By Dave Scott Life kindaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; has a way of getting back to the place it started. Sometimes our plans seem to stray for a bit before they get back on course.

Local artist, Vic Gibbons, thought way back in 1981 he would like to have a studio at his homeâ&#x20AC;Ś little did he know it would take this long. Last fall, Vic told me he was closing The Olde Town Gallery in Simcoeâ&#x20AC;Ś he had decided to move his studio to his home. It was time for a change and it would give Vic an opportunity to enjoy his home a little more.

Last time I visited Vic he was just finishing up at the store. He looked tired and I could tell the move was taking a toll on him.

Last week I drove out to Vicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home. It is nestled out on the 8th Concession, West of Simcoe.

Pulling in his lane, it is easy to see how Vic gets inspired to paintâ&#x20AC;Ś the setting is perfect and when you walk in the studio you are in the right frame of mind to enjoy browsing through Vicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many works.

Visiting Vic at his new studioâ&#x20AC;Ś he seemed to have that vigour backâ&#x20AC;Ś and yet he seemed very relaxedâ&#x20AC;Ś we sat and chatted about the change and it was not long before a couple of customers

came in and Vic was off helping them with their needs.

It was great to see Vic smiling as he chatted with the customers explaining some of his works.

I asked how business was, Vic said it had been steady; folks that stop by are buying piecesâ&#x20AC;Ś like I said earlier when you pull into the laneâ&#x20AC;Ś you instantly get a better understanding of the man and his workâ&#x20AC;Ś it all comes togetherâ&#x20AC;Ś you know it might have taken a while for Vic to make it homeâ&#x20AC;Ś but this is the right fitâ&#x20AC;Ś the smile on Vicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face says it all.

Carolinian Canada Coalition recognizes environmental contributions The Carolinian Canada Coalition (CCC) held its annual general meeting in Port Rowan last week and recognized two local individuals and one area organization for their contributions to the environment

“Although many people could receive these awards, today’s award winners are very deserving recipients,” said Caroline Biribauer, a CCC director. Among the winners were Dave Reid, Harry Barrett and the Long Point Causeway Improvement Project.

CCC Director Scott Peck presented the award to Dave Reid and said, “Dave is a committed, forwardthinking conservation leader in Norfolk County. He has worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources for 36 years and has been involved

in dozens of projects that have contributed to the Carolinian Canada landscape ranging from the reintroduction of the wild turkey in 1984 to, most recently, the successful Norfolk ALUS Pilot Project. He manages a 50-acre Carolinian Canada woodlot.

Through years of dedication and strong vision, Dave has involved countless farm families across Norfolk in undertaking beneficial stewardship projects from wetland drain restoration projects to habitat creation projects. As you drive around Norfolk County you can see many sites that Dave has been involved in.”

Dave Reid received a conservation award at the Carolinian Canada Coalition annual general meeting last week.

The Long Point Causeway Improvement Project received an honourable mention in the group category. Begun in 2006, the project is a community-based effort to revitalize the 3.5 kilometre-long causeway between the mainland and the Long Point peninsula. Rick Levick, who accepted the award on behalf of the project, said, “In three years we have reduced reptile road kill by more than 50 per cent on the causeway and species-at-risk reptile road mortality is down by more than 60 per cent.”

By Dave Scott I was invited to the Simcoe Special Olympics year-end Banquet at the Army Navy Hall in Simcoe last Sunday evening. The event is held annually to honour our local Special Olympic Athletes, their coaches and the many volunteers who assist with the many sports. The athletes

award winner Harry Barrett by saying it was impossible to sum up Harry’s contributions in just a few paragraphs. “Harry has touched my life by his writing and by his involvement in local organizations. He is past Founding President of both the Norfolk Field Naturalists and the Dover Mills Heritage Association. He was the founding chairman of the Long Point Foundation for Conservation and served as a director of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists.

In 1986 he was appointed to the Ontario Heritage Foundation where he chaired the Niagara Escarpment Committee and served on the Carolinian Canada Committee and the Natural Heritage Committee.”

In accepting his award, Harry Barrett commended the Carolinian Canada Coalition for all they do in this area. “My first contact with CCC was in 1986 when I was appointed to the Ontario Heritage Foundation.

At the time we were given $25 million to enhance the Niagara escarpment and the Bruce Trail and I think we spent it wisely as

participate in activities such as swimming, softball, bowling and floor hockey to name a few.

The dinner was served… which was very delicious. The volunteers were honoured and the athletes chanted Shirley Shaw’s name when it was her turn to go up. Next it was time to congratulate the athletes

We also developed a stewardship program that brought a lot of people in to protect Carolinian property for all time. I’ve met a lot of people committed to preserving Carolinian nature in this area.

It is great to witness the enthusiasm for each other… the camaraderie of this tight knit group is that of a true team.

Near the end of the evening the Stan & Doris Sheil Spirit Award was handed out to one female and male athlete… and the winners

were Trevor Holden and Anne Pritchard.

After all the awards were completed, the DJ cranked up the tunes and the dance floor exploded with athletes kicking up a storm.

I’ve got to say that these folks sure know how to throw a banquet… it was by far the most moving one I had been to in a long time… congrats to all the athletes, volunteers and coaches. Great job!

haron and the Strawberries

By Dave Scott Did you know that at the Judd farm (Meadow Lynn Farms) on Decou Road, they grow twelve different types of Strawberries and did you know that in a few short weeks the Strawberry patch will be ready for you to stop by and start picking?

I stopped by the farm and caught up with Sharon Judd who was busy making trails through the path for folks to walk on.

Sharon explained that the Judd family has been growing Strawberries as far back as the 1940’s and Sharon and her husband have carried on the tradition since 1984.

This year five and a half acres are planted which is a whopping 42,000 plants… and so far the crop is looking fantastic. The plants are in full bud and for every flower a strawberry will grow.

It is estimated that around two million berries could be picked this year.

Sharon Judd of Meadow Lynn Farms The planting took place May 22, 23, 24, and 25 and Sharon, like a mother hen, has been minding her Strawberries ever since A couple of our local restaurants use the Meadow Lynn Farms’ berries, The Blue Elephant and The Belworth House… so when you order that delicious Strawberry treat… you can bet they are from our local fields.

Last year was a tough year for strawberries with a shortened season… but this year looks fabulous.

Make sure you follow Sharon on facebook or twitter so that you can be one of the first to stop by and pick your strawberries (Meadow Lynn farms).

I cannot begin to appreciate the dedication Sharon has towards her Strawberries. She works day and night to ensure the best product possible… years of experience and her expertise all come into play… making sure the strawberries won’t be picked until the absolute best time.

It won’t be long now so… load up the car with the kids, call grandma and grandpa and get those berries picked… make a day of it out in the sun… enjoying the fresh air… and the taste of some local fresh strawberries.

Well it was time to leave the farm, Sharon was busy heading off to gather some freezees for the staff who were busy weeding around the strawberries… and as I drove away all I could think about was stopping back out in a week or so and enjoying some Strawberries.

Since the Law Enforcement Torch Run began its partnership with Special Olympics Ontario, the number of registered athletes has grown from under 4,000 to greater than 17,000 athletes.

Currently we have 131 athletes, 30 coaches and 7 general volunteers registered with Simcoe Special Olympics.

Current sports our athletes participate in are Five and ten Pin Bowling witnessing their trials and tribulations, all of which involve men. SHOUT! is a magazine in which Oliver Holmes writes an advice column. The main characters write into Mr. Holmes, asking advice on relationships and life direction.

The director of this musical was Jim Carroll, who was also assisted by several student volunteers. The music was fantastic, which was to be expected considering Mark Rapley was the bandleader. There were two different casts that

performed. The first cast was: Brooke Mesley, Caroline Schmidt, Neale Bradshaw, Marissa Barber, and Kyla Monture. The second cast consisted of: Brooke Mesley, Hayley Baskerville, Cortney Cunningham, Emma Carroll, and Katie Borgehse. The narrator for both casts was Jacob Frieser. The acting was very comical, and these young ladies fit in perfectly with their character’s persona. I expect to see this young talent involved in other plays around the community in years to come.
