re You Tough Enough?

By Dave Scott Many a time you have heard me proclaim that my youth was spent growing up in Port Dover… to start with, both my parents were Doverites and my dad’s side has a history of working on the lake as commercial fishermen… probably a dozen times as a kid, I would get up at 4 am, head down to the docks and go out with him… I was pretty young, maybe ten to fourteen years old. The first time out, I was sicker then a dog… the tug was in the trough as the nets were being pulled aboard… and the sudden roll and sway quickly brought my breakfast to the deck and off the boat… had to earn my sea legs… I swore then and there I wouldn’t go back… but for some reason I was drawn back out… there was just something freeing about being out on the water, it was the one thing I could relate to with my father… we never discussed it… but you knew!

Over the years, wherever I lived, the lake wasn’t far away… I spent a good deal of time kayaking and just enjoying the water.

This brings me to today’s water topic… swimming. I am an old lifeguard who still enjoys trying to perfect the front crawl.

For the last two years I have assisted Scott Brockbank and his swimming buddies as they swam from Pottahawk to Turkey Point, roughly 10km… it was amazing to watch both years, as this group of swimmers had to face strong east waves and wind, pounding them constantly… but they fought the waves and all finished the swim.

It truly was cool to watch from my kayak as these men and women tested their strength, endurance and determination as they made

the crossing… the sheer joy and exhaustion on their faces as they pulled themselves from the water was incredible to be part of.

This spring, when I went for my physical my cholesterol level was well… not just a little to high, but kinda’ off the charts, and with a family history of heart disease, it was time to get my stuff together.

First up, was cleaning up the diet, which was easier then I thought… the next step was exercise, so I decided to hit the pool again and began swimming back in April.

I knew about a month in, that I wanted to do the Pottahawk swim.

I contacted Scott Brockbank at the Runner Den in Port Dover and he told me the training schedule for open lake swims.

I purchased a triathlon swim suit and set out for a swim in late May at the beach in Port Ryerse… I lasted about 10 min and my face and hands were numb… Ok maybe this wasn’t a great idea!

I was a little nervous about joining the group in Port Dover for their swims on Sunday morning… but I took the plunge the first Sunday in June, and was pleasantly surprised at being able at swim a little over 2km that first time out.

I have gotten to know some of the swimmers over the last two years as I kayaked along side them.

They all have their reasons for training for the big swim… maybe in memory of someone, for their own sense of accomplishment, or perhaps to raise funds. The funds that were raised year one and two went to Norfolk General Hospital, $5,000 and $8,000 respectfully.

This year, the goal is $15,000 with the funds headed to Camp Trillium

Open lake swimmers training off of Dover beach. in Waterford. The funds raised are always based towards a cancer related charity. It is something that the organizer of the swim, Scott Brockbank, firmly believes in… his own mom being a cancer survivor.

Scott remembers back when he started the open water swim program… at first it was just training to help folks get in better shape… another element to his already successful business at the Runners Den in Port Dover.

It wasn’t long before two swimmers (Chris Peters and Wayne Boswell) approached Scott with an idea to put all that training to use… a fundraising swim from Pottahawk to Turkey Point… roughly 10km of open water.

They decided to do it and the, ‘Are You Tough Enough?’ swim was born!

What drives a person to want to swim open lake for ten kilometres?

Well, for me it was something Wayne Boswell said to me… he told me he swims for a couple of friends he has lost to cancer… both of those folks were my friends too and watching Wayne hit that water off of Pottahawk the last two years with a look of sheer determination was all I needed to see, to know someday I too would challenge myself to make that swim.

Chris Peters swims to raise funds to help folks. This year, Chris is taking on a bigger challenge. At the end of July, Chris plans to swim from Turkey Point to Port Dover. That swim is personal… you see Chris lost his brother last year and this 14.5 km swim will be for his brother. Chris is by far the

strongest swimmer of the group, with boundless energy… he flies by me in the water like he is in a speedboat and I in a rowboat. I could see talking with Chris, that the Turkey Point to Dover swim was going to be an emotional one for him… his sister is coming from Miami to join him for the swim.

It is perhaps Chris and his family’s way to honour his brother’s memory… I have no doubt Chris will make the swim!

I think one of the cool things about the swim is the freedom it gives you… you literally are that drop in the ocean or in this case lake… you become part of the water, I mean you really cannot see that much, you are at water level… I feel no fear or anxiety just a sense of peace, of quiet… your thoughts wander, but your body focus maintains its rhythm… you think, just get it done, but you hope it lasts longer… odd I know… but very rewarding.

I hope my training pays off and come September 4th, I can complete the swim… no I will complete it! For myself it has all come full circle… from the kid hanging out with his dad on the lake… to my son being my guide kayak on lake swims in Ryerse… huh funny how life goes.

Nobody wants to think about their death and who wants to pay more tax than they have to?

But, with a little planning you can minimize the taxes your estate might pay at death and ensure a smoother transition of your assets to your loved ones. Over the next two weeks, we will examine the eight top strategies to deal with that potential tax bill.

L eave A ssets to Your Spouse If you leave your assets to your spouse or to a spousal trust for that person’s benefit, you will manage to minimize taxes on your death. Assets left to a spouse or spousal trust are deemed to be disposed of at the deceased’s adjusted cost base (ACB), thereby deferring tax until that spouse (or trust) sells the asset, or until the surviving spouse’s death. A spousal trust is a special structure that allows you to leave assets to benefit your spouse, and leaves the day-today control and management of the assets to the trustees (which can include your spouse).

In order to benefit from the tax-free rollover at your ACB on death, the trust must have very specific terms (a visit to a tax professional is highly recommended). The trust document must state that the spouse is the only one entitled to the income of the trust while he or she is alive and no one other than the spouse is entitled to the assets (i.e. capital) of the trust during that spouse’s lifetime.

Although assets left to a spouse or spousal trust are automatically transferred at their ACB, this does not mean that your estate will necessarily have to choose the ACB as the transfer price.

There may be some situations where your estate may still wish to have the fair market value rules apply, such as a situation where there are unutilized capital losses on the date of death and your estate wishes to trigger some capital gains to offset the losses. Minimizing Taxes on Death â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Part I ACB. If assets are transferred to your spouse or spousal trust at fair market value, this will become the ACB for future capital gain or loss calculations.

Give A ssets Away.

Since you are only deemed to have disposed of assets you own at the time of your death, it stands to reason that if you actually dispose of assets before your death your estate will avoid the potential tax bill on death. If you know to whom you want to leave certain assets, and will not have to use those assets to fund your dayto-day living, you might consider giving those assets away during your lifetime. Although giving assets away is generally considered a disposition for tax purposes, and therefore could give rise to a tax bill if the fair market value at the time the asset is gifted is greater than its ACB, there can still be tax savings by using this strategy. In order for this idea to work, you will want to be sure that the asset you are giving away is likely to grow in value in the future or you will be in a lower tax bracket in the year the gift is made than the year of death.

Choose Beneficiaries Carefully.

Some individuals wish to leave some assets to their spouse, but also wish to leave assets to other heirs as well. In these situations it is very important to choose the beneficiaries of particular assets very carefully. Since assets left to a spouse can avoid the fair market value disposition on death, you may want to leave assets that have appreciated in value to your spouse first, if you can. If you`re going to leave assets to others, it`s best to leave tax-friendly assets such as cash, Guaranteed Interest Contracts (GICs), money market funds, or assets that have not greatly appreciated in value, since the deemed disposition of these assets at fair market value wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lead to a large tax bill anyway. For assets flowing through your estate, since you may not know today which assets should be left to which beneficiaries, you may simply want to provide your executor with the ability to make that decision after consulting a tax professional upon your death.

Speak to your executor and/or tax advisor today to ensure that these exemptions will be taken advantage of when filing your tax return: Principal residence exemption: This exemption can be used to offset the capital Judie Rice, gains on the disposition Financial Advisor (or deemed disposition in the case of death) on one property you own. This could be your home, but it could also be a cottage or other second property that you ordinarily inhabit (rental properties do not qualify.)

Enhanced capital gains exemption: This exemption can offset up to $750,000 of capital gains resulting from the disposition or deemed disposition of your shares in certain private companies in Canada, a qualifying farm or fishing property. There are a lot of tests to meet to claim this exemption, so speak to your tax advisor.

By Emily Gerrett One of the best benefits of living in a county like Norfolk comes in the form of fresh local produce that is always close at hand to brighten summer dishes.

This year’s asparagus season has left both the farmers and their customers happy, even if there were some bumps in the road along the way.

The season started by not starting at all, for two weeks of cold, rainy weather that delayed the cutting of fields.

some spirits, but ended up actually helping the crop in the long run.

“This season was up and down like a roller coaster,” said Neil Benin, the receiving manager at Sandy Shore Farms in Port Burwell.

“The rain that slowed us at the start ended up allowing for a couple extra days of cutting because of all the water in the ground,” he said.

Sandy Shores, which is sent asparagus from 15 different growers in the area to grade, deals with high volumes of the crop on a daily basis. This season the

total volume of asparagus cut was higher than last year, even with the two week delay at the start. On average, about a 100 000 pounds of asparagus is processed at the farm each day.

Another problem that asparagus farmers faced was a week of excess amounts of stemphylium affecting the crop, also known as purple spot.

This is a plant pathogen, which is caused by excess amounts of wetness, and leaves the crop with purplish spots with brown centres.

Farms big and small were affected by purple spot this season.

Tuesday October 4th, 8:00 p.m. singing sensation Burton Cummings and Band will perform on the grandstand stage. Burton Cummings, OC, is a Canadian musician and songwriter who was the lead singer of The Guess Who from 1965 to 1975. During that time Burton sang, wrote and cowrote the lion’s share of the Guess Who music, including successes like These Eyes, Laughing, No Time, American Woman, Share the Land, Star Baby, and Clap For the Wolfman. In 1970, The Guess Who’s “American Woman” stayed at #1 in Billboard for three weeks. After that time Cummings recorded many of the most famous Guess Who songs including; ”Share the Land,” “Hand Me Down World,” “Albert Flasher,” “Rain Dance,” “Sour Suite,” “Glamour Boy,” “Star Baby” and “Clap for the Wolfman.”

Burton Cummings sang lead on all 20 Guess Who singles that charted in Billboard from 1969 to 1975.

In 1975, after 10 years, Burton Cummings left The Guess Who to become a solo artist and the group

disbanded. His subsequent solo successes included “Stand Tall”, “I’m Scared,” “Break it to Them Gently,” and “Fine State of Affairs.”

He received the Genie Award, Canada’s equivalent of the Oscar, for “You Saved My Soul”, which appeared in the movie “Melanie”, a film in which Cummings had a prominent dramatic role.

Cummings continues his writings, both songs and prose. SONY/BMG has released a compilation album titled the Bachman Cummings Song Book featuring hits from The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Cummings’ solo career. Bachman & Cummings also released “The Thunderbird Trax” an album Burton and Randy did in 1987 in White Rock. It was only made available at live concerts of Bachman and Cummings.

Cummings’ latest release is Above the Ground. It contains 19 tracks, all written by Cummings himself, with no co-writers. Long time fans have called this his best work ever, and it has met with critical praise since its release.

“There was a late start, but the frost that we’ve seen in the last two years didn’t happen this year, and total poundage was up,” Koptik said.

With the seemingly endless number of boxes and long days spent cutting, grading, weighing and shipping, the workers of asparagus farms are happy to see the season end well.

“The last day felt like a dream,” Benin said.

But although it is the end of the asparagus season, for the farmers and their workers, there is always other great local produce ready to be harvested.

By Dave Scott Ann L’Ecuyer from Port Dover called me about the Bowen Technique a number of months ago… of course I am finally getting around to the story now… sorry Ann. The Bowen Technique was hard to describe and the more we talked the more curious I became. Ann talked about some of the local folks she has helped with the treatment. Celebrating our parks Saturday, July 16 is Canada’s Parks Day 2011 and there is no better year to get out and enjoy one of our many parks than this one, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Parks Canada.

In 1911, Canada became the first country in the world to establish a national park service dedicated to preserving our natural and cultural treasures. Today, Parks Canada spans the country protecting more than 277,000 square kilometres of land and water and preserving places of historical significance. A network of 42 national parks, 167 national historic sites and four national marine conservation areas are now managed and protected by Parks Canada.

Canada’s first national park, Banff National Park, was established in 1885, after conflicting claims to the hot springs located there threatened to destroy the area.

The Canadian government stepped in and protected the spring and surrounding 26 square kilometres “from sale or settlement or squatting.” Other places were subsequently protected in the same way and by 1911, Canada had five national parks. Three of these parks were on the railway line and back then, as now, tourists from Eastern Canada and Europe came to see the stunning scenery.

The government soon realized that just designating an area as a national park was not going to be enough and created the Dominion Parks Service with James B. Harkin as its first commissioner.

Harkin developed a framework for the service that encompassed accessibility to the parks for all, wildlife conservation, the need to promote the nation’s history, and the benefits of tourism to the nation.

In 1911, Canada’s population was only 7 million and less than one per cent of families had access to a car.

As a result the Canadian Pacific Railway was instrumental in transporting tourists to the parks and promoting them as a vacation destination. In the early days, logging and mining were allowed in national parks and large-scale resorts, such as the Banff Springs and Lake Louise hotels, were built in the mountains. However, in 1930, Parliament passed the National Parks Act, which gave national parks greater protection and dedicated the parks “to the people of Canada, for their benefit, education and enjoyment.”

At the same time, Canadians were becoming more interested

in preserving our history and the federal government was looking to extend the national parks system into Eastern Canada.

Three years after it was established, the Dominion Parks Service took on the responsibility of preserving and developing sites of national historic significance.

With the growing popularity of cars, Canada’s parks became accessible to ordinary Canadians, not just the richer tourists.

Parks Canada staff began to promote the national parks and historic sites by writing guidebooks that outlined scenic drives and campgrounds.

Long term care has changed greatly over the last few decades.

There are no longer any positions in the Health Care system which provide for someone just walking in off the street and starting to work.

All jobs have minimum requirements of education and without that; you won’t even get a look in the door. That is as it should be. Long Term Care has become an increasingly complex system of care.

The Programs Department, usually called “Activities” is the department responsible for, among other things, all those bus trips that you see mentioned here. The bus outings are one of the most visible parts of the programs Department and we are very fortunate in having the bus so readily available to us. Not every home has one.

Our bus places us out in the community; it provides us with opportunities to get out in the community and to let us feel still connected to not only our past but our future as well. This requires an “F” class license; the apparent simplicity of the name belies the responsibilities that accompany it.

On the surface, the trips look simple enough. But any bus outing requires not only attention to the safety of the bus, which means a complete safety check each and every time we go out, but also a safety check for our residents. Among the items to consider: accessibility at our destination, mobility issues for each individual, dietary needs, medicinal needs, apparel needs, equipment needs and more.

We carry a back pack which tries to address any situation which might arise while we are out and of course we always have the cell phone on board. Including the driver, the bus may have up to 17 people on board, including wheelchairs and walkers, residents, staff and the ‘equipment of the day’. This is a tremendous

responsibility and we do everything we can think of to make this as safe an outing as possible!

Our trip to the Aviation Museum, No. 6 RCAF Dunnville, was an often poignant reminder of those difficult years that still haunt many of our seniors who served in the wars in one capacity or another. The day we were there, two planes were missing; they had flown out earlier in the day so the museum is vibrant with life, not just a repository for relics.

This makes three such Museums that we have visited; we began with the Hamilton Heritage Museum and then the Tillsonburg Harvard Trainer Museum and now Dunnville.

Our residents have thoroughly enjoyed each unique experience.

As you can see by the pictures, we had a full bus of residents and volunteers. Harvey was equally as fascinated by the vintage planes as he was by the marvellous new lightweight single person planes and Dr. Lim just couldn’t resist poking his head inside the plane.

In the end, we came away with a renewed respect for all those who fly the skies in whatever vehicle they choose.

Sometimes, a bus comes to us.

Our favourite example is the SKIP Program (Seniors / Kids Intergenerational Program). This program matches up kids from Lynndale Heights Grade 5 class with our seniors and they visit once a month to do various projects and games. Each June, the program culminates in a BBQ in the center courtyard. Not wanting to jinx the weather or anything, but it always co-operates with us and shines on us every year. As we have seen

At NYCA camp last week, Laura Lee Forrest (Circle of Friends Pottery) brought out her pottery wheels and the kids created some cool and unique clay items.

I was very impressed with Laura Lee and her fun way of capturing the kid’s attention and engaging them in the art of pottery. The smiles on their faces explained all we needed to know… that Laura Lee was a big hit.

It was great to watch a child’s imagination expand when it came time for them to sit down behind the wheel and create. Each child combined motor skills, using their foot to control the speed of the

Camp wheel, while using hand eye coordination to work the clay. The artists have that serious look as they are making their masterpieces.

This would be a great program in the elementary and high schools locally… did you hear that teachers!

A very well attended service with a strong message of love was delivered by Bishop Terry Dance and Reverend Canon Tony Bouwmeester. Numerous couples renewed their Wedding vows including Reverend Canon Tony & Marianne Bouwmeester and Angus & Christine Macleod (celebrating their 46th Anniversary that day). Angus was the organist for this inspirational service and as a special treat his

many times by the smiling faces, there is much joy to be found in the joining of the generations.

We finished up the month with a fishing trip to Mount Pleasant Ponds. We packed a picnic Lunch, grabbed our fishing rods and headed out. Eric settled in at the pond in no time flat! Harvey Chapin’s daughter Tracey, an able fisher (person?) herself, was one of the volunteers for this trip. On our way back, we stopped by the Fairchild-Chapin Cemetery to get a feel for family history. It was a wonderful day out for everyone.

The ease with which these events unfold belies the work and planning that is needed to make these events come about. There is not only the organizational factor and the simple logistics of putting all the little pieces together so the event runs smoothly; it’s also

A wonderful afternoon of memories and conversation which included a display of wedding pictures and historical documents was enjoyed by all.

The aches and pains that we good naturedly complained about in our 30’s became a little less humorous in our 60’s and can be downright debilitating in our 80’s. The spirit is more than willing but sometimes the flesh is not quite so much ‘on board’ with the agenda.

To excel as a programmer, good organizational skills must be melded with an understanding of the various nuances of change which we all undergo as we age and which might otherwise limit our Residents participation in our activities.

Along with a sound knowledge of the aging process, Programmers must also be adaptable and able to “go with the flow”.

Like most segments of long term care, programmers are continually upgrading, taking

workshops, keeping an eye out for anything which might enhance our interaction with Residents.

We might be on a shopping trip or vacation with the family and we’ll see something and think, “Gee, I’ll bet the residents will like that.” Or “Wouldn’t that be fun” and we will bring those ideas back to work.

Over the last few decades, Programming has taken on a new and very important role. It’s not just busy work; it puts the sparkle in our resident’s eyes, the spring

in their step and it keeps the spirit looking for more. Its rewards come in the smiles on the faces and it’s the greatest job there is!

Change was the theme in the very first line of this month’s Hub, and so it is in the last lines. There will be one more Hub facilitated by this particular staff; retirement looms and therefore next month will be my last one. I will be doing something of a “walk down memory lane” as I look at Norview’s last 20 year s of history. See you next month.

Playwright John Spurway Returns To Lighthouse Festival Theatre With Dramatic Comedy Jessie’s Landing, Directed By Veteran Expert Mark Schoneberg.

With two successful productions behind him, John Spurway, Canadian Playwright from Fredericton New Brunswick is back at Lighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Dover, from July 12th - July 30th with his World Premiere of Jessie’s Landing, a heartfelt story about a young woman reconnecting with her father after a four year absence and the loss of her mother.

Veteran Director, Mark Schoenberg has worked closely with John to “shape the journey an estranged father and daughter take in order to reach their destination: a balance between the past, the present and the way forward”. Mark has directed productions which include The Three Sisters, Duet for one and Twelfth Night.

Maria Dinn plays Jessie and has appeared on the Lighthouse stage as Natalie in Jenny’s House of Joy and Kate in Grounded. She has also appeared in theatres across Canada in Skin Flick, Steel Magnolias and The Graduate.

David Rosser, who is no stranger to Lighthouse, played Orson in Ned Durango, Henry in The Perfect Pitch and Mario in Hard Hats. He has also appeared at other theatres in The 30 Steps, Little Shop of Horrors and The Music Man. Derek Ritschel, Lighthouse Artistic Director reports, “Jessie’s Landing will certainly tug at the heartstrings and many people will surely relate to this story, but the one element that helps so many of us through challenging times is ‘humour’ and Jessie’s Landing has a healthy dose of laughter.”
