By Dave Scott If you are in Simcoe on Saturday, October 20th take the time to stop by the Barrel Pizza & Pasta between 11 am and 3 pm. Tom Daikos and Nick Zografos (owners) are having a party, celebrating 25 years in business! For $10, which is being donated to the Norfolk General Hospital (NGH), you can enjoy the warm hospitality and great food that the Barrel has become famous for.

By Jean Mottashed Film lovers in Norfolk have another reason to smile.

Kent and Cindy Rapley, owners of the Strand Theatre in Simcoe, have made a special arrangement with the Toronto International Film Festival to screen limited release films on a monthly basis.

These films are unique, high calibre presentations not normally found on the blockbuster Hollywood circuit, and the Strand is one of 180 film locations participating in these screenings. Each film will be shown on specific dates, usually a Monday.

September's film was "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", a deliciously lively tale that combines comedy, pathos, wisdom and drama delivered by a stellar cast of actors in an extraordinary setting.

When seven British retirees who, for their own personal reasons, decide to move to a "retirement" hotel in Jaipur, India, sight unseen, the die is cast for some unexpected adventures and surprises, one of which is the hotel itself.

Not only is "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful" nothing like its depiction in the glossy promotional brochures, it is, in fact, a bit of a dump -- much to the chagrin of its first real guests.

The great part about the Barrel is that the staff and owners are always involved in our community, from sponsoring tons of kids’ sports teams over the past 25 years, to supporting events like the Annaleise Lake Ontario Crossing, to organizing and donating the spaghetti and sauce for the wonderful Annaleise Carr Day at

Over the years the Barrel has donated to NGH and many other organizations. You know they do it because they believe in community and want to help others.

H

ow would a child feel?

By Dave Scott A couple of months ago Mary Taylor, owner of the Simcoe Canadian Tire Store, and I got together to talk about the 500 km bike ride she was about to embark on to raise funds for her Norfolk Chapter of Canadian Tire Jumpstart.

Well now, here is the story behind the incredible journey Mary went on…

Mary began in Kingston, bright and early on Monday, September 17th, with twenty-nine other Canadian Tire Store owners or employees.

The first thing she noticed was the equipment everyone else had, was built for road and speed… her equipment was built for off-road… these folks were serious cyclists. Mary knew that her training she had done, was now going to be put to the test… and sure enough it was. The main group finished forty minutes ahead of her that first day. Having travelled 100 km, Mary was exhausted as she made her way to her room. She knew that with a good night’s rest, she would be back at it in the morning… but before she turned in for the evening, she thought, maybe some TV. As luck would have it, the Terry Fox story was on. Her mind cleared, her drive energized, this was not going to be easy, but watching a true Canadian Hero that evening, provided fuel for the fire that burned inside of Mary.

Tuesday morning came and so did the weather, rain from Picton to Cobourg… 60 km of solid rain. This tested Mary’s resolve, soaked and wet, chilled to the bone, large trucks flying down the highway, the constant spray from the vehicles hitting her, but she persevered. She thought the day would never end. When the day finally came to a close, she hit a hot bath and went straight to bed. It was going to take more than rain to stop Mary from her goal.

Wednesday morning arrived, and Mary was

back out on the road. As she cycled through the small towns, their quiet, quaint beauty on display, her mind drifted to the children of those towns who perhaps were unable to participate in sports. She thought about her journey, how lucky she was to be able to partake in this event.

If she were a kid who had no opportunity to play sports, how would she feel? It was an emotional moment for her. She knew at that moment she would complete her 500 km quest, and raise as much money as she could for Jumpstart, to make sure kids in Norfolk never had to feel left out. Her pace was steady, her resolve was hardened; sure her joints were sore from the ride, but Thursday and Friday were all that was left to do.

When Thursday came, Mary found that her pace relaxed and she enjoyed her ride more. At one point going through a neighbourhood, she saw kids out playing. It did her heart a world of good.

She reminded herself, GET KIDS IN THE GAME… get them out playing.

Friday arrived and with it, so did Annaleise Carr, who was joining Mary on the last 100 km ride into Niagara Falls. Mary was over the moon to have Annaleise join her. Their mutual respect for each other is a bond both share. Mary was impressed with Annaleise’s drive and in return Annaleise was impressed with Mary’s five-day, 500 km bike odyssey.

The two spent the day pedalling and working hard. Mary had a little spill, catching her tire on a curb. As she did the slow motion over the handlebars, she wondered if this was how it would end, just a few kilometres away from the finish line. She lay still for a moment, Annaleise rode up to check on her, Mary looked up from beneath her bike, laughed and said to Annaleise, ‘Don’t try this at home.’ Mary climbed back on the bike more of a bruised ego thing, a few more bumps and bruises to add to the week long

collection, but determination still in place. Then at just after 3 pm, Mary and Annaleise, along with close to 100 other cyclists, reached their final destination.

Mary explained that it was an emotional moment, seeing her husband, children and grandchildren waiting for her. She was tired and sore but the smile kept coming through.

Mary had made the journey and in the process raised well over $7,000 for her Canadian Tire Jumpstart Chapter. Nationally, they raised over $240,000.

It took Mary a few days to recover and when we chatted about the journey, I was impressed with just how much it means to Mary to get kids involved in sports locally and on a national level.

She admits freely that she should have trained more and that she needs to update her own bike gear, but to me, she took the tools she had and made the best of it. Her own internal fortitude pushed her to her limits and to new heights on a personal level. That speaks volumes of the type of person Mary is. The strength in which she places Jumpstart at such a high level of importance is an example to us all.

eaded to the Worlds

By Dave Scott We are lucky in Norfolk to have such top-notch dance studios. They are the great gems of the area, and with such awesome teachers we get high calibre dancers.

To that fact, three of Norfolk’s prominent Tap Dancers are headed off to the World Champions in Germany from December 1st to the 8th.

Alyssa Nelson is fifteen and dances out of the Jo-Ann Adams School Of Dance. She has been dancing for twelve years and enjoys both ballet and tap.

Kristine Walker is also fifteen and dances out of the Lisa Naves Dance Company. She too has been dancing for twelve years and partakes in tap.

Nadine Walker is eighteen. She has also been dancing for twelve years with Lisa Naves and excels at tap.

I had the opportunity to chat with these young ladies and came away very impressed with their drive and dedication to their sport.

The girls were picked from 100 students from Southern Ontario, and then made it through four auditions to make the team and represent Canada at the worlds in Riesa, Germany during the first part of December. The tap ensemble is made up of twenty-four dancers from all over the province, ranging in age from thirteen to thirty.

The ensemble is very committed and puts in six-hour practices. The girls tell me that the practices can be broken down into sections where only thirty to forty seconds of a song are repeated over and over again as they work on perfecting a piece of the routine.

I asked the girls if it was still fun to do, with the long hours of

practicing, with high school and everything else in life.

All three say they still have that joy from day one when they started… they all look forward to dance class. The hard work and time management over the years have paid off.

Kristine, Alyssa and Nadine all agreed that the instructors at their home schools have made them the dancers they are today. Alyssa commented that her instructor, Erin Hilary, has worked to make her a better tap dancer over the years, helping and pushing her to excel.

Nadine offered up that she has taken away a little piece from each of her instructors, learning that it is the little things you do that make a difference.

All three chuckled when I asked about any embarrassing moments on stage… Alyssa remembers refusing to go back on stage at the age of three, after her very first number of her very first recital.

Nadine remembers getting her foot caught in a curtain at one recital.

She says, “You just smile and keep on going, like nothing happened.”

Currently these young ladies are training under renowned tap expert, Everett Smith, at the Tap Dance Centre in Mississauga.

You know it was so refreshing to sit and chat with Nadine, Kristine, and Alyssa. Their dedication and joy of dance came shining through in the conversation. It was easy to see that dance will be a part of their lives for many years to come.

"Jubilee Year" at the Norfolk County Fair

By Jean Mottashed Marlene Smith, of Simcoe, has celebrated a very special anniversary this year. It's her 65th consecutive year of attendance at the Norfolk County Fair.

Now that's a loyal fair-goer!

"I haven't missed a year, even when I lived in Toronto and Brantford.

I always came home to go to the fair, even for a few hours. It didn't matter where I was," she said with a smile.

Marlene's memories go back to the days when she was six years old and her dad, Ralph Bint, used to know which Sunday the train would pull into town loaded with the rides, concession booths and stands that had to be erected in time for opening day. Those were the days, Marlene said, when the family lived on Head Street, and her grandparents lived across the road.

Mr. Bint owned a hardware store and service station at the corner of Grove and Head Streets, and the Sunday the train pulled into town was the only Sunday he kept the store open to accommodate the fair workers. In return, he always received a few free passes to the fair which he would give away to less fortunate kids who may not otherwise have been able to go. "It makes me happy to think about that," Marlene said.

And when it came to his girls, Marlene and her sister Sharon, Mr. Bint gave each of them a roll of quarters or dimes to spend on anything they pleased at the fair.

"When that was done, we were finished, no matter if we spent it all in one day, or over the whole week."

Because the girls attended South School, they were luckier than most. They got a day off school on opening day, but they also got every afternoon off for the rest of fair week because the school's ball diamond was used as a car park.

When Marlene was 12 or 13, she remembers a girlfriend giving her a hot pink, suede, straight skirt and she had just gotten new saddle

shoes. "I thought to myself, I'm all dressed up, I've got to go to the fair. But I had no money, so I went to the fence along John Street and tried to climb the fence." The skirt, of course, got caught between two railings, "and I had to kind of throw myself on the racetrack to get in," she laughed.

Later in life, Marlene and Sharon parked cars in the yard on Sharon's South Drive property. "That was our money to get into the fair," she remembers fondly.

Marlene has always loved the variety of fair food -- including Laur's Taffy, Anne's Carmel Crisp, delicious candy apples and the pogo sticks from the Lion's Club trailer.

"We had to have our pogo!", Marlene said. "Then we'd sit on the race track railing and watch what was

on at the bandstand." Her favourite ride was initially the Tilt-A-Whirl, then the Scrambler. "Some rides were only 15 cents way back when."

And don't suggest to her that the merchandise for sale at the fair is substandard, because Marlene has proof otherwise. During the early seventies, she purchased a set of "Charm" dishes that is so sturdy and unbreakable she still uses them today, forty years later.

The last night of the fair, Marlene said, with a twinkle in her eye, the girls would go in around 9 p.m. and find candy apples, popcorn and taffy on sale for half price. "So we stocked up!"

The following day after the fair was over, Marlene and Sharon would traditionally scour the fairgrounds looking for any loose change on the ground.

"We used to see who could find the most money."

Sadly, Marlene's sister passed away about 18 months ago, and

this year will be her second year at the Norfolk County Fair without Sharon at her side. "I always went with her first, then with my friends."

And what is her favourite memory of the fair? "There are lots of favourite memories," Marlene sighed. "It was just the excitement of it, we just felt so in the middle of it.

Grandma always had hot chocolate on the stove for us when we came home after the fair. No matter how cold I was, I knew Grandma would have the hot chocolate on at home."

After more than six decades, Marlene's passion for the fair has never dimmed. Her enthusiasm is heart-warming and infectious as she talks about the vendors, the exhibits, the judging and the midway in happy anticipation of more good times to come.

Congratulations, Marlene, for getting out to the fair for 65 years in a row! You could say this is your Jubilee Year!

Courtesy of Roger Cruickshank Rev. Don Pletsch of Guelph will be guest minister at Woodhouse United Church for their 212th Anniversary Service on Sunday, October 21. Service will begin at 9:30.

After qualifying as an elementary school teacher, Rev. Don Pletsch went on to earn a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree. Soon after taking up his missionary duties in 1962, he began to prepare himself for ordination. He was ordained by the United Church in 1970, then returned to Africa for his third term with the United Methodist Church there. His work included agricultural extension, primary education and village development.

Rev. Don, along with his wife Helen, and their family of three children, Carolyn, Suzanne and Steven, returned to Canada in 1973 after serving as an agricultural missionary in Sierra Leone, West Africa, for 10 years. He accepted a call to serve the Port Dover/ Woodhouse Pastoral Charge, serving from 1973 to 1980.

Rev. Pletsch left an indelible impression on his friends, whether actual members of his congregation or just friends and acquaintances.

His ease with and enjoyment of people; his love for paying a visit to all who needed, or even just wanted one; his honest concern for those in need; his ability to bring out the best in people; and yes, his brown paper bag lessons which educated as they entertained, these all contributed to his incomparable personality.

Don Pletsch loves people!

He never planned it that way, but Don Pletsch established a benchmark against which all who follow him into the Port Dover and Woodhouse pulpits will surely be measured, until the generations which knew him best have given way to their descendants.

In 1976, Don helped one of the neighbouring churches, St. Andrew’s United Church in Vittoria, raise funds to undertake repairs necessary to permit the church to be re-opened and avoid the wrecker’s ball following a ten-year period without Sunday worship services. By MARG WERDEN NCC protects more of Backus Woods

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) recently announced the conservation of 73 acres (30 hectares) of mature forest habitat in southwestern Ontario. Two projects were completed thanks to generous funding from TD Bank Group through the TD Forests Program, and from the Government of Canada through the Natural Areas Conservation Program and the Habitat Stewardship Program.

One of these projects is here in Norfolk and expands the NCC’s property in Backus Woods by an additional 43 acres (17 hectares).

This mature, deciduous woodland benefits many at-risk species including the Prothonotary and Cerulean Warblers and Acadian Flycatchers. The other project is in Point Albino Woods on the Niagara Peninsula. Both projects are located within the Carolinian Life Zone, an area that comprises less than a quarter of one per cent of Canada’s landmass, but is home to 25 per cent of our country’s species at risk. Both projects build on already existing protected areas and increase the level of protection for native plants and wildlife.

Mushrooms are just part of a larger organism that grows mainly underground. percentage of forest cover in southwestern Ontario and is one of the most biologically diverse regions in Canada, supporting 60 species considered at risk nationally and 221 provincially rare species. As a result, protecting this habitat is critical to the survival of many of these species. Unfortunately, southern Canada is where forests are most threatened by development because this is where the majority of Canadians live, competing for space with more than 80 per cent of our terrestrial and freshwater species at risk.

The addition of this block of land adds to the 5,000 acres (2,025 hectares) already conserved by NCC in Norfolk, as well as the 2,337 acres (945 hectares) owned by the Long Point Conservation Authority.

The recently acquired land, located between the 4th Concession and Highway 24 west of the East Quarter Line, fills in a hole in the previously protected areas located adjacent to the property.

Identifying wild mushrooms

I love mushrooms, but have a fear of eating any found in the wild because of the horror stories that abound about eating poisonous ones. As a result, I buy my mushrooms in the store. However, I’m still fascinated by these organisms and how quickly they seem to spring up, sometimes seemingly like magic overnight. When I was a child, my family would often spend an afternoon in the woods looking for morels, a mushroom that looks like a honeycomb. Unfortunately, back then I didn’t like mushrooms and

have never actually eaten a morel, but I’m constantly on the lookout for them in the spring, so I hope one day to try one. This is one species I feel safe eating.

The mushrooms we see growing on our lawns, in the forest and just about anywhere that the conditions are right are just a small part of a larger organism, a fungus, which grows mostly below the ground. As much as 90 per cent of the fungus grows underground in a network of very thin “threads” called hypha. The network is called the mycelium, which feeds on nutrients by producing enzymes that break down organic matter in soil or dead logs. Under the right conditions, the mycelium produces mushrooms, which we see above ground level.

The role of the mushroom is to produce and disperse spores from which new fungi will develop.

Fungi grow in a wide range or organic material including soil, live and dead trees, and scat. Some fungi feed on dead organic matter while others feed on living organisms.

Other fungi live in a co-dependent or symbiotic relationship with other plants and are called mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi obtain some of their nutrients from the plants that photosynthesize their foods, while the fungi provides nutrients derived from the soil back to the plants. Some plants that depend on mycorrhizal fungi include orchids, heaths, Labrador tea, Leatherleaf, and laurels.
