ENS FOR FRIENDS
By Emily Gerrett “Give the little kids a clean drink of water – This is not only a lyric from one of the Hens for Friends group’s songs; it also their mission. Hens for Friends has been donating to its two charities –the Food Bank and WaterCan, since the group was formed in 2008. But this summer they have a big dream in mind, which would make a huge difference in the lives of people half way across the world. They want to raise enough money to have a well built in Africa, a well that would cost almost $6,000.

This is a big task, but the hens have the heart and motivation to try for it. What started out as monthly potluck dinners at their “hen parties, soon turned into a folk music band, where the hens who had musical talents came together to use music to motivate people to donate. “It started when we had our August potluck at the Backus Bluegrass Jam in 2007, and we all had so much fun, said Hens for Friends block player Julie Swainston. “Then afterwards we got to thinking, you know what, we can sing. The next year the group came back to the Backus Bluegrass Jam and performed. The group consists of 9 hens, some who sing and some who play instruments. The group also has a mandolin and banjo picker.

“We have developed one rooster,â€? said Hens for Friends singer and songwriter Janet Robinson. “Finding a female mandolin or banjo picker is hard –and now I don’t think we’d trade Kevin Robinson even if we did ďŹ nd one!â€? Hens for Friends now puts on performances for a minimum donation of $100. They have performed for such groups as the Port Dover Horticultural Society and Fit Seekers Group in Delhi, and have played at Cornstock and Waterford Pumpkin Fest. All of the money they receive goes to fund the two charities they support. “Half the money goes to WaterCan, and then the other half is divided between the Simcoe Food Bank, and the local food bank of wherever we’re performing,â€? Swainston said. WaterCan is a charity dedicated to providing
