By Dave Scott The rain stayed away just long enough for the Third Annual Port Dover Lions Health and Fitness Expo to get in this year’s 2K Fun Race and The 8K Mud Classic (Run/Walk). The kids ran first with Ben Baruth winning. Next up the walkers made their way out on to the course followed fifteen minutes later by the runners. All the events were well attended and as the photos attest all ages took part.

Meanwhile all the tennis courts were filled with the constant volley of tennis balls. A few metres away the skateboarders were showing their skills at the Skate Camp. It all made for a busy morning and inside the Community Centre over twenty different exhibitors were in

place along with a day’s worth of activities hitting the stage such as yoga, dance and fitness programs.

Unfortunately just after lunch the skies opened up and the rain came down hard, ending some of the outdoor events but the indoor continued along smoothly.

Congrats to all the participants!

I think the Expo is a great idea and hope it will continue to grow. More and more folks are raising their own awareness of the importance of being fit, healthy, getting out and being active. It can be as simple as going for a walk… you will be surprised how good you feel!

It's huge. It's tough as nails. It blows black smoke and makes the ground shake with its rumbling. And it's painted pink.

A tractor is one fierce force on the land. But this tractor's symbolic role in the fight against cancer is just as fierce.

Owner Dale Vranckx, of St. Williams, had an innovative idea when he bought the 1975 Case to prep his land for a 100 acre bean crop. Why not paint it pink and use it as a display at farm shows and parades to generate funds for the Canadian Cancer Society?

"It needed a paint job, and since it's used only three days a year, I thought let's do something with it," Dale said. "I've been involved with different charity events over the years, and since cancer was affecting our family, I thought, what can we do to make a difference?"

And that's exactly what Dale did. He set about finding sponsors, making the tractor available for display, and asking donors to sign the hood, rims, tires and cab.

Asking, "How can we help?" local sponsors stepped up to donate money and materials for maintenance and promotion. Scotiabank has come on board, pledging to match any donations.

Others have donated help with paint, signage and parts.

"The response from sponsors has been phenomenal," Dale said, pointing to corporate names such as W.E. Saunders and Sons Painters, Bach Run Farm Equipment Sales, FS Partners, Stripe Art, Underhill Farm Supply, Nanticoke Industrial Limited, Unverferth, and Grafton Coulee Agri Parts. "We're always looking for new sponsors," Dale said.

Visually, this mighty machine is, in Dale's words, "pretty impressive." It's a model 2670 four-wheel drive packing a 260 horsepower engine. The tires on it are almost six feet tall with custom made rims, and it's powered by environmentally friendly soybean oil.

"I wanted to get farmers' attention, get them thinking about cancer, and getting themselves

"Everybody knows someone who has had it."

Not surprisingly, this unique idea has struck a chord with the general public. The tractor is dotted with signatures and inscriptions like "Love you, Gram", and "In memory of Uncle Rick", proving to be powerful reminders of people whose lives have been touched by cancer.

"You'd be surprised at the reaction it gets," Dale said. "It turns heads."

Road near St. Williams, people hop out of their cars to take pictures. When it's on display at farm shows, as it will be this week during the Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock, Dale says people get teary eyed reading the inscriptions.

"So there's a little bit of a story in it," Dale notes.

CHAMPS RIDE BICKLE!

By Dave Scott How often does the Bickle (Vittoria Fire Truck) get to make four trips around town carrying four different Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) Championship teams in one season? Well, never before last Sunday afternoon, when all four Simcoe Giants teams took their turns riding around Simcoe to celebrate winning their Ontario Baseball Championships. First up was the Pee Wee Major/Minor team, which clinched their ‘B’ title in London. Coach Bob Defreyne said the Pee Wee team did not make it easy, losing their first game 3-2 and being down 8-0 in their next game before stepping up and chipping away at the lead to win the game in an extra inning 9-8. It was a real magic moment for the team. From there the Pee Wee team continued winning making it to the finals and defeating Kawartha 7-3 in the final (the team that beat them the first game).

Next up on the fire truck was the Major Bantams who headed to Woodstock for their OBA tournament. Coach Chris Takacs said the team had an up and down first half of the season and slowly started to gel. The second half of the season the team played good clean baseball. They defeated Wyoming in the final to win their OBA ‘B’ title.

The Mosquito team (10 and 11 years old) headed out for Chatham and brought back the ‘B’ title.

Coach Jeremy Shortt said the team peaked at the right time and used nine different pitchers over the weekend… the secret to their success!

Coach Shortt played all his players in all different situations during the regular season and feels that when the OBA Championship came the kids were prepared for anything.

any other centres had captured four titles in one year… he couldn’t find any that matched Simcoe’s achievement!

Talking with all the coaches and Cory it was easy to see that ball is alive and well in Simcoe with over 330 kids taking part this summer in all the Simcoe leagues… and with the commitment of the coaches, families and volunteers like Cory, I think we may see the Bickle making a few more rounds in the coming years.

Last but not least, were the Simcoe Minor Bantams, team which captured the ‘AA’ title right here at home in Simcoe under the coaching of Jay MacDonald. They too had to take the long way to the finals, losing early in the tournament to Thornhill before bouncing back and out scoring their opponents 40-3 in their last four games. It was redemption for a lot of the players on the team after losing in the finals last year.

F

eel T he F ear and do it anyway

Wilma F. Montgomery People sometimes ask if I am ever afraid when I’m travelling alone and the short answer is, “yes; sometimes, but your fears can’t rule you.’’ The simple facts are that most of us have fears of some sort; it’s how we handle those fears that count.

Last year I did an article here about preparation for travelling by yourself. That answered some of the rational fears, but I’m talking now about the irrational.

It’s all a matter of degree really.

For example, how many people do you know are afraid of snakes or spiders; poor little things just going around doing their snaky, spidery thing and getting stomped on at the drop of a hat. Fear of crowds, fear of noise, the list is endless and ever present. But what do you do about those fears?

Now, I am mildly claustrophobic. I think it comes from being one of 6-7 kids in the back of a station wagon.

All of my siblings seem to share the same phobia; none of us are comfortable sitting in the back seat of a car. My aunt tells the story of the first time our then 7 kid family came to visit; the car door opened and the kids came out of the car, and came out of the car and came out of the car. Eventually there were 8 of us and the family was just too big to fit in one car.

Now, the earliest that I remember my fear of heights manifesting itself

was in a gondola ride up Tunnel Mountain in Banff/Jasper about 45 years ago. I remember finding it very difficult to look down. That feeling has never really left me.

However, there is just too much to see out there. I’ve made myself go up Niagara’s Skylon Tower and look over the Falls. I’ve walked over the Capilano bridge and the Skywalk; it would have been easy to pick me out of the crowd; I’m the grey haired lady with the two handed whiteknuckled iron grip on the railings.

I’ve done the gondola ride down to Hells Gate, BC and then walked across the iron mesh catwalk back across the gorge. I’ve learned a trick; I keep myself busy taking pictures. It’s amazing; you can’t be frozen with fear and take pictures at the same time. Trust me, it helps.

I managed to go up in a small seaplane to whale watch when I was in Tofino BC. It was 1/3 the cost than if I went by myself and there were two hostelling friends with me. I look back on it and I’m really glad that I did it because I got some great pictures and it prepared me for Yellow Mountain.

Yellow Mountain is about a 5-6 hour drive west from the outskirts of Shanghai, China. We walked over a kilometre to get to the hotel. The wait for the gondola ride was about 45 minutes, however it was worth the wait though. If I thought that getting all the materials up into the mountains to build that hotel was

really something, it was nothing compared to getting the steel up into those mountains to build those gondola towers. It was rainy and sometimes visibility was a bit foggy and but what I did see seemed so very ‘far, far, away. So, what do I do but take pictures. I took a lot of pictures.

There was however, one occasion when taking pictures was not the solution and the solution that presented itself was what I like to call ‘intriguing’. I was driving somewhere on the Coastal Highway in the Sonoma region of California, somewhere north of Jenner.

If you check Google Earth you will see that sometimes the only thing between you and the long drop off the cliff is, well, not very much.

It’s a road of absolute beauty but you have to stay focused on the dippsy-doodly hairpin/switchback turns, particularly though, with the hairpin turns at the bottom of a gorge or gully.

It was at the bottom of one of these gullies that I sort of met my Waterloo. The slope I drove down was very steep; the turn at the bottom as tight as any I had encountered and the uphill grade was one of the more extreme. I also admit that I was getting a bit tired.

It had been a very uppsy-daisy, dippsy-doodly day of driving.

As I started up the grade, I had to gear down into first gear. That’s when it happened; I stalled. As I sat there, one hand of the emergency brake and one on the steering

wheel, one foot on the brake and one foot on the clutch, I looked out the driver’s window. All I could see was the other lane, a few inches of gravel shoulder and sheer rock cliff going up.

The view out the passenger window was mostly blue sky, the tops of the trees growing way down the gorge, and I knew the shoulder wasn’t any wider than the other side. I was paralyzed with sheer terror. Then from across the mists of time came the droning voice of Mr. Cronan.

Mr. Cronan had been my grade 11 science teacher 50 years ago; he was also the Driver’s Ed teacher.

This was the days of standard cars so driving standard is pretty much second nature to me now. As his calming reassuring voice spoke to me, I found myself relaxing more or less, and was able to work through the paralysis and get the car moving again. There was a little ‘lay-by’ at the top of the grade and I pulled over to have my minicollapse before proceeding.

As I travel, I meet many a ‘miniWaterloo’. Every day can be an unexpected challenge, which is why I always schedule ‘do-nothing’ days when I travel. But each day of travel is an adventure, each day I call upon experiences and information imparted by friends, colleges and yes, the various teachers that I have had, 50, even 60 years ago. One day I must give my Latin Teacher special credit.

Living in Norfolk on the shores of Lake Erie, I think we sometimes take the lake for granted and forget just how important it is and has been in the lives of so many people. The same can be said for Lake Winnipeg, Canada’s 6th largest lake, and the dominant geographical feature in Manitoba, one that is easily visible from space. On my westward journey, I spent an enjoyable three days over the Labour Day weekend at a cottage on Lake Winnipeg and was surprised at how large the lake is.

This vast body of water in southern Manitoba covers an area of 24,514 square kilometres (9,465 sq miles) in the middle of Canada and is only slightly smaller than Lake Erie. It is also surpassed by Lakes Superior, Huron, Great Bear and Great Slave.

There are also two smaller lakes (Winnipegosis and Manitoba) just west of Lake Winnipeg, each with an area of approximately 5,000 square kilometres, plus hundreds of small lakes in the province. Such a large expanse of water in the middle of some fairly flat country is bound to have quite an effect on the weather patterns in the area.

This is especially true in the winter when the prevailing west winds dump mountains of snow on the east side of the lake.

Lake Winnipeg sustains a complex food web and the largest commercial fishery west of the Great Lakes. It is also the world’s third largest hydroelectric power water reservoir. Currentday Lake Winnipeg is one of the remnants of a giant lake, Lake Agassiz, which covered most of central Canada after the glaciers melted 10,000 years ago. The Lake Winnipeg watershed, the area from which water flows into the lake, covers nearly a million square kilometres of North America from the foothills of the Rockies to just west of Lake Superior. This land area is 40 times larger than the surface area of the lake, a larger ratio than any other large lake

Prairie towns sprung up around grain elevators that are situated next to the railway that moves the harvest from its source to the cities. in the world. Unfortunately, this means that the surface runoff and groundwater that runs into the lake is contaminated with large amounts of inorganic and organic chemicals, sediments, and other detritus. Much of the watershed is dominated by agriculture and, as a result, the amount of phosphorous (used in fertilizer) flowing into Lake Winnipeg today is similar to that entering Lake Erie in the 1960s and 1970s before controls were put on phosphorous use. As a result, water quality in the lake is being adversely affected and, if measures aren’t taken, soon, the lake will have the same problems that Lake Erie faced a few decades ago.

Prairie ponderings

As I slowly made my way across the prairies in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, I took note of some things that struck me along the way.

First of all, the roads run in very straight lines! At one point I saw a large tree on the horizon and decided to measure how far away it was when I got there. Trees stick out in this part of the world because of the flatness and because there are so few of them. It took over ten kilometres of driving to get to the point where the tree was. I guess the upside of this is that you can see a thunderstorm (or a tornado) coming long before it hits! As well, the lack of curves makes speed limits of 100 and 110 on relatively

minor roads quite safe.

Farms are few and far between.

I’m not sure what the average size of a farm is on the prairies, but the distance between farmhouses is measured in kilometres, not feet as in urban subdivisions. In the summer months this is probably not a huge problem, but I think the isolation might get to even me during the winter. And this in a day when communication is facilitated by telephones, television, radio, emails, and texting. What must it have been like for the people living on these farms before cars and modern electronic devices?

The harvest is in full swing here on the prairies. There is a haze on the horizon as you look toward the setting sun that has nothing to do with the weather. This is the dust produced by the hundreds of combines busily bringing in the grain. Fields of wheat, oats, rye, and flax are ripe and ready for the large machines that cut swaths through the fields. The combines are followed by flocks of insecteating birds looking for an easy meal of grasshoppers, which are trying to avoid being gobbled up by the mechanical monster in their midst.

Small prairie towns are interesting and seem to follow a pattern. Almost every one of them has a grain elevator that receives the above-mentioned harvest. The elevators are inevitably located next to the railway, and the street running to the elevator or next

to the railroad is usually named “Railway Street.” I can’t say how many times Jane (my GPS lady) has told me to turn on Railway Street in whichever small town I happen to be in! What the small towns lack, however, is a Tim Hortons or a McDonald’s on every corner. They have small family-run restaurants, bakeries and cafes where the food is unique and not mass produced. Living in the rural areas of the prairies must require a very different way of looking at consumerism; there are few places to go shopping and a trip to the sometimes-miles-distant shopping area must be carefully planned to avoid having to make a repeat visit too often. I expect that this may be a better way of living; perhaps somewhat slower and less stressed.

On the other hand, for those of us not used to it, it can be a bit stressful when the gas tank is nearing empty or you have a flat tire that needs repairing, both of which I have already experienced!

On to the mountains!
