Friendship

By Dave Scott Photo by Isaiah Dowling

I recently ran into an old friend, whom I had not seen in a while. We have a friendship so strong that we can just pick up the conversation as if we talked yesterday, but in reality, it might have been months or even years! We rented a place together in our younger days, close to 40 odd years ago. My friend was a drinker, smoker, rock 'n' roller, so damn smart, and he could fix anything. I was the wannabe hockey player, cook, over-thinker, and soft partier. He was Van Halen to my Springsteen. We were oil and water, but darn, we got along way too well!!! We always had respect for each other (plus, there was always a cold beverage in the fridge). The cottage we rented was out in the middle of nowhere, which suited our lifestyle perfectly! We threw parties with music blaring, bonfires blazing, and horseshoe tournaments by car headlights... ah youth! At one of these gatherings, I met some of his old buddies from where he used to live. Everyone was super friendly. It gave me tremendous insight into my friend's earlier life, who he was, and the importance he put on maintaining solid friendships. Over the years, my old roommate changed a few of his habits, yet he and his old friends stayed in touch. Though they did not see each other often, it was like they had just talked yesterday when they did. It was a lifelong friendship! I only saw those

folks a few times over the years, and I understood their importance to my roommate. Unfortunately, my old roommate recently lost a couple of those great guys to cancer, just months apart from each other. In those final months, they continued to keep in touch, calling when they could, sharing stories, and reminiscing about days gone past, laughing at all the fun they had! The bonds had grown even stronger! It has been a tough year, to say the least, for my old roommate, but he can take pride in understanding the value of lifelong friendships and know the memories won't fade away. He was able to stand with his friends and support them with his love and understanding, something only a true friend could do. Somewhere down the road, I'm sure they will meet again and just pick up the conversation where they left off.

ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH

JENNIE CHANDA

I am here with Jennie Chanda,

who is the President of our local Community Living Access board of directors and Vice President of Community Living Ontario board of directors. I have known you a long time Jennie. Thanks for meeting with me. So for people who don’t know, tell us about Community Living Access? Community Living Access is an organization that supports people with disabilities. People have choices and options on the supports they receive. Community Living Access has support staff that help people to live in their communities. People invite support staff into their homes to provide supports with activities and what they do. What do you do on the board of directors? The board is focused on being inclusive and spreading the word we are one community - not a community of people with disabilities and another one without disabilities, but one, all-inclusive. The board works hard to help the community look at the whole picture and see that inclusion also means belonging. The board is working hard and considers ourselves ambassadors for the people we support.

How long have you been on the board? I have been involved for 18 years, 15 years being on the board. I was a volunteer first. I was a professor at Fanshawe College (PSW course), and we needed community placements. I spoke to HR and asked people if my students could come in their homes. People graciously accepted. Congratulations on being elected the Vice President of Community Living Ontario. What is your role there? I am very honoured and proud to be the VP of Community Living Ontario. I will be doing the same work but on a bigger scale as it is all of Ontario. What do you want to see in the future for Community Living? True belonging for everyone. I would like to see Community - with neighbours accepting neighbours, all inclusive. The new R-word is Respect. Thank you for your time, and let’s see good things happen for Community Living Access organizations everywhere!

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

THERE’S NO COMPARISON “Don’t let the past remind us of what we are not now.” ~ Judy Blue Eyes, by Crosby, Stills and Nash. As I was finishing my regular workout, I came upon my friend Dave. He is a long-time runner and still competes occasionally. He told me that he had just done a 5k race in Hamilton the week before. I complimented him on his excellent time and placing. We got to talking about days past and the fact that, of course, our race times are not near what they used to be. In the course of the chat, Dave said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I immediately replied, “I like that.” He responded, “Yes, I’ve always remembered it.” I asked, “Where does it come from?” and he answered, “You said it years ago.” I was surprised, “Oh! I’ll have to try to remember it too.” The quote is attributed to Teddy Roosevelt. Another friend, Garry, a veteran athlete and fellow sports nut, suggested the anecdote might generate an article. When I was younger and full of myself, I often ran on the trails of the Albion Hills Conservation Area. One evening, about dusk, I was running along peacefully at a good clip. All of a sudden, another runner whipped by me over a bridge and then disappeared around a bend. I tried to catch up but couldn’t. It was a new experience. I’d never been passed on one of my solo runs before. Nowadays, I can’t remember the last time I ever passed another runner on the trail. That is the arc of life. I used to always look at the top of the finishers’ lists of races to see how the competition had done. Now I scan the slowest finishers of ultra races to see who I know. It is no longer my habit to even check the results of short races; that’s a whole new crowd. As we age and face the limitations of what our bodies are able to do, each of us has a decision to make. Will we continue to participate, or will we retire? How much do we believe in the benefits of staying

with the activity? How much do we still enjoy it and want to be part of that community? A close friend, and training partner of mine back in my Etobicoke Huskies days, once told me that he would quit when he could no longer do a mile in under 6 minutes. He was close to sixty years old at the time. Fortunately, when he finally had to face that inevitability, he changed his mind. He still runs and is now in his early eighties. As an adult, I have been competing for 45 years. I have to work harder in some ways than I used to in order to obtain far less speedy results. As I have stated before, the slower I got, the further I went. It now seems like a different sport. I used to run distances primarily from 5k to the marathon. The emphasis in training was on speed and continuous running. Now, in multi-day ultras, the emphasis is on finding the formula for continuous forward progress as much as that can be achieved. It becomes a mental and logistical challenge, not simply a physical challenge. I still need to train seriously, but no longer with any high intensity. In essence, the goal is to get the body and mind ready to keep doing the same thing for up to ten days, without breaking down completely, on minimal rest. Leg speed is no longer a factor. Comparison to events of my younger days is not really relevant. One attribute of the sport of running is that looking back upon the past, there can be no mystical shaping of events to make them more than what they were. Finishing times and places are definite, not able to be coloured or amplified. Competitive runners can tell you decades later where they finished in races, who beat them and who they beat. They can recall their times, especially the good ones, to the second. The norm is to know personal bests at all distances forever. So it is absolute. You are what you are, and you were what you were. If one were so inclined, he could chart his ascent and subsequent descent with remarkable precision. But why would I want to do that? I have moved on to doing something quite different from my younger days anyway. Five year age categories were initiated and put into place for the first World Masters Athletics Championships, held in Toronto in 1975. Before the creation of age categories and Masters events, runners generally stopped competing when they finished school. When I was doing some running in high school in the 1960s, older runners were never seen on our streets. When I’d be on the roads with my teammates, and we were wearing sweatsuits, people would sometimes yell at us from car windows, “What are you doing running in your pajamas?” Now I see people of all ages at all times of the day, running on the local streets and trails. It pleases me, and I’m glad, so many have embraced the sport, hopefully as a lifetime pursuit.

I didn’t take up running for any health-related reasons. In hindsight, it may have been the best thing I ever did for my health (except for my knees!). The benefits are wide-ranging, including physical, mental and emotional factors that enhance our lives. I believe it is in one’s interest to continue in our activities in whatever way we are able and to not compare ourselves to others or an earlier self. I believe life is about looking forward, not backward. As the legendary pitcher, Satchel Paige put it, “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.” and “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?” Paige also said, “Airplanes may kill you, but they ain’t likely to hurt you.” I wonder if Garry thinks that might be worth an article.

Sporting Life By Dave Scott John Madden passed away at the end of 2021. He was, in my opinion, the best NFL football colour commentator of my generation. He was just plain fun to listen to. You could tell he was an old coach (he won the Super Bowl coaching the Raiders), and his excitement as he described the play that had just happened was like a kid opening a toy Christmas morning! He brought energy, insight and kept it simple to educate you on the finer points of the game as you watched. It didn't matter who was playing; I would tune in just to hear Madden and Pat Summerall call the game. Madden was just that big, happy-go-lucky kid who loved the game beyond words. He wanted you to join in his fun! Life has changed so much since my younger days of watching and listening to the likes of Madden, Vin Scully with the Dodgers, Tom and Jerry with the Blue Jays, Foster Hewitt with the Leafs. Boy, I miss those days! Before Scully retired a few years back, I would lay in bed at night and listen to him call a game. He did the games alone, so it felt like

Open 11:30am-7:30pm!

every word was meant for you! It was like he was telling you a new story every night. Tom and Jerry (Blue Jays) were my comfort announcers. No matter how tough things got in life, they were always there, reliable, as they kept you on the edge of your seat with their call of the game! Hearing Foster Hewitt's voice as he called the Summit Series, Canada versus Russia, in 1972 when Henderson scored for Canada is forever etched in my mind. Foster was it! I never really considered how much of an impact these men had on my life. They were the calm when life around me was in chaos, on those night shifts at work when you just needed to hear a voice and Scully or Tom and Jerry were there. Those Sunday afternoon football games with Madden when you were recovering from the night before or Foster being the reason you wanted to play the game and score that winning goal! I miss these friends. They were consistently there for me. They were the escape from reality in a time long before the internet. They made sports fun for the fan and understood the value of that fan.

FROM THE CHAIR.

Laura is excited to let everyone know Simcoe Natural Foods is selling sprouting jars (NOW) and sprouting seeds (NOW and Sprout Master). Sunflower and Pea sprouts are very popular with children.

Today I want to spend a little time identifying three winter hair issues. Our staff at Blade Salon is always happy to recommend products that can restore the beauty and bounce during the winter months. 1. SPLIT ENDS: Keep up with regular trims to ensure your split ends get trimmed off. Also, make sure you use a repairing leave-in conditioner and heat protection if you use any hot tools. 2. DRY SCALP: Use a gentle, hydrating and moisturising shampoo. Avoid shampoos for oily hair, as they can cause your hair and scalp to dry out more.

We also carry fresh microgreens from a local farm on the Fourteenth, which stay fresh for two weeks!

3. FRIZZ: Using shampoos and conditioners specifically for smoothing out your hair will help lock moisture into your hair. Also, using conditioning oil products such as Moroccanoil will help keep frizz at bay.

You can pick microgreen blends that are mild or spicy. There is something for all!

Come on in for any advice on the right products to help your hair look its best!

ONE POWERFUL DECISION n ca Crush Dozens of Excuses!! BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

weight gain, increased pain levels, less than optimal sleep patterns and not managing stress well at all. I hadn’t changed what or how much I ate. I was active but somewhat less so because of pain levels – my body, despite my intentions or permission, was just changing into what we accept in our society as a “postmenopausal normal”. For males, this stage of hormonal changes is referred to as andropause. The relief I felt as I studied the science behind this phenomenon in my most recent course of studies has been absolutely profound - blowing up any notion of a lack of control in these mid-life stages and unleashing the real potential we have within us! No more excuses, just a decision to embrace. I wasn’t in Menopause – I was in METAPAUSE!!!! My metabolic functions, like yours, are governed by at least 50 identified hormones and countless enzymes. Mine had given up on me because I simply wasn’t fuelling my body with exactly the food/ fuel my body needed specifically to thrive on. As a newly certified Metabolic Balance Coach, I am so excited to share this program with my clients! Coaches are mandated to be our own guinea pig, our very own first client, to experience the journey. It makes us the best candidates to guide others through this program. Created by doctors, the individualized program is your specific lifetime blueprint to the best foods for you and you alone. At the Apothecary and in my home practice, we counsel individuals on a multitude of health issues, but overall wellness is at the root of all of it. Nutrition, the very foods we eat, are the foundation of our bodies. Globally, we are increasingly overfed and undernourished, leading to and aggravating the chronic diseases and comorbidities that are now holding us hostage to the virus. To learn more about whether this program is right for you, contact Barb Anstead NNCP: (519) 410-3544 or barb@healthywellandwise.ca or at Dover Apothecary (519) 583-3784. I’m happy to say that after just a few short weeks, no one is at risk of a button from that winter jacket taking out their eye! I am experiencing less pain, better stress management, and improved sleep patterns.

Mike, Sheena and the Staff at Dover Apothecary would like to extend our very best wishes for each of you as we begin the New Year. 2022 appears to be starting with a familiar and unsettling theme. Covid has come to seem like the “Groundhog Day” of viruses, and we have been doing and will continue to support our community to the best of our abilities. If I’ve learned anything over the past few years, the most influential is most certainly, to embrace the wisdom of focusing on those things I do have the power to change. I continue to learn and grow to serve my clients, adding new programs and options to my practice each year. I have fantastic news for those ready to “Shift Gears” in the New Year! (We could all use some light in our lives!) I realized recently (as some of my clothing was beginning to strain more than a little bit at the seams) that despite the education, experience and knowledge of my 30-year career, that I had settled in, to the rhythm of acceptance of a very slow but steady Barb Anstead NNCP: (519) 410-3544 | barb@healthywellandwise.ca

I am sure that many of you have seen the new ad in The Hub lately for Geneticks, so I wanted to take the time to tell you a little bit about them. Geneticks is the first private lab in Canada that offers tick testing to Canadians from coast to coast. Their goal is to provide accessible and reliable tick testing to Canadians. This is especially important to those who reside in Ontario; as of August 2021, the National Microbiology Laboratory announced that it is no longer accepting tick submissions through the passive surveillance program for pathogen testing in Ontario. As a result, Ontarians can no longer get their ticks tested through their health care providers or their local health units. Thankfully, Geneticks is happy to offer their services to test ticks found on yourself, your loved ones and even your pets! Testing the tick gives you fast and reliable information about what potential pathogens you may have come into contact with and lets you move forward. Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to tick-borne infections.

While there is a fee to have your tick tested, as Geneticks is a private lab, this just comes with the added benefit of supporting a Canadian business that is dedicated to tick-borne research! So, head on over to Geneticks for all your tick testing needs. They are here to support you and help you feel safe and confident as you head out on your next great outdoor adventure.
