master DJ such as Randy. Randy says that the music of Mr. Sinatra is still widely requested at many of the events he works, such as "Strangers in the Night," "New York, New York," "Come Fly With Me" and of course the biggest of all, "My Way," which was written by Canadian, Paul Anka. Give a listen to our audio podcast, "The Voice," at hubmedia.info.

THE VOICE

This month in the Boomer Music Experience, Randy and I talk about "The Voice," no not the TV show. The man, the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra!

Randy reminds us all that October is Canadian Cancer Society (Run for the Cure) month so get out and support.

Frank's singing career stretches all the way back to 1942 and goes right up to the mid-'90s. He started out in the Tommy Dorsey Big Band and then on to a solo career that competed with the likes of the Beatles, Dylan, Elvis and the Stones. He was right there in the midst of all the rock and roll legends!

LARRY MELLORS

The annual SALMONID FISH MIGRATION has begun. Whether or not we want to admit it, fall is approaching. This spring was late in arriving, and when it did show up, it brought rain and more rain. This resulted in very high-water levels. In the case of Pacific Salmon in Ontario, which are coho and chinook, they are entering the streams flowing into the Great Lakes in order to spawn. This is part of their reproduction cycle. The eggs are deposited in “redds.” Redds are the beds created within the streams by the salmon. The eggs fall into the void spaces created between the gravel/small rocks. Here they receive oxygen from the upwelling in the streambed. Once the eggs hatch into young salmon, they will begin to swim into the flowing stream current where they will continue to develop and grow. After two years these young salmon will migrate back to the Great Lakes where they will grow and become sexually mature. This usually is three to four years. They will then return to their natal stream to reproduce as adults. Pacific salmon die after they complete their spawning cycle. Brown trout and rainbow trout that are entering the streams at this time as well, do not die after they finish their spawning cycle. Rather they return to the Great Lakes, and as long as they have survived, will return to repeat their spawning process once more. Salmon and trout eat their own eggs, as well as each other’s. The eggs are rich in protein. This is certainly one of the bait offerings that work to catch them. Worms, flies, spoons and in-line spinners are effective as well. What triggers a spawning fish to take a bait is not clear. There are many theories that get tossed around when anglers meet. Is it curiosity? Aggression? Territorial behaviour? Or all of the before mentioned? To be successful, keep back from the banks of the rivers and streams and attempt to keep unnoticed. Otherwise, you will stress the fish, and they will shut down, making them very difficult to catch. When the fish are in the streams at this time of the year, it can be easy to “snag” or “foul” or illegally hook one of them. In Ontario, the hook must be in the mouth – not on the outside of the mouth or in the body. A fish hooked as such must be released immediately. To alleviate this problem, keep your bait off the bottom as you can inadvertently foul hook one. The fish look up to feed anyway so why run your offering under their line of vision. Get the bait in the strike zone to be successful. While real eggs are highly successful, there are many great alternatives. They are manufactured eggs, such as Berkley PowerBait Eggs. Their scent is very attractive serving Lake erie Boaters to a spawning fish. As well, if you know a person who for over 60 years ties flies, they can tie you an imitation egg using wool or egg yarn. Enjoy angling for these fish at this time of the year, but remember they are there to lay their eggs for a future generation. If you take one of these fish, you are removing potential young fish. Exercise selective harvest. If you are not going to eat the fish, then release it to swim away and reproduce. There is nothing like witnessing the salmonid reproducing. Enjoy and watch nature in its finest. Larry can be reached at lmello1647@rogers.com

Stories from Oxford County

DON’T BE SAD IT’S OVER, BE GL A D YOU GOT TO ENJOY IT. By Kathy Eller

Summer comes and goes, and this can be a melancholy time of year that is for sure. I know that feeling creeps in around last week of August, especially when the evenings get shorter. Even though most of us reading this don’t go back to school, we still get those dreaded back to school, end of summer feelings, and I do believe it gets worse as the years go on. For the last few years though, I look back on the summer and give gratitude for the flowers, the birds, walks on the beach and of course those lovely patio lunches. A big motivator can be to keep yourself in the moment. September and October are great months to still get outdoors, whether it is to clean up the garden or go for a nature walk in the woods or on a beach. Try shutting down those cell phones and tablets on a Sunday. It really does help to stay in the moment. Monarch butterflies are migrating south to Mexico for the winter. Daria from the Woodstock Field Naturalists’ Club says that it has been a good year and you can see lots of them in gardens and meadows around Oxford County as they fuel up for the long journey (e.g. the meadow of Upper Trail of the Burgess Trail in Woodstock). The best locations to see Monarchs as they migrate are along the Lake Erie shoreline: Port Burwell Provincial Park, Hawk Cliff Woods near Port Stanley, Point Pelee National Park. Woodstock Field Naturalist and the Ingersoll Nature Club will help you to learn more about species of birds, butterflies, other insects, and naming all those plants that you may consider weeds. Visit: https:// www.woodstockfieldnaturalists.org/ or https:// ingersollnatureclub.com/ for more information. Sitting down and having a relaxing read with The Hub is another way to stay in the moment. Just think summer will back before we know it.

Defining Your Circle of Excellence with Teresa Syms, Transformation Life & Career Coach, NLP Practitioner, Speaker and Award-winning Author

So, you have a sweet tooth‌ In our journey to reduce carbohydrates, starches and sugars, I have found a way to take a perennial favourite, peanut butter cookies, into a lighter living alternative. Nutritious and delicious these gluten-free, sugar-free favs will hit the spot. Not recommended for people with nut allergies. This version can be converted by simply changing the nut butter to a nut-free butter of your choice. The recipe I am using as the base is off the label of a popular peanut butter jar. Already on the right track in being gluten-free, we can take it a step further.

A Century of Secrets, is a multiple award-winning book, highlighting four generations of the author's family's dysfunction, abuse, alcoholism and violence. Plagued for generations by lies and secrets, violence and mental disorders, the readers will find themselves asking how anyone can come out of this environment whole, with a heart that beats with compassion and love for others? Teresa Syms, is the international, multiple award-winning, author and co-author who shares her true life experiences and celebrates the gifts she has been given in life. Through her writing and work as a Transformational Life Coach, Teresa clearly demonstrates that your past does not define your present or future.

Shape mixture into generous 1 tsp balls and place on the cookie sheet, leaving 5cm between. Flatten with a fork in the traditional criss-cross pattern. Bake at 350 degrees for 9 minutes. Packed with protein and the power of Stevia, these are great for calorie-reduced diets and gluten-free. Stevia is said to be about 50 times sweeter than sugar yet is zero calories. A little goes a long way. It has been shown to help with insulin resistance in Type 2 Diabetes and is safe despite its sweetness. This plant-based sweetener is often grown in Brazil. Also helps in weight reduction diets, and has been found to have no allergies or side effects. Learn more about Stevia and put this into action in your Lighter Living lifestyle. LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

THE SRI CHINMOY SELF-TRANSCENDENCE 3100 MILE RACE or HOW THEY SPENT THEIR SUMMER VACATIONS “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” - Haruki Murakami Sri Chinmoy was a spiritual leader who lived in New York City and died in 2007. He advocated “selftranscendence” by expanding one’s consciousness to conquer the mind’s perceived limitations through meditation and running. He believed that through ultra-distance running, individuals could discover unknown inner and outer capacities and get satisfaction from challenging their own limits. In the summer of 1997, the first 3100 mile race was organized. There were five starters. This summer, I became fascinated by the event and followed it daily. Difficult as it is to imagine, the race has been constructed as follows: the competitors travel a 0.5488 mile loop around a single city block in a Queens, New York neighbourhood. They run and walk entirely on city sidewalks not closed to the public. Laps are counted manually by volunteers as the runners pass through the aid station area. The race takes place over a 52 day period from June until August. The course is closed from midnight until 6:00 am each day, during which time the participants go to lodgings nearby. Thus, during the 18 hours available, one must average almost 60 miles daily in order to complete the 3100 miles within the allotted 52 days. The distance is equivalent to crossing the

United States from coast to coast. There are no rest days. New York City is hot in the summertime and is subject to frequent rainstorms. The Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race is truly a unique test of physical, mental and spiritual fortitude. This summer there were numerous rainy days, particularly in the early weeks and there were two heat waves, which sent temperatures close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Yet every morning, moments before 6 am, this year’s eight entrants would appear at the start line ready to continue their inner and outer quest toward personal self-transcendence. I was able to check in daily as there was a live cam set up at the aid station, which was viewable throughout the event. There was also a blog written by one of the race staff. The race has no sponsorship or financial rewards. Each runner and helper must give up their own time and pay to undertake the challenge. Why would anyone do so? Harita Davies from New Zealand, this year’s sole female, explained it this way, “I think so often in our lives that we fashion ourselves to be well within our comfort zones. It is only when you challenge these comfort zones that you find real fulfilment.” Each individual runner undertakes his/her personal journey. Today the race also inspires others around the world as it has been spot-lighted by international news outlets and has some online coverage. I have been fascinated by the simple yet dauntless nature of the undertaking. I am always interested in training preparation and coping measures to deal with inrace issues. As mentioned, there were eight entrants in 2019. None were from North America. Seven of the eight completed the full distance. For the overall winner, Asprihanal Aalto, it was an incredible fifteenth finish and eighth win. He is a Finnish mailman, which strikes me as the perfect occupation for him. The second place finisher, Nirbhasa Magee, came back, after suffering heatstroke mid-race, to set a new Irish record. A Russian, Vasu Duzihy, who won the last two years, came third this time. Harita, the New Zealander, finished in sixth place, a second completion and personal best. She summed up the attitude needed for success, “A huge part of

the experience of this race is to just keep going forward. When challenges arise you face them and try to figure them out. Do your best and have faith that everything will work out. She made me laugh at one moment. There was a barber on site, and the men were all getting their hair buzzed really short. Harita walked over to observe the scene. She wears her hair in two long braids down to her waist. She said she wanted to be a real ultrarunner like the men, took a pair of scissors, clipped about a centimetre off the end of each of the braids, smiled and carried on running. It was exciting at the end of the 52 days. Firsttime entrant Todor Dimitrov had been hampered mid-way through the race by injuries and sickness. Amazingly, he recovered to run hard the last few days, finishing on the last night just over one hour from the midnight cut-off. Interestingly for me, his only prior very long experience was one 10 Day Race, in which he finished with the same distance I did last year in New Jersey. The only non-finisher, Ushika Muckenhumer, battled shin splints for weeks, severely limiting his ability to run. Yet he showed up every morning and never gave up. He completed 2,777 miles, ably illustrating the concept that it is all about personal selftranscendence and doing what we can, given the circumstances we are in. I have participated in many Sri Chinmoy races over the years, including the Ottawa 24 Hour and the Kingston 6 Hour many times. Those two races are part of the Ontario Ultra Series. For me, it was all about the racing and the positive natures of the Sri Chinmoy race volunteers. I smile at what American Ray Krolewicz, one of the great ultrarunning pioneers and legends, remarked after his failed attempt at the 3100 Mile. He said he self-transcended so many times during the race that he ended up right back where he started. I competed against Ray a couple of times. Years ago, I contemplated and investigated crossing the continent by foot, but the stars did not align. I was always fine with that, but it was an intriguing thought.

The original came from a photo that was sent to Vic from a forest ranger friend who lived near the border north of here. thirty other volunteers spent the day putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls of Haldimand & Norfolk Women's Services. They revived the colours, creating a warm, inviting feel to a building that has provided a safe haven for so many over the years. After having a chat with two of the volunteers from Haldimand & Norfolk Women's Services, Katrina knew precisely how she could help! Katrina and area rep, Linda Dilks, filled in an application for the Colourful Communities Project. Linda Dilks, Account Development Manager, for PPG/Dulux Paints, explained that the Colourful Communities Project has been in place for several years and has accomplished many projects globally. A prime example was a seven-storey shelter in Sudbury which had been painted within a day! Linda sent out an email when she saw that Katrina's idea was approved. Within ten minutes of the email

Katrina also had many of her contractors help out for the day, one being Lyndsay from Marsden Precision Painting, who took the day away from her business to participate. Lyndsay explained, "It is such a great project to be able to help out with in our area!" Jane Scheel, Executive Director of Haldimand & Norfolk Women's Services, was thrilled with the opportunity provided by Katrina and PPG/Dulux to breathe new life into the building. Jane stated, "It was an overwhelming, amazing and generous donation that was much needed!" I wanted to share a number of the programs that Haldimand & Norfolk Women's Services provide with the community. Haldimand & Norfolk Women's Services is dedicated to a non-oppressive, social, political, and economic environment for women, their children and their communities.

Others may not agree with me, but as long as we show respect for each other, we have a future. By continuing to educate myself, I can be a better citizen, hopefully setting the right example for the next generation.

HOW WE GROW Recently I was in Ottawa for a couple of days and out for a stroll down by TD Place Stadium. When a gentleman stopped me and asked if I wanted a free ticket to the Ottawa Fury soccer game that was about to begin, I said sure why not! I had never been to a United Soccer League game before, and it was a beautiful day to sit in the sun and enjoy! I watch pretty much every sport on television, yet very little soccer. The Canadian Olympic women's team is the last game I remember watching. Live games, however, are a different story, and this was an excellent game to watch. Television does not do it justice. There was constant movement (only one injury in the first half), excellent flow and a lot of exciting plays. The Ottawa Fury seems to have developed a friendly family following. The number of kids wearing their soccer uniforms, hanging out and watching the game with their parents was great to see.

As I left the game, I could not help but feel proud as a Canadian as we continue to grow as a country together!

ALL IN IT TOGETHER I was standing in a long line at a rest stop on the 401, waiting to purchase a snack before continuing my drive home. Everywhere you looked, people were lined up at Tim's, A&W, Pizza Pizza and at the small variety store where I was (which was most likely the shortest of them all). I do enjoy watching folks at these types of stops. The diversity is genuinely Canadian, a cross-section of people from different ethnic backgrounds, languages from different cultures, families, young and old, kids on their way back to university, everyone mixing as their day went on. I was in line, and the gentleman behind me started to become restless. I could feel his tension building as we slowly made our way to the checkout. His grumbling became louder, just below the audible level as an older woman, from a different ethnic background, in front of me had lottery tickets, and it took a while for the clerk to process them. The guy behind me was now loudly complaining, "How dare she do that now. Doesn't she know that is why there are casinos if she wants to gamble." He made a few more overtones about "those" people. I finally had enough, and in a calm voice, I explained that she had to wait like the rest of us, "Relax." The lady finished, smiled at him and walked away. She could have easily ripped a strip off of him, but she took the high road and said, "Thank you for waiting."

It works because of a family-friendly price point for tickets that fits within a budget and provides a fun outing.

I want to think the guy was having a lousy day, but I knew there was more to it. As a country, we have come so far in our approach to equality, but we still have a long way to go!

Which shows they are building their base for the future. You know those kids are not going to forget those summer days watching their team.

Funny, he never complained when another family kept adding things to their list as they were checking out. Hmm, I wonder why...

I do think some of the more prominent sports in our country have forgotten the base that built them when no one came to their games. It was the kids that loved the game and as they grew up became fans, and passed it on. Soccer already has a rich world history with all cultures and with the diversity in Ottawa, you

In conclusion, all of our families, at some point, came to this country. We need to get over this "we own it" mentality and see that the world is changing. We need to educate and understand the importance of acceptance and growth as a diverse society. RESPECT!

- PORT D OV E R -

BY: DAV E SCOT T

Sitting close to the field were just average, everyday fan folk cheering on their team. The diversity of different cultures, languages and heritages of those attending bodes well for the country. Their shared interest in the game and team are conduits for acceptance and friendship beyond the gates of the stadium. You could see sports bringing people together!

know I think the Fury will continue to grow! More essential for me to this day, it restored a little faith in us as a country. We are all just everyday folks striving to enjoy the moments in our lives in harmony!

GROWING TOGE THER

his story today reflects the crossroads of individuals within Canadian society. It seems we take two steps forward and one step back. I believe we need to continue to grow, understand and appreciate what we all bring to the table in this country and around the world!

YOUR LIFE IS NOT A

SPECTATOR SPORT: ARE YOU PARTICIPATING IN YOUR GAME OF LIFE?

BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

the innate wisdom of the individual and allows active participation in health care decisions. In my practice, I like to use analogies quite often. It can set a framework for a concept or idea that suddenly allows clarity that can be put into action. When it comes to our health, we want and deserve to be the MVP. That means we must show up for every practice, every game and work our hardest. For many people, it is possible that they have no idea that the effort they expend can make such an impact on their overall health, wellness and quality of life. So many are merely existing as spectators, watching from the stands. Others are terrific sponsors, all about supporting others but not assisting themselves. Perhaps you are in uniform, waiting on the bench for direction and being told your position. We each deserve and should step into our right to be the MVP, engaged in the game and feeling like an athlete. A successful season always requires a team effort, lots of coaching and training and sometimes even a few trades to bring about a victory.

WHO IS ON THE ROSTER FOR YOUR WINNING TEAM? Each of us deserves to be educated and empowered when it comes to our health. At Dover Apothecary, we take your health care choices and decisions seriously. Having open lines of communication with your qualified health care professionals is a must. A patient-centred approach takes into consideration

Many people find that a blend of allopathic and complementary therapies will serve them best. Holistic approaches look at all aspects of our life – nutrition, lifestyle, mental and emotional wellbeing, exercise and activity habits, support systems and therapeutic use of supplements and nutraceuticals. Complementary therapies are a large part of preventive maintenance. Be selective and be certain that your whole team understands that “a good offence is the best defence.”

FUEL YOUR BODY WITH THE VERY BEST: A nutrient-dense diet fuels your body with the most concentrated, life-sustaining foods. When we are engaged in making food and lifestyle choices that are truly healthconscious, we are supporting our immune systems, and our cellular energy levels are boosted, we are being optimized to achieve our maximum potential. We can work better, play harder, function better and stay healthier with intentional eating. Diets that are inferior and full of processed and ultraprocessed foods detract from our overall health and wellbeing by draining us of wellness. Our energy and potential become limited and immune function depleted – essentially draining our batteries. Be the first pick on your winning team – get in the game whatever it takes. Just show up and surround yourself with people that want a winning outcome for you too! Barb Anstead NNCP 519-410-3544 barb@healthywellandwise.ca

TAKE CARE OF YOUR CURVES Scoliosis is a condition of the spine that causes an abnormal lateral curvature and comes in various varieties. Scoliosis can affect people of all ages with adolescents being highly susceptible due to growth spurts or pre-existing conditions, including cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Females are more likely to develop this condition due to differences in muscle and body structure with hereditary factors also potentially increasing likelihood. Although the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown, the condition can be managed through therapeutic strategies and individual practices. The spine is comprised of cervical, thoracic and lumbar components that scoliosis can affect. Cervical scoliosis is present through the neck region, thoracic scoliosis through the upper back region and lumbar scoliosis through the lower back region. Curvatures can be observed while bending forward to touch the toes, any humps or abnormal lateral variations can indicate scoliosis. The severity of scoliosis is indicated by the degree of variance from the midline of the body with 10-20 degrees being mild, 20-50 degrees being moderate and an over 50 degree variance being considered a severe case. Postural indications of scoliosis include unlevel shoulder height with one side elevated, unequal gaps between the arm and the trunk while standing as well as an uneven pelvis. Pain usually isn't a factor in the preliminary stages, and small curves can go unnoticed until adolescence, though unmanaged into adulthood, pain and a higher degree of curvature can result. Surgical interventions may be needed in more severe cases. However, non-surgical treatments can prevent the acceleration of scoliosis and manage pain symptoms. Bracing methods and modifying activities or areas that are ergonomically unsound can help manage scoliosis, as well as exercises, focused on core strengthening. Maintaining a healthy weight can decrease stress on the spine with postural training also being beneficial to manage this condition. Great Lakes Physiotherapy can offer strength building programs, postural training and manual therapy techniques to help manage the effects of scoliosis and other spinal conditions.

5th Annual Symposium on PTSD “Pathways to Protection: Preventing PTSD and Workplace Trauma” October 23, 2019, at the Paris Fairgrounds, Silver Street, Paris, ON Working in a stressful helping profession can be very rewarding, yet it is also one that can be emotionally and physically draining. The need for awareness of work-related trauma symptoms, as well as prevention techniques through professional and personal self-care, is essential. Compassion fatigue, burnout, vicarious and secondary trauma, PTSD and other types of psychological trauma are very common in the first responder and high-stress worker professions. Yet most do not come forward for fear of stigma or reprisal.

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA? Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter one’s sense of security, making them feel helpless in their environment. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life; however, any situation that leaves a person feeling overwhelmed can be traumatic, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. The more frightened and helpless a person feels, the more likely they are to be traumatized.

EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA CAN BE CAUSED BY: • One-time events, such as an accident, injury, violence, exposure to disturbing situations and incidents • Ongoing, relentless stress, marked alterations in physical arousal and reactivity, i.e. hyper-vigilance or difficulty concentrating The symposium will include Keynote Speaker, John Robertson who will speak on the topic of “Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.” We all know what physical health and safety are important in a workplace, however psychological health and safety are also critical in creating a safe workplace, free of psychological hazards. John’s presentation will help participants: understand the importance of this form of health and safety; address the factors of a safe and unsafe workplace; and provide information on how to make psychological health and safety just as important as physical health and safety in the workplace. There will also be a moderated Panel Presentation with individuals who have experienced work-related trauma. They will share their stories, as well as provide strategies to move forward and stay well. Other speakers will include Tim Metcalfe, Emergency Service Consultant, Public Services Health & Safety Association. Through his work as a consultant, Tim reviews what organizations currently have in place, what they have done, and determines what can be done in the future to continue supporting the mental health of workers. His presentation is relevant for all high-stress profession workplaces. The day will end with Markus Schneider, from Modo Yoga Brantford, speaking on “Stress on the Mind and Body.” He will explore some of the most effective, evidence-based strategies to minimize or eliminate the harmful effects of chronic stress.
