BillionPieces By: Dave Scott In the time it takes to tell someone you love them, your very being can simply disappear from this earth as we know it. I have written and talked before about my heart attack five years ago. I was out for a run with my wife and friends when it occurred on that momentous day. The reality of the five-year milestone came up recently in a conversation with my wife. To be totally honest, I didn't realize it had been that long. That night and the next couple of days, I struggled with reliving and processing the event of that terrible night in my mind. I have always felt that some part of my spirit was left out there that evening. I know that may sound a little beyond reason, but I have to tell you that being within the grasp of death and somehow finding a way back to life, there was a cost paid, and I know that. That underlying current within me needed to be addressed, and I decided that I would go for a run and return to the spot where my world suddenly stopped. I had not been there for about 3 ½ years, and I was fully aware that it would be an emotional return.

Early one Saturday morning, long before the rest of the world was ready to rise and shine, I set out on the trail leading to that fateful location. I felt nervous and unsure; my pace was up and down, and I needed to remind myself to just relax and enjoy the beauty of the morning run. Your mind can be tricky, and a thought flashed through my mind, what happens if it occurs again? Roughly a mile in, I came upon the exact location. I stopped and looked down. I could feel the sadness of the moment well up. I made myself stay in the spot, trying to feel that lost energy that had left that day. I was reaching for it, but it was out of my grasp; I could then sense the anger building. Why did that happen to me?! My emotions were taking over as the last memory of that moment five years ago flashed back, that unbelievable, surreal feeling of a billion pieces of warm love that washed over me in those fleeting seconds of death. I cannot explain it. I can only tell you that the imprint of that moment will be etched within my being for the rest of my days! I stood alone at this spot five years later, trying to pull back what was taken from me that day, trying to understand why my journey continues. My emotions swirled endlessly; the moment was overwhelming, I needed to run. Slowly my perspective began to snap back to the current reality, and I let my body take over and focused on the run at hand.

I slowly moved through the forest with ease, taking in nature's beauty. I smiled as I passed trails that a group of us enjoyed many moons ago. My trail senses kicked in, and I remembered the nuance of each trail as I found the rhythm to carry me along. The calm quiet I felt with each step on the forest floor reminded me how lucky I was! Soon my hour was up, and I hit the main trail for home. My mind had cleared. I could feel the cool breeze across my face, my legs felt strong, and my spirit was rekindled. I understood why I was here at this point in my life… I left the trail and started walking to cool down, opening the cold water bottle and letting the splash hit the back of my throat... ah, so good! I exhaled my breath slowly as my strong heart returned to its walking rate… ah yes, the heart! Its strength had been what saved me; it restarted and brought me back from the edge, but still, a piece of me was gone. I had come here to visit that piece of me that had left me five years earlier. It was still out there on those trails. It couldn't leave with me, but at least we could share a moment together one more time.

I was one of the lucky ones to survive. Please take a moment to read the information below from Heart and Stroke. https://www.heartandstroke.ca How many heart attacks occur each year in Canada? Each minute without oxygen and blood flow to the brain increases the risk of permanent damage and death. Every second counts. Each year, an estimated 35,000 cardiac arrests occur in Canada. The vast majority happen in public places or at home, and few people survive. Eat a Healthy Diet Eating lots of veggies, cooking at home, limiting processed foods... these are all habits that protect your health. Stay active Move more. Walk, rake leaves, play a sport. OLD DOGS “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went.” Will Rogers “My dear old dog, most constant of all friends.” W.C. Doane I recently read an article about a special dog named Nani Beags, a beagle and Brittany spaniel mix. Nani spent her first year in a pound in Tennessee. Then she was relocated into temporary foster care by a man named Scott. However, after her time being locked up, she proved to be completely anti-social and tried to get away from anyone wanting to adopt her. In the meantime, gradually, she began accepting some contact and going for short runs with Scott. He decided to adopt her. Although Nani was extremely withdrawn, when running with Scott, she magically gained confidence. She hated not being in the lead and simply wouldn’t allow it. Somehow running gave her an awareness of her capabilities. She found herself. Scott joined a running group that did trails. Off leash, dogs were part of the group. Nani led the way on every run. Over time, she became very fit, doing distances of up to 16 miles. This pattern was maintained for many years until, at the age of 12, mileage was cut back somewhat on her veterinarian’s recommendation. At 14, she had to cut back again and also slow down. Despite the decreased mileage and a slower pace, her enthusiasm and excitement remained the same. Today, she is almost 16 years old. She’s gone from running 8-9 minute miles down to 12-13 minutes, with a total of 15-20 miles a week. Nani is on a special diet for her kidneys and has a glucosamine supplement for her joints. She has a little hitch in her step and occasionally falls. As well, Nani is quite deaf. She camps out by the front door for much of the day as she can’t trust her hearing to let her know when Scott is going out. When outdoor time comes, she still yelps in anticipation and wags

her tail. On some level, she probably knows her time is coming, but she also knows exactly what she loves to do. Reading the story brought up many thoughts and memories of my own dogs. In my life, I have had five. Three of them, a beagle, a part Lab mixed breed and a Gordon setter, lived to be fourteen years old. The fourth, a boxer, was tragically killed by a car at the age of one. My present dog, the boxer Maisie, is nine and a half. I have run with all of them. Nani reminds me most of Pointu, the part Lab and first dog Juta and I had after we were married. Like Nani, he came from the pound. Initially acquired for Juta’s parents, he joined us as a young adult dog after they both had died. He had been used to running free at their retirement home in an Estonian camp and generally continued to do so throughout his life until we moved to Georgetown when he was ten. I remember Pointu always running at the head of the group when we cross-country skied with our friends in the forests near our house, going in front when Juta and her friend went horseback riding and being a bit ahead when my pals Big Red, Alf, and I would run the cottage road on Sunday mornings. I also remember the hot summer morning when we were heading out on that road for a 10k run, and Pointu just stopped and laid down off to the side. It had finally become too much for him. The four of us turned around and walked back to the marina. It was a bittersweet moment for me. Pointu no longer accompanied us on those runs, but he continued to love hiking, swimming and being in the boat. I also remember the day in Georgetown when, for the first time, he saw a squirrel running across the yard and just stood watching it. We continued doing our neighbourhood walks right up until his death. My present dog Maisie loves running around my property here, but we no longer go for runs together. A few years ago, when I was training for my first multi-day race with Corina, my training partner in those days, Maisie went with us on trail runs up to 20k. Maisie still follows me about wherever I go, but I no longer run with her. Now it is my turn. I can no longer run with her. She still chases squirrels or runs a few hard

laps around the yard for the sheer fun of it. Maisie wants to go with me wherever or whenever I go, in the car, on the property or for our regular walks. Luckily for me, she has always proven to be adaptable to her circumstances. I’m not sure if Maisie would be considered an old dog or not. She is very grey around the muzzle, yet she remains curious and excited about all manner of things. Every human gets an enthusiastic greeting. I have had dogs for most of my life, and my dogs seem to do this amazing thing where they just exist and make my life better because of it. My current thinking is it wouldn’t be fair to a dog to have another one after Maisie. I have spent my life being active with my dogs and spending countless hours with them in the outdoors. I’m not sure I could do it any other way. Perhaps we’ll see. I think we know who is really like Nani Beags now.

Nothing “Normal” about Digestive Distress Barb Anstead Holistic Nutritionist

Digestive, intestinal, and bowel distress are all critical functions but are seldom talked about. If you or a loved one are one of the many people suffering in silence, this is a conversation you shouldn’t put off. The sheer number of products available over the counter to temporarily relieve “occasional” symptoms is staggering – so much so that it is easy to assume that these problems must be “normal”. As a basic guideline, if you can relate your very occasional symptoms to a “one-off” type of situation and those symptoms upset you less than once per month, you are likely living a lifestyle and fueling your body with nutritious foods that are serving you quite well. Special occasions, holidays and events should not send a healthy individual into a 2-week tailspin with digestive trauma! Even worse is that there are an alarming number of individuals dealing with mild, moderate or severe issues, impacting them daily. In my home office practice and at Dover Apothecary, we

are firmly committed to giving our clients and patients the very best of care. We strive to educate and empower our community by providing them with sustainable health care solutions. We consider lifestyle, nutritional support, quality, therapeutic level products and professional, science-based options adjusted to your specific needs. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are the best time to pop in if you need direction with supplements, have a question you would like guidance on, or would like to meet me. Appointments are required for a Nutritional Consultation. These bookings are typically out my home office. Nutrient Assessments are another tool I use in my practice and can be added to your consult. Many of my clients, myself included, have chosen to embrace the Metabolic Balance Program I am now coaching. Reduced pain and inflammation, better digestion, reduced bloating, decreased need for medications, weight loss, increased energy and well being are some of the happy “side effects” of this doctor created science-based program. Please contact me for more information if you are committed to rediscovering the healthiest version of YOU. Everyday Tips for better Digestive Health: Address Stress: Gut feelings are real. The Enteric Nervous System communicates with the Brain in a constant feedback loop. Immune Health: 80% of our immune system resides within the digestive system. Chronic disturbances can interfere with immune function and lead to chronic health conditions, cancers, allergies, sensitivities and intolerances and be major contributors to a wide variety of serious health issues. Look Before You Flush: This daily “test” doesn’t cost you anything and can be one of the first indications that larger problems may be lurking in your future. Check out the Bristol Scale to see what healthy bowel movements should look like! Journal, monitor and report to your health care provider if your bowel habits change for no apparent reason. If something changes, follow up, don’t take no for an answer; only you can know what is normal for you! Fibre: get enough, get the right balance of both Soluble and Insoluble Fibre. Too loose: add more Soluble (absorbs and bulks up). Too firm: add more Insoluble from fruits and vegetables. Need a list? Let us know. We can provide you with more information in a great handout! Water!!!!: Critical for absorption of nutrients and elimination of toxins. Too much or too little can create problems. Never increase your soluble fibre

One More Day By: Dave Scott Back when Covid started, I lost a friend who was a resident of a local nursing home. She and I first connected many moons ago when she started coming to my aquafit class. She always had an easy smile, worked hard in the pool, and loved to talk about how she enjoyed her treats on occasion! We had a comfortable camaraderie in the pool, some days, it would just be her and me, and we would chat away while we worked out. You could tell over the years she had come to understand the value of a good conversation and the importance of listening and comforting others. We never got into great detail about her job. Still, you knew she was damn good at it and that her lifelong commitment to helping others was paramount to her! She spent many years as a nurse, and it was easy to see that she was naturally gifted in her career. She loved our NYCA programs with the kids, and she asked about popping in to show some of the older participants how to knit!

Of course, we said yes, and sure enough, she came with the bags of yarn and positive energy to teach the kids a skill that was slowly slipping away from society. Even her granddaughter came to our summer camps with that same smile, loads of energy, and an open mind to try anything. We still smile when her name comes up! Like I said initially, my friend passed from Covid early on, long before there was a vaccine. She was a nurse who spent her life helping others, yet the medical community could not save her. The last of her golden years were taken away! With all we have encountered in the last two years, we cannot forget about the folks who have fallen to Covid and what their lives meant to our communities! My friend would have given anything to spend one more wonderful day with her granddaughter! Appreciate life and the moments you get!
