ick Mc Call Volkswagen uncanny memory to detail for all things… be it cars, movies, Is on the Move! books, computers… the guy just
By Dave Scott The look across his face explained how life had been a ride of both highs and lows in the last couple of years… he greeted me like he has done many times before, a big smile, leaning slightly back in his chair… I passed him a coffee and settled in the chair across from him… he thanked me for the coffee… asked how things were… and our conversation was off and running… he knew why I was there, what the centre of our talk would be about, but he still took the time just to chat. Of course I wanted to talk about the changes that had been announced the day before regarding Rick McCall Volkswagen (VW). Rick began by telling me that a deal that had been reached with Demeyere Plymouth Chrysler Jeep to purchase his existing facility; and that he in turn had purchased the building formerly known as Erie Motors; and was about to embark on renovating the newly purchased facility to create the perfect new VW location for Norfolk, Haldimand and Oxford counties. True to his word Rick explained that the new building was much more appropriate for the VW image and with the upcoming renovations at 370 Queensway West the building would fit to the Volkswagen AG’s new world wide standard white frame concept… Rick feels the new look will only add to the prestige of the VW product. Volkswagen has witnessed the growth of Rick McCall VW in Norfolk, Haldimand, and Oxford counties and strongly supports the move to the new facility. The new location also provides a stronger economic base of business stability while offering the same top notch VW products and service. Rick reminded me that the VW name has grown dramatically…
not just in Norfolk, Haldimand, and Oxford… but also on the world scale. VW is now positioned as the third largest and climbing with an increase in worldwide sales of 12.1% in October. For his current location, the deal with Demeyere was a natural fit… Rick has known Doug and Derek Demeyere for a long time. Having this opportunity to help each other was a very good fit for these businessmen, who have long been established in our community. Like Rick said, “This is a win… win situation for both of us!” The conversation continued on and Rick explained that since joining forces with VW, it has been an absolutely great experience. Working with factory reps has been positive; the care Volkswagen displays for their dealers and customers is first rate… and there is a vision in place for the future. With all this taken into consideration, Rick envisions nothing but growth for the dealership. I asked Rick how his business partner, VP Ron Weiler felt about the change. He told me, Ron is well versed in the VW product and that Ron’s fourteen years with VW is a strength that Rick believes in… Ron is all for the change… I thanked Rick for his time and headed over to Ron’s office to get his thoughts on the new location. Ron looked relaxed as I walked in… he is forever working the phone or computer and it is easy to see this guy can multi-task with the best of them… but like always he stops what he is doing and makes time for the Hub. There are a couple of traits I have become accustomed to in dealing with Ron. There is his wicked sense of humour and his

seems to never forget. I ask about the big changes… and Ron grins… self-assured and ready for the challenge, his expression says it all. With fourteen years with Volkswagen under his belt, he understands what needs to be done… how it needs to be done… and how quickly he and Rick will get it done. “The wheels are already in motion” he tells me. He quickly points out that Rick has already set a high standard for the dealership. With the move and the facility renovations the new dealership will be world class. Ron said that these are exciting times for VW worldwide as well as here in Norfolk, Haldimand and Oxford counties. He pointed out that he is very grateful to Rick for helping develop a strong brand. Ron speaks the media language well, offering up stats and numbers that support his case… he says all the right things… and if it was anyone else I would wonder… but you know ever since Ron joined forces with Rick and I began stopping in… I have learned more about VW from Ron than anyone else… the guy knows the product inside and out… you can tell this is where he wants to be and what he wants to be doing. I guess I could spend more time going over the details of the deal… but why? It is done… Rick and Ron are hard at work starting the renovations (to open February 2012) at 370 Queensway West, preparing to provide a state of the art VW facility for their state of the art cars. As I left the dealership that morning I could not help but think of all the changes Rick had gone through in last the few years… he, at some points has looked exhausted, worried, stressed… but you have got to admire the man for never

giving up, for standing tall, dealing with adversity, for always believing he and his staff could do it… for bringing in a VW expert (Ron) and now taking the VW brand to new heights. Did I mention his KIA dealership in Port Dover? Lets save that for another day!
Press Release: Rick Mccall Volkswagen, the regional dealer, is pleased to announce their upcoming move to 370 Queensway West, the former Simcoe Chrysler facility. After long consultation with Volkswagen, Architects and Contractors the location was selected to be renovated to Volkswagen AG's new worldwide standard white frame concept. The team at Rick Mccall Volkswagen is excited to see the new facility begin to take shape in the near future and is hoping to have the move completed by February 1st 2012. Rick McCall is commented as saying "I am personally pleased to, once again, invest in Simcoe and Norfolk County and look forward to providing another great facility to care for our friends and customers needs for years to come". "Volkswagen is well on it’s way to achieving it's goal of being the number one automaker on the planet and has announced that it has achieved number three on the JD Power Customer Retail Experience Study for Canada; we are extremely proud to be Norfolk, Haldimand and Oxford county's dealer for these fine products". Demeyere Chrysler will be moving to Rick Mccall Volkswagen's current facility at 144 Queensway East. This move marks all the New Car franchise dealers in Simcoe being located on the Queensway and completes turning Queensway to the Automotive Mile of Norfolk County. Both Dealers are equally excited to greet their existing customers and new guests to their respective new facilities, in the New Year.

Touch of Snow
By Dave Scott What is it about the first dusting of snow? Last Friday morning as I made my way to the kitchen I glanced out the front window… and there was that light layer of snow… not enough to stay for the day… but just a bit… a little smile crossed my face… I get that melancholy feeling of ‘first snows’ gone past… I knew that my kids would be

Sure enough the site of the snow seemed to energize the kids… suddenly packing lunches and getting ready for school seemed like less of a chore than usual… and we all seemed to get out the door ahead of time for a change… of course that
is a good thing because with winter driving we all need a little more time on the roads. By the end of the day, the snow was all but gone… but who knows what tomorrow will bring… maybe a snow day!

Temperatures are dropping, toques, scarves, boots, winter coats and mittens all need to be pulled out and made ready for the days ahead. The crisp cool morning air is delightful to the senses… for some reason everything just seems extra fresh… with that first little bit of snow.

Courtesy of GEDSB Norfolk County has a team of students that program robots! The Elgin Ave. Steel Eagles team took their robot to the Halton Regional Qualifier Tournament, in Oakville and competed against 23 other teams from schools and community groups in southern Ontario. Across Ontario over 300 teams have competed in various tournaments, held by FIRST Robotic Canada (FRC) and hosted an army of volunteers. These teams join a movement around the world, involving over 171,000 students in 50 countries, inspiring young people to pursue further studies and careers in the field of science, technology and engineering. This is the rookie year, and first tournament for the Elgin Steel Eagles. The team finished 15th in a very impressive field of schools, including teams from Ridley College, Tomkin and other schools with science specialties. Although the team did not win any trophies, they received many impressive results from the judges across 4 categories. In the final matches the Steel Eagles provided a lot of excitement and came as close as could be, just missing the targets. The town, county and school board can be very proud of the hard working, supportive and respectful performance, along with their robotic skills, shown by the Steel Eagles in the Halton Tournament. Many thanks to the local sponsors, who made the whole tournament

Any schools or groups interested in starting up a team in May, for next September, please contact Dave Wilson at Elgin Ave. Public School for help in registering and applying for a grant to help with the costs. FIRST Robotics Canada, a registered charity, started the FIRST Lego League in Canada in 2003 and has been inspiring high school and elementary school students through opportunities for the students to work in teams, to build robots and take part in tournaments with onfield competitions. In April 2010, the province of Ontario announced that it would make a grant of $3 million to FIRST Robotics Canada to offer its programs to schools across Ontario. This money is now available, in single team amounts, to schools wanting to start Robot Teams. when we left a snack for him to have and also the front door was left unlocked because we had no chimney for him to come down!! It was also a time when many homes had one Santa since the other one was overseas. Remember too, the hours spent trying to find the tree light that was really burned out since the whole string went out when one bulb was out. Now, bringing the season for us seniors into fast-forward and an up-to-date memory bank! ’Tis the season of bright lights, inside and outside; Christmas trees, that do not drop their needles; and wonderful music. It is so remarkable about the
’Tis The Season
The title has probably started the senior reader to hum or sing the rest of this lovely Christmas song! And, also started the ‘memory bank’ that every senior has for this season; some of the recollections are pleasant and warm and bring smiles. There are also those that are too sensitive to talk about. Going back to the time when we wrote a letter to Santa about what he could bring us for Christmas,

music; the words and tunes that are heard once a year are recalled with such ease and accuracy by the memories of seniors. These same seniors have difficulty remembering such things as where they put the car keys and if they gave their neighbour the recipe for plum pudding. The season soon moves into a new year, the decorations and lights are packed away and the month of January 2012 is here. For some it is a time to make ‘New Year’s resolutions’ (resolutions being a list of things to do or intentions). Perhaps for seniors it is more appropriate to use the phase ‘New
Year’s reflections (reflections meaning something to consider, to think about). Reflections start with words and phrases such as, “I really should…”, “One of these days…”, “It really is time that I…” So here is a suggestion. For the next few days or weeks, write down the things you say that start with the words above. Then pick one that seems easy to do and start your reflections for 2012!! Slow and easy is the way for us seniors!
A Happy Festive Season to All!

ome for the Holidays? Whether you’re going across town or across the country, holiday visits to parents and older relatives are a perfect opportunity to assess how they’re doing. Even though they assure relatives and friends that they’re fine, some older adults may be having difficulties in one or more areas of their lives. Some changes, such as appearance, reflexes and physical or mental health, may be obvious. Others may require looking into the refrigerator, the bank account and other aspects of the older person’s life. Keep in mind that issues may be connected, as when physical limitations or lack of transportation make it difficult to shop, cook, clean or visit friends.
Look for these physical and emotional changes: • Changes in functional abilities, including walking and taking care of themselves • Personality changes such as depression or withdrawal • Changes in eating habits, such as weight loss, lack of interest in food or difficulty preparing meals because of physical limitations • Neglecting personal hygiene, resulting in wearing dirty clothes, body odor, bad breath, neglected nails and teeth, sores on the skin • Physical problems such as injury marks resulting from general weakness, forgetfulness or misuse of alcohol or medications • Signs of social isolation because of death or illness of friends or relatives, and inability to get out to be with people • Decreasing or stopping participation in activities that were important such as social groups, dining with friends or attending religious services • Changes in relationship patterns to the point that friends and neighbors have expressed concern • Neglecting the home so it is not as clean and sanitary as in the past; old food in the refrigerator • Forgetfulness resulting in unopened mail, unpaid bills, not filling prescriptions or taking medications as prescribed, missing appointments Discuss these insurance and financial issues: • Mishandling finances, such as not paying bills or paying them more than once; losing, hiding or giving away money or other valuables • Making unusual purchases such as large numbers of magazine subscriptions or increased
purchasing from television advertisements It is never easy to discuss these types of issues, but they are vitally important to the physical health, safety and financial health of your older loved one. If the whole family is together it is the perfect time to bring siblings into the discussion. Aging does not just affect the individual, the aging of the individual affects the family. Many times simply discussing the issue can help the senior to modify their behavior. There are also many resources in the community; meals on wheels, senior support services, CCAC. You can even have a specialist in falls come out to the home and inspect it for possible fall hazards. Companies like Victoria Eldercare have numerous care options to help as well. The main thing to remember is that doing nothing is not an option, and open dialogue with the aging person and taking corrective action is essential. Dr. Bruce Veltri operates Victoria Eldercare, a non-medical home care agency matching exceptional care-givers with elderly seniors, to help them maintain independence and remain safely in their own home. Victoria Eldercare can be contacted by phone, 519-426-7300 or the web-site, www.victoriaeldercare.com.

leep A pnea
By Lyndsey Ross, RRT, BSc. This month I decided to talk about some common questions/myths/ issues that come up with CPAP therapy. Q: How often do I have to clean my CPAP unit & mask? A: The seal on the mask should be cleaned each morning. Due to the natural oils that the body produces during the night, its best to clean the seal daily to make sure the maximum life span is achieved. The best thing to clean the seal with is mild soap (such as liquid hand soap) or CPAP Wipes. Once a week, the humidifier chamber, hose and mask shell and headgear should get cleaned. These items can be cleaned in a sink of mild soapy water, rinsed well and hung to dry. Q: I have experienced a significant weight change, will this have an effect my CPAP? A: Yes. A significant change in weight, up or down, can seriously affect your required CPAP pressure. If your weight change is a decrease, it will likely not ‘cure’ your sleep apnea, however, it may significantly decrease your required pressure. Likewise, a significant weight

increase may render your current pressure ineffective. Q: How often should the parts on my CPAP unit be replaced? A: Filters should be replaced every 3-6 months. Filters are washable once, but generally if they are washed more than once, they will start to deteriorate and but less effective at their job. The CPAP hose and humidifier chamber should be replaced every year. CPAP masks should be replaced every 6-12 months. If you have benefits, your policy will likely cover the replacements, the best thing to do is give your benefit provider a quick call to see if you are covered for replacements. I want to take a few moments to thanks Dave & Monica here at the hub for all the support they have given me over the past year. I would also like to thank my parents for all the support and help they have given me this past year. Finally I would like to thank all my patients, referral sources and readers of my articles for your support over the past year. Your support, patronage and kind words have made this past year wonderful.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas & all the best in the New Year. Please have a safe & happy holiday! Lyndsey Ross, RRT, BSc. Respiratory HomeCare Solutions Simcoe 39 Kent Street North, Unit 2 Simcoe, Ontario p. 519.426.1113 e. simcoe@rhscanada.com

A few weeks ago on a Sunday morning, a small group of runners took to the streets in Port Dover to partake in a nice little 5k run. The weather was slightly cold with a chilly rain… and of course a small touch of wind but that did not deter this group that day… Liana Thompson had posted the run on Facebook in order to help a friend of hers (Ash Walker) who was deployed in August to work in the United Nations Missions
5K
Headquarters in Juba, South Sudan, Africa. Ash Walker loves to run and thought organizing a run with his friends from around the world would be a great way to share his passion. So he asked that on November 27th at 4pm, Greenwich Mean Time (11am here) everyone would go for a run and then send some photos to him… folks in Juba, South Sudan; London, England; Wellington, New Zealand; Kushiro, Japan; Ash did his running in Luxor Egypt, while on a leave; and of course we ran in
Aux. Const. Matt Sutherland (left) and Brad Wiersma at the Real Canadian Super Store (RCSS) Friday November 25th. They kicked off the Auxiliary annual festive food drive, which runs until December 17th at both Sobeys and the RCSS. On opening night they sold 218 boxes of Kraft dinner for $5 raising $1090 for the Simcoe Caring Cupboard.

So here we are, six folks heading out of the Runner’s Den in Dover… camera in hand to grab some photos of Dover landmarks to send to Ash... to show that a little town on the other side of the world appreciates what he is doing, and to show our support. In our group I believe Liana is the only person to have met Ash but the respect of one running community to another is worldwide. Off we went on the run gathering photos, of course at the lighthouse,
the new Port Dover sign on Brant Hill, down to the marina for a shot in front of a tug… and then a coffee shop shot and to wrap it up with, of course a beach photo… it was a fun run… and thanks to those that came out… and to Ash, ‘Take care… and keep running!’

imcoe Extreme
By Dave Scott The all new Simcoe Extreme Volleyball team took the court recently at the OVA (Girls 14U) Provincial Cup Tournament in Hamilton. The first year team of young ladies did well finishing fifth out of nine teams in their first tournament outing. It was reported that the girls worked hard and are hoping to build on the experience. The competition was tough with the Halton Hurricanes finishing first. The teams in the tournament were from all over Southern Ontario… Waterdown, Oakville, Niagara and Hamilton. The team has been working hard since September and are now preparing for the Challenge Cup, which is just a short time away. The girls will play in a number of tournaments over the winter all leading to the Provincial Championship in April and the Nationals in May. Simcoe Extreme wanted to say thanks to all those who have brought this team to life, such as Woodside Greens Golf Course, Imperial Oil Esso, Ontario Provincial Police Association, Rick McCall Volkswagen, Al's Shoes, Country Sports and all of the coaches and parents who volunteer their time. To the Extreme players, ‘Keep working hard… play with pride… and wishing you continued success!’

orfolk Nature otes
By MARG WERDEN Inconspicuous but industrious! Although not as bright and flashy as Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Goldfinches, some of the smaller, duller birds that visit our feeders are my favourites. Among these are the Juncos, Chickadees and Nuthatches. In cold weather, these birds all look more substantial than they really are since they’ve puffed out their feathers for insulation. Redbreasted Nuthatches weigh just .35 oz or 10 grams, while the larger White-breasted Nuthatch is double that weight at .74 oz or 21 grams. Black-capped Chickadees (.39 oz/11 grams) weigh just a gram more than the smaller Nuthatch, while Juncos (.67 oz/19 grams) are just slightly lighter than the White-Breasted Nuthatch. Driving to Simcoe the other day, I saw a Junco sitting on the road and as I approached, it didn’t fly away. I realized that it had probably been hit by a car and was stunned, so I quickly went back to take it out of harm’s way until it recovered. When I picked it up, I could barely feel its weight in my hands. To get an idea of how much these birds weigh, an average paper clip weighs a gram and a loonie weighs 7 grams. Nuthatches are also known as the “upside-down bird” because of their habit of turning sideways and upside down as they forage on tree trunks, probing into bark crevices with their straight, pointed bills. However, they don’t lean against their tails the way Woodpeckers do. Nuthatches are active birds that eat insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp
bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches are gray-blue on the back, with a frosty white face and underparts. The black or gray cap and neck frame the face and make it look like this bird is wearing a hood. The lower belly and under the tail are often chestnut. The largest nuthatch, this is still a small bird with a large head and almost no neck. The tail is very short, and the long, narrow bill is straight or slightly upturned. In winter, White-breasted Nuthatches join foraging flocks of birds that may include Chickadees or Titmice, partly because it makes food easier to find and partly because more birds can keep an eye out for predators. Like Chickadees, White-Breasted Nuthatches may store seeds in the furrows of tree trunks for later in the winter. They typically hide the food by covering it with a piece of bark, lichen, moss, or snow. Red-breasted Nuthatches have very short tails and almost no neck; the body is plump or barrel-chested, and the short wings are very broad. These blue-gray birds have strongly patterned heads: a black cap and stripe through the eye broken up by a white stripe over the eye. The underparts are rich rustycinnamon, paler in females. During nest building, the Redbreasted Nuthatch is aggressive, chasing away other hole-nesting birds such as the House Wren, White-breasted Nuthatch, and Downy Woodpecker, birds that are, on average, larger. The Redbreasted Nuthatch collects resin globules from coniferous trees and plasters them around the entrance of its nest hole. It may carry the resin in its bill or on pieces of bark that it uses as an applicator. The male puts the resin primarily around the outside of the hole while the female puts it around the inside. The resin may help to keep

The nuthatch avoids the resin by diving directly through the hole. At feeders, Nuthatches usually enjoy peanuts, sunflower seeds, and suet. When given the choice they tend to select the heaviest food item available; if these are too large to eat in one piece they typically jam them into bark and then hammer them open.
