The guy could talk, that is for sure. He always stopped in and grabbed a coffee and a piece of pie and then would make his way back to the kitchen and chat for a while. He would usually share a story or two about what was being said on the Dover rumour mill that week. Just by his presence, Billy was a main character of Dover during that era. We all took him for granted. No one I know of gave Billy a hard time because you would hear from the rest of us if you did. He was the common factor between all of us. How do you deal with being away from your family for long periods of time? It’s quite difficult some days, but my family have other family members and friends that help them out. I also talk to them every day through social media. Do you miss being in England? There are some things I miss and some things I don’t. I miss the variety of foods in the different countries and the English pubs. I also miss the shorter distances I had to drive between shows. I don’t miss the smaller trucks I was driving in England. Over here, they are much more spacious. What made you decide to move to Canada? Why did you choose Simcoe?
ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH Clinton Hewitt
We came over often, as a family, for vacations, and I really liked it here. We got to make a few friends over the years, in Norfolk County, so my brother and sisters and I made a plan to move over and when a house came up for sale in the area, we connected with a realtor here. We were able to secure

CHATTER - Part Two We all have inner voices; they can be positive or negative depending on the situation and our state of mind. When the voice is positive, it drives the creation of our best selves and the futures we hope for. Even when the inner conversations are negative, known as “chatter”, that is not a bad thing in and of itself. The ability to experience fear, anxiety, anger and other forms of distress is useful in small doses. If we didn’t have critical self-reflective capacity, we’d have a difficult time learning, changing and improving. Our challenge is not to avoid these negative inner voices, rather it is to not let them consume us. Changing the conversations we have with ourselves has the potential to improve our lives. There are tools available to help us resolve getting caught in negative thought spirals. Broadly, these techniques can be organized into three sections: tools that you can implement on your own, tools that rely on your relationships with other people, and tools that involve the environment. I will focus on those you can utilize on your own. In general, they are techniques to aid you in stepping back from the problem, that is, zooming out. Their goal is to give you psychological distance from the situation. 1. Distanced self-talk. When you’re trying to work through a difficult experience, use your name or the word “you” to refer to yourself. When I was working on Part 1 of this article (HUB – Feb. 2022), I finished the typing, a laborious undertaking for one-finger me, and printed myself a copy. I made changes and went back to input them. My article was hiding somewhere in the computer, as I had forgotten to press “Save”. My normal reaction would have been anger and frustration, only alleviated by a liberal round of swearing. However, having just read a pertinent section of the book “Chatter”, my response instead was to say, “Charlie, what are you going to do about it? Well, I’m going to leave it for the night and retype the
whole story in the morning when I get up.” I found it totally amazing; that worked. I was completely calm, just shrugged, shut off the computer and got ready for bed. 2. Imagine advising a friend with the same problem as you. Think about the advice you would give to that person and then apply it to yourself. 3. Broaden your perspective out from your immediate problem. Think about how the experience you’re worrying about compares with other situations you, or others, have dealt with in the past, how it fits into your life as a whole, and what actual effect it has on the world. 4. Re-frame your experience as a challenge. You have the ability to change the way you think about the situation. Initially, you may interpret a problem as a threat or something you will be unable to handle. You may be able to re-interpret it as a challenge you can handle by reminding yourself of how you have dealt with a similar situation successfully in the past. 5. Re-interpret your body’s chatter response. Your body’s symptoms of stress, like an upset stomach or pounding heart before a race, for example, can be stressful themselves. When this happens, you can remind yourself that these are evolutionary reactions to improve performance under high-stress conditions. They help you respond to the challenge. 6. Normalize your experience. Knowing that you are not alone in your experience can be a powerful way of quieting disturbing negative voices. Simply using the word “you” instead of the word “I” makes it easier to think what is happening to you also happens to others. 7. Enjoy mental time travel. Broaden your perspective by trying to think how you will feel about it in a month or a year. 8. Change the view. Visualize the event in your mind from the perspective of a fly on the wall looking down on the scene. This can lead you to focus less on the emotional aspect of the experience and more on making a broader interpretation. 9. Write expressively. Write about your deepest thoughts and most immediate feelings for one or more days. Write as fast as you can and don’t worry about grammar. I have used this strategy a few times. When I have later re-read what I have written, I realize how much clearer and insightful my analysis becomes over time. It reminds me not to trust or rely on my immediate reaction to a bad circumstance.
10. Adapt the perspective of a neutral third party. If you find yourself experiencing chatter over a negative interaction with someone, try to assume the outlook of an observer whose goal is to find the best outcome for both parties. Doing so will reduce your own negative emotions and agitation. Of course, certain other people in our lives can help us manage our inner voices, because we trust them and can talk with them. As well, the environment offers significant opportunities for us. I have written before about the mental health benefits of nature. Remember, it is you who has control over what is happening inside your own circle, either directly, or at least, in how you choose to react to any situation. How is That Heart Rate?
By: Dave Scott Photo by by Isaiah Isaiah Dowling Dowling Photo
Early morning coffee and toast usually start my day before I head downstairs and partake in an hour of fun on my super, wonderful treadmill! Okay, all that is true except for the super, wonderful part! It is my hour to get my day going in the right direction, to get the blood flowing and the heart rate steady as can be. I have focused on maintaining a lower zone heart rate for a while now while slowly increasing my speed and endurance. I have got to tell you it is coming along nicely, well that was until recently! Let me explain. When I start my workout, I like to listen to podcasts; to be honest, the Smartless podcast is the one I mostly turn to. It is a non-political, non-religious podcast. The language can sometimes be a little rough, but their stories are always fascinating. Again it works for me as I run and keeps me thinking positive! Nowadays, I switch it up and go to TSN or Sportsnet to see how the Leafs, Raptors or Jays are doing, again nothing too serious, just background noise to keep the mind busy! About a month ago, on a quiet Sunday morning, I got up, went through my routine and hit the treadmill but forgot to charge my phone. No problem, I put on Sportsnet to see the highlights of the games the night before. Most sports shows are on an hour loop and then start over, so once I watched it, I wanted something different. I put it on the Canadian News station! After about ten minutes, I noticed that my heart rate was
climbing. That's odd, I thought. I am running at the same pace for the hour and fuel along the way. I am not tired at all. Hmmm That is when I realized it was the news, it was stressing me out, and I had only watched 10 minutes of it! I quickly went back to the repeat sports show, and low and behold, my heart rate went back to the proper zone! We live in a time where it seems you are either on one side or the other on any controversial subject. Because of that, there is no room for a constructive conversation to have a resolution. A good friend is the polar opposite of me on just about every political issue, but we are still friends. We never argue, we discuss the merits of each other's views, and in the end, we may agree to disagree. Still, we always agree to be open-minded and listen! In fact, some of the best conversations I have ever had have occurred with this friend. Sidebar, my heart rate never jumps too high in these conversations. I guess what I am trying to say is that we all need to stop feeding the hyperdrive news/social media outlets and start having intelligent conversations with each other, and it probably wouldn't hurt if we all got up early and did some form of workout; before any negative news. You know, so you live a little longer!!!!
