orth Shore at the Bay

By Dave Scott Sunday, March 25th marked the accumulation of a lot of training by local folks‌ of endless hours spent running. Last fall it all started as members of the North Shore Runners started their three times a week workout‌ for some it was a true beginning‌ just learning to run‌ for others it was stepping up into the 5-10 km run range‌ and for the crazies there was advance training‌ all in all, everyone helped each other build their

running capabilities as fall turned to winter. Training took on many different forms, may it be hill work, tempo runs, track work‌ and long, long pace runs‌ Doing hill work‌ up and down at the marina hill in Port Dover, an endless cycle of drive and desire‌ never wanting to let the hill beat you‌ at first the hill would look like a huge obstacle‌ but soon you were conquering it. The pursuit to build the lungs and legs as one fluid unit‌ soon made you realize the only way 5+66HUYLFHV

the hill could beat you, was if you beat yourself. The distance runs slowly climbed, 10, 15, 20, 25 km, some building up to over 30 km in a morning run‌ sometimes in rain, wind, snow and cold (-20C at times)‌ a run that will try to break you‌ make your legs heavy‌ and play with your mind‌ wondering, ‘Why am I doing this?’ but each time you make a new distance, you understand a little more about yourself‌ about your pace‌ you begin to crave more‌ conversations with fellow runners eat up the hours as you go‌ other

days your music sets you free, to an even faster pace. Then there is the tempo run‌ 10 km where you put your speed work in‌ working your breathing‌ your heart beating as you strive for speed. The pace of your legs take over‌ finally winter is disappearing, the snow runs are over, your goal is within sight, you relax and all your training comes into play, making each run just a little easier. All this started last fall‌ the tiny coloured night lights, bobbing, as the group made their way around Dover in the dark

he F ishful T hinking Show, R emembers K en Heighington

By Dave Scott We all have annual commitments in life, joyful moments we honour… in a lot of cases, it may be that once a year gathering of friends… perhaps it is a BBQ, to watch a game, or just hang out… we look forward to them… it keeps us together when life gets busy! This story is about four fellas, John & Ken Heighington, Bob Thompson and Charlie Wray, who every Thanksgiving Monday would travel to Lake St. Clair for a day of musky fishing

Ken lands a Lake St. Clair trophy musky, October, 2009.

aboard Jim Fleming’s charter boat, Drifter II… this annual trip had become a tradition that each member of the group looked forward to. Any of us who has such a yearly event, can appreciate the bond that these men have… nothing better than being out on the water with your pals… sharing a few laughs and in search of that perfect musky. Tragedy struck the group in January 2011, when Ken lost his battle with cancer… Charlie wanted to honour his fallen friend by continuing

the Thanksgiving tradition and filming an episode of his show, The Fishful Thinking Show, in Ken’s memory. By Dave Scott During the past two years, many changes have occurred within the Norfolk Youth & Children Association (NYCA). Not necessarily what we wanted, but understanding that change can be the best barometer for what the future may hold. As many of you know, the NYCA for a long time was located at the old North Public School in Simcoe. Our Preschool and After School Programs thrived, along with our Day Camps and Summer Camp; our Fitness Program, which helps recovering cancer victims, and our Senior Fitness Program were also having a huge impact. The whole building was being used, with NYCA programs, Grand Erie programs, NACL programs and more. Easily, hundreds of people (ranging from preschoolers to seniors) walked through our doors daily. With the changing times and with the adaptation of the provincial legislation for ELK Full Day Learning program, organizations with preschools and after school programs such as ours are being phased out. Although I personally do not agree with the legislation, I respect what has been done.

Courtesy of the Child Nutrition Network The Child Nutrition Network of Haldimand & Norfolk will be hosting a Country Breakfast Fundraiser on April 18th at Springview Farm Golf Course. The breakfast will support the network’s Farm to School project which brings fresh, locally grown produce into Haldimand and Norfolk schools as part of their student nutrition programs. The Network is excited to receive support for this project from Scotia Bank Simcoe, Esso Imperial Oil Foundation, Ontario Power Generation, Soverign Foods, Norfolk Tractor; Vic Powell Welding, Deb Canada, Millard Rouse and Rosebrugh and Springview Farm Golf Course. The Child Nutrition Network, established in January 1998, is the local partnership that supports student nutrition programs in Haldimand and Norfolk Counties. The partnership includes members from HaldimandNorfolk REACH, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, Haldimand War Memorial Hospital and the broader community. The Student Nutrition Program is a provincial initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) and is administered regionally and locally through Haldimand-Norfolk R.E.A.C.H. The Farm to School project initially brought fresh, locally grown produce into two Dunnville elementary schools starting in September 2010. This exciting initiative has been expanded to include eleven local student nutrition programs across Haldimand and Norfolk counties. These programs are now serving locally grown or sourced fruits and vegetable products at least one day per week. “We believe that what comes from our local soil here, is the best locally grown produce that will benefit our children, as well as letting the students know who our local farmers and green house growers are”, says James Richardson, Richardson’s Farm Market, one of our local partners in the project. This project will not only provide students with more access to fresh vegetables and fruit, it will also increase their awareness of local growers. The Child Nutrition Network intends to continue to expand this project to other local student nutrition programs. This is a win-win situation for both the students that participate in the student nutrition programs and the farmers that can provide locally grown produce. Please join us on April 18th at Springview Farm Golf Course from 7:00 am – 9:30 am for a country style buffet breakfast to show your support for local student nutrition programs and the Farm to School project.

This year the Proctor Marine Open House happens to fall on the same weekend as Friday the 13th. With all of the motorcycle activity in town that weekend we have decided to take on a Friday the 13th theme for our 25th Annual Spring Open House Celebration! Staff will be flaunting our new Jolley Roger T-Shirts and we will have a free Friday The 13th inspired

Courtesy of the Haldimand Abilities Centre The Ontario Brain Injury Association says that there are 49 brain injuries in Ontario a day. The social, emotional and economic consequences of brain injury can be devastating not only to the survivors themselves, but to family members, caregivers, support workers and the community at large. To assist those living with an acquired brain injury, Brain Injury Services offers an Outreach Program. This program offers opportunities for skill training and optimum community access, whether individuals live on their own or in supported living environments. “When it comes to health care, nobody should be left behind. All too often, rural residents don’t have access to the same services as those in urban areas,” says Case Facilitator Sarah Matthews. “Brain Injury Services offers services in Haldimand and Norfolk. To obtain these services an application must be submitted indicating that the individual is over 16 years of age, with a diagnosed acquired brain injury. Brain Injury Services staff are available to help individuals fill out the application. A monthly Peer to Peer Support Group is offered to individuals with a brain injury on the third Tuesday of every month from 2pm to 3pm at the Haldimand Abilities Centre. An event in June is also being planning to celebrate Brain Injury Awareness Month. Brain Injury Services has offices at The Haldimand Abilities Centre, 42 Main Street South, Hagersville, and at the Caregiver Wellness Centre, 645 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe. Outreach Service applications can be found at either office or online at www.braininjuryservices.com. For

orfolk Nature otes

By MARG WERDEN Early arrivals Spring is well on its way very early this year, but I’m not sure that Mother Nature won’t surprise us yet with a bit more of the white stuff. I know I won’t feel comfortable removing my snow tires or putting my snow shovel away until some time after Easter. Unfortunately, however, migrating birds don’t have a calendar to tell them that it is still only March. They move based on weather conditions and this year’s warm winter and spring may have severe repercussions on some species if we get another short shot of winter. My daughter tells me that the Tree Swallows have already returned to Point Pelee, which means they won’t be too far behind here in Norfolk. Several years ago, I remember going for a walk on the beach in Port Ryerse at Easter and seeing dozens of Tree Swallows listlessly flying just above the water looking for insects where there were none because it was too cold for them to have hatched out. Many of those swallows perished from starvation, having returned too soon. It took several years for the population to rebound. Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen again this year. Another early spring arrival that is easily overcome by cold weather is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Fortunately, we humans can easily help this species by putting out nectar-filled feeders so early arrivals have a source of food until the flowers begin to bloom. We can also help Robins by placing raisins and other cut-up fruit in bare spots under a tree. Despite the lack of snow and the milder temperatures, we should continue to stock our feeders for seedeating birds because food is still scarce and the nights continue to be quite cold. To assist birds in their nestbuilding efforts, it is now time

Wolves play an important part in maintaining healthy balances in the ecosystem by controlling the population of other species. to clean out existing nest boxes or to install a few more. There are many websites and books available describing what type of nest box is favoured by the each species. If you have a dog or cat and regularly brush their fur, don’t throw the hair into the garbage. Throw it outside and let a bird make use of it to line its nest.

Are they really “big bad wolves?” I have only ever seen one wolf in the wild and that was in the Rockies of Alberta, but they seem to be making a bit of a comeback here in southern Ontario with dozens of sightings being reported from Windsor to Ottawa. Although we have been brought up to fear wolves (think “Little Red Riding Hood,” “The Three Little Pigs,” and other fairy tales that painted the wolf as the villain of the piece), they are, as most species are, an important part of the food chain and vital to keeping a balance in nature. One of the top items on a wolf’s dinner menu is venison and studies have shown that wolves help control populations of White-tailed Deer where populations of these animals have exploded and caused damage to forests. The presence of wolves also helps keep the number of coyotes in check, thus allowing the populations of other predators to grow. For instance, lynx and coyotes compete for the same prey, the Snowshoe Hare, and when coyote populations are decreased by the presence of wolves, the lynx population increases. Canis lupus or the Gray Wolf can range in colour from grizzled gray or black to all white and are

the largest member of the Canine family. Although, as mentioned earlier, they mainly eat large hoofed mammals, they will also eat smaller prey and will scavenge and eat animals that have died from starvation and disease. Despite their reputation for viciousness, wolves work hard for their food. Hunting in packs, they only manage to kill one large animal for every ten chased. According to the Hinterland Who’s Who website (co-sponsored

by Environment Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Federation), “There are no records of wolves killing humans in Canada or the United States. Yet, when wolves were spotted near rural communities, fear used to grip the residents,” and the wolves were hunted and killed. Perhaps it’s time to reassess the value of these beautiful and useful animals in the wild and let them do their jobs in helping to maintain a healthy balance in the ecosystem.

By Claire Senko Last June, when the Old Town Hall's 2011 Concert Series (Our first! A risk! A labour of love!) closed, I was left feeling so full -- of wonder, love, and gratitude -- that I fervently penned some ardent (not to mention overtly gastronomical) proclamations about music. I looked that note up today to use in this column, and upon reading it hesitated for an embarrassed fraction of a second; it made me blush! BUT it also made me smile -- as I quickly remembered how it good it felt to express the following notion: "...music is meant to be shared! it’s meant to be spooned into hungry hearts. it’s meant to be poured into empty soul-cups. it’s meant to be ripped and broken like a communal loaf of bread, dipped into the oil of friendship and devoured! it’s meant to be packed in a paper bag and snacked on when your insides growl. oh how music needs to be

F

consumed, to get to the middle of you! ..." Yeah, I was feelin' it. And, you know, I still am! The 2012 Concert Series is now rolling, in fact, we’re just a few days away from the second show in this season’s line-up, and (oh!) are we ever in for some delicious fare! This Saturday, March 31, Run With the Kittens appears with the colourful and captivating songstress Kori Pop, and my presenting partner Sara Moody Veldhuis and I are more than a little excited to be introducing these acts to the Hall. To those of you who attended last year's series, and subsequently signed up for this year’s slate of roots/folk/indie bands and singer-songwriters: You’re about to be escorted off the gently trodden path! The "jaw dropping" Kittens have been billed as "Canada's most entertaining live act" (Exclaim! Magazine). Their sound almost defies description... almost: Try "surfinfused-psychedelic-folk-punk" and "beautiful Eastern melodies,
