REMEMBERTHEDAY

Itwasoneofthosedark,rainyfalldays.Icould feelthechillinthehouseeversoslightly.Ifelt flat,anditwashardtogetmotivated.Iwas tired,andmybrainwassomewhatscattered.

Withahotcupofwater,Ilookedoutthepicture windowintothebackyard.Leaveswere gatheredonthegrass,andthepinetreeswith theirdarkgreen,stoodoutfromtherest.

Thistimeofyear,Ialwaysthinkabout RemembranceDayandpaststoriesthatwar vetshavesharedwithme,andIinturn,have sharedwithyou.

Theircompellingstoriestaughtusaboutthe valueoflifeandtheimportanceofensuring peaceisattheforefrontofeveryone'smind worldwide.

Inthesetimes,Iwonderifweneedtostepback andfeeltherawemotionofthesesoldiers' storiestostepforwardandputpeacebackat thetopofourprioritylist.

Thisisnovideogamewearein.Thisisreal,and theimagesofconflictsaroundtheworldthathit usdailyaremakingusnumbtothe

ThelasttimeIchecked,wewereallhumans,so itisourproblem.

AsoldierIinterviewedmanyyearsagotoldme ofescapingaprisonerofwarcampwitha buddy,travellingbynightwithnocluewhere theywere,andeventuallymakingittoabridge. Whentellingmethispartofthestory,theold fella,inhismid-90s,begantocry,pausingashe tookoffhisglasses,allowingthetearstofall gentlydownhischeeks.

Thisaspectoflifecanbehardtounderstand. Manywouldlookatthesituationandsay thereisnowronganswerandevensuggest bothpeanutbutterandjamontoast.

Thisseemslikeaneasyproblem,buteventhe simplestofdecisionscancausefolks strugglingwithanxietytohaveexhausting mentalanguish.

Thatperson'smindmaysuddenlyspin, thinkingtheymayreacttothepeanutbutter (althoughtheyhaveneverbeforeshownsigns orsymptomsofanallergicreaction).Doesthe jamsmellweird?Isthebreadtoooldtoeat? Theycannothelpthemselves.

Turningeighty.WhatdoIfeel?Ihavenot discussedit,andIhavenoideahowanyofmy friendswhoareatthispointintheirlivesthink aboutit.Lastyear,Ididn'twonderwhatseventyninewouldbelike,buteightyseemstobea significantnumber.

Irememberturningfortyasthemostmemorable numberforme,withthepossibleexceptionof twenty-one.Idon'trememberfortyasaspecial numberforbecomingmiddle-agedoranything likethat.Irememberitforthepartythatmy energeticandenterprisingwifeJutaput together,completelyunbeknownsttome. Somehow,whilebeingbusyatworkand simultaneouslytakinggraduatecourses,she contactedfriendsfromuniversity,ourcottage group,sportsteammembers,myfellowteachers andthelocalneighbourhood.Thehousein Georgetownoverflowedwithpeopleallevening long.Story-tellingandlaughterfilledtheplace. Amongthelasttoleavewasouruniversityfriend Wayne.Icanstillseehimfallingdownthefront stepsasIwalkedoutwithhim.

Ididnotexpectthatturningeightywouldbelike that,andcertainly,itdidn'tneedtobe.There wouldbenobig,crazycelebration.Myfriends

JohnandMarilynhadinvitedmetotheirhouse foraquietlunch.Ilookedforwardtoitand arrivedattherequestedtime.Wesatatthe table,thefourofus,includingtheirson,my friendRyan,andhaddelicioussandwichesand homemadeapplepie.Ievenblewout ceremonialcandles.Conversationandlaughter flowedeasily.Ithought,howpeacefuland perfect.Afterlunch,weretiredtothesitting roomformorechatter,withmebeingsubtly directedtothebigchairfacingouttowardthe frontdoor.Shortlythereafter,Isawashadow throughtheglass.ItoldJohnthattherewas someoneatthedoor.

Twothingsseemedalittleoutofplace.John didn'tgetupimmediately,andamanwalkedin withoutknocking.ItwasGib,mylong-time friendandbrother-in-law.Igotupandwent overtothedoor,tryingtothinkwhythiswas happeningandwonderinghowheknewwhere Iwas.WhileIwasstrugglingtomakesenseof whathadjusthappened,otherfriendsbegan tricklingin.Itwasoverwhelming.Fortyyears later,thesamethingwasoccurring!Iwas beyondshockedandsurprised.Bythetimea fewhourshadpassed,manyofmyfriendsand neighbourshadcome.Everyoneofthemhad

givenuppartoftheirweekendtohelpmakemy milestonebirthdayunforgettable.Idon'trecall movingveryfarfromthedoorwayforhoursand IknowIneversatdownuntiltherewereonlya fewpeopleleft.Thecrowdhadjustkeptcoming and,later,going.Allthewhile,everyonebehind mewasbeingtreatedroyallybythehosts.Ryan wasanawesomebutler;therewasamplefood anddrinkforeveryone,althoughIcouldn'ttell youwhatitwasbecauseIwastotallyfocusedon alltheguests.

Whatadayitwas.Johnlatertoldmeitwasall pulledtogetherbyhisfabulouswife,Marilyn. Shehadbeenplottingformonths.Itallseemed sounbelievablebecauseshedidn'tknowanyof theinvitedguestsexceptfortheneighbours. Thethreeofushadgottenintothehabitof takingritualeveningwalkswithmydog(and,in away,theirdog,Maisie)andjustcontinuedon afterMaisiesosadlypassedearlierthisyear.I hadmentionedsomeofthenamesduringour nighttimechats,butInevergaveanylastnames. SoMarilynhadtodoalotofdigginginorderto makeheroriginalcontacts.Inowknowshe workedonthissurpriseformonths.Infact,she boughtabig80lawnsignlastyear.Iamstill overwhelmedandhumbled.Fortyandeightyare twonumbersIwillforeverassociatewithwhat specialpeopledidforme.ThankyouJuta, MarilynandJohn.

Sowhatdoesitmeantoturneighty?Foremost, Iamremindedthatthereisnothinginlifeas meaningfulashavingfriends.Ihaveimmense

andimmeasurablegratitudethatIhavebeen fortunateenoughtohavehadfriends throughoutmylife.

Althoughnotassignificantastheimportanceof newfriendsandoldfriends,Ihaveother reflectionsaswell.Ifeelveryfortunatetohave survivedthislongwithmygeneralhealthand memoryintact.Neitherarewhattheyoncewere, buttheyarestillplentygoodenough.Manymy agehaven'tbeensolucky.

Lifeisnowherenearasbusyasitoncewas, whichisgoodbecauseInowneedmoretimeto doeverything.Theslowerpacehasallowedme tobetterappreciateallthatIhavebeengiven. Beingabletoappreciateeverythingleadsto positivityandpositivityattractspositivity.I believeindoingmybesttonevergetstuckin negativity.

Aswegrowolder,maybewedoactuallybecome wiser.Attheageofeighty,therearecertainly thingsIseemoreclearlynowthanIusedto. Maketimefortheotherpeopleinyourlifeand beinterestedinthem.Havethecouragetobe authentic.Dothingsyouliketodo.Talkto friendsofallages.Letlittlethingsmakeyour day,andtheywill.Moveyourbody.Helpothers andallowthemtohelpyou.Dowhatyouknow youneedtodo,andalwaysremindyourselfthat therecanbeagapbetweenwhatweknowand whatwedoifwearenotdisciplinedanddiligent. And,lastly,don'tbelieveyou'redone!

Dull,drearyanddepressed–formanypeople aroundtheworld,thereisanapathy, melancholyordreadthatsetsinduringthe darkermonths.Ourmentalhealthcansuffer enormously,affectingindividualsandtheir lovedonestovaryingdegrees.
