Ijumpedoutunderthreethousandfeet,Gingerfollowed.ThelastIheardbefore thiswasLeonardaskingandhelpingMartintocontroltherudderpedals,lessthan aminutelatertheycrashed,lightinguptheskywiththeexplosion.Martinand LeonardareburiedatSage,acemeteryontheroadtoWilhelmshaven,whichIhave visited.IowemylifetoMartinafineRhodesian.

Iwascapturedaboutfivehourslater,theusualinterrogation,andthefirstofmany camps,VIIA.IescapedfromhereinJuly'42byclimbingthewirebetweentwo sentryboxes,aidedbypouringrainwhichdeadenedsoundandcausedthe patrollingsentrytoshelterunderabox,allowingmetoclimboverbetweenthetwo. Isleptwellthelasttwonights,muchmore soundlythanusual.IrealizedthatIhadnoteaten anymeatforfivedays,notpartofaplan,butjust whathappened.Iwonderediftherecouldbeany connection.BecauseIhaveabitofanobsession with6dayraces,andwithtryingtounlockthe secretsofthemassivepuzzleofsuccessinsuch long-distanceevents,Iamalwaysthinkingabout newwaystoachieveanyincremental improvements.Themostimportanttoolfor recoveryfromseriousexerciseissleep.Itismore impactfulthanfoodoranyspecialgimmicks.So anythingthatmightimprovethequalityofmy sleepisworthyofinvestigation.Inmycase, becauseofmykneeissuesandmyage,Icertainly don’tsleepasdeeplyorassteadilyasIdidwhen Iwasyounger.

Iftherecouldbeaconnectionbetweenmydiet andmysleepingpattern,Iwanttoexploreit.This interest,coupledwiththefactthatIamnow tryingtobecomelessresistanttochangeand moreintoviewingchangeasanopportunity,is leadingmetoexplorewhatalteringmyfood choiceshastooffer.Thegoalsofanychangeare two-fold:one,toimprovemyhealthand,two,to getmemoremilesat6DaysattheFair,myannual eventeachMay.

Iambeginningwithtwoquestions:Canadopting amorevegetariandietleadtobettersleep?Canit leadtolessinflammationinmybody?

AmIsleepingwellenoughtofeelandperformmy besteveryday?I’mnotreallysure,butIhavethe

impressionthatmysleepistoointerruptedto beofmaximumbenefit.Ioftenwakeupseveral timesanightandIalsoremembermydreamsin greatdetail.PerhapsthatisasignthatIamnot gettingenoughdeepsleep.Idon’twanttobe sleep-deprivedbecauseofitsdetrimental effectsonmymentalhealth,physicalhealthand recoveryfromdailyworkouts.

Plant-baseddietsarehighincomplex carbohydrates,includingfibreandisoflavones (compoundswithantioxidantandantiinflammatoryproperties),whichmayhelpin gettingqualitysleep.Greaterfibreintakeresults inmoretimespentinthestageofdeepsleep. Deepsleepiskeybecausethatisthetimewhen growthhormoneisreleasedinthebody.This stimulatesmusclegrowthandrepair,bone buildingandfatburning.Carbohydratessuchas sweetpotatoes,brownriceandoatmeal stimulatethereleaseofserotonin,whichhelps withsleepingwell.Serotoninisusedbythe bodytosynthesizemelatonin,ahormonethe bodyreleasesinresponsetochangesinlight. Fattyfoods,includingmeat,takelongerforthe bodytodigest.Thiscanbeaproblemsince digestionslowsbyupto50percentwhenyou sleep.

Itseemsthattheanswertothefirstquestionis thatpossiblyamorevegetariandietcanleadto bettersleep.

Inflammationcanbeexacerbatedbynotgetting enoughsleep,increasinghealthrisks. Consistentlygettingsufficientsleepisa significantfactorinlongerlifespans.Vegetarian dietshavebeenlinkedtolowerlevelsof inflammation,soifyouhaveachyjointsand musclesthatcauseyoudiscomfortandinterrupt yoursleep,switchingtoplant-basedeating mightimproveyoursymptoms.Inaddition, therearebenefitstoreducinginflammationthat exceedsimplythediscomfortofaches.Too muchinflammationinyourbodyisharmfuland cancausearthritis,heartproblemsand inflammatoryboweldisease.Foodsthat aggravateinflammationincludeanythingfried, whitebread,pastries,sugarydrinks,redmeat, lardandmargarine.AlreadyIrarelyhaveanyof these.

IcantellIhaveexcessinflammationinmybody, particularlyshowinginmylowerlegsafter

beingonmyfeetforalongtime.Iwillonly knowifadoptingamoreplant-baseddietcan haveapositiveeffectbytryingit.Ifsuccessful, itwouldbeofsignificantbenefittome physicallyandmentally.Mydinnersduring thistimeofexperimentationaregoingtobe saladwitharotationofspaghettiwith meatlesssauce,salmonwithbrownrice, chickenwithbrownriceandsomevegetarian pies.IpurchasethedeliciouspiesfromLee Annatherterrificnewgourmetgroceryshop, DoverMercantile(313MainSt.indowntown PortDover).IfIfeellikesomevariety,I’llmake vegetarianchili.We’llseehowitgoes.Iwill monitormysleep,inflammationandenergy.
