Webothmarvelledattheamazingathletics wehaveseenovertheyears,atthetriumphs andtragediestheworldhaswitnessed.

IaskedBradenabouthismostsignificant memory.HevividlyrememberedDonovan Baileywinningthe100-metregoldforCanada inAtlantain1996,settingaworldrecordof 9.84seconds.

JusthearingBradendescribeit,seeinghis smileandexcitementasthememorycame backtolife,remindedmehowimportant

Myfellow Hub writerCharlieUpshawdroveto Montrealin1976towatchtheOlympics.He sleptinhiscarjusttobethere.Itwasacritical momentforhimthatfosteredhisrunning career.Ajourneythateventuallyledtohim representingCanadaina24-hourrace.

Myloveofallthingssportsalsogoesbackto the'76MontrealOlympicGames.

Thatsummer,whilethegameswereon,I spentthedaysatmyfriend'shousewatching withanintensityIdidn'tyetunderstand.Iwas gluedtothesetasthedramaunfolded.A differentsporteveryday,sportsIneverknew existed.Thinking,whattheheckisa steeplechase?Witnessingthefirstperfect10 ingymnasticsbyNadiaComaneci.Somuch wasnewtome,andIwantedtoseeitall!

Duringbreaksinevents,wewouldgointothe backyardandpractisehighjumping.There wasanoldmattressandamakeshiftpoleand stands…oh,whatfun!!

Agrey,wetskyhungovertheOlympic stadiumonthesecondlastdayofthegames. Themen'shighjumpwastheday'spremier event,andCanada'smedalhopewasGregJoy. HewasupagainstAmericanhighjumphero DwightStones.

WitheveryjumpJoyattempted,youcould feelyourbackarchtryingtowillthe Canadianoverthebar!

OlympicMoment

The suspense builtwith eachleap, jump,or

twitchofthebar. Itfeltlikethe barwasfallinginslowmotionwhen therewasamiss.Iwashookedonall thelivedrama,thephysicalstrength, andthementalfocusofthese athletes,aswellastheroarand energyofthecrowd.

ItfinallyboileddowntoStones,Joy andJacekWszołafromPoland. Wszołatookthegold,andGregJoy tookthesilver,beatingDwight Stones,whotookthebronze.

ThoseMontrealOlympicswerethe firsttimeIunderstoodmytruelove forsportsoutsideofhockey.The cause-and-effectofthatdayinspired metopursuedistancerunning,which wasastrengthofmineforyearsto come.

Encourageyourkidstowatchthese incredibleathletes.Thevaluecould lastalifetimeandhelpthem understandtheirpotential!

InearlySeptemberlastyear,Ibeganastreakof purposefulwalkingeveryday,aregimenthat continuedforovereightmonths.Ineverdidless thanonehourinaday.Inmid-May,Idroveto NewJerseyonmyowntoparticipateinthe Quadzilla,oneoftheoptionsatmyfavourite race,ThreeDaysattheFair.Itentailed completing50kmeachdayforfourconsecutive days.

Theninemonthsoftraininghavebeen preparationformynextrace,tendaysonthe indoortrackatthePettitNationalIceCenterin Milwaukee,Wisconsin.TheCenterhastwo hockeyrinks,a400miceoval,thetraining locationfortheU.S.Olympicspeedskatingteam, andathree-lanetrackaroundtheperimeter.

Ten-dayracesarethelongestofficially sanctionedfixed-timeraces.Fiveyearsago,I tookpartinaten-dayrace,aone-timespecial eventatThreeDaysattheFair.My710kmthen isstillthefifth-bestdistanceintheworldalltimeforM70-74.TheslowerIget,thefurtherI havetogoinordertoremaincompetitive. Whentheopportunitypresenteditselftotryten daysagain,IrealizedthatIwaseagertotry.I learnedatthebeginningofSeptemberlastyear, whileatARacefortheAgesinTennessee,that planninghadbegun.Whentheracewas officiallyannounced,Isignedup. Itisverydifficultformetopredictwhatwill happenthistimecomparedtomyprevious experience.

Fiveyearsago,Iwasdoingalotofrunning, althoughnotveryquickly.Now,Ihavestopped runningcompletely.Itisnotarecommended activityformytwofullkneereplacements,andI nowseemtohavegreatdifficultymechanically whenItrytorunanyway.So,Ican’tcomparemy trainingtimesnowtomytimesthen;thenormal wayIwouldhavededucedmyrelativefitness andpreparednessnow,ascomparedto2019. Also,thisraceisindoorsinaclimate-controlled environment.Therearedefinitelysome advantages.Iwon’thavetoendureanyofthe rain,thunderstormsandextremelywetcourse conditionsthatplaguedtheNewJerseyrace.My shoesandclothingwillstaydry.NorwillIhave totoleratetheblazingsunandextremeheatthat occurredsomedays.

However,fromamentalpointofview,allmylife Ihavepreferredtobeoutdoors.Ithinkmy favouritetimeinmulti-dayracesisbeingouton thecourseasthedayslowlybreaks,withthe birdsbeginningtosingandmorelightinthesky witheachloop.Theintensityofthelightinthe arenawillalwaysbethesame.WillIevencare whetheritisdayornight?Itrynottothink aboutthefactthatIwillbegivinguptendaysof primesummertime.

AnotherunknownishowIwillreacttothefood offered.Theracewillprovidethreemealsper dayatsettimesandtherewillbeanaidstation besidethetrack.Idonotknowwhatwillbe offered.Itisquitelikelythattherewillbesome

Iamhopefulthatitwillnotbetoochaoticand thatIwillbeabletogetsomequalitysleep. Thatisabsolutelyessentialforgettingabitof recoveryeachday.Ihavetobeabletofigure outasuccessfulsleepstrategy,orIwillsimply deteriorateasthedayspass.Anoptioncouldbe tosleepinthespacenearthechairandtable areaassignedtoeachrunnerbythetrack.ButI don’tthinkthatwillbeaworkablesolution becauseofthenoise(ongoingactivitieswill includetheraceitself,hockeygamesand skatingpractices),theconstantlightandthe cold.

Yes,thecold.Thetemperatureinthe competitionareaofthefacilityissetbetween 50and55degreesFahrenheit.Thatwillbetoo coldforsleepingforme.Iamtakingsomecool-

weatherrunninggearandawinterjacket becauseIdon’tknowhowcoldIwillfeeleven whenI’monthetrack.

Lastly,itwillbearaceundertakenwithnocrew. AsIhavereportedinpastarticles,inmymultidayeffortsIhavebeenthebeneficiaryofa brilliantcrew.Manypeopleatraceshave commentedabouthowamazingmyfriendsMac, SandyandSteveare.Thisindooricerinkvenueis noplaceforsuchacrewtobestandingaround forlongperiodsoftime.Idon’twanttolosemy friends!WhenIcompletedtherecentQuadzilla,I diditwithnocrew,myfirsttimeeverinamultiday.IwantedtoseehowIwouldmanageonmy own.Althoughitwasamucheasiereventthan theTenDaywillbe,IwashappywithhowI lookedaftermyself.

Thelong-awaitedsummertimebringsfuninthe suntomany.Forothers,especiallythevery young,theaged,ortheunwell,theheatand humidityoftheseasoncanbringamyriadof healthchallenges.Thistimeofyear,manymay feelunwell,easilyoverheated,andfatigued insteadofenjoyingtheactivities,the temperatures,andthelongdays.Heatexhaustion andheatstrokeareseriousmedicalconcernsthat requiremedicalattentiontopreventpotentially serioushealthproblems.
