By Dave Scott Saturday afternoon was everything you would want in a day… beautiful, warm, and sunny… the kinda’ day where you want to sit on the patio, and enjoy a cold beverage after a round of golf. Speaking of a round of golf, that was exactly what happened up at the Norfolk Golf and Country Club (NGCC). The club hosted a best ball tournament for its members, with the funds raised going towards patio renovations… oh and there was another surprise, before play got under way, Chef William Thompson, who participated on the TV show, Top Chef Canada, was a special guest at the club. He prepared a lunch for

the members and a delicious fourcourse dinner as well. William, who originally hailed from the Caledonia area, talked about the positive experience he had on the show and how from that, many doors have opened for him. He is looking to open his own restaurant in Hamilton down the road.

He told me his passion for cooking started back in high school. He originally intended to be a teacher, but working nights after school at a restaurant, he soon realized that being a chef was his calling.

The tournament this year had 52 players, both men and women, who by all accounts were ready to get out and hit a few balls.

I had not been up to the club in awhile but the course looked fantastic… I caught up with manager, Robert Pryor, who told me a little bit about what has been happening around the club lately… they have great food, squash courts, tennis courts and of course their traditional golf course… Robert explained that the club is semiprivate… but folks can come by and use the facilities for a fee. He suggested that folks stop by and check out the club…

I have to say when I was there over lunch, the atmosphere was relaxed and the members were savouring the delightful food provided by Chef William and preparing for an afternoon of golf…

haring the Cup

By Dave Scott Norfolk was basking in the light of the Stanley Cup last week when it visited Simcoe and Waterford… everyone wanted his or her photo taken with the prize possession of hockey…

There isn’t a child who hasn’t envisioned hoisting the Cup over their head… in our country it is the ultimate sign of achievement… grown men line up to have their photo taken with it… it is by all accounts, how we measure our hockey supremacy.

When John Stevens, Assistant Coach of the LA Kings, and Nelson Emerson, Player Development for LA shared their Cup time with our

community it once again showed the pride and respect these men have for the area they grew up in.

John who toiled for close to 20 years in the American Hockey League (AHL - and is now in the AHL Hall of Fame) as a player and coach, ‘only catching a cup of coffee’ in the NHL as a player and making it to the big leagues as a head coach with the Flyers before moving into an assistant position with the Kings… he has paid his dues and earned the right to have his name engraved on the Cup… I knew John when he attended PDCS for grade nine and ten… back then you just knew he was a good guy… his dedication and work ethic were already prime examples of his character… he was just the type of guy who you always rooted for… so last Monday when I saw him with

the Cup… I have to say, the hair stood up on my arms… it was so cool for me to see such a great guy reach the top… watching someone like John… setting such a great example for kids… and adults… never giving up… and following his dream.

Of course in true John fashion, he thanked everyone and explained how a great colleague like Nelson helped in making the Cup victory come alive…

Speaking of Nelson… he is a former Waterford Minor Hockey player with a distinguished college career followed by a fantastic NHL playing career.

He too is a classy guy… taking the Cup to Waterford for the folks

there, was something he wanted to do… again Nelson demonstrated the strong connection that he has to the very hockey roots where he started.

Did I mention our eight time Stanley Cup winner was also on hand? Red Kelly… Red was an absolute delight.

With every story that Red shares the legend grows… any opportunity to visit with Red and Mrs. Kelly is truly a treat.

Thank you to John and Nelson for taking the time to allow the rest of us to share in your moment… you just knew with these two they would never forget the folks back home.

By Dave Scott I don’t know many folks like Tia… her soul seems to lay open for us to look into… her music is Norfolk… the people, the culture, the history… she has never forgotten her roots… and now she and the Port Dover Lions hope to bring those roots to life…

Devon Otterman With a passion and an ambition to learn, and a great personality that translates well on stage and on screen, no wonder with all that, Devon has become an asset to the industry!

Devon showed an interest in ‘acting and singing’ from a very young age. He would amaze us all with his renditions of the movie or song he was interested in at that time. Later, when he pursued acting, and singing, and his interests in drums and guitar, he would become so involved in his productions that you could ‘feel’ who he was portraying on stage or express in the music he played or sang. Devon being such a shy child, soon found the stage to be a ‘comfort zone’ for him.

After a couple of years, several productions and under the watchful eye of one of his artistic directors, Devon was advised to further his career, both on stage and in singing. He obtained a talent agent, and began vocals with Ms. Tia McGraff and over the span of 6 years, Devon has accomplished a lot, from theatre,

With all this going on he still manages to keep very good grades and fills any other time with extra curricular activities, such as writing short stories, filming, swimming, golf, and indoor rock climbing. Just a few of the things he enjoys with friends and family. Devon is committed and knowledgeable about his ‘career’ choices. As a youth, acting is already in his blood and with the commitment of his family, friends and his capabilities we’ll see him succeed.

Tia has added something a little different to the show, she has invited four young local performers to take part, Kristien Van Ryssen, Devon Otterman, Jacasta Winter and Jessica Rayner… to spread their wings, enjoy the stage setting, and to gain a wealth of experience… very cool!

Kristien Van Ryssen My name is Kristien Van Ryssen, pronounced (Christian). I was born October 6th, 1997. I have been in love with music ever since I was nine years old. I would listen to a song on the radio and run to the piano and try to figure it out. I also picked up my first guitar around that time. I play the guitar upside down like one of my favourite guitar players, Jimmy Hendrix. People say that

I sound like Amanda Marshall and Janis Joplin. I have fallen in love with the forties to eighties style of music. I am a huge fan of Aerosmith. I have sung for the special education class in my school and have been known to get up in front of the school a couple of times. During the summer, I am a leader at the NYCA summer camp in Port Ryerse and play my guitar and sing for the kids at the camp.

LANDLORD RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURIES ON LEASED PROPERTY

you are injured on rented premises, and the tenant has no insurance, can you the landlord to recover your damages? Just recently, the Ontario Court Ioffpursue Appeal said “yes”. In Taylor v. Allard, the tenant had possession of the home

and the surrounding lot. The agreement between the tenant and the landlord was that the tenant would be responsible for all repair and upkeep to the property.

Prior to the tenant moving in, the landlord had built a fire pit at the rear of the property. The tenant had some guests over and they all spent the evening socializing and drinking around the fire pit. After a certain amount of alcohol was consumed, predictably, a fight broke out. One of the guests moved backwards, stumbled and fell into the fire pit suffering serious burns. He sued the landlord and the tenant for his damages.

At trial, the judge found the drunk plaintiff and the tenant equally responsible for the accident, with no fault being attributed to the landowner. Presumably, the tenant did not have insurance, which means that the plaintiff could not collect the damages ordered by the court from the tenant. The plaintiff appealed the case to the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal reversed the trial judgment and found the landlord and the tenant equally responsible for the plaintiff’s injuries. In doing so, the Court of Appeal found that the landlord’s obligation to maintain and repair the property (as set out under section 8 of the Occupiers Liability Act), supersedes any agreement that the landlord and the tenant may have entered into. In essence, the Court of Appeal’s decision in this case means that a landlord is responsible for the safety of a tenant and his/her guests while on property owned by the landlord. This is so, despite any express agreement between the landlord and the tenant that the tenant will be responsible for maintaining and repairing of the property.

In conclusion, a landlord cannot contract out of his/her obligation to ensure that a rental property is reasonably safe for the tenant and his/her guests. What a landlord can do, is insist that the tenant have his/her own insurance, which means that in cases where both landlord and tenant are found responsible for injuries suffered on the rented premises, the landlord’s insurance only pays for the landlord’s share – and the tenant’s insurance pays for the tenant’s share. If the tenant does not have his/her own insurance, chances are that the landlord’s insurance will have to pay for both the landlord’s and the tenant’s share of fault.

Here are some nice tea recipes to enjoy during our beautiful Norfolk summer.

Due to this summer’s drought conditions, there has been a renewed interest in creating a sustainable landscape with plants that will survive dry periods on their own, without a heavy reliance on supplemental watering, fertilizer and other maintenance tasks. This past July, gardeners have grown weary trying to keep lawns and prized specimens alive through the extended period of dryness and have been seeking solutions.

Here are some key elements to consider: 1. The Lawn Area: The lawn is an important part of any landscape as it provides the background that enhances the overall effect of the home and the various gardens and landscape features. Titanium Tall Fescue is more drought resistant than many other lawn grasses such as the traditional kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Fescue roots penetrate deeper into the soil also are more disease resistant and wear tolerant, making it ideal for heavy foot traffic areas and recreational areas.

2. The Soil: To help plants develop long roots: add organic matter deep into the soil, which helps the plant retain moisture and adds nutrients; plus water for lengthy periods rather than shorter ones so the water can penetrate well into the ground. Also cover the exposed soil with five centimetres of organic mulch (leaves or shredded bark) to conserve moisture.

3. Choosing The Right Plants: Some garden plants have adapted to dry conditions better than others. These generally include plants with long tap roots that can find buried sources of water; succulents that store moisture in their leaves; and still others with silvery foliage to reflect sunlight, a waxy coating to lock in moisture, or woolly leaves that help conserve moisture.

Snags and deadwood provide important habitat, food and shelter for a variety of species.

While “snags” in the garden hose, fishing line, or your child’s hair and “deadwood” in the workplace are all things not looked upon favourably, they are both terms used to describe an important part of a forest.

There are two types of snags in nature: standing, dead or dying trees that are often missing their tops or most of their smaller branches; and, in waterways, trees, branches and other naturally occurring wood found sunken in rivers and streams. Deadwood includes veteran trees, standing dead or dying trees, fallen logs and branches.

In the past, many forests have been cleared of snags and deadwood in an attempt to prevent the spread of forest fires and because dead trees were thought to harbour disease.

However, they are an important component of a healthy forest and contribute to a forest’s biodiversity by providing habitat, shelter and a food source for birds, bats and other mammals, and are especially important for the majority of species in the forest: insects, fungi and lichens. In fact, Keith Kirby, a British forest expert, believes that

deadwood is the richest habitat in a healthy forest.

In heavily populated Europe, where forests are managed to a very high degree, lack of deadwood is one of the key factors in loss of biodiversity. Deadwood is a critical component in the function of a forest and plays five major roles in the ecology of a healthy, natural forest by: • Helping to maintain forest productivity by providing organic matter, moisture, nutrients and regeneration sites for conifers • Providing habitats for animals that live, feed or nest in cavities and for fish and other marine animals that live in the pools created by fallen logs and branches • Supplying a ready food source for beetles, fungi and bacteria that help to recycle the nutrients stored in the wood • Stabilizing slopes and preventing soil erosion during heaving rainfalls • Storing carbon in the long term and helping to mitigate some of the effects of climate change.

In the life cycle of a tree, more species make use of the tree once it begins to die than while it is alive and healthy. The first species to arrive as a tree begins to die are those that are capable of breaking down the tough outer layer that protects the tree’s heartwood.

Among these are the familiar

The spongy decaying wood of a fallen piece of deadwood in the British Columbia rainforest absorbs rainwater, supplies nutrients and provides an elevated platform above the shade of forest floor plants for seedlings that prefer to germinate on logs. In this way, the old wood is recycled as it nourishes the new forest. bracket fungi and some types of bacteria, which make cracks in the outer layer and change the heartwood to make it usable by other feeders. This next wave of attackers includes a number of insects, such as beetles and ants.

As soon as these herbivores arrive, so do their predators. Among the best known of these are the woodpeckers, many of which are highly dependent on deadwood as a food source, especially in winter.

The woodpeckers excavate holes in trees for their nests and vacated holes eventually become home to many other species including owls, flycatchers, creepers, some species of ducks, bats and raccoons.

The tree’s usefulness continues even after it falls over. When a tree falls onto the forest floor, it creates a disturbance that helps some plants to germinate and grow. In the British Columbia rainforest, nursery logs can be nurturing hundreds of conifer seedlings that prefer to germinate on logs.

Deadwood falling into streams and rivers assist in creating gravel bars and pools which reduce water

flow, create fish habitat and provide valuable substrate for algae. These slow-flowing areas also retain up to 70 per cent of litter fall from the forest, thus increasing available nutrients in the water. Studies have shown that pools created by logs and branches provide over 50 per cent of the salmon spawning and rearing habitats in small streams.

Although some people may think a dead tree is unsightly, it can be a beehive of activity for hundreds of species and, whenever safety permits, should be left standing as long as possible. In order to protect a number of endangered species, such as Red-headed Woodpeckers, whose populations are declining in part because of habitat loss, we need to leave deadwood and snags in the forest. Just because a tree is dead does not mean that it is past its usefulness in the forest; in fact, it is only beginning a very important part of its function.

Old Woodhouse Church (the Cradle of Methodism in the Long Point Settlement) and its Cemetery Board will hold their 212th Decoration Day and Memorial Service on Sunday, August 12, at 9:30 am. Guest speaker will be Hon. Walter McLean.

During his distinguished career, Rev. Dr. McLean has served in many capacities – as Minister of Waterloo’s Knox Presbyterian Church where he is currently a Minister in Association; as an Alderman on Waterloo City Council; as a Member of Parliament from 1979-1993; and as a Cabinet Minister in three portfolios – Secretary of State for Canada, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and Minister of Immigration.

For 8 years Dr. McLean was a member of Canada’s Delegation to the United Nations. Early

in his career he was a co-founder of Canadian University Service Overseas (CUSO) and served in West Africa as CUSO’s Nigerian field director.

A co-founder of the Canadian Centennial’s “Miles for Millions Walks” in 1967, he then designed and marketed the province-wide Centennial celebration in Manitoba in 1970 as Executive Director of the Manitoba Centennial Corporation.

He is also a great-great-grandson of Rev. Joseph Messmore, a Wesleyan Methodist itinerant saddlebag preacher who served Woodhouse and the Long Point Settlement Circuit in 1835-36.

The service will be held behind the church, adjacent to the cemetery, weather permitting.

Most years, we provide both sun and shade.

Those who wish to, are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. Additional chairs will be provided from the Sunday School room. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the sanctuary.

A joint service with Port Dover’s Grace Church congregation is planned. Everyone will be most welcome. Everyone who attends is invited to linger, mingle and enjoy light refreshments following the service.

Woodhouse United Church is a very friendly and welcoming little country church located at 2164 Highway 24 South. The congregation looks forward to welcoming a good turnout of friends and families on August 12 to meet Rev. Dr. McLean.
