Myoldestmemoryisthesmellofburning leavesupanddownSt.GeorgeStreetinPort Dover.AsIdeliveredthelocaldailynewspaper, theoldfellaswouldberakingandburningat theedgeoftheroad.Iswear,nowadays,when Idrivedownthatstreetinthefall,Istillsmell thoseleaves.
Anotherthoughtthatcamewiththeleaveswas draggingoutthehockeyequipmentforanother season.Standingbesidethefurnaceonthose cooldarkmornings,warmingupforthewalkupSt.Patricktotheoldrink.Walkingwithhalf yourgearon,listeningtothewindworkingits waythroughtheleaves.Hustlingalong,
hopingtoleavethateeriefeelingasyouhurried totherink.
Ofcourse,byHalloween,mostoftheleaves wereontheground,andyoucouldseekids' bootsswishingalongpeople'slawnsasthey madetheirwaytothedoorforatreat.
Asayoungman,Iremembergoingfora breathtakingfallpaddle.Itmadeyou understandthetruebeautyoftheshoreline! Justtositafloatandbelostinthemoment.
Trail-runninginthefallwithflashesofbeauty whiskingbyasyourstepstouchedonthefallen leaves.Allheightenedbythemorningsun breakingthroughtheremainingleaves.A fulfillingtimetobealive.

Growingup,Icoachedmanydifferentsports, agegroupsandgenders.Hockey,baseball, basketball,swimming,trailrunning,kayaking, anddaycampsattheNYCA.
Ihaveeasilyputinmy10,000hoursoflearning aboutkidsandadults,andIdiscoveredthatwe alllackself-confidenceinonewayoranother. ItcanbeourAchilles'heelandbreakusatsome point.
Thebestpartaboutkidsistheycanbounceback aftertryingonceandnotsucceeding.Theymay bealittledown,butwithabitof encouragement,theywilltryagain,andagain, andagainuntiltheyachievetheirgoalormove ontosomethingelse.
Thepointisthattheydidnotlimitthemselves. Theymayhavefoundanotherwaytoaccomplish itandaskedforhelp,butforthemostpart,they hadenoughself-confidencetocontinue.Family, friends,coaches,andpositiveinfluences reinforcedself-confidenceintheirlives.
Asadults,weareoftenafraidtofailatanewskill. Wedon'twanttobeembarrassedorlaughedat, andweputupawallthatwillinsulateusfrom anychallenges.
Let'ssayyoutrysomethingnewasanadult,and itdoesnotgoasplanned.Thereisagood chanceyouwillwalkaway,saying,"Itwasn'tfor me."
Asadults,ourconfidenceseemstoerodewith age.Whenweshouldbefeelingstronger knowingwhoweareasaperson,wesometimes feelweakandunsureofourownconfidence. Whichisunderstandable.
Everyoneofuslacksconfidenceatsomepoint inourlives.Wemayhaveexperienced somethingdevastating,likelosingajob,an accident,trauma,mentalhealthissues,orfamily loss.
Inthesemoments,weneedtofindthat remainingounceofself-confidencetorebuild whoweare.Itisnevereasy,andtheremaybe setbacksandemotionaldoubt.Digdowntothat childwhoonlyknewtokeeptryingandnever giveup,whosmiledattheadversityofthat momentandgrewfromittobestronger.Think ofthefolkswhohelpedbuildthatchild's confidence,andrememberthatthosesamefolks stillbelieveinyouandhaveyourback.

IcouldsayIwasarunnerinmyday.Byalllogic andbyallevidence,mydayisover.ButIkeepon keepingon.Ihavecompetedinmanysportsover mylifetime,butrunninghasbeenbyfarthemost enduringoverall.Ihavewonawardsintrack,road running,cross-countryandtrailraces,takingpart ineventsfrom800muptotendays.Running raceswastheperfectoutletformycompetitive spirit.Alongtheway,Imetandenjoyedthe companyofmanyrunners.Somehavebecome myclosefriends.Mostpeoplewhoknowme wouldsayrunningispartofmyidentity.Foritall, Iamextremelygrateful.
Yetnow,mykneesdon'twork,andIcanno longerrun.ButIstillhaveplanstoenterraces. Theyhavetobeverylong,asIcannolonger makethecut-offtimesforanyracelessthan100 miles.IenjoyedrunningmorethanIenjoyed walking.Italwaysfeltsmootherandmore exhilarating.Iseldomhavecompanyduringmy long,dailywalks.Althoughthatisfine,it'snotas muchfunasagoodrunwithothers.
Lastyear,myfriendJoeandIdroveto TennesseetotakepartinARaceForTheAges. Forthatevent,eachcompetitorisallottedthe numberofhoursequaltotheiragetocomplete asmanylapsastheycanonameasuredonemileloop.EveryonefinishesatnoononLabor Day.So,forexample,Ibegan78hoursbefore thedeadline.Theideabehindthisuniqueevent istogiveolderrunnersanopportunityto competeagainstyoungerathletesandstillhave achancetowin.Therace'sall-timebestof230 milesisheldbyamanwhowas73atthetime. Ithasbecomeagatheringplaceforsomeofthe greatpioneerultrarunners,alongwithmany others,forannualget-togethers.JoeandIplan toreturnnextyear.
