er, ‘Beautiful Baby Boy’

By Dave Scott Ian Cross is a busy six year old, whom I met last week.

He greeted me at the door of his home, welcomed me in and began playing with his toy cars again. I asked if I could sit and chat as I pulled out a small chair (where part of a robin’s eggshell sat). Ian quickly picked up the shell, telling me that he had found it earlier… just your average six year old… exploring and playing… but wait, there is one big difference… you see at two and a half years old, Ian was diagnosed with diabetes and his life changed. Everyday, the boy faces up to four needles.

His mom thinks back to the day at the hospital when Dr. O’Sullivan made the diagnosis and the Cross family life changed forever…

Over three million Canadians are affected by diabetes.

On September 11th at the Fairgrounds in Simcoe, folks will take part in this year’s TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes. Registration takes place at noon and the 5km walk begins at 1pm… refreshments, snacks, lunch and entertainment will all be provided.

Last year, Ian took part in his first walk and this year he is the local Ambassador… family and friends are signing up to be part of Ian’s team… there are even T-shirts coming from family in Saskatchewan for his team to wear.

Ian is a smart young fellow who doesn’t let his diabetes slow him down… but a cure sure would be nice… instead of those four needles a day and the constant monitoring of his blood sugar. From the day he was born his mom has always referred to Ian as her beautiful baby boy… so why not sign up and walk… raise a little money… and help find a cure for her, ‘Beautiful baby boy!’

Enough!

By Dave Scott I don’t know where to begin this story. So, I thought I would start by telling you a little about the folks that I’ve spent the summer swimming and running with, as we prepared for the Are You Tough Enough? 10km Swim and 10km Run to raise money for Camp Trillium.

Every year the funds raised go to a charity that does work for those surviving cancer.

Scot Brockbank, owner of the Runner’s Den, is one of the original four to make the swim from Pottahawk to Turkey Point… the guy has endless energy, a warped sense of humour, has already done the swim twice (this being his third time) and is the main organizer of the event. Scot knows first hand what cancer can do; his mom is a cancer survivor. His personality kinda’ draws you in…

Chris Peters (Otter), one of the original four… has a big warm smile and it feels like you have known the guy forever… he is humble in his swimming (he kicks all of our butts in the water) and he is always encouraging the rest of us… a true gentleman of the water.

Wayne Boswell (Elder Statesman), another of the original four… always seems to be the dad of the group… keeps an eye on all of us… seems to know when to encourage the rest of us… and imparts words of wisdom on us… he knows the waters well and has a great sense of humour.

John Rolfe, of the original four, gets it… I always learn something when I chat with John. He helped me with advice on my stroke… and on swim day that was invaluable… he loves a good joke and loves the challenge this swim brings.

Bill Martin… I watched Bill improve leaps and bounds in his swimming… he got stronger as the summer progressed… Bill too is very level headed and helped advise me on running… his calm personality is perfect for the group.

As for the ladies in our group… all class…

Annaleise Carr… just thirteen years old… we all looked out for her like she was our own kid… her big smile always reminded us to have fun and enjoy… sure she was the quiet one for a while… I mean with all of us adults around her… but soon enough she could dish it out with the rest of us… to Scot and Chris, ‘Beware this girl within a year or two, she will kick your butts… this girl can fly in the water…’

Nancy Norton… Nancy, the mom of two small girls is really a super mom balancing everything in her life and taking on new challenges as she goes. Nancy is always prepared… she would pop out of her car on Sunday morning ready to take on the challenge of the swim that day… Nancy has that determination, that drive… and she knows how to throw a great party!

Kristen Thompson… she is strong in both mind and physical ability. She once told me, “I am the only person to stop myself.” Early on in training she battled seasickness… but she persevered… she gets it… a quiet person who is a perfect blend to our group Fran Payne… I have known Fran for a few years and she has that quiet confidence about her.

This would be her second year… I know why she swims… she has lost some very close friends to cancer.

And well myself, Dave Scott… I guess I am a little bit of a pot stirrer… I enjoy joking around with the group and the camaraderie that it brings… I have watched the swimmers for two years… and I wanted the experience of the swim…

all of us swimmers have… sure we may not admit it… but we all hate to lose… we all love to be challenged… our drive to succeed… and the mindset that knows, no matter what, we will get it done. Focused to the point of obsession. Compassion… all of us realize we have an opportunity to help others for the greater good. Friendship… we all have each other’s back… and push each other to be the best we can be. And well just a little ego… you have to believe you can swim 10km open water… trust me it helps!

For the last two years, I have paddled with the Are You Tough Enough? Swimmers… I always heard how tough it really was… I believed them… I mean come on, these guys and girls swim 10km… with waves that reach four to six feet… watching from the safety of my kayak…

I could not try and understand their trials and tribulations…

Since April of this year I have trained my butt off to do the swim… and Sunday morning at 4am I woke… pretty confident… loaded the car.

I felt good heading out for Turkey Point to catch the boat to Pottahawk for the 10km swim. We arrived at 5am, but the weather had other plans and we decided to sit and wait as the weather cleared… around 6:30am the paddlers and swimmers climbed aboard the three boats we had commandeered (thanks to Shawn, Dave, Mike, Dan and Danny for getting us to Pottahawk).

You could sense everyone was a little nervous… the water was kicking up and Wayne the Elder Statesman Boswell (his third swim) warned us that it would be a tough crossing for us that day.

We arrived, all of the kayakers began to disembark and gear up their boats.

Being a paddler for this event the last two years, I watched with pride as the kayakers got down to business. Most of these paddlers show up at my place every Friday night and paddle, honing their skills for this very event. Their dedication to the swimmers safety is second to none.

Guys like Simon Yardley, who prepares like a madman and leaves no detail to doubt.

Rob Smith, with his quiet demeanour and watchful eyes, always scouting to ensure everyone’s safety, who in his youth played in this very water.

Sharon Smith, with her smooth paddling skills, keeping Annaleise, the youngest of the group (our thirteen year old swimmer) safe.

To Matt Breedyk, who turned down a shift at work to come and play… and whose paddle broke in the big waves… but continued on taking care of his swimmer with half a paddle until a new one arrived.

Scott Peck, who is probably the humblest paddler I know… who wants to please all.

Tim Yardley, my paddler, a friend who worked hard this summer on his paddling skills and knew just when to keep pushing me to finish the swim… ‘Thank you.’

To Mac Curwain… I don’t think she had ever paddled before the start of the summer… she made great strides… and her confidence blossomed, as she became a strong, very capable paddler…

Monica Scott, my wife… enough said, taught her everything I know… good thing she didn’t listen.

Tyler Wilson… believe it or not, Tyler came to the NYCA camp as a kid… and here he sits before us, strong, quiet, confident, doing follow up work checking on all the paddlers. Keep an eye on Tyler; he is one of the best rowers in the country… I think big things lie ahead for him…

To Curtis Martin… who guided his dad, Bill, throughout the big swim… the first father-son duo to do that. So amazing… a father being able to spend a special moment such as this with his son… I know Bill was a little worried about Curtis out there… but Curtis was another NYCA camp kid who is a very strong paddler… a great guy… apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Brian Craig, has a rich history of paddling and brought his experience to the table…

To Ted Payne and Bernie Shuttleworth, thanks for helping us out and keeping Fran strong…

Wally Mummery (AKA, Zodiac Guy)… for keeping an eye on the weather (Lord knows, anything could have happened out there)… flying up and down in the Zodiac, checking on everyone… to Wally, ‘Just knowing you were there put my mind at ease.’

The paddlers kinda’ get lost in the event, but their work for the swim is tireless with preparation and dedication… and then when the swimmer hits the shore they quietly slip away and let the swimmer take in the moment… I know each one of them can feel that sense of accomplishment the swimmer has… but the truth be told, out there in the water your paddler is your eyes and ears… in the water you can see nothing and you put all your trust in that paddler… so to all the paddlers, ‘You guys are the best - thank you!’

The overcast sky was gaining light as us swimmers began to gear up at Pottahawk… pulling on the triathlon wetsuit… putting ointment on our necks (the suit’s neck piece really digs in) zipping up, checking goggles and pulling on our yellow caps… hey trust me you want your paddler to see you… our conversation is light… we joke around… dispelling any anxiety that may be building… we climb into the water… hug each other… and wish each other good swims… we all know we can do it… all the training… the endless swims… it all boils down to this… the paddlers are ready… there is just one thing left to do… swim 10km.

he Swim

The excitement to finally do this hits me as I set my pace… the water underneath seems bizarre as we try to get beyond the sandbar, you can feel the crosscurrents below you pushing your body in two different directions. You relax, set your breathing, settle in, and finally you’re in open water… my thoughts at this time are all about strokes, keep it clean… relaxed… don’t rush… waves are beginning to build around me, I feel the power of the water wash over me… I peek for a breath… watching what appears to be a four-foot wave rolling by… for a split second your paddler disappears… and you think, ‘This ain’t no pool swim sunshine.’

Focused minutes start to turn to hours… the waves batter you, but you continue on… it is hard to find a rhythm, the waves seem to know when you are doing well and then, wham, you take a nice smack of a wave to the face and you start over… the only thing visible is your paddler… you are so low in the water… you really have no clue where you are… at one point, I am literally going in the wrong direction… again Tim, my paddler hollers out at me and gets me back on course… as I swim I remind myself why we are doing this… our visit to Camp Trillium… seeing the kids sticks in my mind… sure the swim is taking its toll on me… but nothing compared to what these kids have gone through… I think about my own two kids who are on shore waiting for me… I want to enjoy the moment that I come ashore and see them and my wife… I think about my friend Deb Mather, who lost her son to cancer twelve years ago at the tender age of sixteen… I told her this swim was for her and her late son

Jason… I will give her my swim cap when I hit shore… I need to finish this swim… I am over half way now…

I think Tim realizes I am tiring so he gets me to refuel and I start out again… I feel slightly nauseous… perhaps it’s the swell of the waves and a little too much lake water getting in… my pace slows… for a second I have a little self-doubt…

Can I? Will I? I keep going, push through it… focus… my shoulder is pounding with pain… the battering of the waves is taking a toll on it…

I shorten up the stroke again… I curse a few choice words (not Hub appropriate); it feels good to let out some frustration. I adapt… adjust…

Tim encourages me… I am close… I can see the Scotiabank bright red tent on shore… I laugh to myself and think, who knew it would be such a beautiful sight, that bright red tent… that it would make me realize I was going to do it. I give one more big push… I see Tim peeling away in the kayak and Wally slipping off in the Zodiac. I can hear cheering even with the earplugs in… I pull another stroke… and there it is, I am on the sand bar… I have made it.

I pull the ear plugs… throw them to Wally… turn to see my son coming out with my daughter and wife (John warned me about this moment… he told me it would be emotional… he was right). For some reason I want to cry… I fight it back…

I am weak… standing is awkward… sit, then stand in the water, I hug my family, nothing is said, they just know… Fran (a second year swimmer) hands me the Canadian flag… it has become a tradition that the swimmer who finishes before you, passes the flag on to you…

Fran hugs me, congratulates me and places the flag in my hand… it is a strong moment… I am Tough Enough… weakly, I pass the flag to my son… he looks at me and says that I need to carry it… I smile and

The other swimmers greet and hug me… all of us have done something very few have ever done… there is a bond… Scot tells me, ‘You did it…’

I know what these folks have just gone through… and my respect for them is unquestionable… the drive… the desire… the emotional, physical and mental aspects we can all relate to now.

I come ashore and seek out Deb, give her my cap and say, ‘This swim was for you and your son… thank you.’

Deb and Fran are both there from Scotiabank Simcoe with their amazing red tent… selling T-shirts and helping with the event…

‘Thanks guys.’

The crowd is amazing… my mom comes by and gives me a big hug… the volunteers have food for us… we go back in the water for a group photo… all of us are smiling and taking in the moment.

Oh… now to run 10km… a large group from the Runner’s Den join in and line up. The sun is now shining. You feel the energy from all the runners. They are ready to go, decked out in their North Shore Runners gear… it is like one big family. A few other folks take to the trails on their mountain bikes, making this event a unique Norfolk Triathlon. I fuel up on a couple of bars and OJ… and find Monica… I just want to spend some time with her… we run the 10km together…

I find myself just appreciating our time together… not much is said… but I am drawing on her energy… we head up the old hill at Turkey Point and around Front Road and out to Long Point Eco-Adventures.

Less than 2km to go and we head into the trails… it is awesome, I love running these trails and for me there is no better way to finish the day… relaxed in the woods taking in the moment… watching my son up at the front with his endless energy…

We finish and enjoy a wonderful meal and a few beverages on the lands of Long Point Eco-Adventures, overlooking the marsh and beyond the waters that we have conquered a mere hours earlier… it looks peaceful from this distance, but I know all to well, looks can be deceiving… the swimmers and paddlers swap stories of their adventure. The tireless work of volunteers does not go unnoticed as everyone is thanked. The festivities continue, folks slowly begin to slip away… it is hard to leave… I want to keep enjoying the moment… but I realize it is time to rest.

I walk away from the day knowing I left nothing on the table… I put everything I could into the swim… I feel like today I made a difference… somewhere out there a child will benefit from the support of Camp Trillium… and this amazing group of swimmers, paddlers, mountain bikers and runners just made a difference in someone’s life.

Caught in a web I seem to be somewhat caught up in watching the behaviour of insects and other small members of the animal world this summer.

After being away on vacation for a couple of weeks earlier this summer, we returned home to a hot and stuffy house. Wanting to air the place out, I immediately went through the house to open all the windows and ugh!!!! Everywhere I turned, spider webs caught on my arms, legs, and my face (the worst!!)

Those guys had a party while we were gone and left a mess behind.

As much as I try to keep the spider population and their webs under control in the house, the minute my back is turned they’re at it again.

A spider, which is not an insect but an arachnid, also lives in my car’s side-view mirror; well, not in the mirror, but in the space behind it.

At night, the spider busies itself building a web between the mirror and the door to catch dinner and most mornings I sweep it away. My car looks bad enough as it is without adding cobwebs to it!

However, I occasionally forget or I’m in a hurry and the web stays where it is – even when I’m travelling down the highway at 100 kmp! Is there anything that is manmade and that flimsy-looking that will withstand 100 kmp winds?

A spider web, or cobweb (from the obsolete word coppe, meaning "spider"), is built by a spider out of proteinaceous (made of proteins) spider silk extruded from its spinnerets. Spiders produce silken thread using several paired spinneret glands located at the tip of their abdomen. Each gland produces a thread for a special purpose; for example non-sticky

safety lines, sticky silk for trapping prey, or fine silk for wrapping it.

Spiders use different gland types to produce different silks, and some spiders are capable of producing up to eight different silks during their lifetime. Most spiders have three pairs of spinnerets, each having its own function. The main difference between spider webs and cobwebs is that spider webs are still in use, while cobwebs are webs that have been abandoned. (Hopefully, my house was full of the latter, since I hate to think that there are really that many spiders living in the house!)

There are many different types of webs, but the most interesting to me is the orb web. Watching a spider as it works at building a web from beginning to end is quite fascinating. To start an orb web, the spider releases a sticky thread that is blown away with the wind.

If the breeze carried the silken line to a spot where it sticks, the first bridge is formed. The spider then carefully crosses this first line, reinforcing it several times until it is strong enough to bear the weight of the entire web. The spider then makes a loose thread of silk that is attached at both ends of the first line and hangs down below it.

A third thread from the middle of this loose thread is pulled down and attached at the end to make a Y shape that forms the first three radii of the web. Then a frame is constructed around this Y to which the other radii are attached.

After all the radii are completed the spider starts to make the circular threads starting with a spiral of non-sticky, widely spaced threads so the spider can easily move around its own web during construction, working from the inside out. Then, beginning from the outside in, the

While the sticky spirals are formed, the nonadhesive spirals are removed as there is no need for them anymore.

The spider, after spinning its web, will then wait on or near the web for a prey animal to become trapped.

The spider senses the impact and struggle of a prey animal by vibrations transmitted through the web. Many day-hunting orb-web spinners hide at the edge of the web with one foot on a signal line from the hub to avoid being prey themselves to birds and Family, friends and teachers other predators.

It’s Time To Start Planting Your Spring Flowering Bulbs

o take full advantage of what Mother Nature has to offer in your garden all year round T you should try to plant a some Spring flowering bulbs. They are the very first to bloom during the last dreary days of Winter and announce that Spring is coming again. With a bit

of planning and selection you can easily extend the joy of having Spring flowering bulbs in your garden from a few weeks to several months. It is also easy to see how combining bulbs with your established perennials creates a harmonious relationship where each other without one being a dominate factor. The fresh colors and texture of the emerging foliage of perennials offers unique opportunities for contrast or complimenting colors with flowering bulbs. An added benefit is that the new growth of the perennials will hide the dying foliage of the bulbs once they have finished flowering! And not long after that of course most perennials themselves will bloom, thus smoothly extending the sequence of flowering plants for you to enjoy.

Your bulbs may also be planted at the foot of trees and bushes, in annual flower beds, in your lawn or rockery or even in flower stands or pots!

Planting Your Bulbs: In general, plant 3x’s as deep as the bulb is long (measured from the base of the bulb).

Typically 8 inches (20 cm) for big bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and hyacinths and 5 inches (13 cm) for small bulbs like grape hyacinths and crocus. Plant in well-drained soil, cover up, water well and wait for spring.

Tulips, daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs require a long period of cool temperatures to undergo the biochemical process that allows them to flower. So, in the fall get them in the ground ideally six weeks before hard freezes to give them the time they need to develop strong roots.

Bulbs contain the nutrients they need to bloom their first year, but a fertilizing program will keep plants healthy and ward off diseases and pests. Compost and manure are two good organic fertilizers that improve the soil and ensure a good soil structure for bulbs. Use organic supplements to add nutritional balance. Compound mineral fertilizers can also be applied, but check the label to see if fertilizing is appropriate for your bulbs and the best time of year to do so. Top-dressing with fertilizer like 9-9-6 slow release or either 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 soluble fertilizers are examples.

Squirrels enjoy the taste of tulip bulbs if they are easily accessible but not so with daffodil bulbs. So inter-planting the two together or mulching the garden will help protect them Once a bed of Spring flowering bulbs are established the process of naturalizing occurs which simply means that a bulb flowers again after the first year and starts producing more bulbs on their own. However, they will need your help to get the food they require to recharge and regenerate for the next season’s bloom.

Some things that help are: 1. Resist the urge to tidy up fading foliage or mow over it as the plants require about six weeks to build up reserves for the next season.

2. Deadhead the Tulips as the formation of seeds will sap the energy from the bulb. Daffodils & other bulbs do not require this action.

Intravenous Vitamin C and Cancer

itamin C has several actions that may offer protection against cancer V and or other serious illness. It protects cells and their contents, including DNA, from damage. Vitamin C also helps the body neutralize

environmental pollution and toxic chemicals, it enhances immune function, and it inhibits the formation of cancer-causing compounds such as nitrosamines, found in processed meats. Vitamin C preferentially kills cancer cells. It is not toxic to normal healthy cells and can be given at very high doses without harm to the patient. The use of vitamin C as a cytotoxic (cancer cell-killing) agent has been used for over 40 years.

Intravenous therapy means to administer a substance or drug directly into a vein. Vitamin C taken in capsule form by mouth cannot achieve high enough blood levels to kill cancer cells, thus the use of intravenous therapy is necessary. Therapeutic dosages of 25 to 100 grams have been used regularly to eliminate cancer. It is impossible to consume that dose by mouth. Optimal absorption of capsule doses by mouth is 1000-2000mg per hour. Generally people will experience diarrhea at higher oral doses anywhere from 2000mg to 10,000 mg (2-10 grams), depending on their individual bowel tolerance and tissue saturation. When vitamin C is given through IV no diarrhea occurs. Blood levels of 350mg/dl must be maintained for therapeutic results to be achieved, and this effect lasts between 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the person. Oral routes cannot guarantee a constant serum level. Vitamin C given through IV lends itself to controlling this vital variable in order to ensure cytotoxic levels within the blood. None the less, intravenous vitamin C is a safe therapy. It does not have side effects such as hair loss, nausea, diarrhea, or fatigue.

IV Vitamin C can be used safely along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat cancer directly, decrease side effects from conventional treatments and increase treatment outcomes.

Courtesy of Road Rally for Rwanda Youth can make a big difference and eleven year old Elspeth Irwin has proven this is the case. Last year when her Mom, Carrie was the student pastor at St. Andrew’s-by-the-Lake, Turkey Point, Ontario, Canada, the family participated in the annual 3R Rally (Road Rally for Rwanda). This is a fund raiser that supports the general administration of the Vunga Vocational Training Centre in Rwanda, making it possible for Rwandan students to learn a skill. Since September 2010, following the Rally, Elspeth took the initiative and rallied friends, family and her church youth group to help her with bottle drives raising funds to further support the Vunga School.

She presented the results of her efforts to Rev Canon Tony Bouwmeester and Bishop Terry Dance on his recent visit to St. Andrew’s-by-the-Lake. Everyone was surprised when it was announced that she had raised $1,200.00. This is an outstanding effort by an eleven year old girl. Thank you Elspeth from the students of Vunga Vocational Training Centre and the READ Project Committee (Rwanda Education and Discovery Project Committee). You did an amazing job!

This year the Road Rally for Rwanda (3R Rally) is scheduled for Sunday,

September 18th beginning at 1 PM. It is being held at 2 Creekside Lane, Port Ryerse, the property of Craig Combe. The Rally format follows the Poker Run style.

Each vehicle can have 2 participants or as many as it legally can accommodate.

Each participant registers with $100 or raises the $100 with the help of a Pledge form. Those who pay the $100 outright will receive a tax receipt of $75 while the supporter on the pledge sheet will receive tax receipts for $20 or more.

The Rally is fun for all who participate and volunteer and all our work benefits the students who have not had an opportunity like ourselves, our families or friends. In most cases this Vunga Vocational Training Centre is their only chance to learn how to make a living and survive.

Invitations are being sent or emailed to past and present participants, some regular Vunga School Project supporters and those who have requested Rally information.
