“I Want To Ride My Bicycle…”

What pops into your mind when you think of cycling? Maybe warm, childhood memories of riding with friends around the neighbourhood? Those first experiences of independence and freedom on your first, very own bicycle? Commuting to school or work? Scenic rides in the countryside? Or are you wishing that you had time and energy to start or get back into cycling? Perhaps it is simply a wonderful way to clear your mind and energize. In this time of lessening Covid 19 restrictions, and with the promise of warmer and longer days ahead, many of us would like to get back into shape, get outdoors and reconnect with friends. Never has there been a better time to dig out that bicycle. Or, if you don’t already own a road bike, why not consider buying one, now that the “pandemic bike shortage” of 2021 appears to be almost over? So, where to start?

Joining a cycling club can make cycling even more enjoyable, and can offer many benefits: meeting others with similar interests and goals, having an opportunity to learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment, and improving your fitness through low impact exercise. This can all be done while exploring our beautiful, quiet, Norfolk County roads guided by an experienced ride leader. All in all, it is a comparatively inexpensive form of exercise that will give you a sense of wellbeing and accomplishment. Silver Spokes Cycling Club is a local recreational road cycling club established in 1939 by former Olympian, Albert Coulier Schelstraete of La Salette. The club offers organized rides throughout the week for all levels of ability, from beginners and those interested in learning to ride in a group, up to highly experienced cyclists who enjoy riding in a fast group. For those new to road cycling, experienced ride leaders provide instruction in safe road cycling techniques as well as group riding guidance. Scheduled rides depart from locations in the Simcoe area, as well as Delhi and Courtland, and often travel into neighbouring counties of Haldimand, Oxford, Elgin and Brant. Rides vary

in distance from 30 km to 70 km depending on the level of the ride and time availability. In addition to several regular groups offered in the daytime and evenings during the week from April to October, Silver Spokes also hosts special events such as a Canada Day Ride, a Labour Day Ice Cream Ride, and monthly Eco Adventure Sunday morning rides. The club also has a strong presence at many events held around Southwestern Ontario, such as Le Tour de Norfolk (July 17), Cambridge Tour de Grand (June 12), The Godefredus Ride (August 4), Paris to Ancaster Race (April 24) and more. Silver Spokes is also part of the larger Norfolk County cycling community that encourages cycling in various forms, including local trail cycling, mountain biking, and triathlon training along with other clubs in the area. If you’re not quite sure if road cycling is for you, Silver Spokes offers Try-a-Ride opportunities. Anyone considering membership in the Silver Spokes is encouraged to join us for one of the scheduled Try-a-Rides. Guests are allowed to attend two sessions before making a commitment to membership or payment. Try-a-Rides are connected to a recreational or casual ride and are a great chance to learn about cycling safely and efficiently in a group. The speed and distance of Try-a-Rides are matched to the abilities of the participants… no one is left behind!

Participants must have access to a roadworthy bicycle in good working condition with lights and a basic repair kit. Helmets are mandatory. If you think your bicycle may need a little TLC, there is a free bicycle maintenance workshop scheduled for May 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Charlotteville Brewing Co., organized by North Shore Cycle. For more information about the Try-aRides, contact Michael Davis at rmdavis@amtelecom.net. BE HUMBLE “Throw out your conceited opinions, for it is impossible for a person to begin to learn what he thinks he already knows.” Epictetus If you are like me and want to keep learning, if you want to improve your life, then it makes sense to seek out mentors and teachers, or at least be attentive when you come across them; it also makes sense to read great books. In order to benefit from this approach, you must be willing to be humble and ready to let go of opinions you already have if they are revealed to be false or inadequate. I believe it is facile to simply say, “Life is short.” If we are fortunate, we have plenty of time to become wiser and more skilled in the art of living as we age. Experience is a powerful teacher. If we have the will, we learn as we go. As I age, my physical abilities are declining, my mental acuity may be relatively stable, although that is a topic of debate depending on who I talk to, but my will to keep pressing forward and to keep looking ahead is undeterred. I don’t understand the appeal of advertisements for retirement living that promote not having to do the normal tasks of everyday living, such as cooking or raking leaves. We are used to doing the everyday chores; they give our lives structure and a certain level of purpose. It doesn’t appeal to me to have nothing I need to do. The statement “…it is impossible for a person to begin to learn what he thinks he already knows” is becoming ingrained in the forefront of my mind more and more since I first read it recently. It is a

long, winding road from the conceit of youth to the humility of old age. I was as conceited in my beliefs and opinions as anyone, and although much less these days, still dangerously so all too often. It is part of my character I am working on more and more. I have a sign hanging near me as I write this piece that states, “You ain’t learnin’ nothing when you’re talkin’”, given to me by a friend. There is a saying that is applied to the young, “Why don’t you leave home while you still know everything?” We make many mistakes as we travel through life. I don’t think we should beat ourselves up too much about that as we look back. It happens to all of us and it is inevitable, all part of the process of gaining experience as we hurry from event to event along the way. However, the sooner we gain humility and the sooner we study what has happened to others, perhaps the sooner we can get on a smoother path. It could even be said that we need to learn from the mistakes of others, because we can’t live long enough to make them all ourselves! Why are you here? What are your goals in life? In my life, I am aiming for tranquility, purpose, self-control and happiness. By now I pretty much know what brings me happiness. What brings you happiness is for you to determine. I have the hope that what brings someone happiness does not negatively affect the happiness of others. I know and accept that there will always be conflict, unfairness and unhappiness in the world. However, we can all make the world a better place in some way if we can interact with humility and are open to listening to one another. There is always someone who is smarter and wiser than we are. As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “Every man I meet is my master in some point, and in that I learn of him.” Think of a topic current on all our minds – Covid. Everyone has an opinion and everyone

thinks their opinion is right. Most people I know don’t want to engage in conversations about the subject any more. Why is that? It is because people don’t want to learn. They don’t want to let go of the opinions they already have. They don’t want to listen to the thoughts of those who have different viewpoints. Friendships have ended because of Covid views. Families have undergone tremendous stress because of it. Innumerable fruitless arguments and insults have ensued. Think about that. Everyone thinks they are right in their analysis of Covid. Yet it is so divisive that everybody can’t be right, can they? If you want to learn, be humble. Each morning, I am eager to get up and start my day. I think that is a good sign that I am on my way to wisdom and figuring out the point of being here.

Cold & Flu Season

Barb Anstead Holistic Nutritionist

To say there is a pervasive level of frustration with stubborn and frequent illness this cold and flu season would be an understatement. There is also a good deal of fear, uncertainty and confusion surrounding how best to handle the viruses and infections we are seeing in our communities right now. So many people, especially parents of school-age children, are currently exhausted and feeling defeated by the sheer number of illnesses going through their homes in rapid succession. This is not an uncommon phenomenon for this time of year. However, our immune systems may not be up to the task! Yes, we currently are in the thick of cold and flu season - however, we are coming out of a totally unprecedented period of time in which our immune systems have not had much of their typical form of workout! For two years and more, masks and isolating etc., have been the mandate. Statistically, between lockdowns and the other measures that have been in place, it seems obvious that it has effectively limited our exposure to all sorts of other, regular seasonal opportunistic infections. By design, our medical authorities, through much deliberation, devised a plan.

This has been an intentional, global medical intervention to maintain a level of control on the rate of infection and relieve the burden on our health care system. In doing so, our immune systems may have become a little “lazy”, perhaps not quite prepared to greet the onslaught of opportunistic organisms that have been waiting for the right time to come out and play. At Dover Apothecary, we are most certainly seeing a very robust number of assorted colds, flus etc., affecting our patients and making them feel miserable. Many individuals are struggling with catching “one thing after another”, or symptoms are lingering for longer than expected. We are happy to discuss your options with you over the phone if you are currently unwell. Covid is still very much out there, doing a great job of mutating and adjusting to continue an age-old, programmed viral agenda to continue infecting. Viruses are great at adapting quickly to ensure their own survival. Our ability to adapt happens at a much slower pace in comparison. This means each of us may need to be evaluating and actively taking steps to support our immune response as things “open up” more and more. Being prepared and having the appropriate, scientifically evidenced tools on hand to support ourselves is just good practice, a commonsense approach to supporting our bodies to become stronger to effectively overcome and reduce the severity of things we are exposed to. We need to fuel our bodies with nutritious foods, good hydration, adequate sleep, personal hygiene, stress management techniques, social, mental and emotional, physical and spiritual support, fresh air, exercise, and supplements. Each of these plays a huge role in regulating our immune function and ability to fight off the different organisms we will invariably encounter. Immune systems can become lazy with disuse, just as they can become overwhelmed by exhaustion. If you wish to find out how to find the right balance for you and your loved ones, we are here for you! Having the right tools on hand prior to being unwell is the best way to ensure your body has what it needs. It’s also the best way to not infect others as we are typically at our most virulent before our symptoms are bad. Washing hands, resting, staying home and avoiding infecting others is still the responsible thing to do. There will always be members of our communities that have increased vulnerability to any infection. We can be responsible citizens and stewards of our society and protect those most vulnerable. Probiotics, Zinc Lozenges, Herbal and Nutritional supplements, D3, Vitamin C, sinus rinses – there are so many supportive tools that may be right for you! There is no replacement for good nutrition. It is the foundation of every metabolic function, the very cellular processes of our bodies. Sugar derails immune function at every level. Processed and ultra-processed foods are not the way to go if you are looking for a healthier, happier future. Stbbor enough to surive, deterined enough to thrive. By: Erin Scott In assoiaction with I remember the moment when I truly decided to live again, the moment when I started to believe that just maybe I could have a future, and a life. In truth living is often a scarier feat than death because truly living involves opening your heart and feeling. When a person has spent years fighting to stay on this earthly plane they exist in survival mode, shutting off all feeling in an effort to survive the pain. Joy, happiness and love become this distant memory as we fight with every stubborn inch of our beings. Eventually, we get to the point where we face a choice, will we let our trauma, our pain, our illness control us? Will we keep our hearts buried and just merely move through life, as a broken shadow of who we once were? Or… will we choose to live, to face our fears and open our hearts to the joy of being alive. I had the joy of sitting down (virtually) with Justin Wood who is the CEO and founder of Geneticks. Geneticks is a private laboratory in Canada that offers their tick testing services to Canadians. Geneticks has the ability to test for up to 15 different tick-borne pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi, the main causative agent of Lyme disease in North America. Justin is no stranger to Lyme disease as he himself was diagnosed with late disseminated Lyme disease in 2015. Justin doesn’t remember the tick that infected him, but he does remember all too well the decline in his health, with the rise of fatigue, joint pain, and neurological issues, as parts of his life like soccer and snowboarding slowly fell to the wayside starting in 2011. With the continual decline in his health and subsequent concussions slowly the realization came about that there was a lot more going on with his health and his body. Even so, it still wasn’t until 2015 that he was diagnosed with late disseminated Lyme disease. Fast-forward 3 years to the founding of Geneticks in 2018. By this time, Justin

had slowly regained his life and strength and was itching to do something more. As he has an extensive background in genetics and molecular biology, including a Master of Science with specializations in genetics from the University of Calgary he was toying with the idea of either going back into academia or starting his own company that tested ticks for Canadians. With every potential roadblock that popped up in his path to starting his own company, they were just as easily cleared, and in 2018 Geneticks started testing ticks for the public. The reality is, those years in between the diagnoses and the creation of Geneticks were ones where the sole focus was on survival, on fighting to see a tomorrow, where everything else falls to the wayside. Then as you slowly grow strong again you start to piece the parts of yourself and your life back together, a patchwork quilt of your struggles, your pain, your joy and your hopes. Justin spoke of the choice that many of us who go through illness and trauma face, the choice to just survive… or to decide to live again. He spoke of the beauty of reclaiming joy in the small things and those precious moments when a real and true smile finally, once again graces your face. It is often the smallest of moments that are the ones that we fight the hardest to reclaim, like a genuine smile as we sit among friends at the dinner table. I asked Justin what his dream would be and he described that it was getting back into the outdoors, that it is being able to adventure and explore nature again. Often when we get ill, we wonder if some dreams are just never meant to be, we bury them and often our hearts in the process. Yet there is something to be said of the courage that it takes to dream, to believe in that dream, and to fight to reclaim it. Ticks, and tickborne disease can be scary but as Justin says, “Don’t let it keep you from enjoying life and the outdoors.” So, go out and explore the outdoors, adventure, dream and fall in love with nature all over again and know that if you come across a tick, Geneticks has your back, because nature is meant to be loved and lived in.
