FEBRUARY2019

The music for each and every event has to align perfectly with the style of the occasion. Randy is a master at that, understanding the ebbs and flows of the gatherings.

IT'S TIME TO BOOK! With the holiday season done, I asked Randy if he gets a little downtime to recharge his batteries. He explained that he does in a way, but there are still events to do. Valentine's Day is on its way, and folks are starting to book for their 2019 special occasions, such as weddings, dances, theme parties and of course fashion shows! Randy does love his fashion shows!

Randy is constantly working on perfecting his craft, from the music to the outstanding presentation, he is professional all the way. Remember folks this is an excellent time to book Randy for your events in 2019.

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

HEATHER 'ANISH' ANDERSON - HIKE YOUR OWN HIKE - PART 3 Anderson stayed on the Appalachian Trail (AT) until May, before leaving when she reached New Hampshire. She had made the decision to hike her own hike, to do the trails the way she felt like doing them and not to be restricted by certain rules or by always being self-supported. Nor was she focused on speed alone. The White Mountains were still snowed in, so she took a flight to Albuquerque and a bus ride delivered her to Grants, New Mexico. From there, she hiked to the southern end of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in nine days, exchanging snow for dusty roads and boiling sun. Then she was off to the Pacific Coast Trail (PCT) to honour a pre-planned permit start date of May 22. Heather met her fiancé, and they hiked the whole trail together. That helped ease the mental strain of having to do so much of the journey solo. On the PCT, their nemeses were wildfires and smoke. Areas that she remembered as forests on previous hikes were now charred. By the time they reached the border of Canada in late July, Anderson had walked 4000 miles in 2018, more than she had ever hiked in a single year. Next, Anish went to Montana and proceeded southbound on the CDT. Wanting to complete as much of the trail as she could while the weather was still nice, she averaged over 30 miles a day, seldom taking time to shower or wash her clothes. When she arrived in northern Colorado in autumn, she knew it was time to head back east to complete the AT. Anish started at the AT’s northern terminus and raced against the incoming winter as she headed south to finish the uncompleted part, reaching the final spot

in New Hampshire only after being pummelled by full early winter ice storms in the White Mountains. At last, she returned to the CDT in Colorado and trekked back down to her final destination of Grants, New Mexico. The first person to ever complete the calendar year Triple Crown, Brian Robinson, had been following her progress and drove 15 hours from his home in California in order to surprise her and hike the final ten miles with her. In total, the journey had lasted 252 days, from March until November. Heather averaged 30 miles a day in what were often challenging conditions. She wore through a pair of shoes about every twenty days and hiked through 22 states. Anderson is now planning to take her first real break in five years. During those years, she did long thru-hikes every summer and trained for the infamous Barkley Marathons every winter. She is looking forward to enjoying the comforts of regular housing and showers, seeing family, planning her wedding and going on a book tour in 2019, as a nice change of pace, so to speak.

“The hard stuff never lasts that long. It’s just temporary.” - Heather Anderson

OUR COMMUNITY It seems that every time you step into one of our local Canadian Tire stores, they are supporting another volunteer organisation to help people in our community. These folks generously give their time and make a positive impact in our neighbourhood. Mary Kokus, President of the Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) Volunteers Association, talked about the gift wrapping that took place at the Simcoe Canadian Tire store. Here is what the amazing NGH volunteers accomplished: The Christmas gift wrapping commenced on December 7 and continued until December 23. Sixty-five volunteers worked a total of four hundred and thirty-four hours. One lady, Melva Brown worked eleven shifts. The convenors for the event were Iris Smith and Linda Van Daele. Mary stated, "Our Volunteer Association truly appreciates Canadian Tire's assistance in allowing us to use their store for our fundraiser. We made a profit of $2,606.14. We would also like to thank the public for donating to us. We are grateful for their support." Mary explained the hospital theme this year is the Year of the Cat 2.0. The current CT Scanner has served its purpose over the last twelve years providing scans for 76,992 folks. Now the time has come to upgrade with a new scanner which will provide increased scanning speed and provide a high-quality image.. FISHY BITS The 2019 year has begun and with it is a huge lineup of trade shows which may interest many of you. First off is the Toronto International Boat Show, from January 18 to 27. If you are interested in what is new for 2019 in the boating world, this is a must see show as it is an “International” show. This show does not only highlight power and sail boats, but stand-up paddle boards, inflatables, kayaks and canoes. There are seminars for everyone and for every ability, no matter what your on-the-water pleasure may be. Next up is the Spring Fishing & Boat Show in Toronto on February 15 to 18. This is a great show to attend and purchase the latest new tackle along with your favourites. It is the time to re-stock your tackle boxes. There is a great list of presenters during each day. The London Boat, Fishing & Outdoor Show follows the next weekend. This is the premiere show for southwestern Ontario. This show is held from February 22 to 24. The oldest outdoor show for Ontario is the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show. The dates for this show are March 13 to 17. This show caters to all people involved in participating in the outdoors, whether angling, hunting, boating, camping, rock climbing, and much more. These shows allow you the ability to touch and feel new products, as well as gain some inside knowledge from pro-staff and insiders. Everyone is there for your convenience. I will be involved at many of the exhibitor’s booths at each of these shows. Please drop by to say hello and ask questions. Are you an angler that likes to fish your artificial baits very fast? Or an angler that once you get that fish up on top of the water and want to keep it there and out of the cover below? Then a fast retrieve speed is what you’re looking for. Well, Abu Garcia has just the reel for you. For 2019 look no further than the Abu Garcia Revo Rocket Low Profile baitcast reel. This reel sports a 10.1:1 gear ratio. What does this mean? Well for every turn of the handle you retrieve an incredible 41” of line! Humminbird has enhanced their range capability on the Solix G2 Side Imaging and Down Imaging units. In the past, the effective range was between 75 and 95 feet. With the new enhancement that range has been increased to 200 feet on each side of the side imaging feature and 200 feet of depth on the down imaging feature. This 2000 foot range would be in best case scenarios. Minn Kota has now added “Built-in Mega Down Imaging” in its trolling motors. What this means is the Mega Down Imaging transducer will now be integrated into the trolling motor. Previous to this you had to add an external transducer. This meant exposed wiring and securing a transducer externally to the trolling motor. This is a huge development. The examples above, in regards to 2019 new products, are only a sample of what these specific companies have done. But the other companies have all done the same, either serving Lake erie Boaters with new product, or enhanced the features on existing for over 60 years products. That is why trade shows are important to you as a consumer. They are there to provide education so when you do purchase you are an informed buyer. For anyone who would like to try fly casting, I am holding a fly casting clinic at Syl Apps Community Centre, 51 William Street, Paris from 9:00 until 11:00 am every Friday until March 29. This is an indoor heated facility. The cost is $5.00 per person for the two hours. Bring your own equipment or I will have equipment there for you to use. See you at the shows! Thank You Mr. Keegan. June 15, 1923 - December 05, 2018

By: Dave Scott

You never really know someone until you have the opportunity to sit down with them and have a one to one chat. We all make assumptions about folks before we meet them, we hear the whispers about them and take it as gospel. As a young lad in high school, I remember that being precisely the case. Our vice principal was a big man who seemed to tower over the students. He was tall and fit, with what I always perceived as a stern look on his face. Rumour had it he was a military man who had fought in WWII… he was not to be messed with. That image stuck with me until six or seven years ago when an opportunity arose to interview the man for a Remembrance Day piece for our magazine. I have to be honest, I was a little nervous at the time with my recorder in hand and my notebook ready to go. I knocked on the door and was greeted by his wife, Margaret, who called for him to come meet his guest. Ken Keegan wasn’t as tall as I remembered, and he greeted me with a smile and a soft hello as we headed to his office to chat. I excitedly told him that I was one of his students from PDCS. I'm not sure why I said it, I think I was just trying to make that common connection for us to share. He started by telling me about the military background of his family; his father and grandfather had served as well. We talked about basic training, learning to fly and about picking his crew basically by going with his gut feeling. There wasn’t a lot of time to get to know each other at that point. He knew I had written a piece on Ike Hewitt a year or two earlier, so Ken pulled out his own flight log for me to take a look. At the tender age of 19, he had flown 36 missions as a captain with a crew aboard his plane… responsible for their lives. Opening that log was like stepping back in time. I could sense the emotional impact that it brought with the recounting of each flight. Ken's memory was so sharp that he literally knew every mission like he had flown it yesterday. It was all there in his handwriting, time, date and destination. With each word he read, the wound reopened, slowly exposing the boy who took flight, his eyes fixed almost in a glaze, his smile slipping away. There was one particular mission where they were dropping bombs and a plane, with a friend of his on it, was hit by enemy fire. The plane began to spiral towards the earth. Ken and his crew followed as he urged the other plane to pull up. Pull up! Ken's eyes were fixed on the aircraft in front, until he too was dangerously close to crashing. The other plane hit, and his friend perished. Ken turned away from me and reached for a tissue as the tears fell softly down his cheeks. My heart could feel Ken's anguish; for this memory that he most likely recounted every day of his life! We can never understand what was truly given… heart, soul, body, physically and mentally of these men and women… but we sure as hell can say Thank You!

'WINTER SUGAR BUSH' by: Vic Gibbons

The man of great works.

This painting, entitled Winter Sugar Bush, provides the perfect backdrop for the season as we bundle up against the cold and plod our way in the snow. Vic came across this beauty as he was attempting to persuade his cat, Chuck, out from behind some old works he had done that were stored in his back room! He believes he painted it in the mid-seventies from a photo he had taken at a local farm. When we sat down for our morning coffee, the reflection of the era in which Vic painted this piece brought back a flood of memories of his life at that time. It has been interesting to see over these last few years how certain pieces act as a diary into Vic’s life… the stories are always fun, and I want to thank Vic for sharing them with us.

DETOX, CLEANSE or LIFESTYLE CHANGE?

PART 1

BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY MAKING SENSE OF THE CHOICES: With more than 28 years in the Natural Health field, one controversial topic continues to baffle most individuals – Detox and/or Cleanses. Articles and advertising abound from every direction - touting it as a must do, one size fits all, for everything that ails us including excess holiday weight. Should you do one? Where do you start? Which one should you choose? How do you do one? Why do people do them? Are they okay for everyone? Which products should I choose? And the list of questions continues… but often, the answers are vague at best, with many differing and often erroneous recommendations on the subject.

WHAT IS A DETOX/CLEANSE? For the purpose of this article, detoxification is the physiological or medicinal process of removing toxic substances or qualities from the body usually derived from dietary or lifestyle choices and environmental exposures. It is an intentional holistic therapeutic or medical treatment involving abstention and avoidance of substances to free the body of toxins/substances. The intended result is typically to improve overall health, vitality, immune function and often weight reduction. It is used in many clinics around the world as a medically and/ or professionally directed therapy for those with serious health issues. A Cleanse, under this context, is typically a regimen intended to remove impurities from the body or organs and promote health. These terms are often used synonymously, often incorporating products or supplements as well as nutritional and other strategies.

THE GOOD: The intended effect of a detox or cleanse is clearly to promote better overall health. Whether you are looking for better energy levels, immune function, digestion, weight control, pain reduction, allergy relief etc. – the intent clearly is that something is going to be improved. THE BAD: The bad news is that many people aren’t going to feel fantastic during the first few days of this process and not doing it with the appropriate professional guidance and supervision can very easily lead to more than just a few days of feeling “Hangry,” tired and achy. THE UGLY: Detox and Cleanse processes are not for everyone! A clear health history is key to identifying your toxin exposure, an integral part of the equation prior to starting any program. Certain substances stored within our bodies can become even more harmful to us when disturbed if our organs of elimination are not up to the task. Our Phase 1 and Phase 2 detox pathways need to be up to the task! Others need to be chelated/bound to a substance to remove them safely and not have the toxins recirculated in our bodies. Symptoms of overload can be exhibited in many ways (headache/body ache, excessive fatigue, skin irritations, bad breath and body odour, digestive changes, bowel habit changes etc.) but can also be minimised and avoided in many cases. Occasionally we will seem to go backwards before we move forward. Sound complicated? It can be - know when to seek a qualified health professional to answer your questions and explore the correct options for you. There are far too many products on the market that can be downright dangerous under certain circumstances. It’s the time of year that everyone wants to get out of the house as we are starting to feel cooped up as the long winter drags on. This inspired me to share this month about travelling with home oxygen, whether it’s a day trip or a trip to a warmer climate, please keep the following tips in mind. When taking a day trip or visiting with family & friends (not staying overnight) taking your portable oxygen system will suffice for this (whether it is cylinders/tanks or a portable oxygen concentrator). Remember if you use a battery powered system to bring your charging cords or if you use oxygen tanks bring enough in the event you end up being

longer than you expected. If you are planning to go away where you are going to spend the night or multiple nights, you will want to plan ahead a little bit. The best plan for this is to take your stationary system with you, this will allow you to have continuous flow and be able to move around the house you are visiting freely. It is also ideal to use a stationary system when sleeping and for longer periods of time. Your provider can also supply you with different equipment better designed for travel or smaller stationary units for sleeping. If you are going to take a trip by flight, if you will need to notify your airline, as well, you will need to provide the airline with some medical information and your oxygen provider must be aware to ensure you have proper equipment, approved by the FAA. Every airline has different paperwork requirements for people travelling with oxygen, so when you are booking the flight, you need to notify the airline in order to ensure everything is in line. If you have any questions about this, it is best to call and double check with your provider.

WHAT A PAIN IN THE NECK Neck pain is extremely common amongst the adult population with over 85% of people aged over 50 experiencing some form of cervical distress. More often than not, the cause of such neck pain is age-related and associated with everyday wear and tear of the cervical vertebrae over time, however, over recent years adolescents have had increased complaints of cervical pain and discomfort due to advancing technologies and poor neck and shoulder posture. The research into adolescent stresses on the cervical spine caused by postures and positioning has increased in the past decade due to a man-made phenomenon called texting. The term "text neck" refers to the escalation in degenerative properties relating to increased postural deformities caused by the excessive bending of the neck while texting or working with any handheld electronic device. A fully grown head weighs approximately 5kg resulting in 5kg of stress placed on the cervical vertebrae while in a neutral position, however, sustained flexion while texting or using a handheld device at 30 deg flexion increases the stress placed on the vertebrae to 17kg and at 60 deg up to 27kg. The effects of forward head flexion while studying or using electronics can transcend pain and contribute to other problems like nearsightedness, eye strain and hyperkyphosis which is an excessive curvature of the thoracic spine from dropping the neck and rounding the shoulders (also known as hunchback). This specific affliction is of growing concern as short term effects are not overly noticeable, but the long term effects into adulthood could affect quality of life. Some primary prevention strategies to decrease the severity of cervical pain in adolescents is limiting screen and phone time while also trying to keep the neck in a neutral position while studying or using electronic devices. Great Lakes Physiotherapy can offer cervical therapy treatments and assessments to all ages if pain is persistent or has been long-lasting. Treatments can decrease pain and increase cervical range of motion so you can see the world from all angles with comfort and ease!

8 TIPS FOR WINTER WALKING

Simcoe, ON 519.429.3678 • Delhi, ON 519.582.2552

Take a moment to read this great advice from the Canadian Chiropractic Association 1. Choose the right footwear: there are some great options for winter boots that provide slip-resistance. Look for these features: rubber soles, non-slip tread. 2. Plan ahead: Give yourself extra travel time so you can walk without being rushed. 3. Don’t be distracted: Avoid walking and using your phone at the same time. 4. Look out for ice: Avoid icy patches when possible. When in doubt, assume that all dark and wet pavement surfaces are slippery. 5. Be prepared: If you don’t have salt for your stairs, driveway, or walkway, use sand or non-clumping cat litter to sprinkle on icy surfaces outdoors. If possible, only walk on paths that receive maintenance. Don’t take shortcuts where snow isn’t regularly removed. 6. Use support: Use handrails when available and steady yourself on the door frame of your car when getting in & out of a vehicle. 7. Don’t compromise your balance: Avoid carrying items in your arms as that may cause you to be unbalanced. Walking with your arms swinging at your sides is the best way to maintain balance. Make sure to keep your hands out of your pockets to help with balance and walking posture (don’t forget your gloves). 8. Walk like a penguin: When the terrain is super slippery, try practising these “penguin-like” techniques for stability:

► Keep your feet “flat-footed” (place your whole foot down at once—this also slows your walking speed)

► Take short strides or shuffle your feet forward

► Keep your knees slightly bent and feet pointed out. Lean forward slightly

Last month we talked about the effects the winter conditions have on our hair such as Split Ends, Dry Scalp and Frizz. The last two we would like to bring to your attention are: STATIC - The dreaded winter static. Keep moisture locked into your hair with a cuticle sealer. Avoid touching your hair too much as this will make the static worse. Also, keeping your combs and brushes wrapped in dryer sheets will make a big difference. FLAT HAIR - Gone is the summer humidity and with it your more full looking hair. Try not to apply your conditioner directly onto your scalp, just concentrate on your lengths and ends. You may also need more layers cut into your hair in the winter months for an added boost, or to use a Volumizing root spray. Come on in for any advice on the right products to help your hair look its best! Book your appointment today and let our staff pamper you and your hair! 355 Main St, Port Dover, ON N0A 1N0 www.bladesalon.ca 519-583-2021

TIPS FOR THE VALENTINE’S DAY BLUES Pink, red and purple? Classic colours for Valentine's Day. But don't forget blue! According to the Canadian Mental Health Association feelings of sadness, anxiety and loneliness are not uncommon both during and after the build-up to February's tribute to romance and relationships. People with good social support might get a boost this time of year, but we should remember that for others, it's a reminder that they may not have what they want or expect in their relationships and that can lead to lowering their mood or increase their anxiety. Here are some tips to get through the Valentine's hoopla with your mental health intact: • Take time to appreciate the most important person in your life: YOU! • Being single can be fun. • Remember that romance may come and go, but good friends and family stick around. • Take a social media timeout if the messages aren't helping.
