By Dave Scott I stopped in Dover on Sunday to check out the Port Dover Summer Festival… of course it was probably me that brought the rain as we arrived.

Powell Park was full, with lots of art, clothing, soaps, and knick-knacks… you name it… it was there.

never called so I guess I did not win… but we did get a picture of Randy selling a ticket to Joan Binstead of Dover.

Next up I stopped by the Splash clothing display (only fitting that it was raining) and chatted with owner, Charlene Dawson, who told us that overall it had been a busy weekend.

A local minor sports team, the Meat Wagon Golden Eagles of the Simcoe and District Youth Soccer Club recently competed on a national level in the BMO Team of the Week Contest. Of the 547 teams nominated across Canada, 15 teams were selected as Team of the Week, with the opportunity to compete in a nationwide online voting period from August 1-15th.

Norfolk County’s Golden Eagles finished 6th in that vote. While the team did not finish as the

We did a story a while back about the Turkey Point Mountain Bike Club (you can find it on the newsstand at www.norfolkhub.ca) … and at the time, I thought I should give it a try… loved it!

The trails are beautiful… what a workout… what a blast! Check out the clubs site www.tpmbc.ca. ➤ April 3rd, I weighed in at about 198 pounds… today 173… exercise and proper eating… who knew… thanks to Monica, my wife, for all the encouragement… and to all my swimming and running buddies for their advice and assistance! ➤ I hear a lot of folks saying… well summer is over… come on, there’s still tons of great weather… get out there and enjoy!

Team of the Week Champions, I still believe our experience was amazing, and am grateful that we took advantage of the chance provided to us

by BMO. The Golden Eagles team of 16 young men and ladies, all between the ages of 8 and 11, have been running a used uniform drive this season, to benefit the 600+ students of a World Teacher Aid school in Kenya. To date, they have collected over 400 soccer jerseys, 198 pairs of soccer shorts, 198 pairs of soccer socks, and other gear to donate to this wonderful cause. How can one feel as if our team lost, when they have

gained so much as individuals as a result of this experience? I am sure that if you were to ask the students in Kenya, they would clearly state that the Golden Eagles are winners.

Personally, I am extremely proud of this team’s efforts, and of the support that Norfolk County residents have provided to them during the uniform drive and contest period. There are so many individuals that contributed to the success of the team that all I can say is “Thank you” to each and every one of you.

T

he Insured Annuity is a financial planning strategy designed to increase cash flow to an individual when they’re alive while making sure they have funds to leave a legacy when they die.

This strategy is often recommended in situations where an individual has fixedincome non-registered David Pass, investments (GIC’s). If Financial Advisor the client is spending the annual interest earned, has no intention to access the investment funds while living and intends to gift the funds when they die, then they may want to consider an Insured Annuity.

But what happens if the facts of the case are somewhat different? Can a slight change in assumptions result in a different solution? The answer to that question is “yes”. Let’s understand why by considering the following situation.

Mr. Jones is 70 years of age and a non-smoker.

He has a $1 million GIC earning 5%. When he dies the GIC funds will go to his heirs. At this time the net interest from his GIC plus his other sources of retirement income provide Mr. Jones with the cash flow he wants.

Mr. Jones is also charitably inclined and would like to give more to his favourite charity but he does not want to do this in a way that might impact the $1 million going to his heirs. Is there a way for Mr. Client to maintain what he has today while providing a benefit to his favourite charity?

Annual taxable income @ 5% $50,000 Tax payable @ 45% $22,500 Net income $27,500 Funds to heirs at his death $1,000,000

Option 1 – I nsured A nnuity, a typical approach

Total funds available $1,000,000 Funds used to purchase annuity $1,000,000 Annual annuity income $88,518 Taxable Amount $16,576 Tax payable @ 45% $7,459 Net cash flow before insurance premium $81,059 Annual Life Insurance premium $41,743 Annual net cash flow $39,316 Funds to heirs at his death $1,000,000 If Mr. Jones uses the funds in the GIC to implement the Insured Annuity strategy he will be able to increase his net cash flow from $27,500 to $39,316, an increase of $11,816. Mr. Jones can use this excess cash to make a gift to his favourite charity without impacting the cash flow he wants to maintain. Mr. Jones will also benefit from this structure because the annual gift to the charity will result in a tax benefit that reduces the amount of his tax payable.

Option 2 – I nsured A nnuity, a not so typical approach

Total funds available $1,000,000 Funds used to purchase annuity $854,329 Annual annuity income $75,609 Taxable Amount $14,146 Tax payable @ 45% $6,366 Net cash flow before insurance premium $69,243 Annual Life Insurance premium $41,743 Annual net cash flow $27,500 Funds to heirs at his death $1,000,000

With this option Mr. Jones uses a portion of the funds in the GIC to implement the Insured Annuity strategy. He is able to maintain his net cash of $27,500 but by reducing the annuity purchase price to $854,329 he has freed up $145,671 that he can gift to his favourite charity today and receive the resulting tax benefits.

In this situation there were two effective ways to meet Mr. Jones’ need. It is now up to him to consider the tax consequences of each option and decide whether to benefit the charity over a period of time or with a large, one-time gift.

By MARG WERDEN Learn about geo-caching Although it has been around for several years now, geo-caching continues to attract more and more people who are interested in combining being in the outdoors with a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy. Geo-caching is a combination of hiking, orienteering and going on a treasure hunt. Using a global positioning system (GPS), participants use clues to find caches, which other participants have hidden. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook in which the geo-cacher enters the date they found it and signs it.

On Saturday, When Nature Calls, a local environmental education organization, is holding one of these high-tech scavenger hunts at Hay Creek Conservation Area and is inviting anyone interested in learning about geo-caching to attend. The event begins at 2 p.m.

Ants: small but mighty They’re not my favourite insect, but I have to give ants credit for their intelligence, which is quite astounding when one considers the size of their brains, and their strength. I recently had a demonstration of their abilities when I found a mass of ants on the patio. After returning from his annual Scout canoe trip, my husband had cleaned up the food barrels on

the patio, dumping out the crumbs of food that had accumulated at the bottom. In one barrel, however, some sugar had been spilled and this was also dumped out. Within a very short time, a legion of small red ants was on the job cleaning up the mess. Hundreds of ants were busy ferrying away the bits of food and sugar. They must have thought it was manna dropped from heaven!

How did they find this food so quickly, and, more interesting, how did they communicate this information to each other?

Communication between ants is primarily accomplished through chemicals called pheromones.

A forager who finds food leaves a pheromone trail along the ground on its way to the place it considers its home. This place is typically located through the use of remembered landmarks and the position of the sun as detected by compound eyes. This pheromone trail will be followed by other ants within a short period of time. The trail is further reinforced as it attracts more ants until the food is exhausted. With the food gone, the trail is no longer reinforced and slowly dissipates.

Like all insects, ants have six legs, each with three joints. The strength of an ant’s legs enables it to run very quickly. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse.

Ants can also lift 20 times their own body weight. Despite their small size, an ant brain has about 250,000 brain cells, compared to the approximately billion cells in a human brain. The average life expectancy of an ant is only 45 to

60 days and there are more than 10,000 known species of ants, which live everywhere on earth except in the Arctic and Antarctic regions Ant antennae are used for touch and for their sense of smell. Their large, strong jaws open and shut sideways like a pair of scissors. Adult ants cannot chew and swallow solid food, so they swallow the juice that they squeeze from pieces of food and throw away the dry part that is left over. Ants have two stomachs: one to hold food for itself and the other for food to be shared with other ants.

The ant is one of the most social insects, living in colonies with at least one or more queens, whose job it is to lay eggs, which are looked after by worker ants. Ants are clean and tidy insects and the job of some worker ants is to take garbage out of the colony and deposit it in a special dump. Each colony of ants has its own smell so that intruders can be recognized immediately.

Some birds put ants in their feathers because the formic acid gets rid of the parasites.

Despite how we feel about ants, mostly considering them to be pests, they have a positive effect on the world’s ecosystem, cleaning up debris and droppings from other animals and eating other pests.

Ants also help disperse seeds and help aerate the soil.

Bill Martin

By Dave Scott Bill Martin began training at the Runner’s Den in Port Dover five years ago… and has never looked back. Bill enjoys running and has helped a lot of folks get involved. He knows his stuff when it comes to the sport.

Now about swimming, and getting ready for the Are You Tough Enough? Swim and Run… a 10km swim from Pottahawk to Turkey Point and then a 10km run to Long Point Eco-Adventures… the swim is a whole new challenge for Bill.

Bill explained that as a kid, he had never taken swimming lessons and up until three years ago, it was never something he really thought about doing.

You see, three years ago, Scot Brockbank rented the pool in Simcoe and began training folks for the first ever Pottahawk crossing… at the time Bill thought he would get involved and use the swimming as a good cross-training method… he laughs as he thinks back, remembering how tough it was just completing one length of the pool.

For the last two years, Bill has assisted the swimmers during the event as a guide boat from the safety of a kayak. The first year he thought, they (the swimmers) were crazy… he wondered if they could even do it (the 10km crossing) and was impressed when they did. Year two… he helped from the kayak again… still believing it was something he would never be able to do… but such as life, things change and Bill worked hard in the pool over the winter…

He knew in the back of his mind, that someday he wanted to do a triathlon… the pool training was going well and then in May he began open water training… the progression was coming together… Bill got caught up in the moment and decided that he would do the Port Ryerse to Port Dover swim in late July.

For Bill, the swim would be the indicator that he was ready for the Pottahawk swim. The morning arrived and we headed to the water off of Ryerse… Bill, with his son Curtis as his guide

boat, set his pace for Dover. he could do a 10km swim… to a guy who is now Bill worked hard that day. When he took the last excited about doing the swim and sharing the few strokes reaching Port Dover, his questions experience with his son as his guide… to the were answered… he knew he could do the 10km memories of his parents and his friends that will surely cross his mind during the swim… I have swim. no doubt… when Bill hits the shore in Turkey For Bill, being involved in all of the swims is Point… it will be an emotional one. important… cancer has played a major roll in his life. Taking a Tour

A tour is a planned trip to a special place. It can take one day or many; it can be near or far away. A tour has many advantages including arrangement for transportation, accommodations, meals, and even side trips. It is also a very ‘secure’ way to travel and there is support if one has concerns or problems. Every tour has at least two people, and, it is when travelling with others that

Travelling with others can be very enjoyable. But, it only takes a few to make the trip long, frustrating, and having many persons wishing it was over!! These few are those who forget they are travelling with others; that a tour really becomes a group of persons who are considerate of their fellow travellers and get to know them. One example of getting to know each other is picking up an extra brochure of interest of a fellow traveller.

So as a senior traveller we are all ‘ambassadors of our age group’ and are role models for our fellow travellers, both young and old!

Here are some suggestions from fellow senior travellers: - Set your watch with the others, being late for the bus more than once is a no-no.

- Offer a smile and warm comment to those who are on their first tour.

- Watch that ’your group’ does not ‘take over’ and spoil the tour for others.

- Preparing for, and travelling are tiring, learn to relax and save your

ast month’s article was so well received that I have decided to share a few more care situations involving Victoria Eldercare. These case-studies demonstrate what a non-medical eldercare service can do in various situations.

These are actual clients that we have worked with over the last year and a half.

1.

A housebound young senior with a degenerative brain stem disorder. She is well in all respects except for her balance. Although taking many precautions in the home she still has a very high chance of falling and once fallen she is unable to get up off the ground. Her husband is an active senior.

This younger senior couple had established a very elaborate system, where the husband was always within one hour of the home and in constant contact with his wife. If she fell she

would never be on the ground longer that an hour and her husband could be home to help her up. This system worked fine until he needed to go on a day trip that would have him more than three hours away and gone a minimum of 8 hours from the home. Victoria Eldercare matched a caregiver who spent the 8 hours at the home while the husband was away. Peace of mind and the day was enjoyable for both husband and wife.

2. An older senior with Alzheimer’s disease living alone in her own home. This lady was very lonely and was becoming depressed, but because she had a cat, she did not want to move to a retirement home. Although frustrated, her daughters were respectful of her wishes and looked to Victoria Eldercare for assistance.

The main priority was to find amongst our staff a PSW that not only would be a good match for the client but also one that really liked cats. Our caregiver came into the home every day for four hours, her duties included meal preparation, monitoring of medication and of course, feeding the cat. As our senior client was been cared for at home, our manager, Phillip Poss, was busy looking for a retirement home that our client could go to that would allow her to bring her cat.

Our client has now successfully transitioned to that retirement home and has thrived in her new environment with her favourite feline friend by her side.

3. An eighty year old retired businessman, a widower for over a decade was living very successfully on his own in a lakeside home.

His two daughters live in Toronto and Windsor.

While visiting they noticed that he was losing weight quite rapidly and were concerned. Once medical tests confirmed there was no health problem it was determined that this gentlemen had simply lost interest in cooking and was not eating regular meals. The daughters contacted Victoria Eldercare for assistance.

Victoria Eldercare placed a Personal Support Worker in the home from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. During this time a large lunch was prepared together with the client, he actually began to enjoy cooking again with assistance, at the same time an evening meal was prepared and placed in the fridge for later. Our caregiver would take the client shopping for groceries as well during this time when necessary. This arrangement worked very well for many months, the client has now moved to the Windsor area to be closer to his daughter.

This is normal and should happen, to a certain extent. However, in someone who has Obstructive Sleep Apnea, the muscles relax too much, to the point that relaxed muscles block off the airway which is what causes them to stop breathing.

When this happens, the blood oxygen level will drop and the brain will wake up. When someone suffers from sleep apnea this cycle happens all night long, where the

airway is blocked, the oxygen drops and the brain wakes up, over and over.

How do I treat it? The gold standard of treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is called, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or a CPAP machine. A CPAP machine will provide pressurized room air, through the machine to a mask via a hose, that acts as a stent by using the pressurized air to keep the airway open and clear. Each person’s Sleep Apnea is different and

the setting of their CPAP machine must be prescribed by a Sleep Physician . With a CPAP machine the airway is being kept open and someone with Sleep Apnea will not stop breathing and will reach deep sleep with no problems!

ardinal Muffler Opens Second shop in Tillsonburg

By Dave Scott I was in Tillsonburg for a meeting last week and as I left, I spotted the new Cardinal Muffler Shop on Oxford Street… so I stopped into to say hi to Jarrod (one of the owners).

He told me the new shop was doing well! He and his partners had purchased the building last year and set to work fixing it up for their second Cardinal Muffler Shop. The building was an old gas station that had been closed since 1984… so you know they had some major renovations to do.

If you are a Cancer Patient, survivor or caregiver, the Canadian Cancer Society is starting a Support Group in the Fall.

The group will be gathering on the Third Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Library in Simcoe.

This group will offer information and support to cancer patients and their Loved Ones.

Courtesy of the Port Dover Yacht Club Sailing School The Port Dover Yacht Club Sailing School is recognizing the efforts of about 30 volunteers who have helped launch and then build the organization over the past four years.

“It’s amazing that from a germ of an idea five years ago, we’ve grown to an organization with a small fleet of sailing dinghies and dozens of students,” said Lisa Marr, volunteer program coordinator.

The not-for-profit sailing school experienced an 18 per cent increase in registrations this year.

It has received three critical Ontario Trillium Foundation grants over the past three years since it started to offer sailing courses to youth.

These grants plus another generous grant from the Rotary Club of Simcoe and several other key sponsors enabled the organization to purchase 12 small sailing dinghies, a floating dock and two inflatable coach boats as well as fencing and other equipment necessary to run the school.

But Marr said none of this would be possible without the volunteers who shouldered a great of work as the school initially was established at the Norfolk Conservation Area in Port Ryerse then moved to the Port Dover Harbour Marina.

Community support came early on from Dave Scott at the Norfolk Youth and Children’s Association, the Port Dover Lions Club, the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, the Port Dover Racing Division, and of course, the host, the Port Dover Yacht Club.

special is its community support and partnerships including members of its own steering committee as well as a broad base of support throughout the yacht club members.

Volunteers are also particularly proud of the sailing school’s sponsorship program which helps send financially disadvantaged youth from various parts of the county to sailing school.

“There’s really no other way an organization as small as we are could do this without widespread support from literally everyone,” she said.

“However, our secret to success is a steering committee and volunteers with expertise in everything from fibreglass boat repair to engineering to governance and accounting acumen. Honestly, we just lucked out.”

The volunteers are being recognized for the first time on Saturday, August 27.

The charity event started as a modest festival 17 years ago with a few musicians. "Over the years, though, it has grown into a major ongoing event attracting hundreds of people from near and

far," said Mary Elgersma, Eaglesmith's manager.

"Proceeds from the event have supported a number of groups and charities, including The Equestrian Association for the Disabled, Fur and Feather Wildlife Centre, Catfish Creek Conservation Authority and Long Point Basin Land Trust."

"We are excited to have been a charity partner of the event over the last few years," added Beck.

"Not only have contributions from the Picnic supported our Land Trust species at risk projects and the creation of new nature reserves, the event provides a great opportunity for people to discuss conservation issues and ways to protect the environment. It's a great opportunity to enjoy music and share stories about nature and the area."
