hat was ‘KWIC’ 30 Years of Innovative

By Dave Scott Cindy and Kent Rapley are a rare commodity in business. They have been a team since they opened Norfolk Computer Systems over on Robinson Street in Simcoe thirty years ago. Cindy and Kent are not the type of folks who toot their own horn… I think if they had it their way, they wouldn’t even have mentioned that they have been in business for thirty years. It was a staff member that encouraged them to have a celebration.

I caught up with the two of them in Kent’s office… for Kent it was business as usual, but you knew he was very proud of the day and the accomplishments he, Cindy and their staff have achieved over the

past thirty years.

In 1983, with both their parents’ blessing, the two set up to open a computer store in Simcoe. Cindy had a degree in data management and Kent in electronics. They were young, eager entrepreneurs, excited with their new beginning.

Thinking back, Cindy remembers how their first customer that came into the store bought a computer…

Kent smiles and says, “First day and we sold a computer… we couldn’t have been happier.”

The business began to grow and by 1986, Kent and Cindy were developing accounting bookkeeping applications software programs for businesses and training folks from all over North America

how to use them. It was a start to a strong commercial business (that flourishes to this day) and it was around this time that KWIC Internet was born.

The early 90’s saw the internet explosion and again Kent and Cindy jumped in as the business grew once more... next up was the late 90’s and wireless internet entered the picture. Twenty-six towers later, KWIC Internet keeps a good portion of the county on line; stretching from Burford, to Brantford, to Nanticoke, to Houghton, and everything in between.

I am amazed at the enthusiasm these two have for their business.

both feel their staff of twenty-one is amazing, dedicated, responsible, fun and always striving to do their best for the customer.

The three of us sat and laughed when we thought back to those early days of floppy disks, and those big old computers… no one had heard of a terabyte back then, nowadays all you need is a thumb drive and a WiFi spot and away you go.

Who knows what the next thirty years will have in store for us, but with KWIC around I am sure Kent and Cindy will make sure they are on the cutting edge.

Concert Being Held To Support Poverty R eduction Initiatives Simcoe A nd Port Dover Food Banks To Benefit

Poverty continues to be a growing concern in Haldimand and Norfolk Counties. The number of people living in poverty, particularly children living in poverty, is alarming.

A concert will be held on Friday October 4, 2013, at the Lighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Dover to raise awareness of poverty in our communities. The Simcoe Caring Cupboard and the Lifeline Food Bank in Port Dover will receive the proceeds from the concert.

The show will feature two bands, Stray Feathers and The Human Orchestra. Band members of Stray Feathers were born in Norfolk County. Their roughly hewn brand of roots rock is delivered with powerful emotion and careless love.

The Human Orchestra is from Hamilton and they blend folk, rock, and jazz together to create their own sound. In 2012 they were nominated for best new group of the year at the Hamilton Music Awards and in 2013 the CBC named them as one of the bands to see.

Les Anderson, who is organizing the concert, says it’s time for the general community to embrace this issue and do what we can to reduce poverty.

“We need to do whatever we can to assist those living in poverty, particularly the growing number of children. In order to be successful, community support is required, particularly from our business leaders, our decision makers, and the residents of Haldimand and Norfolk Counties.”

Anderson says that people would be very surprised at the statistics that show the level of poverty in our communities in the two Counties.

“This is not a problem in one community”, he said, “It is prevalent throughout both Haldimand and Norfolk.

reat Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

By Dave Scott Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from Walsh Public School spent some time last Wednesday morning at the beach in Turkey Point. Oh, they were having fun… in a positive community way. You see they were busy picking up garbage as part of the national Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

I chatted with grade eight student, Zach Peck, who headed up the media relations for school council. Zach explained that Walsh had done this before and that it was important to keep our beaches clean. The students would start at

one end of the beach and work their way down. With clipboard in hand, Zach went off to help keep track of what all was picked up.

Here is a little history about the Great Canadian Shoreline cleanup according to their website, www. shorelinecleanup.ca.

In 1994, a small team of employees and volunteers at the Vancouver Aquarium decided to clean up a local beach in Stanley Park to help protect the city’s shorelines. They submitted the data collected during this event to the International Coastal Cleanup, a global program managed by the

Ocean Conservancy. By 1997, 400 volunteers were participating in 20 sites across British Columbia as part of the Great BC Beach Cleanup.

In 2002, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup emerged as a national program, providing all Canadians the opportunity to make a difference in their local communities. Cleanups started appearing in every province and territory, and by 2003, more than 20,000 volunteers were taking part. Over the following years, the program continued to expand its reach and influence, aided by the support of sponsors, donors, and partners (such as WWF Canada, who became a full partner of the Shoreline Cleanup in 2010).

Public support and interest in the program also grew as Canadians gradually became more aware of the harmful effects of shoreline litter on both fragile aquatic ecosystems and people. In 2012, the Shoreline Cleanup celebrated its 19th anniversary with more than 57,000 volunteers, and expanded the spring cleanup to include school groups in Ontario and British Columbia. Today, it is recognized as one of the largest direct action

conservation programs, as well as the most significant contributor to the International Coastal Cleanup in Canada.

Zach reported that the beach cleanup by the Walsh Public School collected 2678 cigarette butts, 225 bottle caps, 180 packaging materials (such as food wrappers, foam packaging, etc.)… all in all there was over 3,900 pieces of garbage collected!

orfolk General Hospital Obstetrics T eam Brings Birthing Best Practices Close to Home

The Norfolk General Hospital’s Obstetrics Team is celebrating the birth of a new initiative that puts patient safety at the center of the birthing experience. Together with hundreds of other hospitals across North America, Norfolk General Hospital is participating in the MOREOB (Managing Obstetrical Risk Efficiently) program. This is a comprehensive patient safety improvement and professional development program for those working in birthing units.

MOREOB is part of Salus Global safety performance solutions. 90% of births in Canada have occurred in hospitals that have engaged in the MOREOB Program.

Thanks to support from the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN we are able to invest nearly $40,000 a year for three years into the

provision of the program.

The birthing team at Norfolk General Hospital will complete the first of three modules that define MOREOB and the three year professional development program in November. Over the three modules the program incorporates education principles, reflective learning, practice modification and evaluation to ensure that patients experience the best outcomes.

As a result of the MOREOB’s solid educational structure and evidence-based successes it has been accredited by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Canadian Association of Midwives, the American college of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

ontemporary Window Fabrications

I am forever trying to think of new or exciting things to tell people about when it comes to window coverings and sometimes I draw a blank – only momentarily mind you.

I mean I get excited about window stuff all the time, but I am not so sure others feel, as passionately as I do. I have done articles about drapery headings and styles and what is suitable for some, and not for others. I always get people asking me what’s in, what’s out, what’s hot in fabrics etc. For those of you that would like full drapery treatments for let’s say, your living room or dining room (because you would like to add warmth and personality to those rooms) but you shudder at the fabric yardage required. Then, here are a couple of treatments you might find suitable.

One is a ripple fold (or wave) treatment. You have probably seen both in a lot of magazines and you may, or may not, feel any particular

way about either one, yet. However, ripple fold draperies use 25% less fabric, which is deceptive looking at them, because they look – full.

The heading gently folds in and out in a wave fashion so there is a continuous in and out flow of fabric at the top. The heading has a snap tape sewn on and the rod carrier system has a series of glides that the heading just simply snaps onto, easy peasy. This treatment uses a particular traverse rod system with left, right, or centre draw, but the flowing folds of the heading always look perfectly positioned and perfectly spaced.

Great look when using a sheer fabric (light and airy) as the light filters through the fabric providing lots of sunlight & window coverage, yet privacy. Therefore, ideal for street level windows especially for those wanting to see out in daytime or for those trying to achieve a clean, simple, uncomplicated look.

Facts: The Norfolk General Hospital Obstetrical Unit had nearly 300 births last year.

The birthing rooms provide a comfortable setting amidst a department prepared for healthy full-term pregnancies and obstetrical care.

A one-to-one nurse to patient ratio enables continuous support and monitoring for mother and baby.

Partners and/or coaches people are welcome in the labour and delivery rooms.

Norfolk General Hospital has 24 RNs in labour and delivery.

There are also 4 midwives and 5 Family Practice Obstetrical Physicians.

While lining can be used with this treatment, it is best to keep in mind the lighter the weight of the application, the better the flow and hang of the fabric.

The second fabrication is the grommet drapery, which I do get some customers who say right from the get go, that that treatment, looks too contemporary for them. It is a contemporary look, but it is also very versatile and this treatment uses only 1 ½ times fullness - not the usual 2, 2 ½ or even times 3 times fullness desired especially when using sheer or very light fabrics.

I would not suggest this style of drapery in a formal-type dining or living room, but it does have its place in a more casual setting.

Great for kids bedrooms. There are numerous colours of grommets and I do only prefer to use the metal ones - not the plastic ones - and they come in a variety of sizes as well. I also prefer a metal rod system with the grommet heading because it just makes more sense matching the metal with the metal.

People should not be afraid to

venture away from the more traditional headings such as the goblet, pinch or French pleat.

Contemporary just might be the right choice for you and save you money in the meantime.

ometimes homeowners find that their newly planted trees start showing signs of stress and become unthrifty after a short while and soon their investment is lost when the plant dies.

The most common reason? Many trees are simply buried too deeply causing the tree roots to decline in health, as they cannot get the vital oxygen from the air that they require to live. The poor tree health that results, manifests itself as reduced growth rate, atypical leaf size and colour, and increased disease susceptibility.

Therefore it is very important that the root collar flare be visible after planting, so you can be rest assured that it will have the best start possible!

It has been observed that many times after a perfect tree planting, the homeowner then decides to build a raised-bed garden around the tree (thus burying the root collar flare) only to find that within a year or two that the tree is dead or dying.

As a general rule, trees should be transplanted no deeper than the soil in which they were originally grown. The width of the hole should be at least 2 times the diameter of the root ball or container or the spread of the roots in the case of bare root trees. This will provide the tree with enough worked earth for its root structure to establish itself.

This rule is amended if planting in the heavier clay soils as the practice of planting your new trees “proud” is advised. Planting proud essentially means that the root ball is left higher out of the ground thus producing a hilled effect. The soil that is normally used for back-filling is used to help to create a mound. Planting your trees this way in poorly draining clay soils prevents the ground water from collecting in an otherwise deep hole and drowning the roots of your new planting.

And most importantly, the backfilling soil should be a mixture of the original soil with composted manure or topsoil and bone meal.

Finally; young trees should be able to support their own weight, when they are transplanted. If it is unable to do so, try thinning out the upper branches to reduce wind resistance and if that is not enough, you may have to stake the tree.

Also, newly planted trees should be watered at the time of planting. In addition, during the first growing season, they should be watered at least once a week in the absence of a good rain. Remember: Regular deep soakings are better than frequent light wettings.

My exploration of mountain parks in western Canada continued with a visit to Glacier National Park. This park has an interesting history.

It was established in 1886, at the same time as nearby Yoho National Park, just after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) transcontinental line.

After several years of construction, the eastbound and the westbound construction teams were to meet in the mountains of British Columbia.

One of the stumbling blocks to finishing the railway through the mountains had been finding a route through the seemingly impenetrable Selkirk Range of the Columbia Mountains. The CPR sent an experienced railway explorer, Major Albert Bowman Rogers, to find the shortest, practical connection between the two ends of the routes. In 1881, he and his Shuswap guides located the pass that was later named for him when they climbed the west side of Avalanche Mountain. The connection was finally completed and the last spike driven home in November of 1885, linking together the scattered settlements of a young Canada.

The railway company, ever desirous of making a profit, saw the potential for tourism along the route because of the spectacular scenery. With over 400 glaciers covering one-tenth of its total area, Glacier National Park became

renowned for its frozen, rugged wilderness. Lodges and hotels were built to entice travellers to explore an area that had been undiscovered wilderness a few years before.

When the CPR first began its transcontinental service in July 1886, the comfort of the passengers was taken into consideration and schedules were arranged so that the train would stop to allow time for meals at various hotels along the way. One of those hotels was known as the Glacier House and was built in 1887 just three kilometres from the terminus of Illecillewaet Glacier or the “Great Glacier” as it was then known. During the first few months, meals were served in a dining car parked on a siding.

The dining hall and guest rooms were finished by December 1886 and Glacier House soon became a favourite destination for tourists in Canada’s mountains. Within a decade, Glacier House had a reputation equal to some of the finest hotels in the world and included a bowling alley, an observation tower, croquet pitches on the lawns, a wine cellar, a billiard room, gardens and fountains. The raw and spectacular landscape also fuelled the birth of sport mountaineering in North America and became a (luxurious) field station for the study of natural science.

Unfortunately, the name of the mountain near which Rogers Pass is located, gives a hint to what happened to Glacier House. In March 1910, an avalanche buried a railway work crew that was clearing the debris on the line from an earlier slide in Rogers Pass, killing scores of men. This led to a public outcry about the dangers of the CPR’s operations in Rogers Pass and by 1916, the company had completed the Connaught Tunnel beneath the pass, bypassing Glacier House

completely. Despite the loss of rail service, Glacier House stayed open for another decade. Guests were met by tally-ho coaches (and later by buses) near the tunnel entrance for the short trip on the abandoned rail line. However, the popularity of Glacier House declined and it closed in 1925 and was torn down in 1929.

Footings, foundation stones, and remnants of the fountains are still clearly visible today, nearly a century later.

When I arrived at Glacier National Park late in the afternoon, it was somewhat cool, but by the next morning, it was downright cold. I should have expected that it would be cold in a place with the word glacier in its name! Although not as chilly as I eventually experienced later on my trip, it was only 5 C when I crawled out of my sleeping bag. Brrrrrr!

While I was having my breakfast and packing up my gear, I noticed a bright blue bird making the rounds of the neighbouring campsites. It dropped by my site as well to see if I had dropped any little tidbits from my meal. It seemed quite used to humans and I was able to see a Steller’s Jay up close for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful bird, despite its brashness.

This songbird, a native of western North America, is related to the Blue Jay found in the rest of the continent and is also known as the Long-crested Jay, the Mountain Jay, and the Pine Jay. It has a black head and upper body, while the rest of the body is blue with no white under-parts as seen on the Blue Jay. It has a large head, a chunky body, rounded wings, and a long, full tail. Its bill is long, straight, and powerful, with a slight hook and it has a prominent triangular crest that stands almost straight

up from its head. Although the mix of azure and blue does provide a “stellar” sight, this is not how the bird’s name is spelled and Steller’s Jays have the dubious honour of being one of the most frequently misspelled birds’ names. It is actually named after Georg Steller, a naturalist on a Russian explorer’s ship, who discovered the species on an Alaskan island in 1741.

Among the jays of North America, Steller’s Jays and Blue Jays are the only ones to use mud to build their nests. They are, however, not averse to robbing other species’ nests for food and they have been seen attacking and killing smaller adult birds such as nuthatches and juncos. They are excellent mimics and can imitate birds, squirrels, some mechanical objects, cats, chickens, and dogs.

While I sat and watched this bird, I always knew when it was on its way to my campsite by its harsh, scolding call, almost as if it were berating me for not dropping any crumbs. I will admit that, although I am not an advocate of feeding other wildlife, I did eventually dig out my trail mix and find a few sunflower seeds for it to eat. Small wonder it has gotten into the habit of checking out the picnic tables every morning!
