s I looked over our 2014 magazines, I had to wonder where 2015 would take us. I mean there are a ton of stories to get

to (Thank you to everyone who shares their ideas with us - we really do appreciate it!). Our hope is to continue to bring you the stories of incredible people who give and become involved in our community.

It is an honour every time I have the opportunity to write about these folks. We try not to chase the latest and greatest story, but focus on the folks who tend to fly below the radar, who perhaps think they are nothing special, but in reality give inspiration to us all.

As I look back on 2014 there are a few of those folks I want to thank for letting us bring their story to life…

Gary and Janet Hepburn - who brought TwentyThree Market to Port Dover!

Ike Hewitt - getting back together for Remembrance Day was something I will not soon forget!

Peggy and George Sarson and their event, Run for the Toad - they are unbelievably dedicated folks who give their all to help other runners!

Brad Smith - for sharing with us the story behind his drive to help Norfolk General Hospital!

Norfolk Community Foundation - for stepping up and helping Norfolk Association for Community Living (NACL)!

The Eising family - for sharing their lives with us and building a staple business in our community!

These are some of the folks who we chatted with in 2014. They deserve a tip of the hat for all they have done. Each and every one of them has made a difference in our community and inspired us to be better people!

New Year’s Day Swim A

s you can see by our cover shot, Mother Nature was in no mood January 1, 2015.

Every new year brings with it the hopes of a new beginning, a time for a fresh start. Some folks get their new year kicked off with a little dip in the lake. For a lot of folks it seems like a crazy thing to do, but to others it is a quest that needs to be done. A way to

wash away the old and ring in the new!

The weather for the 2015 Polar Bear Dip brought an assortment of conditions… gusting winds that reached 62 km per hour, to an ice packed shoreline and waves reaching three metres high. Oh and did we mention the air had a feel of -12˚C to it?

A tough way to start the year!

As a result of these conditions, the

event was cancelled. I appreciated that the organizers decided to err on the side of caution. This was not a day to mess with the lake. There is always next year!

Food for Thought

A

s much as we like to think things are great in our community, the truth is, there are a lot of children who need our support. One of the main concerns we are seeing

over and over again are children going without food, particularly breakfast! A healthy meal in the morning can make all the difference in a child’s day, providing a boost just in time for a day of learning.

Now without that slice or two of orange, a little cereal and milk, school wouldn’t carry the same meaning.

Without the food, hunger may overtake the desire of learning.

Thankfully for the last fifteen years, groups like the Child Nutrition Network (CNN) have stepped up to the plate and have made a direct impact for children all across the province. According to the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services, in the 2012-13 school year Ontario’s Student Nutrition Program provided nutritious school meals to over 695,000 children and youth across Ontario. Massive numbers when you think about it!

At our local level REACH has provided the program and leadership for the Haldimand Norfolk area, with Sharon Smith leading the charge.

The Child Nutrition Network, established in January 1998, is the local partnership including Haldimand-Norfolk REACH, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit, Haldimand War Memorial Hospital and community members supporting Student Nutrition Programs in our area. The Student Nutrition Program is a provincial initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS)

and is administered regionally through HaldimandNorfolk REACH. CNN is the local provider for the Student Nutrition Program.

The Child Nutrition Network (CNN) currently supports sixty programs. Following the provincial expansion announced in October 2013, an additional six programs have been designated at risk which now brings the total number of local designated programs to twelve. With the addition of these new students participating in the six new designated programs, CNN is now supporting 8,819 children across Haldimand and Norfolk communities.

The Farm to School project continues to grow with over thirty schools purchasing locally sourced cucumbers, berries, apples and sweet potatoes. As

this project has grown, it now includes the Rotary Apple Program which began in 2006. Rotary Clubs across Haldimand and Norfolk have provided annual funding for the Rotary Apple Program and local programs have received additional funding to purchase fresh local apples for use in their student nutrition programs. Most programs utilized the Norfolk Fruit Growers Association (NFGA) to source locally grown, fresh apples.

NFGA also provided delivery to the CNN food hub in Dunnville where apples were then distributed to local Haldimand area programs.

A recent donation from Scotiabank, Simcoe will support the West Lynn breakfast program and others across the Norfolk community. CNN would like to sincerely thank Scotiabank for their ongoing support of local student nutrition programs.

Sharon Smyth, the community development coordinator with the Child Nutrition Program noted that, “Without the support of businesses like Scotiabank these programs would not have the variety of healthy food available for the students.”

Okay, so now that we understand what the Child Nutrition Network does. Let’s check out a typical morning at West Lynn School in Simcoe.

I arrived at 8:30am where a couple of volunteers were busy getting the food out for the children… a typical morning may have as many as thirtyfive children. Today Justin Cloet is helping out, greeting the kids as they come up to get their food.

Justin tells me he has been volunteering for over a year now and enjoys coming to the school on Mondays to assist.

Today the children can get cereal with milk and some orange slices; a very healthy start to a long day of school. As I watch, kids from junior kindergarten right up to grade 8 come by and receive the food, have a seat and enjoy. I wonder if this may be a growing trend in our society. Is the gap between the have and have nots growing? Are we as a society setting up enough help? We can always do more that is for sure. I think both my questions can be answered fairly easily. YES the need is growing and YES more folks are helping out!

IN THE LONG RUN

I have lost a part of my soul And it has taken its toll.

The wind blows a little colder.

I have become somewhat older.

OWEVER, it is the beginning of a new year. Yes, it is New

Year’s, a time of resolutions, new goals and silly hats.

I am a believer in the resilience of man and in the ability to keep being productive and useful as we grow old. Admittedly, we do have to work harder at it, be more organized and sometimes more singleminded than we used to be. But we may have more time; often we do when we're retired, our children are grown-up and our homes are set up the way we like.

In order to get what you want, you have to know what you want. In my case, I believe the base we build on is getting ourselves in the best physical and mental health possible. Personally, I like to set goals, sometimes ones that might seem a bit far-fetched. It is the pursuit of the goal that drives me, not the attainment.

With regard to sports, this year my goal is to compete in a 72 hour running race in May (Yes, possibly unfortunately, you read that correctly). More crazily, perhaps, and certainly more fortunately for me, I have a training partner, Corina, who is embracing the idea as well. We are currently running ever longer distances in preparation for this adventure. Every week we hope ardently for good weather and no training injuries. It is certainly an escape from other everyday obligations.

Ideally, everyone should have something to look forward to for themselves. It helps keep them in the

right frame of mind for everything else that needs to be attended to. In my case, I am also buoyed by the local running community. Their camaraderie and constructive outlook on life, individually and collectively, has carried me through the last number of months of dealing with loss.

Hopefully, we all have a goal of happiness in the new year. My overall goal is to have a life worth living. I know in all my columns I have written mostly about myself. I am not certain whether that is my mandate. It just seems those are the most vivid thoughts I can share.

In my defence, I will quote Thoreau, “I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as

well.”

I believe we should try to make 2015 a worthwhile year. Whatever we have to do, and whatever we want to do, shouldn’t we do it to the best of our ability? How about this from Longfellow:

Each morning sees some task begun Each evening sees it close.

Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night's repose.

Try to derive happiness from a good day’s work, whatever it is. So for my training partner and me, part of each day is getting out there, putting one foot in front of the other and running toward our goal. Sometimes the work is hard but it always feels good to have faced the challenge and to have completed it. ►

work of Pat Grant, the ladies put together over 80 Christmas packages containing a variety of goodies. Pat herself knitted 80 scarves to put in the bags! On December 16th the gifts were delivered and Pat reminded everyone

Starting Your Own Seeds Indoors Y

our 2015 seed catalogues may be arriving shortly to your home and within a few weeks you could have those precious seed packets in your hands.

But don’t get too excited just yet!

If those seeds are started too soon, your plants will become leggy and overgrown long before you can transplant them into your garden.

The general rule of thumb is, (even if your thumb isn’t green) if the seed packet recommends sowing four to six weeks before the last frost date, it is better to pick four – rather than the six week date, counting back from the third week in May. To ensure success, it is always best to use a fresh, sterile seed-starting mixture. Moisten this germination mixture about an hour before sowing your seed into it. Make sure it isn’t too soggy though, it should be as damp as a wrung-out sponge.

Follow the sowing information on the seed packet or from the internet as it pertains to the particular seed in terms of lighting requirements, seed depth, and ambient temperatures for germination and seedling growth.

Mist your seed flats or containers often while keeping them between times under a plastic dome or in a zip-lock bag until the first signs of germination. A bottom heat source is highly recommended using a heating pad or de-icing cable during this period.

As the seedlings mature, wait until the top of the soil surface looks dry before watering with a mister. Avoidance of overwatering at this stage is crucial as it promotes better root growth and reduces the chances of a fungal disease called dampeningoff from developing.

Locate your flat in a bright window, but grow lights or cool fluorescent tubes are better. Try to keep the seedlings about eight to ten centimetres from the light source for about sixteen hours daily to prevent the plants from becoming too spindly.

The windowsill method presents some challenges though, as extreme temperatures may occur causing the tender seedlings January 2015 or Norfolk to either dry-out freeze, Hub if left unattended.

When your rows of plants have developed their second set of leaves, pull the plants apart and replant them into cell packs, which produce individual plants that are easier to transplant later on. This is also the time to start feeding them a weak fertilizer solution of 20-20-20 once a week. The strength and frequency of “fertigation” (watering with a soluble fertilizer) should increase as the plants develop.

Before planting outdoors, subject plants to outdoor conditions gradually over a week or ten day period. Keep them out of the direct sunlight initially, then give them sun for an hour or so, and so on.

Making 2015

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS HAPPEN!

love making New Year’s resolutions. Over the years I’ve

resolved to improve my eating, sleeping, fitness and financial habits. At first, it appeared that all the good tasting and fun activities were bad and all the less tasty and arduous activities were good for me. It was discouraging and I ‘dropped off the wagon’ many times early on. It’s tough to change old bad habits with new improved habits!

Here are four rules that helped me follow through on my New Year’s resolutions to a point where I prefer my healthier habits:

1. Stay focused by saying no There are an infinite number of ways to improve one’s self. It’s tough to stay focused on trading old habits for new when you have too many to choose from. It's only by saying no that you can concentrate on the things that are really important. So pick the two or three most important things, whether it is saving 10% of your salary to reduce debt or build a nest egg and say ‘no’ to all the rest.

2. Full court press

4. Refuse to settle

Every resolution requires 100% support. This means that you research all the minutiae that will help you to achieve 100% success with implementing your most important resolutions. Think of it as a career changing job opportunity wherein you put all you have to ensure 100% success. You are able to put in all the required effort because you only focused on successfully implementing one or two resolutions.

For many of us settling, or ‘that’s good enough’, is a common trap with New Year’s resolutions. We rise to a level of fitness, health, financial security that makes us comfortable and then we coast... and often stop pushing ourselves to finish what we started.

3. Focus on your people Quality work starts with quality advisors. We can find lots of information on the Web but most of us have difficulty sifting the wheat from the chafe. My fitness training was vastly improved with a membership in a local fitness centre with the addition of a personal fitness trainer. My fitness regime that was based on ‘common knowledge’ gathered on the Internet was mediocre compared to the very effective regime put together by a professional that I trust.

DISCOVERING BIRDS of NORFOLK with George & Vic

S

nowy Owls do not nest in Norfolk County and the only time we have a chance to see them is during the winter months when a few might drift this far south to over winter in our area.

A few, one to five or more, are usually spotted around Long Point during the annual Christmas Bird Count. They nest on the Tundra in extreme northern Canada. Snowy Owls hunt by day as well as night and when they show up in our area they can often be found during the day sitting on the ground or a fence post or even on a building.

Females and Juvenile birds are heavily barred with black spots, the heaviest being on the younger birds. Old males are sometimes pure white.

We like to drive the back roads of Norfolk and Haldimand in the winter looking for these majestic birds of prey and are sometimes lucky.

We have found them around Long Point and Turkey Point and along the Lake Erie shoreline east of Port Dover. Keep your eyes open from November to March.

I photographed this bird, on a rocky outcrop north of Sudbury and was pleased when Vic Gibbons decided to paint it in the same habitat.

These viruses enter your body through the mucus membranes of your nose, eyes or mouth. Because the flu aerosol particles can travel as far as 10 feet, they can be easily transmitted in a variety of ways.

You can inhale the virus by standing close to an infected person who has coughed or sneezed. Or you can transfer the virus to your hands by touching an infected surface. Then, when you touch your hands to your nose, eyes or mouth, the virus gets absorbed, and you get infected.

Crowded, enclosed places, of course, are breeding grounds for the flu virus. During the winter months, it typically spreads through large groups of people who spend time in close contact, such as in day cares, classrooms, college dorms, military barracks, seniors residences and nursing homes.

The flu virus can also be very tenacious. Some of the hardier strains can survive for hours, and even days, on non-porous surfaces such as your kitchen counters, doorknobs, faucets and the nooks and crannies of your computer keyboard. Mobile phones, in particular, are notorious germ carriers because they’re so close to our hands and mouth. So you can pick up a virus by simply picking up your phone!

Moreover, you don’t have to be feeling bad to pass the virus on to others. Because 30 to 40 percent of people carrying the flu virus have no symptoms, you can spread the virus without even knowing you’re infected.

Prevention Along with getting vaccinated, eating properly, and steering away from crowds, here are some proven ways to help keep you—and others—flu-free this year:

Get into the habit of hand washing - Remember—every

time your germy hand touches a doorknob, let’s say, another person risks picking up the virus and getting sick. So wash your hands frequently and thoroughly throughout flu season, and encourage family members to do the same. Aim for at least 20 seconds, and be sure to scrub your palms and fingertips, which are the point of contact for most germs. It’s also a good idea to carry hand sanitizers around.

Practice good coughing and sneezing etiquette -

Covering your mouth when you cough and sneeze can prevent virus-carrying droplets from flying into the air and infecting others. Ideally you should sneeze into a tissue or paper towel, but if you don’t have them with you, sneeze into the crook of your elbow.

Disinfect your devices - Some people are nervous about cleaning their mobile phones and laptops because they’re electronic, they could use a good wipe now and then.

Use a disinfectant spray or wipe them with an antibacterial substance.

Managing Side Effects

The flu usually runs its course in six to ten days, although it can last longer. Most otherwise healthy people just get a mild case, and can get better by getting plenty of rest, drinking lots of fluids, (including water, broth and electrolyte beverages) and avoiding contact with other people except to get medical care. As for how long you should stay at home, experts generally recommend that you should try to stay at home for at least 24 hours until your fever is gone. Stay away from family members as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

For those with underlying medical conditions, or who are in nursing homes, getting sick with the flu could be serious or even fatal. For this group, doctors recommend taking antiviral drugs.

These are a class of prescription medicine that decrease the virus’s ability to reproduce and thus shorten the time you are sick by one or two days. They can also help prevent complications.

Because these drugs work better for treatment the sooner they are started, they are usually taken within 48 hours of onset of flu symptoms. They are approved for adults and children one year and older, and for pregnant women. Check with your doctor promptly if you have a high risk condition such as asthma, and get flu symptoms.

Over-the-counter medications such as decongestants and antihistamines can help ease symptoms of the flu but will not make you less contagious. There are many different cough and cold remedies available, some of which can interact with other medications, so be sure to speak to your FHCP pharmacist about what kind is most suitable for your symptoms.

s it not hard to believe? Seniors can wonder at how old this makes them and then a pensive smile

comes to their eyes and lips. Really, who would ever have thought of writing 2015 on a cheque! And so, there is the new calendar. Many go through it month by month noting birthdays and anniversaries of family and friends, the statuary holidays and of course with some how many long weekends! These now have different meanings; the one big difference being the grandkids may come to visit at this time!!

Also noted are the dates for graduations, weddings, retirements and reunions.

Sometimes this was the year for renovations or maybe the big move to a smaller residence that is easier to look after. Where has the time gone??

So now, when the new year has been analyzed, the various calendars can be put in their place. There is one for the wallet or purse, perhaps one for the door of the fridge or cupboard and one for the kitchen wall. This calendar is larger and is used to note the daily activities. It often has a picture on each month that helps brighten the room as the decorations of the festive

season are packed away. This one is helpful when telling others of your activities.

Now another use for the new calendar is writing in all the appointments that have been booked for vision, hearing and other health and personal reasons.

January 1, 2015 brings about many changes, some right away and others through the year. One change is to remember the new year when sending messages by the old way!!

Something that never changes is the phrase that is used when greeting someone for first time in January 2015 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Ingredients

Portion size 8 to 10 (1 pie) 1 tbsp (15 mL) vegetable oil 2 lb (907 g) ground pork 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) beef stock 3 onions, finely chopped 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 3/4 tsp (4 mL) salt 1/2 tsp (2 mL) cinnamon

Directions

1/2 tsp (2 mL) pepper 1/2 tsp (2 mL) dried summer savoury 1/4 tsp (1 mL) cloves ½ cup grated russet potato Pastry for 10-inch doublecrust pie or Pastry for 9-inch double-crust pie 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp (5 mL) water

In large skillet, heat oil on medium high and brown ground pork until no longer pink. Drain off fat. Stir in stock, onions, mushrooms, garlic, spices and grated potato. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 35 to 45 minutes or until approximately 2 tablespoons

of liquid remains. Allow to cool (overnight if possible).

Spoon cooled mixture into prepared pastry crust and cover with pastry. Seal edges, trim and flute. Brush top with egg and water mixture and cut vents. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown. Let cool 10 minutes before serving or cool completely, wrap and freeze.

Waiting for Ice am not wishing for cold weather with snow and ice but it is inevitable for Ontario winters.

We did get a taste of winter back in late November but have since lost almost all of the evidence. The effects of that snowstorm are still being felt in this first week of December while writing this article. As an open-water fishing guide and angler, the increase in water levels and water flows and the decreasing temperatures of rivers from the snow melt has certainly affected my guiding and angling opportunities.

While representing various sponsors during the recent Sail Store grand opening in Cambridge ice fishing was certainly on many anglers’ minds. There were a lot of purchases of ice augers, ice fishing rods and reels and tackle.

The foremost thing that should be on any ice angler’s mind is safety. This is especially true when it comes to ice thickness. The following is a guideline for new, clear ice.

2” or less = STAY OFF! 4” = Ice fishing activity on foot 5” = Snowmobile or ATV 8” – 12” = Car 12” – 15” = Small to medium truck Remember these are guidelines only and to be used on new, clear, solid ice.

White ice requires double the thickness of clear ice. Many factors other than ice thickness can cause ice to be unsafe. Ice thickness can vary from one area on a lake or river versus another area close by. Stay away from flowing water as it weakens the ice over it. It is important for you to check on the ice thickness yourself.

All vehicles should not be parked closer than 50 feet to each other. Be aware of the vehicle not sinking throughout the day. One way to do this is to drill a hole next to the vehicle and check the water level in the hole every hour. If water starts to flow over the top of the hole the vehicle is sinking and you should move the vehicle.

There are a couple of essential safety items you should have with you. Wear an inflatable life jacket. A waterproof flashlight is always a great idea just in case you get stranded in the dark. One very necessary item is a set of ice picks. If you were ever to fall through the ice this handy item will allow you to dig into the ice and hopefully pull yourself out.

One thing about ice fishing is it can be very simple with little equipment and cost, or it can be as complicated and costly as you desire. I learnt to fish with just a twig cut from the nearest bush, monofilament line tied onto the end of the twig, small split shot and hooks, minnows, small piece of tinfoil wrapped and shaped like a flag on the end of the twig. The tinfoil was used as a bite indicator. Then scrape some snow into a small pile, stick the big end of the twig into the snow pile and splash water on the snow pile. Once it freezes you have created a rod holder.

When a bite is detected you set the hook and hand line the fish through the hole.

Re-bait and let the line drop back through the hole and hope for another fish. Can it get any simpler or cheaper?

This makes battling a fish through the ice easier. Take along hooks, split shot, jigs and jigging spoons and you are equipped to battle any fish species. While live bait is the bait of choice there are many alternatives. Flies tied with lots of materials that pulsate to imitate baitfish and insects are often overlooked. There are also lots of artificial baits that are very productive, such as, Berkley Gulp! Alive!

Waxies, Gulp! Maggots, Gulp! Pinched Crawlers and Gulp! Baitfish.

If you are heading out as yourself or small group you will need an ice auger.

The options are manual powered or gas powered. It is all about cost and the number of times you are planning to use the auger. Only you can decide that.

But regardless of the power type, it is imperative to keep the blades sharp.

While an Ice Sonar Unit is a nice piece of equipment to have, it is not necessarily essential. If you wish for one, and don’t want to spend a lot of money, there are black and white units available that do not cost a lot of money. Visit your favourite tackle store and check out the selection.

Don’t get caught up in buying a unit with lots of features you may never use.

Ice fishing can be a lot of fun whether you are inside or outside of a hut. But it is important to be safety conscious and familiarize yourself with your surroundings. What a great winter fishing activity that can put some fresh fish on your table. Be safe and enjoy!

& ABOUT OUT Anxiety of a New Driver recently turned 16 and everyone knows what that means… I am finally old enough to drive. Just like

any 16 year old I was beyond excited to get my G1 driver’s license. I wanted to go and write my test the day I turned 16 and that is exactly what I did. Leading up to my 16th Birthday, my parents were constantly nagging at me to start studying. I made a deal with my dad that if I studied and I was ready to write the G1 test, he would take me after school on my birthday.

Back in November, I was enrolled in Driver’s Ed through Drive Wise in Paris. The in-class portion was a four day program that taught me everything I needed to know about driving - from driving in winter conditions all the way to knowing what to do if you are about to be rear ended. They even brought in a simulator so that we could get a feel for driving.

On the simulator they can control where you are driving and the conditions of the roads to make it more difficult. They can even make it feel like you are drunk and we found that it makes you over-steer in most cases. Since I had taken the classroom portion of Driver’s Ed I knew lots about driving already but I still needed to learn some more to be ready for my test. I borrowed the Ontario Driver’s study guidebook from a family friend and started studying. Unfortunately I didn’t start reading the book until two nights before the day I was going to write my test. That meant I had to cram and spend most of my night time reading the book. After having to study so much in so little time, I personally suggest studying a few weeks before so you can do a few pages per night. I found reading through the book was very helpful because it contained multiple choice sample questions inside. The book also has the answers in the back so you can check that you got each question right.

As well as reading the book, I took online tests as well for extra practice. There are various online practice tests available and I suggest you try a few of them. That way you cover lots of possible questions. I even did an online test at lunch the day I was going to write the test just for one more last chance to study.

On the day of my birthday I was extremely nervous to go write my G1 test, but it was finally after school and I was on my way to the Drive Test office. When we got there it took a while before I wrote it. I had to grab a number and take a seat, just like

everyone one else in there waiting to get his or her G1. I waited for quite a while because they take all the road test people before they get to the G1’s. Finally the lady called my number and that’s when I started to get even more nervous. They gave me a test and I sat down in the room and started to work away at it. On the test there are 40 questions in total. The first page was about the road signs and the second page I found more difficult because it was about the road rules and responsible driving. I read over the test about three times before handing it in to check that those were my final answers. You are allowed to get four wrong on each page so I figured that I had a pretty good chance of passing.

The whole test only took about 20 minutes for me to write. After I finished writing you have to go back to the sitting area and then once again after all the road tests are done, they will start marking your test. I was sitting there for about another 20 to 30 minutes anxiously waiting for them to mark it. Finally they called me up again and gave me my test back. I got two wrong, which means I passed! Hooray! They gave me my temporary driver’s license and in 90 days they are mailing me the real one.

That was it and I was on my way!

When you have your G1, you are allowed to drive as long as you have someone in the front seat with you. The person in the front must have had their full G license for at least four years but you are allowed to have other passengers in the car.

I was so excited to start driving right away that my dad let me drive home after writing my test. At first it was a little scary. It wasn’t until I was sitting in the driver’s seat that I first started to realize I was actually driving on the roads with everyone else.

Thankfully I didn’t have a long way to go to get home because honestly driving for my first time I was pretty nervous. I was constantly checking my mirrors and making sure cars weren’t coming up behind me. We made it home safely. I was really glad that we had arrived home because I was so worried the whole ride.

Since then I have been practicing with my mom and dad. A good way to practice driving is to go to roads that aren’t very busy and you can take your time and learn how to drive at your own pace. To practice parking you can go out to an empty parking lot and work on parking and backing into spots. Sadly, because I have a winter birthday, I have to learn how to drive in the slippery winter conditions. I am told this will actually make me a better driver. Let’s hope so. Luckily for me, the weather hasn’t been too bad yet this winter. Now that I have been practicing driving for a while, I am starting to get more relaxed in the vehicle. I am continuing to drive more and more each week and by the time I can get my G2 I will be ready to drive on my own!

Driving is a really big, scary thing for new drivers. It can be frightening but at the same time it lets you have so much more freedom. It’s a big responsibility and while terrifying at first, driving turns out to be no big deal.
