8. RESPONSE BY BRIDE & GROOM - is the final speech of the evening traditionally. This is where the Bride & Groom thank everyone for attending, particularly those guests that travelled a great distance, thank their wedding attendants, and present their comments to their guests.

You can add a number of additional toasts if you wish. These could include toasts to Grandparents etc.

Toasting is normally carried out during the "Coffee & Dessert" portion of the dinner.

This toast is usually delivered by a friend of the Bride or of the bride's family. This should be someone who has witnessed the bride through her life and is able to comment on her growth from a child to a woman. Frequently this is an aunt or uncle for example.

PATIENCE. It is never easy to wait for something when we want it.

We grow restless by the minute, and we believe that our cravings need to be fulfilled. With today's technology, we expect things to happen instantly, it has become the norm. Think back for a moment when many of us were kids, cartoons were on Saturday morning, and that was basically it. When our own kids were young, they could watch a cartoon every morning if we would've let them.

Nowadays cartoons are on 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Perhaps, that is way too much!

Books are fading like the pages they were written on.

No one looks information up in a book anymore, they just Google it. Our phones are everything. We are trained to look at them every 3-5 minutes. Each little ding could be that message we just have to see! Life changes quicker than I can think anymore!

But you know, a while back my son and I had the opportunity to camp with our friends in Algonquin Park.

The weather was perfect that first day, the sun was warm with just a slight wind from the north. Everyone had put their phones away; there was no cell reception anyway.

The day was filled with canoeing, swimming, fishing and laughter. The conversation was a welcome change from the life of cell phones. As night approached, I turned in and began to read a book, listening to the boys around the fire. You could hear and feel their enthusiasm.

Some of the boys slept under the stars that crisp night.

I awoke at 5:30 a.m., quickly lit the stove and put my coffee on. As I looked out over the water, I could see the sun reflecting off a sign on the island in the middle of the lake. Oh, I wanted the heat of that sun, but it was going to take a while to reach our campsite. I thought of grabbing a canoe and paddling over to bask in it.

Instead, I just got comfy on the rock with my coffee, sat patiently and waited. I watched as the ducks worked themselves into the rays of the sun and the occasional fish jumped, making the wait seem like its own minimovie. Then, slowly the sun’s glow spread and touched the end of the rocks. I eased over to the warmth and let it slowly wind its way through me.

There are some things we can't control, and it is amazing what a little patience can do for the soul!

MAYBE YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN On the evening of July 27, 2018, I drove into the Asticou Centre, a federal government facility in Gatineau, Quebec. The oldest 24 hour race in the world, first staged in 1981 and known as the Ottawa 24 Hour, would be starting at 8 a.m. the next day. I wanted to make sure I could find the venue as it was a new location for the event (one I have run a number of times, beginning in 1999, but most recently back in 2011). After driving around a bit, I saw a group of tents in the distance. I pulled up and parked.

As soon as I got out of my car, a man I did not recognize said, “Hi Charlie.” I took that to be a good omen. I saw my friend, George, and we had a lengthy conversation about race particulars and life in general.

I set up my minimalist table and chair beside his tent.

After dark, I headed off to get some dinner and then a motel sleep.

I arrived back at 7:15 a.m., giving me plenty of time for some hellos and to get my race bib and instructions.

The course is a 1.2 mile asphalt road around the Centre. At the sign-in table, I was told my lap counter would be Sylvie and that she had requested to have me. I took that to be another good omen. She was intending to stay as one of the counters for the full 24 hours and I was planning on going straight through with no sleep either.

When the race began, I immediately joined in with an easy running group, some of whom I knew. We had barely started when my old friend Ron said to another long-time ultrarunner, “I’ve got some bad news for you Sue.” She responded, “Uh-huh. What is it?” Ron replied, “I won’t be able to have sex with you at 2 am this year, I’m getting too old.” We were off on our little 24 hour adventure.

I soon separated to walk and jog by myself at a very easy pace. I have done a number of these events and I know that almost all participants experience

a marked slowdown in the second half. There is a saying in races of a day or more, “Manage the day and own the night.” In other words, be very conservative during the early part of the race and the heat of the day and do your harder running during the cooler, peaceful night-time hours. I alternated slow running with purposeful walking for the first few hours, making sure to hydrate well and take in a decent amount of nutrition, including gels and also real food from the aid station such as mashed potatoes, peanut butter and jam sandwiches and soup.

In the early afternoon, the cloud cover cleared and it really heated up. A group of four old veteran friends, including myself, hooked up and we walked for a few hours through the hottest part of the day. One of the reasons I had signed up was to meet up with these pals from the old days and we had a great time catching up. Some medical episodes were revealed as we are all in our seventies, but mostly we shared our stories and laughed like crazy. It was fun just being one of the boys talking about the old glory days and favourite memories. We know many of the same people and thus many of the characters in one another’s tales.

At one point, just Ron and I were walking together. As we were passing by a young runner, he immediately asked, “Are you married?” and she answered, “No, not at the moment and, by the way, I’ve heard of you.” Soon after, Ron told me about being with his dad when he was dying. From his death bed he said, “Remember son, there’s more to life than sex.” Ron then added, “But then he died and I never found out what the other thing was.” He ended that, and most of his stories, with a maniacal laugh. We passed the afternoon in great fashion with the miles piling up slowly, but easily.

When the shadows had covered much of the course and the temperature dropped a little, I knew it was time for me to move on. I felt fine and was in an excellent mood so I went back to being on my own and started doing some running again. At half way I stopped to clean up my feet and change my shoes.

After 12 hours, I had completed only just over 71 km

but had no body issues. I was tied for 22nd place in the field of 35.

Over the next several hours there were rain showers and some thunder. My friend George’s wife, Erlinda, would put my sports bag and extra shoes in their tent whenever rain was imminent so I was well looked after.

One of my goals for this event was to practice eating mostly regular food instead of simply gels. I took something from the aid station at least every other lap, whatever looked most appealing and I had frequent drinks, including a lot of ginger ale, which tasted refreshing and kept my stomach settled. Also, one of the volunteers made me a couple of cheese sandwiches and warmed up some lentil soup.

14th place. This gave me a little lift and let me know that I was in second among the old-timers. For a long time I remained less than one lap behind Hans, who was first among the 70 year olds. I never saw him but imagined that I was catching up as I was now running more and faster. However, at the end of one lap, near the aid station, he caught me! So he was now a full lap, or over one mile, ahead of me. But he didn’t look too strong as he asked me what time it was and how many laps I had done. I told him not to worry about me and to try to stay moving steadily. Nonetheless, I was able to go ahead easily and gained the full lap back fairly readily. He realized it was not going to be possible for him to hold me off and by the end I was well ahead.

I remained calm and relaxed as I moved steadily around the course, gradually increasing the amount I was running each lap. My only real concern was stumbling over any of the many speed bumps scattered along the road. It took me an incredibly long time during the night to remember accurately where they all were.

When I finished my final loop a few minutes before 8 a.m., it was sunny and warm. I felt quite fresh and could have kept going. That is the way I always hope to feel at the end, but usually don’t. I had worked my way up to 10th place male and was first in my age group with a total of 91 miles (146.6 km). I had covered the 5th greatest distance of any competitor over the final 12 hours.

THE BOBBER Almost all anglers will have used the old traditional red and white bobber at one time or another when they were fishing. You know the one – round like a ball with red on the top half and white on the bottom half.

For the beginner angler nothing can be more discouraging than going on a fishing trip and not catch a single fish. If you do not care what size or as to what type of fish tugs on your fishing line, then head to the water armed with a bobber rig and an earthworm. It’s a very inexpensive rig for fishing. The best news – it attracts most freshwater species of fish.

I cannot stress enough to think small when using a bobber rig. A small hook will fit inside the mouth of a small fish, for instance a perch, and yet be big enough to catch a big fish – as an example, a three pound smallmouth bass. I recommend using one-half of a night crawler versus the whole worm. If you thread a full earthworm onto your hook normally what happens is the fish peck at the worm and tears pieces off. For the bobber, use a small one rather than a large one. The smaller one is more sensitive to detect the gentlest bite and offers less resistance to the fish so it can eat the worm easily. Lastly, keep a short distance between the bobber and the hook. Normally one to two feet is good. This will get your bait offering in front of the fish and keep you from getting hung up on the bottom. Crimp a small spit-shot sinker on your fishing line just below the bobber.

In most cases do not be afraid to change your live bait offering frequently. A drowned worm looks lifeless and a minnow that has died and does not move doesn’t attract many fish. On a recent perch fishing trip we found we would only get a bite if the minnow was alive and swimming.

The bobber has become more sophisticated over the years. The centrepin (float) anglers use custom-shaped floats while the fly angler uses indicators. No matter the shape or name they are used for the same purpose, to catch more fish. There is no doubt the bobber makes you a more successful angler!

We were recently visiting friends on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario that had caught large numbers of smallmouth bass this summer while fishing from the public dock. Their secret – a bobber rig and a half of a dew worm. So many anglers, including many children, were unsuccessful while they landed many. They retied many of the children’s rods with a bobber rig and to the delight of the children they also caught many smallmouth bass as well. Over the many weeks they have run out of “The Bobber.”

CAR CARE CHRONICLES It’s that time of year again – back to school time. Canada Safety Council would like to continue to remind parents and guardians to teach your children about safe travel to and from school. Take the time to know the rules and educate your children about safe conduct when using and sharing roadways, whether it be by school bus, car, bicycle or by foot.

► TRAVEL BY SCHOOL BUS Research conducted

by Transport Canada shows that school bus travel is one of the safest methods of transportation. It is 16 times safer than travelling in a family car per passenger/kilometre of travel. Although school buses have an excellent safety record, mishaps can happen.

These mishaps can include instances where children are injured while riding on the bus. It is more common however, for injuries to be sustained once outside the bus, including being hit by their own school bus or other vehicles.

Every driver must remember that when approaching a stopped school bus (on a non-divided road) that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing and side stop sign out, must stop before reaching the bus and must not proceed until the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.

Here are some safety tips to share with children to ensure safe travel.

Getting to and on the school bus: 1. Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pick up time. Children should never run after the school bus to try to catch it. If you miss the bus, go back home or if you are at school, report to a teacher.

2. Stay on the sidewalk, well away from the roadway and stay back until the bus has come to a full stop and the door opens.

3. If your child needs to cross the street, teach them to look to the left, then to the right, and to the left once more before crossing the street.

4. Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus.

Riding on the school bus: 5. Take a seat as quickly as possible, put belongings under the seat and stay seated.

6. Never stick anything out of the window, including arms or heads.

7. Save food for snack time at school or until you get home.

After riding on the school bus: 9. When getting off the bus: take two large steps away from bus. If you must walk in front of the bus, walk ahead at least three metres (10 giant steps).

10. The driver must be able to see you and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. Cross in a single file.

11. If a child drops something near or under the school bus, they should never attempt to retrieve it without the driver’s permission.

► TRAVEL BY CAR Parents and guardians must respect their child’s school safety measures for dropping off and picking up their children at school.

Every effort must be made to avoid collision and injury by refraining to create hazardous situations of traffic congestion and unsafe driving practices within the school zone. Respect posted speed limits, and designated drop-off and pick-up areas. ► TRAVEL BY BICYCLE To ride a bicycle to and from school, children must be mature enough (minimum 9 – 12 years old), and must have enough experience. The rider should be able to scan ahead and check behind without swerving.

To ensure safe cycling, young cyclists must: Wear a properly-fitted helmet, and have clothes that are suited for cycling (e.g. their pants tucked in).

order. The bike should have a regular maintenance checkup and should have a bell. It is also a good idea to have a safety flag.

Know and obey all traffic rules, signs and signals. They must signal turns and stops. Ride in a straight line in the same direction as traffic and stop at every stop sign.

Be predictable to other road users by riding with the traffic usually on the right hand side of the roadway.

Never ride in the dark. If an older child must ride in the dark, make sure that reflective clothing and nightaccessories (e.g. reflectors and lights) are used.

► WALKING TO SCHOOL Many children use roadways to make their way to and from school. Parents and guardians must review road safety rules with their children and the importance of not accepting rides or any invitations from strangers. It is best to walk with a buddy and keep focused on getting straight home.

To keep safe on roads, children pedestrians must: Find a safe and direct route to school with the help of their

parents. Hazards should be identified (train tracks, busy intersections, etc.) and a designated route with safety rules should be established.

Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, use the left side of the road facing traffic.

Cross streets only at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right and then left again before proceeding, even at intersections with pedestrian walk signs.

Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross.

Prevention is the key to safety. With education and awareness, all children should be able to get safely to school and home again. Take the time to share these valuable rules and tips with your children.

TIPS & ADVICE UNDER PRESSURE… It's not just a Queen Song!

Sometimes when our water gets low, we lose our water pressure and then we have to go out and prime the pump to correct the situation.

The guys at The World of Plumbing offered this advice if you are having water pressure issues.

If it's an isolated faucet that seems to have low pressure check that the aerator is clean.

If it's happening everywhere in the house, there are many more possibilities.

Check that all valves are open and operating properly.

There could be something caught or broken inside the pump.

A suction leak can cause issues such as a cracked pipe, pinhole in a fitting or the suction point is above the level of water in the ground, etc.

Is it a quality pump? Cheaper pumps do not last as long and may not generate the required pressure.

If it happens repeatedly, have it corrected ASAP, it could be doing damage to the pump which can translate to some costly repairs in the future.

I was telling Vic about our recent trip to the interior of Algonquin Park, an annual father-son event these past few years. I told him that one of the highlights this year was coming across a young bull moose feeding at the water's edge. It was a sight to see.

Sure enough on my next visit, sitting on the easel was this gem, Bull Moose in the wintertime. Vic had been cleaning out the back room when he remembered our conversation and decided that it was time to frame up his last seven Bull Moose prints.

It escaped him just when he did the moose painting. He chuckled and said, "A long time ago!"

Overtraining is a common theme in running these days.

We tend to think more is better and that we need to push a little harder every time we go out for a run. One more lap. I'm not tired. Just a little farther. I can run in this heat. We seem to forget that we may be doing more harm than good!

As many a veteran runner will tell you, be mindful of your body. What that means is, listen to what your body is saying. It will give you hints when you need to take a break, slow down or call it a day.

One common indication of overtraining is when the quality of your runs become weaker and slower, instead of stronger and faster.

You simply need a few days of rest.

When aches and pains seem to be piling up steadily, take time to rest and recharge your body.

Learning to listen to your body is the key to long-term success in your running endeavours.

Shop for shoes in the afternoon – your feet usually swell as the day progresses so make sure your new shoes will accommodate that.

Wear the same type of socks shopping that you would wear in the new shoes.

Have both feet measured while standing and purchase footwear for the larger foot.

WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY IS ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2018 Suicide. It’s a difficult topic to bring up. However, when someone talks about suicide or brings up concern for a loved one, it’s important to take action and seek help quickly.

Suicide means that someone ends their life on purpose. However, people who die by suicide or attempt suicide may not really want to end their life. Suicide may seem like the only way to deal with difficult feelings or situations, such as feeling hopeless, helpless, desperate and alone.

About 4,000 Canadians die by suicide every year. Suicide is the second-most common cause of death among young people, but men in their 40’s and 50’s have the highest rate of suicide. While women are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide than men, men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women.

Source: Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention Many different situations and experiences can lead someone to consider suicide.

KNOWN RISK FACTORS FOR SUICIDE INCLUDE: • A previous suicide attempt • Family history of suicidal behaviour • A serious physical or mental illness • Problems with drugs or alcohol • A major loss, such as the death of a loved one, unemployment, or divorce • Major life changes or transitions, like those experienced by teenagers and seniors • Social isolation or lack of a support network • Family violence • Access to the means of suicide • Ongoing exposure to traumatic and violent situations While we often think of suicide in relation to depression, anxiety, and substance use problems, any mental illness may increase the risk of suicide. It’s also important to remember that suicide may not be related to any mental illness.

WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS? If someone you know is showing one or more of the following behaviours, he or she may be thinking about suicide. Don’t ignore these warning signs. Get help immediately.

• Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself • Looking for a way to kill oneself • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain • Talking about being a burden to others • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly • Sleeping too little or too much • Withdrawing or feeling isolated • Displaying extreme mood swings • Sudden calmness (which may indicate a person is ready to end their life)

HOW CAN WE REDUCE THE RISK OF SUICIDE? • Seeking treatment, care and support for mental health concerns and building a good relationship with a doctor or other health professionals • Building social support networks, such as family, friends, a peer support or support group, or connections with a cultural or faith community • Learning good coping skills to deal with problems, and trusting in coping abilities When a person receives treatment for a mental illness, it can still take time for thoughts of suicide to become manageable and stop. Good treatment is very important, but it may not immediately eliminate the risk of suicide. It’s important to stay connected with a care team, monitor for thoughts of suicide, and seek extra help if it is needed.

WHAT CAN A PERSON DO IF THEY ARE EXPERIENCING THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE? Thoughts of suicide are distressing. It’s important to talk about your experiences with your doctor, mental health care team, or any other person you trust. They can help you learn skills to cope and connect you to useful groups or resources. Other things that you can do include: • Calling a crisis telephone support line • Connecting with family, friends, or a support group. It can be helpful to talk with others who have experienced thoughts of suicide to learn about their coping strategies If you’re in crisis and aren’t sure what to do, you can always call 9-1-1 or go to your local emergency room.

Safety plans can be useful. Your plan may include: • Activities that calm you or take your mind off your thoughts • Your own reasons for living • Key people to call if you’re worried about your safety • Phone numbers for local crisis or suicide prevention helplines • A list of safe places to go if you don’t feel safe at home HOW CAN I HELP A LOVED ONE? If you’re concerned about someone else, talk with them. Ask them directly if they’re thinking about suicide. Talking about suicide won’t give them the idea. If someone is seriously considering suicide, they may be relieved that they can talk about it. The two most important things you can do are listen and help them connect with mental health services.

I live every day with a chronic illness. Some days are good, some are bad, and some are hellish. There’s nothing I can do about it, this will simply, always be my life.

Some days I cry. I cry for the person that I was, for the life that I had before Lyme took over my life.

I grieve. I grieve for the loss of dance, for those moments in my life when I stood on the wings of a curtain with the lights shining on the stage. I will never again stand on that stage.

I was a cross-country runner. I loved it actually, to put my shoes on and just run. The dirt road did not judge, it did not care how far or fast I ran. It was an escape, and it’s gone now. More than that though, it was something that I had with my dad, it was our thing. He would come to every single one of my races and meets. I knew he would be on the sidelines.

I didn’t just run to escape, I ran to make my dad proud.

I never told him this, but when I would miss him in my first year of university, I would always go running and feel better. It was a connection I had with him. It breaks my heart that I won’t ever run through the trails with him again, that he will never cheer me on at a meet again, I will never run again. Walking on a good day still causes so much pain. So, I grieve that these chapters of my life are closed, never to be reopened.

One of my favourite quotes of all time is by Muhammad Ali, “Impossible is Nothing.” These three words hang on a poster in my room. They have been in every room that I have ever had, a gift from my family years ago.

I always believed. I believed that there was nothing that I could not do if I put my mind to it. I could take the world by storm. So, when my body started to break down, I began to realize that some things were going to be

impossible, no matter how much I wanted to do them and no matter how hard I tried. I have spent a lot of time grieving because I have lost a lot of things.

It's something that I never really realized until I went through it, that we grieve more than just the death of people. When you go through a lot of health troubles, it takes a huge toll on your mental and emotional health.

There is a significant link between mental and physical health, and it is something that we need to pay more attention to.

When your body hurts, it does something to you inside, to your heart. All of a sudden, you realize that you are not invincible, you are just like anyone else, you are a mortal being. I always thought that I was unbeatable, that I could go through anything and still come out the better, still live my dreams no matter what. If I was determined to succeed, I damn well would. All of a sudden, though, it was more than just people telling me that there were things that I could not do any more. My body started to tell me, it began to break down, it wouldn’t work. I hated it, I felt so lost.

The one thing that I had always believed in was me, and now my own body was betraying me. I used to bargain with it. I would be walking across campus, and all of a sudden, the pain in my joints would become unbearable, it would feel like my legs were going to collapse, and I was going to fall. I would plead with my body to just hold out a little longer, just let me get to the bus. Some days they would carry me, others I wasn’t so lucky. I had plans and goals, and all of a sudden, they seemed so far away. Things that had been in my grasp were slipping through my fingers, literally. On top of the constant tremors, I would continually lose muscle control in my hands. Pshhh, but who needs hands anyway?

When someone becomes ill, and health problems take over their lives, it is so important to also deal with the mental and emotional side of things, to take the time and grieve over the changes in their lives. It is a very difficult time, and it is okay to be sad and cry through it, it is okay to grieve the loss of dance or running. The tears do not make us weak, they help us process the turmoil that our lives have become.

Michael is the son of a commercial fisherman, born & raised in Norfolk County. So many of us (child to senior) are affected by unresolved grief. Michael’s autobiography examines the question that many of us ask at the death of a loved one. “Will I ever smile again?”

ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME (ITBS) The Iliotibial band is a thick band of connective tissue that runs from the lateral aspect of the pelvis down the thigh, connecting to the outside of the knee. This band travels over the hip and knee joint making it important for maintaining stability and integral for knee function. The IT band glides back and forth over the distal end of the femur during knee flexion and extension which increases friction between the tissue and bone with overuse, causing inflammation of the iliotibial tendon and tightening of the band. Runners and cyclists are prone to this injury with other predisposing factors including weak knee extensors and flexors, weak hip abductors, leg length discrepancy and excessive foot pronation. Besides musculature and biomechanics, training errors such as running on too many hills and increasing mileage abruptly can contribute to the onset of this condition.

Symptoms of ITBS consist of pain on the lateral portion of the knee that comes on shortly after beginning an activity and persists throughout the training session. After a period of rest the pain may subside, only to return with continued training. The pain is aggravated by flexing and extending the knee as well as walking downhill or squatting. In mild cases, IT band pain and inflammation can subside within a week or two of refraining from exercise, however more severe cases may require therapeutic intervention.

The treatment goal for ITBS is to reduce pain and inflammation then stretch and condition the muscles, so the injury does not recur. Ultrasound therapy and massage can help decrease inflammation as well as the frequent application of ice. Stretching of various muscle groups and low impact activities such as light stationary cycling can later be introduced to increase fitness in the weakened areas and flexibility of the IT band. IMPORTANCE OF A MASSAGE I find it is good to go for a massage every couple of months. I usually ask that the focus be on my back and legs, with all the running I do. The small aches and pains tend to add up over time, and for me, I find that a proper massage helps me manage my body better while training. body. An example of this occurred a few months ago when I mentioned continued tightness in the left leg. Sure enough, Krista located the problem in my glute and went to work on it. After she was done, she recommended a few stretches to do to keep the leg loose.

The American Massage Therapy Association says that massage is essential in improving performance, preventing injury, reduction of pain, and helps to improve focus and reduce recovery times from injuries.

With that in mind, it is easy to understand just how vital a massage can be for us weekend warriors!
