BUYING THE RIGHT SHOES...

Overtraining is a common theme in running these days. We tend to think more is better and that we need to push a little harder every time we go out for a run. One more lap. I'm not tired. Just a little farther. I can run in this heat. We seem to forget that we may be doing more harm than good! As many a veteran runner will tell you, be mindful of your body. What that means is, listen to what your body is saying. It will give you hints when you need to take a break, slow down or call it a day. One common indication of overtraining is when the quality of your runs become weaker and slower, instead of stronger and faster. You simply need a few days of rest. When aches and pains seem to be piling up steadily, take time to rest and recharge your body. Learning to listen to your body is the key to long-term success in your running endeavours.

Shop for shoes in the afternoon – your feet usually swell as the day progresses so make sure your new shoes will accommodate that. Wear the same type of socks shopping that you would wear in the new shoes. Have both feet measured while standing and purchase footwear for the larger foot. Spend time walking around in the new shoes at the store; if you are rationalizing whether they will stretch or not, the shoe is not a good fit. TRUST YOUR OWN COMFORT rather than the size of the shoe or the description.
I had the opportunity to meet the new owner of Simcoe Natural Foods, Laura Maguire, who is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. Laura grew up in Binbrook and settled with her husband in Selkirk where they raised their children. They spent 14 years in Toronto before moving back to the area a year and a half ago. Laura feels blessed to have this opportunity to step into such a well-established business. She told me it all started when her husband was shopping at Simcoe Natural Foods and was chatting with Gail, who said she was looking to retire. Laura and her husband talked about the store, and with the help of Venture Norfolk and Gail, it all came together! Laura looks forward to serving all the current customers and welcomes everyone to stop by and say hello!
is an investment in foot health. Let’s start with tracing your feet on a piece of paper while you are standing. Look in your closet, take your shoes and place them on your tracing. Your "most comfortable" shoes will probably be the shoes that match the outline of your feet. Are you ready to replace your shoes? Here are a few tips.
