It is publicly accessible (online and by appointment) and its archive include over 500+ rare industrial objects, artefacts, 200+ publications/books, archive and contemporary photo archive (6000+ images), video and media library (500+ video footage), 80 pieces of cultural costumes, a wealth of coal jewellery & sculptures, touring/schools exhibition content, 300+ hours audio recordings and a whole host of EDI heritage education resources. DIVERSE HERITAGE PRESERVATION: OUR MISSION

ADDRESSING HERITAGE MIS-EDUCATION Nottingham News Centre has significantly helped reshape and readdress (mis) representations in industrial workforce history by collating and sharing previously undocumented and forgotten narratives and voices. We help to ensure significant diverse industrial heritage, once at risk, is not lost, deteriorated through neglect or forgotten but preserved, managed, developed further, shared and utilised positively, to make a difference.

By motivating and encouraging people through heritage, especially the younger generation (Gen Z, Millennials etc.) to engage with their shared and diverse histories through various interactive, media production activities, we have reached local, national and global audiences of all ages; supporting sector stability and resilience (view our audience engagement output at https://nottinghamnewscentre.com/profile/ ).

Our important social mission, researching missing chapters of industrial history; aiding a deeper understanding of social constructs and concepts such as teamwork, camaraderie, effective communication, resilience, strength (physical and mental) and efficiency/time management, has helped many people address gaps in education and skills, developing personal resilience whilst helping promote equality and inclusion; inspiring the younger generation to participate in shaping their world and their environment, in which we all have a duty of care.

OUR EDI SERVICES & PRODUCTS NOTTINGHAM NEWS CENTRE (NNC) provides a variety of services and products to support education around diverse heritage. Through equality diversity and inclusion (EDI) education and services, NNC supports pathways to progress for diverse communities and the wider public. Products and services that are accessible, both physically and digitally through: physical and digital visits, talks, loans objects to schools/ community groups. Support academic researchers/ scholars by offering leads and visits by appointment to support learning. PANDEMIC RESILIENCE

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nottingham News Centre (NNC) managed our services, products and raised additional income through essential partnership work with other organisations such as museums, universities, heritage related institutions and societies.

The challenges we experienced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, affected operational output, decelerating income generation through larger organisations ‘tightening their purse strings’ (i.e., poor revenue income through cancellation of events and B2B services) and through significant and sudden national/global change/adaptation measures announced in the media.

Through EDI consultancy services, speaker engagement fees, workshops, training events, online exhibition access, e-publication sales and donations, we demonstrated resilience and determination to remain open and ready to serve, within and beyond the global and digital heritage education and media sectors.

The global COVID-19 pandemic closures temporarily limited our ability to generate regular income through the cancellation of our touring exhibitions, planned workshops, trips, physical visits and activities. In addition to this, NNC had a reduction in staff hours to cover operational costs and increasing overheads, the upkeep of digital services/ subscriptions/memberships and other essential, diverse heritage management requirements. We would not have been unable to transition, strengthen and to fully reopen without new commissions, donations, contracts and grant support to rehire staff; to implement necessary health and safety standards for the public staff and volunteers, provide necessary training to effectively manage change and support our journey ahead.

Strengthening financial resilience and 'building back better' with inclusion and diversity at the heat of this global restructuring, despite challenging times worked well for NNC. New/ Alternative market opportunities for our services and products by working in partnership with new and existing local, national and international partners organisations, has enabled Nottingham News Centre to thrive, to strengthen and to become leaders within and for the global heritage preservation context, media production sectors and EDI space.

NNC initiated an adaptation of our business plans to suit context, in response to potential changes in funders/ partners/ government legislation, helping to re-shape our future plans and long-term legacy. Strategic measures we now have in place that allow NNC to react and mitigate risk are: limit risk by taking action, when necessary, delegate leadership responsibility, all have a duty of care, work out/list possible risk (e.g., monitor risk registers) and rate levels of risk based on assessment, controls and experience.

NNC now has emergency plans in place to take necessary actions to ensure everyone helps to reduce risk – explained through staff training and public discussion activities.

NNC always follows UK law and governance, seeking qualified advice, when required.

Nottingham News Centre’s market assumptions for a future within EDI, the heritage sector and media sector, depend on our ability to effectively market (i.e on local, national and international levels) and to build on our services and activities, to a predicted 10% increase in service demand each year, going forward.

Services and income geared towards both digital and physical (hybrid) provision; to accommodate local national and global reach, and accessibility for all communities, is a goal for our social enterprise as well as the following business growth targets: new staff posts (sales, marketing, graphic design) a wider delegation of tasks /roles through specialist providers growth in existing and new visitors/ diverse audiences numbers online and physical offers, subscriptions source/accept various forms of income generation seek international partnerships within heritage preservation and media production celebrate social capital as well as economic /revenue capital through NNC's innovative EDI heritage activity participation and knowledge transfer activities.

Likely new consumer/client behaviours predicted for the years ahead are possibly: continuation and growth of online e-commerce (choosing competitive pricing options from overseas markets/free markets as well as from local/ national sources) bulk buying goods we like/use regularly instead of single purchases testimonials, ‘likes’, consumer reviews, stars and ratings, judging services and products the growth and demands of the ‘conscious’ shopper requiring/supporting ‘ethical’ products, services a reduction in unnecessary spending and move towards money saving initiatives a shift towards supporting organisations with social purpose and social missions/goals; particularly around improving the environment/ bio-diversity consumers rejecting ‘giant/ multinational’ retail outlets for more organic/local producers an increase in co-creative/ co-production activities between small and large conglomerates/ business groups.

Where do WE go from here?

Through this EDI HELP GUIDE 2023 and social enterprise case study sustainability report, Nottingham News Centre has been able to review and share some of our previous work as examples of good practice and activity over almost ten years of service. Our organisation, founded by Norma J. Gregory in June 2013, has provided an opportunity to look forward and to participant in making the world a better place, though education for all. This report highlights continuous, constructive, positive ways in working and making impactful output a way for your organization to track its effectiveness and improvements over time. The section below suggests four key strategies for continuing or improving your organisation’s EDI journey, setting aside time to celebrate and share success too.
