t. Vincent de Paul Soup K itchen

By Dave Scott Last week was my first visit to St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen in Simcoe… an email came my way asking if I would like to stop by the kitchen as Ontario Power Generation (OPG) was visiting... OPG is the corporate sponsor for the kitchen during the month of January. I dropped by 43 Kent Street South on Monday just before lunch and made my way to the Knights of Columbus Hall. The Knights of Columbus have graciously donated the hall to the Soup Kitchen. As I reached the top of the stairs and peered into the hall, I noticed a number of tables and chairs set up, they were nicely organized for the days lunch, neat and cleanly set... it kinda’ had that grandma’s house feel… place mats, silverware, coffee cups… the doors had opened at 10am... folks were having a coffee and just chatting… some sat alone… others in small groups… some worked away writing... all where there for the meal. As my eyes finished scanning the room I saw a fella’ I had known for most of my life from Dover… I walked over, said hello and struck up a conversation. I had not seen him for a few years… he seemed a little shy at first but we got talking about Dover and sports... I asked how things were going for him. Things had been tough lately… but he wasn’t complaining… just trying to get back on his feet! He explained that the plant he had worked at shut down a few years back and he had been unable to find work… plus with two bad knees and a bad back from working on a hard floor for all those years and then with a diagnoses of diabetes… long term he is hoping to get disability… or find a job that would be suitable for him to work at with his health conditions. He said he had to leave his hometown… couldn’t afford the

rent… and ended up in Simcoe… he caught a break he says when he was able to get into housing, they pay his rent and utilities… he snacks on the crackers in front of him and continues on, saying that with the funding he gets from Ontario Works (OW), $429.00 a month, it is hard to get by, he chuckles a little as he says the dietician he sees for his diabetes reminds him which foods he should be eating… “But you buy what you can afford” he says… he knows he needs to improve his diet… He found out about the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen from a friend and has been stopping in for a few months now. He enjoys the meal, which is always good… and the meal helps stretch what little money there is. Plus it gets him out socially… he realizes that if he just sat around his apartment, it wouldn’t be good for him mentally… once in awhile he stops in at the Resource Centre… “It’s pretty good.” I asked what his long-term goals were for himself… he looks back at me and simply states… he is just concerned about tomorrow! He tells me of guys who have it worse off than him… homeless and without food… he shakes his head. I ask if he got home for Christmas… “No, a friend invited me over and we had dinner… I told him don’t buy me anything, because I can’t afford to buy you anything.” His meal comes and he relaxes a little, enjoying the mashed potatoes, chicken, mixed vegetables… and dessert if he wants too! I tell him it was great to see him… and I move on… before I leave, I will stop by and say goodbye. I head to the kitchen area and chat with the ladies who have put this meal together. The volunteer ladies cook Monday and the men cook Thursdays (the kitchen is open from October until April). They are all there because they want to help; many of them have been helping the

kitchen for a number of years (the Soup Kitchen has been running for twenty-eight years). The ladies say that in the last few years the age of the folks using the Soup Kitchen is growing younger. The ladies remind me that the kitchen couldn’t run without the donations they receive in food and money from all over the community. Over at another table I see Don White who sent me the email about the ST. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen Our conversation begins with Don giving me a little history of the Soup Kitchen, which goes a little something like this… Herb Smith and Jack Wellhauser (recently passed away) began the kitchen twenty-eight years ago… they saw a need... folks out of work needing a meal! Their church, St. Mary’s in Simcoe started the kitchen… and it continues on here today. Don says that once a month they collect donations from St. Mary’s and St. Bernard’s (in Waterford) plus the local canned goods drive that Holy Trinity High School, St. Joseph’s Elementary and École St. Marie French Emersion do is a huge help. Not to forget corporations like OPG who get involved, along with grocery stores, farmers, volunteers and folks who make individual donations as well.

Along with all this, St. Vincent de Paul also runs a food pantry... dropping off food to over 50 families in the Simcoe and Waterford area. I thank Don for his time and turn to say good bye to the fella’ I know… but he has finished his meal and has left. I head down the stairs and out into the sunshine of a beautiful day… my mind races thinking… we need to do more… but what? How? I think about my life, sure some days are tough… but not this tough… I can’t image being alone, wondering where and when my next meal may come. The gentleman I sat with never complained… although he had every right to… but he didn’t… he was doing what he could with the resources he had… everything takes time … from housing... to funding from OW… to qualifying for disability… to regaining his health… all in time… his hope is to get back to work some day… He didn’t like the position he was in… but he realized he needed help to get his life back on track… and today maybe that meal at St Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen helps to make a tough day a little more optimistic! To all the folks that keep St. Vincent’s kitchen humming, ‘Thank you!’

earn To Play A Guitar

By Julie Swainston The right teacher can make learning to play a guitar easy and fun! Jerri Hooley is just that sort of teacher. She has an inbred love of music that gives her the ability to make her students really believe they can learn to play any of their favorite songs. She teaches out of her home on the 7th concession just 10 minutes west of Simcoe in a cozy room with lots of windows. When you walk in there is no doubt it is a music room with posters and instruments, 2 chairs, a music stand, pedals, and amps. Each person who comes has his or her own reason for wanting to learn to play the guitar. For some it’s so they can play while sitting around a campfire with friends, or for others it’s so they can play at church and some even dream of being in a band one day. Those are just a few reasons but it really doesn’t matter what the reason is, they all have one thing in common – They love music! And that’s the bond they also share with Jerri. Whether the student arrives as a complete beginner, has some knowledge of how to play or used to play years ago and needs a refresher course, Jerri is able to adapt her teaching skills to fit the level they are at. It’s all about having fun and enjoying the time spent learning to play. With the enthusiasm Jerri brings to teaching she makes each student feel they can accomplish each step in the process. She encourages them to bring in a song they wish to learn and that’s where they start… learning a few chords and techniques. The half hour lesson is about gaining the knowledge in an easy laidback atmosphere. They then go home to practice and come back the next week ready to learn the next step. It isn’t long before the chords actually begin to sound like the song! That’s a big thrill for the student – and teacher! For Jerri to see the happiness on their face when the student actually begins to believe that it is EASY and FUN and they CAN do it. That’s what makes it all worthwhile for her. Jerri was part owner in her own music store in

Jerri (left) with one of her students Amber Peart. Calgary, taught guitar and played in a bluegrass band. In 1986 she and her fiancé decided to move to Simcoe to get married and be closer to her family. It wasn’t long before she began teaching again, joined a rock and roll band “Suede” and later when that band folded she started her current band “Dharma Road”. She is still doing what she loves - teaching and

playing in a band. Music is good for the soul! And she hopes to instill her love of music in her students. If you too, love music and have always wanted to play a guitar but never thought you could, give Jerri a call at 519-428-1779 and get started on your dream… it really is easy and fun and YOU can do it!!

orfolk C ounty Agricultural Society

Highlights of Annual General Meeting

The Norfolk County Agricultural Society held its annual meeting today at the Junior Farmers Building on the Fairgrounds. The purpose of the meeting was to report on the financial activities of the organization to its members and to elect members to the Board of Directors. Seven directors were elected to the Board, including one new member. The newest director elected to the Board is Lori Broughton. Returning to the Board is Mike Bollert, Linda Bresolin, Grant Edwards, Sharon Judd, Brian Kenney, and Walter Petheram. Executive positions on the board are elected on an annual basis, with a two year term limit. Sharon Petheram remains as President, Percy McNabb as First Vice President, Alan Duthie as Second Vice President, and Larry Dawson remains as Past President. In accepting a second year term, President Petheram stated, “I am honoured to be elected into the position for a second year. We had a great year working together as an organization, and I look forward to building on last year’s success”. The financial statements were presented to the membership at the meeting. “We had a wonderful year”, says Karen Matthews, General Manager. “There were three important elements that came together to make that happen. First, I want to congratulate our volunteers and our Fair Committee Chairs for their great foresight to provide us with some very creative, new programming. Secondly, our marketing team really kicked in with some new ideas to drive attendance at the fair, and finally, we would

be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge that seven, sunny, spectacular days make it a lot of fun to attend, or work, at the Fair. I am very proud of the work of the entire board, volunteers and staff on this year’s fair”. The Norfolk County Agricultural Society is a registered, non-profit organization, and as such, any excess of revenue over expenditures from operations is invested back into the organization through capital improvements. The bottom line of $50,000 was reinvested back into capital improvements on the Fairgrounds such as improvements to buildings, etc. This year’s annual operating budget was $1.8 million, of which, only $5,000 is an annual grant from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). All of the rest of the funds to produce the fair are either raised through the community, through fundraising, or through admissions at the Fair. “Last year, we invested over $ 250,000 in attractions, and over $111,000 in prize money”, says Matthews. “We support community fundraising efforts by providing honourariums to local service clubs, hockey clubs, etc. in the amount of $15,000 for working at our gates. Local high schools received over $5,000 for providing infrastructure support to the Fair”. The support of the community is integral to the operations of the Society. “We absolutely could not continue to improve and grow our fair, if it were not for the community partners of the Fair and events. Our sponsorship program is directly responsible for the great programming that you see at the Fair”, says Matthews. “As well, through

9

the Government of Ontario’s Celebrate Ontario program, over $200,000 was invested in new programming at the Fair. Our very successful Harvest Dinner and Tuesday night’s Burton Cummings show were a great new addition to the event.” The Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions, awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the success of the Fair for many years, was presented to Barb Gaal. The Order of Merit Award from the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions, awarded to a firm or organization that has provided outstanding service to the Fair, was presented to the Following; Roulston’s, First Ontario Credit Union, Dave Lorimer of Lorimer Plumbing, Greg Landon of Norfolk Simcoe Electric Ltd. The Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies presented Fred Kent with an Agricultural Service Diploma for his service over the years as a volunteer. Dianne Persall and Marg Eldridge, who both are long standing volunteers with the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show, were named as Honourary Life Members of the Society. The Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show is the fourth largest fair in Ontario following the CNE, the Royal Winter Fair, and London. Last year over 119,000 visitors attended this seven-day event.

By MARG WERDEN Warm winter weather affecting visitors to feeders The warm winter weather we have experienced so far this winter seems to be affecting the species of birds that are visiting our feeders – not in a particularly good way. I have never seen Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 suspense/horror film “The Birds” because if I want to see horror, I can watch the news, and because I really don’t want to have a fear of being swarmed by hordes of birds. However, several times in the last week, I was taken somewhat aback by a huge flock of mainly Brown-headed Cowbirds swooping down from the sky onto my deck where my bird feeders are located. I tried counting them once and got as far as 60 before they took off. Although I know these birds have as much of a right to eat at the feeders as any other bird, I can’t say I’m happy about it. They are greedy, aggressive, and eat everything in sight. I can’t keep up to them and have stopped trying. Until the weather gets colder and there is a chance of seeing something besides House Sparrows, Cowbirds, and Starlings at my feeder, I’m going to limit how much food I put out. If the Cardinals, Juncos, Chickadees and Tree Sparrows can find their own food out in the fields, so can the others! Tough love! I’m not really a fan of the Cowbird because of what I like to call their “laziness.” This species of bird is known as a “brood parasite” because the female does not make a nest of her own, but lays her eggs in other birds’ nests and allows those birds to raise the young cowbirds. Although the cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of more than 220 other species of birds, individual females tend to focus on one particular host species.

2

10

Unfortunately, most of the host species don’t recognize the cowbird eggs and end up working overtime trying to feed a baby bird that often is much larger than the adults trying to nurture it. There are a few birds, however, that can recognize Cowbird eggs and either puncture them or throw them out of the nest. The Yellow Warbler is among these species, but is too small to get rid of the eggs. Instead, they build a new nest over the top of the old one and hope the cowbird doesn’t come back to lay another egg. To add to the problem, Cowbird eggs hatch faster than the eggs of the host species. This gives the Cowbird nestlings a head start in getting food from the foster parents. As well, their fast pace of development often results in the death of their nest mates either by smothering them in the bottom of the nest or crowding them out of the nest. In winter, Brown-headed Cowbirds may join huge roosts with several other species such as Starlings, Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds. One such mixed roost in Kentucky contained more than five million birds. Makes by swarm of more than 60 seem fairly insignificant! The Cowbird was originally a bird that followed the Bison on the Great Plains of North America, something that explains their parasitic nesting behaviour. The Cowbirds followed the Bison herds to feed on the insects kicked up by the large animals, but since the Bison followed the melting snow to find fresh spring grass, the Cowbirds had to move too. This, of course, caused a problem with raising a brood of chicks. The solution was to lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let those birds raise their young. The range of the Cowbird expanded from the west in the 1800s as the forests were cleared. Cowbirds don’t like forests and generally live in open areas. However, roads, farms, power lines and other

human structures have opened the forests enough that the Cowbirds now invade the nests of species that didn’t have to worry about them until after the arrival of humans. Some of these species, such as some warblers and vireos, are now on the endangered list because of this problem. The Cowbird is common across most of North America and the continued fragmentation of forests is allowing this species to expand their range even more.

Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Paris Port Dover Pipe Band gear up for the 2nd Annual Big Pipe Dream fundraiser

Courtesy of Big Brothers Big Sisters It’s that time of the year again, time to bring out your inner Scotsman and support two organizations that focus on the development of youth in the community. The Big Pipe Dream fundraiser is deemed as a ‘Plaid Tie Affair’ and features Celtic music, dinner, auctions, and special guest comedian Gord Paynter. This is the second annual event, with the first annual raising $30,000. Both organizations are happy to announce that Scotiabank has come on board once again as the title sponsor. The President of the Paris Port Dover Pipe Band (PPDPB), Gord Black, says “Last year we heard nothing but positive feedback surrounding the event, and we’re very excited to be partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters once again to bring our guests a memorable and enjoyable night out, but more importantly to raise money, so we can continue to support the youth in our communities.” Patti O’Reilly, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Grand Erie, says “The support for the Big Pipe Dream last year was amazing, we’re hoping to build on that

momentum to make this year’s event even more successful than last.” Tickets for the event are still available for one hundred dollars each. There are also a variety of other ways to help with this joint venture such as sponsorships, auction items, and prizes. For information on purchasing tickets or how to help, feel free to contact Gord Black from the PPDPB at 519-443-4420, or Josh Juhlke, the Resource Coordinator at BBBS of Grand Erie, at 519-759-3222. Tickets are also available for purchase at any of the Scotiabank branches located in Simcoe and Brantford. The event is set to take place on February 25th, at the Greens at Renton. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) believes that every child in Brant, Brantford,
