Before wave three came pounding ashore, we were busy making videos and doing the audio podcast for your enjoyment! I have to thank my friend Laura, owner of Simcoe Natural foods, who invited us to shoot a video for her business. I was impressed at all the store has to offer, from health food choices to a vast selection of healthrelated products. Check out the video on Facebook at Simcoe Natural Foods. CMHA of Brant and Haldimand Norfolk was our next stop. It was perhaps the most rewarding group of videos I have ever had the opportunity to shoot. Chris Atkins of One Media shot six interviews and did an excellent job of bringing our interviews to life. The stories were absolutely life-changing and heartfelt. Find the videos on Facebook, Canadian Mental Health Association, Brant Haldimand Norfolk Branch. Barb Anstead from Dover Apothecary provides us with sound health advice during these critical times with our Dover Apothecary health videos. Check it out at HubMedia.info on Facebook.

Triathlon for a Cure
Fundraiser for Juravinski Cancer Centre Join me in raising funds for the Chemotherapy Unit at Juravinski Cancer Centre. Hi, I’m Penny (Lewis) MacCormack, and I’m completing my own personal mini triathlon with my friend and my fitness instructor.
I would like to thank everyone who has donated, cheered me on and supported me in so many ways. Thank you to Getzum Exposure for designing and donating the shirts to myself and my support team. This community and extended community have been awesome. My sincere thanks,
Penny

In 2019 I was in the best shape of my life participating in boot camp and military tone and other exercises when I got the news that I have metastatic colon cancer. I have spent a lot of time (every two weeks) at Juravinski Cancer Centre in the last two years and want to give back to a place that has become my second home and has supported people I know, including my parents. Everyone at Juravinski Cancer Centre has been awesome from my oncology doctor and nurse, chemo nurses, registration, cleaning staff, volunteers, concierge, lab techs, etc. So, May 29, two days after my 50th (and my 43rd round of chemo completed), I will kayak (Waterford Ponds), bike (Waterford to Simcoe) and walk/jog (Simcoe to Port Dover).
People are welcome to come and watch the start, transitions, finisher, or join in for part of the journey. Please remember to social distance, keep safe and follow provincial guidelines. You can find details and updates on the Facebook page, “Penny’s Triathlon for a Cure.”
We all know or will know someone who is or has battled cancer, so I am excited to see how we as an extended community can support Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre the way it has or will support us and our loved ones.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? “I think this is what hooks one to gardening; it is the closest one can come to being present at creation.” ~ Phyllis Theroux “The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway.” ~ Michael Pollan “Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes.” ~ Author unknown My wife Juta and I moved into our first house during the winter of 1975. When the snow melted, it was exciting to discover what we had. Full of youth and energy, we decided to make a vegetable garden out behind our little house in the country. In a sunny, flat area, I cut out sections of sod and began turning over the soil. I still remember running up to the house and calling out, “Come and see what I found.” I had discovered that the previous owners had been in the practice of digging pits and burying their household garbage. I had found my first one and had to clean up the mess I had unearthed. It wasn’t until the following year that a rural municipal trash pick-up service was instituted in our region. From that inglorious beginning, our routine of planting an annual garden started. It continued for over twenty-five years, culminating in two vegetable patches at our place north of Nobleton. I have clear memories of Juta frequently lugging two full honey pails of water about a hundred feet up the hill to our plot beside the shed. We usually grew a lot more than we could use during a summer. Fresh produce was given to family, neighbours and work colleagues. I sometimes took extra for the runners at my Etobicoke track practices. Juta would prepare meal-sized portions to save in our large freezer for winter use. At one time, she even talked of writing a zucchini cookbook. I ate a lot of zucchini pancakes and muffins in my day. We led busy lives, but she always found time to plan, plant and tend the gardens. Each spring, I would usually make the area just a little bit bigger, edge it, turn the soil, add the compost from our pile, then some
bagged fertilizer or manure from our neighbours, break it all up and tamp down a few walkways so that it would appear very neat and orderly. We would do all the initial planting together and then monitor it excitedly to see what was coming up. This routine continued throughout the planting season. All would look organized for a while, the way I liked to see it. But as the growing season progressed, inevitably, the orderliness would disappear. Juta liked to use every available piece of earth to plant more vegetables or companion flowers. Everything grew. Crops such as squash and zucchini would spread out, and my carefully laid out paths vanished. Weeding would become challenging; the rabbits and our neighbour’s chickens would make their annual discoveries. It would all end up in glorious chaos. But it was always good, healthy work and every year, we would be excited to start. We’d spend many summer hours fully engaged in one task or another.
When we moved to Norfolk County, we stopped the practice, mostly because fresh produce was so plentiful in Ontario’s Garden. We just let it get away from us. Last spring, when the first lockdown was instituted, I decided to make a small garden for myself. The Farmers’ Market closed, and it was something to do. I only planted a few things, and my harvest was modest. However, I resurrected some of the joy and some of the memories of the old days. So this year, I am going to expand the size somewhat. I’ll dig out more sod, add all my compost and tamp down my path. We’ll see what happens and what more I plant. It’s nice to be back.
Having your own garden offers you many benefits. Fresh vegetables are a central part of a healthy diet, being full of vitamins and antioxidants. Of course, you won’t have to buy vegetables, and you won’t need environmentally damaging plastic packaging. The gardening will be ecofriendly. You won’t be contributing to the use of fossil fuels from transporting the produce to the local grocery stores. You won’t be using pesticides or herbicides, toxic chemicals that seep into the soil and waterways. You will be outdoors getting healthier. Gardening will provide you with a good workout. All the digging, planting, carrying, watering and harvesting will help tone muscles, build strength and aid flexibility. Time spent in the garden can be an excellent stress reliever. Perhaps you will be more reluctant to waste any food when you have grown your own organic, more flavourful food. If

you don’t already have one, maybe it is time to build your own compost pile, the contents of which can be used to fertilize your next garden. If there is no space for a vegetable plot in your yard, or you don’t have a yard, a small container garden could be the answer. Nurturing your garden in the fresh air will nurture your soul as well as your body.

JACQUI + BRAD I am here with Jacqui MacRae and her partner Brad Chadwick aka the Guy Ferrari of Norfolk County. I hear you both are well known "foodies" and we can read your food reviews on your Facebook pages as well as your Facebook “What’s for Dinner Norfolk.” Q: How long have you been interested in cooking? A: Our whole lives! In the last 7 to 8 years, we have upped our foodie game. Q: Have you ever wanted to be a chef and have a restaurant? A: Jacqui: I have never wanted to be a chef. Having a restaurant is a hard business to open, and they do not have a very good success rate, especially now during a pandemic. Brad: Yes, I have wanted to be a chef since I was a kid, but it is expensive to get the training. Opening a restaurant is a big risk and commitment, and you probably won’t get rich doing it. We would love to have a Food Truck. Q: How did your food shout outs get started? A: We wanted to share our fun and experience with people. We would eat something and want to invite, let's say, 20 people to come and experience it too but realistically couldn't. The next best way was to put it on social media, and then 100 people would see it.
We go by our own personal tastes; we know enough about food, the taste, smell and presentation. Sometimes those mom and pop places have the best food, and it is delicious.
We get the food, take a picture and eat it. If we like it, we post the picture (it’s a good way to remember what the dish looked like), and Brad will do a write up about it.
It's like baseball cards for food people.
Q: Has it helped local businesses? A: It has definitely helped! We go back to the restaurants, and the owners say, "Oh my gosh! We have had 20 people come back and say we saw Brad and Jacqui’s post on Facebook!" Q: What are some of your favourite businesses you have shouted out? A: MC Outback, F Shack, 4280 pho, Forkin Perogy, Andales Tacos, Hen House, Chip Ship, Charlottesville Brewery, Flux in Scotland, Blueberry Hill, Dover Cheese Shop, New Limburg, Coco Cabana, to name a few. Q: Why is it important we stay local? A: We need to support our community! Especially during these troubled times. There is so much great local food and great local people behind it. Thank you both for your time, and I would like to try your food sometime. And any local business should be happy if they get the Facebook shout out, “...tell them Brad and Jacqui sent you!”

FIBRE– GETTING TO THE “BOTTOM” OF THINGS BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist
Digestive health is one of the most deeply unappreciated and, therefore, most poorly understood but critical collection of functions influencing so many aspects of our overall health. Having lost my 43-year-old sister to colon cancer and my Dad to complications of a bowel obstruction, much of my Holistic Nutritionist focus is on educating my clients on the importance and wonders of the digestive processes and the correlation to die-ease and immune health. While there are many facets and considerations to pay attention to in this very wonderous process, the one that is likely least understood is the role and the types of fibres we require. Fibre consumption is woefully misunderstood and often very under-consumed in the North American diet. Many of us get less than 15 grams of dietary fibre per day, but there are studies that indicate we would experience better health in many ways by adjusting the amount and types of fibres we consume - up to 50 grams may be a game-changer for your health and wellness. There is a significant aversion by many to discuss or even pay much attention to our bowel health. I
get it; it is quite the *#*#*! topic! Your bowel habits are an incredibly important indicator and a less than subtle clue to our assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste that I urge you should never be ignored. While your normal habits may not be optimal, never ignore variations from what is normal for you! This article will focus on the soluble fibres as we tend to lack these when our typical daily diet is often full of processed and ultra-processed foods. So how do soluble fibres work? If you have ever prepared oatmeal, you can picture how it absorbs water and turns into a sticky, gel-like substance. Other fibres of this form are terrific for absorbing water within the bowel and slowing the movement of food through the intestines. As a rule, these forms of fibre are “soothing” to the gut lining. Soluble fibres provide “pre-biotic” nutrition source for the friendly bacteria that inhabit the gut and intestinal tract (our inner microbiome). As 80% of our immune system is located within the gut lining, this immune function role is better understood (and more important) than ever before. Soluble fibre foods are the regulators of intestinal health as they can improve a sluggish bowel and slow down one that can catch you at inappropriate times with urgency issues. Soluble fibre foods are typically low glycemic food sources that help with poor blood sugar control and can assist with regulating cholesterol and weight management. Brought to you by the:
MICHAEL MARINI, B.Sc. Phm. Pharmacist 328 Main Street, Port Dover 519-583-3784 1-888-233-8111
Some other soluble food sources are rice, barley, soy, quinoa, cornmeal, carrots, green bananas, beets, squash and pumpkin. For a more complete list, reach out to us at Dover Apothecary - your health is our passion. Managing health through nutritional strategies is the optimal solution. Educating our clients in lifestyle and nutrition strategies is an integral part of overall long-term health and wellness. Many supplements are scientifically researched and excellent tools to regulate bowel function along with the appropriate fibres. Magnesium, Vitamin C, Slippery Elm, Marshmallow Root, Cascara are just a few. In my experience, Probiotics are key players but are very specific to the individual and the issues they are having. ALWAYS consult a healthcare professional if changes occur in your digestive health – especially when nothing has changed in your normal routine. You know your body better than anyone, and it is critical to be the guardian for yourself and your loved ones. Stress, lack of activity, inadequate water consumption, disruption of friendly bacteria, certain medications, deficiency of specific nutrients and certain medical conditions are just a few of the things that can disrupt intestinal function. To book a Nutritional consult, please call (519) 410-3544 or email barb@ healthywellandwise.ca ** Please remember, increasing soluble fibre without enough insoluble fibre and increased water consumption can be

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK CMHA MENTAL HEALTH WEEK FROM MAY 3-9
GET READY TO #GETREAL ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL Held annually, the first full week of May, Mental Health Week creates an awareness of societal beliefs and perceptions about mental health. It helps promote behaviours and attitudes that foster well-being, support good mental health and create a culture of understanding and acceptance. Even in times of extreme anxiety and stress, mental health is something we can protect, not just something we can lose. This CMHA Mental Health Week, let’s focus on how naming, expressing, and dealing with our emotions - the ones we like and the ones we don’t - is important for our mental health. Heavy feelings lighten when you put them into words. When we voice our emotions, the pain gives way. Recognizing, labelling and accepting our feelings are all part of protecting and promoting good mental health for everyone. 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness or a mental health issue in any given year, but 5 in 5 of us - that’s all of us - has mental health. Regardless of whether or not we have a mental illness, our mental health is something we can protect and nurture. Everyone deserves to feel well, and understanding our emotions is a part of feeling well. Emotional well-being includes recognizing what influences our emotions, discovering how our emotions affect the way we think or act, taking action when our emotional a recipe for disaster that can clog the intestines and dry it out. Nobody wants to swallow a stick of dynamite to get things moving!! Certain medications and supplements or those with specific medical conditions should not take fibre supplements before checking with your Doctor, Pharmacist or qualified Health Care Professional. response isn’t helpful and learning to accept them. Emotional self-regulation, or the ability to label and shape your emotions, is a protective factor for good mental health. Relying on others and sharing our very normal feelings of sadness, fear, and worry is hugely important during this unusual time of stress, uncertainty and loss. Good mental health isn’t about being happy all the time. In fact, a mentally healthy life includes the full range of human emotions - even the uncomfortable ones like sadness, fear and anger. Feeling sad, angry and anxious at times is part of being human. Even if we try to push our difficult feelings down, they don't go away. Focusing on intense emotions doesn’t make them worse. In fact, one of the best ways to quiet our emotions is to give them a voice. Bottling up our emotions can make them grow or come out in other ways - not reacting to something negative that happens at work could end up making you more likely to yell at your children later, for example. If your emotions are overwhelming, persistent and/or are interfering with your daily functioning, it’s important to seek mental health support. So, let’s understand and name how we feel. Angry? Glad? Frustrated? Sad? It’s all good. This Mental Health Week, don’t be uncomfortably numb. #GetReal about how you feel. Name it, don’t numb it! I Wouldn’t Be Here
“I don’t know if I would be alive today if I didn’t find CMHA.” This is a common statement expressed by folks connected to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) for Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk.
It is also a reoccurring theme in a series of videos created by HubMedia for CHMA that focuses on the strengths of those living with mental health challenges, how they cope and how they are supported by CMHA.
A few months ago, I pitched this video series idea to CMHA to promote awareness and encourage conversation around mental health supports in our area. CMHA jumped on board, and Chris Atkins/One Media (the absolute best video guy in the county) was in as well! Chris saw my vision for the videos, and like always, he knocked it out of the park! With their passion and feel for the moment, Chris and his assistant, Joel, created a safe atmosphere for individuals to feel heard and share their stories. As I sat a few feet from these genuinely amazing folks, I asked questions and listened to their stories to understand how they cope. It was an emotional ride that demonstrated the human soul’s utter resiliency. We all have our ups and downs in life, but hearing these
stories, I realized that my days are a piece of cake compared to what these folks battle every day. Their determination and willingness to try, their depths, climbs, sorrow, and love are amazing. We as a society have so much to learn. It is important to connect with each other, now more so than ever. We all need help at some point.
To the folks interviewed, You are the leaders, the strong ones who see the value of life. The pain is intense, the cut is deep, and life is fragile, but the light grows a little every day. The strength slowly returns, and the person from within steps out into a new future. Chris, Joel and I have had many opportunities to work together, from elections, business videos to our Christmas mini-movies, but none of those touched us like the interviews we did with CMHA. Please take the time to watch and learn from these videos. Find them on Facebook, CMHA Brant Haldimand Norfolk
