Burning Kiln Winery just became one of the newest destination points in Ontario. With its location out on Front Road across from Long Point Eco-Adventures… it will only be a matter of time before folks begin flocking to the location to take in the ambience of this beautiful facility.

My wife and I were invited out for the grand opening on Saturday and were impressed with

the staff, the building and the wine!

The ownership group lead by Mike McArthur and Dave Pond thanked all of the folks who had helped make this eight year dream a reality.

It was not long before all of the owners, Frank DeLeebeeck, Scott Fixter, Dave Pond, Mike McArthur, Steve Malo, Gord Malo and Todd Saunders gathered and made the opening official

with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Society of H aldimand Norfolk’s AGM – Living a Healthy Brain Life lzheimer

Courtesy of The Alzheimer Society of Haldimand Norfolk The Alzheimer Society of Haldimand Norfolk (ASHN), located at the newly renovated Caregiver Wellness Centre 645 Norfolk St N. Simcoe, will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday June 20 at 5:30pm. This year’s AGM theme is “Living a Brain Healthy Life”.

Following the meeting guests are invited to stay for a strawberry social. The Cider Keg, located in Vittoria, ON, has generously offered to donate strawberries, as well as, their famous sparkling cider, which was served to Prince Charles and Camilla during their visit to Canada.

A recent study discovered that strawberries contain high amounts of a nutrient that may help to protect the brain from Alzheimer’s and even improve memory. But brain health isn’t just about nutrition it is also about emotional health.

At this year’s AGM, long time ASHN donator/ supporter John Race of Simcoe will speak about the importance of person centred care. Race will be recognized with an outstanding service award.

Today dementia is the leading cause of disability among seniors. New studies of the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (the most common form of dementia) are in progress, but at present it appears that some 5-8% of Canadians over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s disease, rising to an alarming 30-50% of those over 85. In Haldimand-Norfolk over 1,700 individuals live with some form of dementia. Dementia is a progressive disease that first attacks memory and then harms other brain functions. The

disease eventually robs people of their independence.

The Alzheimer Society of Haldimand Norfolk offers support and assistance to individuals and families as they deal with the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer Disease and associated disorders. The importance of the ASHN programs and services cannot be stressed enough. Families need strategies, tools, resources and education to help them plan ahead.

“Families need the ASHN for support and education as they journey through the dementia process,” says Susan Cuming, Public Education Coordinator for ASHN, who will present strategies and tips for brain health at the AGM on Monday June 20. “Dementia is a tough disease.

Families should get education, support and counselling in a timely manner so that the person with the disease and the caregiver, are better prepared to deal with their circumstances.”

St. John’s A nglican Church, Woodhouse – Celebrating 190 years of weddings.

By Dave Scott A lot of us in this day and age do not attend church on a regular basis. Oh, we go maybe for special occasions‌ weddings and funerals or perhaps at Christmas or Easter, but for many, it has become less a part of life.

Most of us can think back as children when Sunday school was part of our weekend. You got dressed up‌ sang in the choir‌ hung out with some friends‌ as you grew, you found ways to slowly excuse yourself from attending.

For a lot of churches‌ their congregations are growing smaller and smaller and financially they may be having a tough time. Churches still hold a lot of a community’s fabric and many moons ago they acted like today’s community centres and meeting halls‌ they were the gathering place.

It seems we have kinda’ forgotten about that‌ in our area the kids grow up, go off to school and end up not returning till much later in life‌ perhaps this plays a part in a church’s slow decline.

We should understand these churches better‌ if not because of the religious meaning but

perhaps of the historical importanceâ&#x20AC;Ś because of the people who attended the marriages and the funeralsâ&#x20AC;Ś lives were lived in these buildings, families grew-up there and when it is all said and done, lets embrace the people who made our churches strong.

Saint Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church sits proudly at the corner of St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Road and Highway 24. It has been there since 1821â&#x20AC;Ś it has burned three times and been rebuilt three times. The first two were wooden structures and the third was brick.

Over the years, the church has been home to many local familiesâ&#x20AC;Ś consisting of mainly farmers who lived in the area. The Walkers were one of those families.

Sheila Hastie (her motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maiden name was Walker) remembers attending the church as a young child. She thinks back to her grandparents who attended as well... the Union Jack that hangs in the church is the one that her grandparents (Quanbury) donated to the church in memory of their two sons who were lost in WWI.â&#x20AC;Ś If you walked into that church today... you might think, boy, they sure could use a new flag. But the history behind the flag represents a local

familyâ&#x20AC;Ś their heritageâ&#x20AC;Ś their faithâ&#x20AC;Ś their story.

This is the sense of community that a church has the power to hold within its walls. Whether or not we attend church much, we need to open our eyes to the history that surrounds us in these grand buildings and take the time to celebrate their importance.

An event that will display some of the history of St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will take place Sunday June 26th at 11amâ&#x20AC;Ś a Wedding Bells Service celebrating 190 years of unionsâ&#x20AC;Ś all the folks who have been married at the church are invited to bring their wedding photos, enjoy the service with special guest Bishop Terry Dance, Bishop of Norfolk, stay for the lunch afterwardsâ&#x20AC;Ś and share the memories of your special day at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anglican Church.

Alligator Tug heads to Renfrew County!

On Monday June 6, 2011 the Alligator Tug left Norfolk County bound for the County of Renfrew for its 150th Anniversary celebrations being held this weekend. The Alligator Tug will be participating in a static display at the Pembroke airport from June 9 to June 12, 2011 as part of Expo 150, celebrating Renfrew County’s industrial heritage.

After the Expo the Alligator Tug has been invited to participate in the Bristol to Braeside flotilla June 25, 2011 as part of the annual Mc Nab Days in Mc Nab-Braeside townships. Stalker, the last operating steam Alligator boat in the world, in time for the River Drive June 25. With its steam-powered winch and shallow draft, the Alligator extended the lumbering livelihood of many McNab-Braeside families from the 1880s through to the 1940’s. A last reminder of the bygone era when lumber mills lined the shores of the Ottawa River, the W.D. Stalker will participate with other heritage and modern river craft in a Bristol-to-Braeside flotilla.” Between 1889 and 1932, the Simcoe based Company West & Peachey manufactured 230 alligator tugs that were sent to Northern Ontario, Quebec and parts of the United States to help in the logging industry.

The Alligator Tug will be joining other boats in a flotilla along the Ottawa River. The Flotilla will be leaving June 25th from Norway Bay, on the Quebec side of the river at 9:30 a.m. and making their way across to Red Pine Bay on the Ontario side by about 11 a.m.

udd’s and the A lligator Tug

By Dave Scott There is a long history with the Judd family and the W. D. Stalker Alligator Tug... you see, Fred Judd, who is one of the many volunteers that has been getting the tug ready for it’s return to the Ottawa river, is carrying on somewhat of a family tradition in caring for the tug and getting her sea worthy or in this case river worthy. The story goes that Fred’s dad, Ron, was one of the original group of nine that went north to Clear Water West Lake in 1989 and brought her back to Simcoe where the restoration

began.

Fred was happy to see the Stalker getting ready to hit the water again, and said it could not have been done without all the volunteer help and the countless hours they have put in… or without the help from Norfolk County. Upon arrival the wheelhouse will be fitted and the stack put in place. To all the volunteers - great job! And when the tug makes its way across the Ottawa River one more time… an era of Canadian history will come back to life.

A leucistic American Robin has been spotted in Port Dover over the past several years.

Leucistic Robin in Port Dover; albino Rock Pigeon in Port Ryerse For the past several years, I’ve heard of a white American Robin being spotted in Port Dover in the area of the Nelson Street water pumping station, so was on the lookout for it whenever I was in the area. A few weeks ago I was finally successful in spotting it.

Although I had heard that it was an albino, it is actually affected by leucism, an unusual condition that prevents the normal deposition of melanin (dark pigment) in some of the body feathers. Although the Robin still has the rusty-red chest and stomach, all the feathers that normally should be black are white in this bird. It makes for a very noticeable bird as it hops around looking for worms in the grass.

Leucism is a rare genetic disorder found in many different species around the world. Less than 1,000 cases of leucism were reported by volunteers in North America’s Project Feeder Watch between 2000 and 2006, a tiny fraction of the 5.5 million birds reported annually.

Leucism has also been seen in mammals, fish, amphibians, and reptiles.

Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly, resulting in white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures. The degree of leucism, including the brightness of the white and the extent of pigment

loss, will vary depending on the animal’s genetic makeup. Animals that show only white patches or sections of leucistic fur or feathers – often in symmetrical patterns – are often called pied or piebald, while completely white animals are referred to as leucistic.

In birds, leucism only affects the bird’s feathers, usually the darker ones. As in the case of the Robin in Port Dover, a leucistic bird may show some colours brightly, while feathers that should be brown or black are instead pale or white.

Some leucistic birds, however, can lose all the pigment in their feathers and may appear pure white.

A few days after seeing the leucistic Robin in Port Dover, I spotted an albino Rock Pigeon in Port Ryerse.

Leucism is often mistaken for albinism. Albinism is another genetic condition that can turn an animal’s feathers, skin or fur pale, but there are distinct differences between albino and leucistic animals. Albinism affects all the pigments, and albinos show no color whatsoever. It affects all parts of the body including the eyes, legs, feet, and bills, all of which may be red or pink because the underlying blood vessels show through.

Although finding a leucistic or albino animal may be exciting, life isn’t easy for the individual affected by these conditions.

Animals with leucism or albinism face challenges including the loss of protective camouflage, making them more vulnerable to predators.

Plumage and fur colour also play an important role in courtship rituals, so animals with leucism may be unable to find strong, healthy mates. In birds, melanin is also an important structural component of

White feathers, fur and skin also reflect heat more efficiently, which can be fatal for species that rely on sunbathing and solar radiation for heat in northern climates.
