Isleptwellthelasttwonights,muchmore soundlythanusual.IrealizedthatIhadnoteaten anymeatforfivedays,notpartofaplan,butjust whathappened.Iwonderediftherecouldbeany connection.BecauseIhaveabitofanobsession with6dayraces,andwithtryingtounlockthe secretsofthemassivepuzzleofsuccessinsuch long-distanceevents,Iamalwaysthinkingabout newwaystoachieveanyincremental improvements.Themostimportanttoolfor recoveryfromseriousexerciseissleep.Itismore impactfulthanfoodoranyspecialgimmicks.So anythingthatmightimprovethequalityofmy sleepisworthyofinvestigation.Inmycase, becauseofmykneeissuesandmyage,Icertainly don’tsleepasdeeplyorassteadilyasIdidwhen Iwasyounger.

AmIsleepingwellenoughtofeelandperformmy besteveryday?I’mnotreallysure,butIhavethe
impressionthatmysleepistoointerruptedto beofmaximumbenefit.Ioftenwakeupseveral timesanightandIalsoremembermydreamsin greatdetail.PerhapsthatisasignthatIamnot gettingenoughdeepsleep.Idon’twanttobe sleep-deprivedbecauseofitsdetrimental effectsonmymentalhealth,physicalhealthand recoveryfromdailyworkouts.
Plant-baseddietsarehighincomplex carbohydrates,includingfibreandisoflavones (compoundswithantioxidantandantiinflammatoryproperties),whichmayhelpin gettingqualitysleep.Greaterfibreintakeresults inmoretimespentinthestageofdeepsleep.
