By Jean Mottashed Canadian film maker Chris Wynn has a powerful story to tell, and in his film "Forgetful Not Forgotten" he documents his family's personal journey through the stages of Alzheimer’s disease as it slowly but relentlessly takes its toll on his beloved father. Chris' film was screened at the Strand Theatre in Simcoe last week as the kick-off to the Haldimand-Norfolk Alzheimer Society's 16th annual "Coffee Break" fundraising initiative being held from now through the end of October. About 75 people poured themselves a cup of coffee, picked up a biscuit and sat down to view one of the most tender, touching tributes a son could make to his father. And in the process, the audience gained a huge appreciation for the effects of the disease on families across Canada, and for the strength, patience and courage needed to see a loved one through it. "There's a lot of hope and love in this film," Chris said about his cinematic effort to put a human face on a disease that is claiming more and more people over the age of 50. "Storytelling is a powerful tool, and I just needed to share the story." Diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 57, John Wynn had the love and support of his wife and three adult children, but as is typical with many families, Chris said at first "it was hard to believe there was something wrong with him. Maybe it was denial or something. Not knowing what was happening was hard." Susan Cuming, public education coordinator for the Society, says this is the reason why it is important to raise awareness and educate the public about Alzheimer’s. "We want to give people the tools and coping strategies to deal with the disease. We hope people will come out and learn about it before they reach the crisis stage and say 'ahhh, I need help!'". Last year the Alzheimer Society raised $1.2 million across Canada to help support programs for patients and families. Susan said any individual, group or organization can get involved by hosting a coffee break in homes, churches or offices. Simcoe resident John Race addressed the crowd before the screening urging them to take action on behalf of families facing dementia issues. He said now, during the campaign for the October 6th provincial election, is the ideal time to engage our political candidates in a dialogue about developing strategies to cope with dementia. He pointed out that Alzheimer’s is the third most expensive disease and that 76% of our nursing home residents are being affected by some form of dementia. "We need to train more healthcare

The Norfolk Pros are asking Norfolk residents to show their support for Milwaukee Brewers, closing pitcher John Axford. With over forty-two saves this season, John has positioned himself to be an important part of the Milwaukee Brewers quest for success in the Major League Baseball playoffs. John was raised in Port Dover where his parents Brian and Vera still reside. He is one of the notable graduates of the Port Dover Minor Baseball Association. During the 1990’s John helped the club secure three provincial championships. Rick Wamsley, current goaltending coach with the Ottawa Senators and the founding member of the Norfolk Pros offers congratulations to John on his outstanding season with the Brewers. Wamsley says, “John Axford is another product from our local sporting community, which has produced a number of professional athletes including Stanley Cup winners. By Dave Scott When you are able to think… clearly… every moment of everyday, our brain is functioning… directing us… memorizing… solving… reacting… we think, therefore we do… we all take it for granted… and maybe we look at folks who struggle differently… perhaps in our misunderstanding we misinterpret them, or if they are quiet… we wonder. Now is the time that we need to look deep, to understand situations that folks are in. As I mentioned earlier, loss of memory, decrease in judgement, decrease
in understanding and change of mood and behaviour… all these are symptoms of Dementia. I sat last week with a friend of mine, John Race, and we discussed the work that the Alzheimer Society of Haldimand Norfolk was doing. John’s passion to help the cause is stronger then ever… his late wife, Hazel, suffered with this terrible disease. We discussed the numbers right here in Haldimand Norfolk. John described it as a Tsunami. The organization is currently servicing one thousand individuals right here at home… and John knows that number will soon rise to two thousand. John pointed out that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of Dementia and that we need to realize that this is NOT

I stopped in Port Dover Saturday afternoon and watched some of the Port Dover Steelheads game over at the high school. The Steelheads are a football team made up of six, seven and eight year old kids from the area. This day, they were taking on a team from Mississauga and boy it was fun to watch… I bet there were one hundred or so spectators there taking in this highly entertaining game. Dover was decked out in their blue uniforms and did the area proud, battling their opponent to a 13-13 tie… their record is now 2-1-1, pretty darn good for a first year team. Head coach, Leroy

He was very happy about how far the team has come already and was quick to point out that it is all about the kids having fun and learning football fundamentals… Leroy himself is originally from Alabama… he played college ball at Mississippi Valley State University and was an offensive guard. Leroy explained how the coaching staff and all of the volunteers have worked hard to make the Dover team a reality. He wanted to thank Alex Zurby who is the driving force behind getting football going in the area.

After more than six years of dedication and hard work by a collaboration of funders and a committee of social service organizations, Norfolk County is about to get its first public transit system. Ride Norfolk, which will provide bus service to Simcoe, Port Dover, Port Rowan, Delhi, and Waterford, will officially launch Tuesday, October 4 at the Norfolk County Fair & Horseshow. “Ride Norfolk will provide an affordable, reliable method of transportation for everyone in Norfolk County,” said Haldimand & Norfolk Rural Transportation Initiative Co-chair Jane Ryder. “This new transit system will allow more opportunities for young people, seniors, and other people who don’t have their own transportation to travel between communities for appointments, work, or and social outings,” she added. To celebrate the launch, the Ride Norfolk bus is partnering with the Norfolk County Fair by providing transportation to and from the fair from Wednesday through Saturday, beginning daily at 9:00 am. On Wednesday, the bus will run to and from Port Rowan; on Thursday, Port Dover; Delhi on Friday; and Waterford on Saturday. A one-way fare will cost three dollars, which is half the regular price. By Karen Matthews, General Manager, Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show I love this time of the year! As a matter of fact, the whole fair team starts really kicking it into the spirit when we have those first cool nights and we notice the leaves on the trees start to sport their fall wardrobe. The countdown for the fair goes from triple digit days to double, then to single and then we start our countdown by hours. We’re heading into that exciting time now. The fair office is now open seven days a week. We anticipate in the neighbourhood of 14,000 entries will come in, most of them in the next few days. We love the excitement of kids dropping off their entry forms after having spent hours preparing their entries for the fair. Just yesterday, a five year old girl wandered into my office and excitedly explained to me that she and her mom had been canning and making jam for the fair. You bet that I’ll go down and try and find that entry after judging to see how she placed! To me, that’s the spirit of the competitive side of our fair. The joy of being part of something that is much bigger than ourselves, something that is engrained in our history. For 171 years, young and old alike have been part of making those entries at the fair. One of my favourite parts of the fair is the tradition of opening day. I can still remember the excitement of waking up early on Young Canada Day and donning my “Lakers” football jersey (probably borrowed from a football-playing boyfriend at the time), and heading to the grandstands to decorate those old wooden bleachers in green and white! It always made for a very long day, and by noon, our voices were blown out but we still had enough in us to take a ride on the Zipper or being able to scream when the ride operator screamed, “Do you want to go faster?” on another ride. I think we’re going to make a lot of kids happy this year when the Zipper returns to the fair. It’s

the most requested ride and still flip flops and challenges riders to keep down all of the junk food that they’ve been munching all day! The honour of officially opening the fair has fallen over the years, to Prime Ministers, Governors General, Lieutenant Governors and good friends of the fair. This year is no exception. Society President Sharon Petheram has invited Norfolk’s Food Ambassadors, the Two Fairly Fat Guys to officially declare the 171st Fair open. Agriculture is, and continues to be, the heart and soul of the Norfolk County Fair, and Dan Barker and Brian Reichheld have volunteered tirelessly to share their passion of cooking local. Throughout the rest of the week, you can find these two fun-loving cooks, hosting our Chef stage along with providing our audiences the chance to learn more about cooking local through their demonstrations. I am also looking forward to having Bob Blumer of Food Network’s “Surreal Gourmet” and “Glutton for Punishment” join us. Bob is currently in Japan working on a brand new series he’s about to launch. His passion for food has taken him on a quest around the world for new and unique food and challenges. His style is definitely entertaining. Bob is here on Wednesday at 12 and 5 in the Rec Centre. I want to thank our friends Mary and Michael at Butcher & Restaurant Supply Company for providing all of the professional equipment on the stage, along with the Causeway Restaurant, and the Erie Beach Hotel for presenting Bob. BBQ guru Ted Reader joins us on Thursday for two shows. Ted is known for his outrageous BBQ creations, like mile high hamburgers, and meat stuffed in meat and grilled to perfection. We are grateful for the support of Callahan’s Beach House in presenting Ted. the online auction. Funds raised from this auction help to improve the fairgrounds, our buildings and our equipment. It’s a fun way to support the fair. Speaking of food, it’s one of the top three reasons that people visit the fair! Our Exhibits Manager Robin Keane has been working hard to bring some new and interesting food items to the fair. The hit of the Fair season this year has been “Deep Fried Koolaid”. I can’t wait to try it right here at the Norfolk County Fair. We are hosting 11 new food booths this year including five from right here in Norfolk County. I want to try the Belgium waffles and the Perogies on a stick, and the bloomin’ onions, and the fruity snow cones, and Tiki Dave’s smoothies, and the sweet potato fries... yum. But I’m also looking forward to celebrating the 65th birthday of Bryan’s Dixie Dogs. Maybe I’ll try to eat 65 this year to honour that milestone! We also have approximately sixty new Commercial Exhibits. Shopping at the fair could never be better. I understand that one of the booths will be offering to touch up your hair (maybe I can stop there everyday?), and will be offering the latest in hair feathers to match school colours. There’ll be a chance to try the latest in pruners and loppers, power bands for energy, things that slice and dice, jewellery makers, and thousands more ideas. Long Point Eco Adventures will be debuting their “glamping experience” (that’s glamour camping) and setting up their king sized hotel room-style tent right in the middle of the Curling Building. While we are jokingly referring to this as the “staff lounge”, we invite everyone to stop by and check out the latest new, hip, accommodations for visitors to Norfolk County. It’s also the start of new car season, and Rick McCall Volkswagen will be debuting next year’s cars on Tuesday at the Fair. They’ll be located down near the grandstand so stop by and check them out. They’re part of a sold out special “Harvest Dinner” at the Fair. This dinner is part of our opening day festivities and features food prepared by Norfolk’s finest chefs
under the direction of Heather Pond from the Blue Elephant. We are also very thankful to The Brick for providing $2000 worth of furniture as a prize for one lucky diner. If you didn’t get tickets for this year, watch early for next year’s event. You won’t want to miss sampling wines from Ontario’s South Coast Wineries, or sampling foods from Ontario’s Garden. But, nothing is more exciting to me than a great concert! I am really over the top about Canadian Music Icon Burton Cummings rocking out the grandstand on Tuesday night! Burton will be performing with his band, and will be joining us right after being inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame. I can remember what I was doing when most of the Guess Who hits were climbing the charts, and singing along to Burton’s solo songs on late night road trips. Everyone who has seen Burton’s show recently tells me that it’s one you won’t want to miss! Burton is in fine form and having fun performing many of the songs from his entire career catalogue. Rock on to “American woman”, “Clap for the Wolfman”, “Stand Tall”, “Share the Land” and many, many more on Tuesday. This show is being funded by the Province of Ontario with the generous support of US Steel, CD98.9 and the Simcoe Reformer. Tickets are available through the Fair office. $50 for track seats and $35 in the grandstand plus fair admission. This is the only time you’ll see this Canadian legend in Simcoe. Don’t miss it. It’s the show everyone will be talking about on Wednesday morning. Speaking about a buzz for concerts. Terri Clark was recently awarded, “Female Country Vocalist of the Year” for the fourth time at the Canadian Country Music Awards held in Hamilton on September 12th. By MARG WERDEN Swimming with ocean creatures Imagine a gigantic tropical fish aquarium filled with hundreds of fish from dozens of species in all shapes and sizes and in just about every colour combination you can think of. Now add a reef to the bottom of the aquarium that is made up of volcanic rock and coral in a rainbow of colours and in shapes so fantastic they don’t look real. Add a few species of strangely shaped marine creatures and some even stranger plants. Then imagine yourself floating at the top of the aquarium looking down at this magical world and you will be close to knowing what it is like to snorkel on a Hawaiian reef, something I’ve done a number of times in the last week. Now all you have to do is imagine that, while you’re floating along quietly looking at all the sights, you notice a dark shadow moving toward you out of the corner of your eye and suddenly right below you is a huge Hawaiian green sea turtle. It was incredible! We had already seen some of these turtles basking in the sun on a beach on Oahu, and one must have gone past us on its way to the beach when we were in the water, but to have one swim no more than a metre below us as we snorkelled was something we didn’t expect to +RPH 5HVSLUDWRU\ 6HUYLFHV
see. The Hawaiian green sea turtles, known as “honu� in the Hawaiian language, are beginning to make a comeback after years of being harvested for their flesh and shells. However, the green turtle is still listed as endangered worldwide and the Hawaiian population is listed as threatened. Despite its name, the green sea turtle is not green; the carapace remains predominantly black with various shades of olive and yellowish gold forming swirls and irregular patterns on their shells. It gets its name from the colour of its internal body fat, which is tinted green from its primarily vegetarian diet, mainly algae that it nibbles off rocks and reefs. This turtle species is the largest of the hard-shelled marine turtles. Usual adult weight is around 250 pounds (115 kg) and the length is over 3 feet (90 cm.) From the main Hawaiian islands in the southeast of the Hawaiian archipelago where they spend most of their lives, the adult turtles migrate to the northwestern Hawaiian islands (a round trip of over 1,000 miles or 1,600 kilometres) to mate and nest every two to five years after they reach sexual maturity between the ages of 25 and 40 and their shells grow to approximately 30 inches (80 cm) in length. Turtles return to where they were hatched to lay their eggs and a female will lay two or three clutches of 100 to 110 eggs each before swimming back to her favourite resting and feeding area in the protected waters of the

inshore reefs around the Hawaiian islands. Hatchlings, like the ones I wrote about last week, start life at only 4 to 5 cm in length. With considerable luck and protection from humans, green sea turtles can live to be 80 years old and reach a weight of 350 pounds. Although awkward on land, the green sea turtle is a proficient swimmer. In short bursts, a green sea turtle can swim at a speed of up to 20 mph (32 kph) when fleeing a potential predator such as a tiger shark, its main enemy. The sea turtle can also dive up to 570 feet (175 m) during its migration, but it is usually found at shallow depths of up to 20 feet (less than 5 metres) during the day, diving to 35 to 50 feet (10 to 14 m) at night to rest. It can hold its breath for about 2 hours while resting or sleeping, but must breathe every five minutes while it is actively foraging. Despite being protected by law from hunting and harassment, the green sea turtles still face many threats. Among these are entanglement with recreational fishing line and gear, disease, collisions with recreational boats and jet skis, illegal harvest for meat and shells, reef degradation and coastal development, and marine debris and pollution. In other parts of the world, green turtles face a serious threat from the destruction and loss of nesting sites. Fortunately, over 90% of nesting activity for the Hawaiian green turtle population occurs at the French Frigate Shoals, inside

a National Wildlife Refuge. This, combined with its threatened status, has created an environment in which the Hawaiian green turtle should prosper. Unfortunately, the Hawaiian green still faces severe threats, most notably fibropapilloma tumours and degradation of foraging habitat. Current Hawaiian green turtle population levels are still thought to be below prewestern contact, and probably preWorld War II levels as well. In 1992, the estimate of mature female green turtles associated with the French Frigate Shoals was set at roughly 750. I feel very fortunate to have gone for a swim with one of these prehistoric creatures while here in Hawaii and hope to have another such opportunity in the next week. Oh, by the way, did I mention the little, or perhaps not so little, “fly in the ointment� of the “aquarium� I described above? Sharks! But that’s another story....although I will say I got up close and personal with a few of them (and still have all my fingers and toes).

Fans asked for him back, and we were pleased to oblige. Reserved track seats are $25 plus fair admission or general admission grandstand seating is free with fair admission. Speaking of admission to the Fair, don’t miss the chance to save some money on admissions. All Roulston’s locations are offering a oneday ticket to the Fair for only $8. (That’s a $4 savings off of weekend admissions). Or, if you’re a real fair junkie, you can buy a 7 day pass for only $40. That’s the best deal going. You can also purchase a $27 ride all day ride bracelet at any of their locations which include Downtown Simcoe, Simcoe Mall, Port Dover and Delhi. Seniors should take advantage of our Senior’s Day on Wednesday. Thanks to Rona, everyone over the age of 60 can come to the event for only $5 at the gate. Students are always FREE on Tuesday for Young Canada Day, thanks to the support of Fanshawe College, Staples and Hald-Nor Credit Union, and this year, Friday is a P.A. Day for all schools in the Grand Erie District School Board and the Brant, Haldimand Norfolk District Catholic School Board. All students will receive half off admission from 9 am to 3 pm and World’s Finest Shows are offering 2 riders for the price of one (you can use your ride bracelet to ride all day, but it’s not part of the 2 riders for the price of one promotion). There are lots of activities for students on Friday. We Got Game, a provider of big screens and big fun will be providing gaming in the Rec Centre, and on Friday night, students can cheer on their friends in the Battle of the Bands! Speaking of cheering, I’m personally excited about the Fair hosting a Guinness World Record breaking attempt on Saturday. Port Doverite, Lucas Wilson will attempt to break the record for escaping from a straight jacket, suspended upside down, wrapped in chains. The attempts will take place on Saturday in the bandshell area with the final attempt in the grandstand just before George Canyon takes the stage.
Adjudicators from Guinness World Records will be here to witness what we hope will be the smashing of the record. Our thanks go to the Property Guys for helping support our attempt. You can help us count down the seconds as he wiggles his way through this major feat! My hope is that you’ll make some time during the seven days of the fair to celebrate with us at the Fair. We’re older than Canada, but we’re not old fashioned. As a matter of fact, the Fair is the fourth largest of its kind in Canada, and follows the Canadian National Exhibition, the Royal Winter Fair and Western Fair in London. All in our backyard! Over 100,000 visitors will come through out gates to learn more about Norfolk County and visit our displays in the commercial buildings, savour the flavours of Norfolk in Flavourfest, and visit our Ag Awareness programs. They’ll also witness the thrill of competition as six and eight horse hitch teams take the field and compete in our Horse Show. We’ll break records this year, and we’ll have competitors lose records. For me, it’s all about
being part of something bigger than ourselves.
