Icanusuallysensewhensomeoneishavingaroughtime,andIalwaystrytoprovidea littlelightintheirday.Asaresult,Ihavehadsomeratherinterestingconversations. Iwouldliketoshareacoupleofthosestoriestoday.
AladysatdownacrossfrommeontheGOtrain.Hereyeshadthatworriedglazeasshe constantlycheckedherphone.Youcouldtellshehadjustbeenthroughafulldayoflife, andhermindwasstillinracemode.
"Toughday?"Iasked.Shetriedtosmileandnoddedyes.Sheexplainedherbaby daughterwassickandherhusbandwastakingtheirdaughtertothehospital.
Asparents,weallknowthatfeelingofnotbeingwithourchildrenwhentheyareill, especiallymoms!
Iaskedhowmanykidsshehad,andshesaidtwo,andfromthere,shetoldmeabouther family.Slowly,asmallsmileappearedaswechatted.
ThisladyexplainedhowshewasbornandraisedinJapanandalwaysdreamedof comingtoCanadaandhowshedidjustthatwhenshefinishedschool.Shemovedto BConherown,taughtherselfEnglish,andthenfoundwork!Sheadoredthebeautyof BC.WhileinBanff,shemetherhusband(fromOntario)andfellinlove.Theyeventually movedtoOntariotobeclosertohisfamily.
ThisdayhadtakenhertoTorontotogetheryoungster'spassportsothefamilycould visitherparentsinJapan.Withthepandemicrestrictionsthesepastfewyears,travel wasnexttoimpossible.
WhileinToronto,herhusbandhadcalled,sayingtheiryoungestwasrunningahigh feverandwasgoingtothehospital.
Thetrainrolledon,andIlistenedtoheramazingstoryofhowherlifehadunfoldedup tothatpoint.Hopingtoeaseherworriedmind,IaskedaboutheryounglifeinJapan. Suddenly,atextfromherhusbandsaidtheyweregettingmedicationatthehospital. Herstresseasedjustabit,aslightreliefonthisday'sjourney.Asaparent,Iunderstood herdeepworrythatday.
Mystopwasupnext,andasthetrainslowed,Ithankedherforsharingherstorywith meandreassuredhereverythingwouldbeokay. Shesmiledandsaidthanks.
TheVIAtrainwaspacked.Thewell-dressedwomanbesidemelookedtobeinher70s. Sheappearedslightlyfrazzledasshepulledoutherbookandturnedhershoulderaway. Youknewsomethingheavywasweighingonhermindandthatshewantedquiet.I wentbacktowork.Perhapswewouldchatlateron.
Aboutthirtyminuteslater,thecoffeecartwascomingdowntheaisle,andthelady turnedtomeandaskedifIwouldstopitbeforeitwentby.
Aswebothsatenjoyingourcoffee,IaskedifshewasvisitingfamilyinToronto.She smiledandsaidshewouldseehergrandchildren,sonanddaughter-in-law.That broughtasmiletoherfaceandseemedtoliftherspirits.
Theconversationstartedslowly.Theladyexplainedthathervisitwasaquickgetaway fromOttawa.Shetalkedaboutherhusband,along-timebusinessownerwhohasdone verywell.Hesoundedlikeahard-workingguywhounderstoodhisclients'valuesand strivedtodeveloplong-termrelationships.Mykindofguy,someoneIcouldrelateto! Ayearago,hewasdiagnosedwithbonecancer.Hecouldnolongersitorstandforany amountoftime.Afterayearoftreatment,hehadslowedthecancer'sprogress considerably,buttheyknewitwouldnotgoaway.Overthelastyear,theirdaughter steppedupandisnowrunningthebusiness.
Thiswasherfirsttimeawayfromhim;shewasn'tsuresheshouldhavegoneandhoped thebreakwouldbegoodforbothofthem,plusthedaughterswouldbethereforher husband.
Sheexplainedherhopesandfears,understandingthisdiseasewasheretostay.Itwas essentialtomakeeverymomentcount.Theylookedforwardtoallthegrandkidsjoining thematthecottageandherhusbandtakingitallinforasmanyyearsaspossible. Ourtrainrolledon;comingintoUnion,Itoldherthestoryofmyheartproblemandhow agoodfriendhadpointedoutthateverythinghadchanged,thatmylifewouldnever bethesameagainandthatIshouldembracetheNewMe.
Itoldheritsoundedlikeherhusbandwasthekindofguywhowouldfindawaytobe thebesthecouldbe.
Asweparted,Iwishedherandherfamilyallthebestandsaid,"Enjoythecottage!" Lifecanbelikeatrainride,bumpyandalittleuncomfortable,yetsometimessmooth andbeautifulasthelakesandforestsgoby.Itistheonlyoneweget!Enjoytheride. Folks,weareallinittogether.Communicatingwithoneanotherwillmakeitmore manageableandallowustomakeafewnewfriendsalongtheway!

Ihavebeenparticipatinginorganized runningformostofmylife,beginning withtrackracesasshortas800metres andincreasingthedistancestoaslong asthe10Dayrace,lookingfornew challengesasIsloweddownoverthe years.Allofthevariouseventsshared thesamebasiccharacteristics.There wasasetdate,aprescribedstarting time,accessibleraceinformationand entryrequirements,andadefinedand markedcourse.Sufficientsupportwas providedtomakeasuccessful completionfeasibleandprobable.
Thereisanintriguing,oftenmagnetic qualityaboutsomethingthatis completelydifferentandoutside standardexpectations.In ultrarunning,thatthingisTheBarkley Marathons.Iamthinkingaboutit becauseitistakingplaceasIwritethis
TheracewasthebrainchildofGaryCantrell(akaLaz),a responsetohearingabouttheescapebyMartinLutherKing Jr.’sassassin,JamesEarlRay,fromtheBrushyMountain StatePenitentiaryinTennessee.Raywascapturedafter54.5 hours;hehadtravelledabout12milesthroughthe inhospitablewilderness.Laz,whowasarunnerandlivedin thearea,felthecoulddomuchbetter.Heandsomeofhis friendsbegantryingoutlongrunsinthosemountains.An informalracebeganintheearlyeighties.Laznamedthe eventafterhisfriendandneighbour,BarryBarkley,and formalizeditasasecreteventin1986.Fouryearsago,Ispent sometimeat3DaysattheFairtalkingwithmyfriendDoyle Carpenteraboutthisrace.Doyle,anAmericanultrarunning legend,wasoneoftheoriginalparticipants,andhetoldme someoftheearlyhistoryoftheBarkley.
Itisaneventwithanauraofmystery.Intheory,it’sarace consistingoffive20to25-mileloops,withabout12,000feet ofclimbing.Runnersbattlethehills,brambleandbushand generallywetandoftencoldconditions.Butthereisno officialwebsite,asecretentryprocess,noavailablecourse map,andnoofficialprintedlistofentrants.Thoseseeking entrymustsubmitanessaywiththeirreasonsforwantingto takepart.Uponacceptance,anentrantreceivesaletterof “condolence”.Onlyabout40peoplegetachanceeachyear. Thefeeis$1.60,thecostofpostageforLaz’sletter,aswellas alicenseplatefromyourhomestateorcountryifyouarea first-timer.Theplatesarehunginthecampground.Runners aregiventhecourseoutlinethedaybeforetherace.The
startingtimeisanytimewithina12-hourwindow. Lazsimplygivesthemaone-hourwarningwhen heblowsaconchshell.Itcouldbedaytimeor nighttime.Sincetherace’sinception,onlyfifteen oftherace’sapproximatelyonethousandentrants havecompleteditsuccessfully,eventhoughyou areallowed60hourstocompletetheslightly morethan100miles.Noonehasfinishedinthe lastfiveyears.
Thecourse,throughthickwoodland,isunmarked. ParticipantsarenotallowedtowearGPSwatches. Instead,theyareissuedcheapwatchessotheycan atleastknowhowmuchtimehaselapsed.Laz places10to12booksonthecoursetoserveas checkpoints.Arunner’sbibnumberisthepage numbertheyneedtoripoutofeachbookand presenttoLazatthecompletionofeachloopas proofofcoveringthecourse.Whenheadingout foranotherlap,therunnerreceivesanewbib number.Aloopmustbecompletedinunder12 hoursinordertobeginanotherinanattemptto finishthefullcourse.Thefirsttwolapsaredonein onedirectionandthenexttwointheopposite direction.Ifanyonemakesitasfaraswantingto gooutonafifthloop,thefirstpersoningetsto choosehisorherdirectionandanylaterrunners alternatedirectionbackandforth.Asaresult,itis notpossibleforparticipantstoworktogetherat theend.Throughouttheevent,whenan unsuccessfulentrantreturnstothestartinggate

Fortheintentofthisarticle,it wasthejourneyand experiencesIhadwithmy children'shealthissues,their foodallergies,sensitivities,and intolerancesthatgavethese expressionssuchrelevancy. Earinfections,tonsillitis,bedwetting,constantcolds,eczema,asthma,failuretothrive, stomachpain,fevers,lackofappetite,vomiting,andbehaviouralvolatilityarejust someofthemanystrugglespeopleexperiencewiththeirchildren.Forme,Iwas determinedtodiscoverwhy.
Thetonsilsarelymphatictissue,partofthefirstimmuneresponseourbodiescan signalwith.Thestandardresponseistoremovethemasifthebodyismakinga mistakesomehow.Whatif,justwhatif,yourchildisonlyunwellwithchronicor frequentearinfections,enlargedadenoidsorinflamedtonsilsbecauseoffood allergiesorintolerances?Takeawaythetriggerswithaguided,eliminationdietand seewhatthebodycando!
Thiswasthemostamazingexperienceformychildren.Wasithard?Yes,absolutely. Wemadehugechangestoremovedietarytriggersandsubstitutenutritiousfoodsfor themtoeatinstead.Latenightsofbakingandcookingforholidaysandoccasions, packingfoodforlunchesorvisitingotherplaces,tryingtocomeupwithalternatives sothattheyhadfoodthatlookedlikewhattheirfriendsandclassmateshad.
Itwashardandoftenexhausting(especiallyinthe1980swhenspecialityfoodswere notreadilyavailable!).Theseweremychildren.Therewardswereextraordinary! Observingthechangesintheirhealthbyexcludingthe"trigger"foodsandwatching theirbodies'remarkableabilitytocorrecttheproblemstheyhadsufferedforyearswas astounding.Forthreeandahalfdecades,Ihavehelpedothershelpthemselves.It'smy passion,mymission.

AccordingtotheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation: Anxietyisanemotioncharacterizedbyfeelingsoftension,worriedthoughts,andphysicalchanges likeincreasedbloodpressure.Peoplewithanxietydisordersusuallyhaverecurringintrusive thoughtsorconcerns.Theymayavoidcertainsituationsoutofworry.
Afriendoncedescribedanxietyasirrationalthoughtsinarationalsituation.Acertainamountof stresscanteachuscopingskills,provideperspectivewhensituationsarrive,andhelpusdealwith issues.Unfortunately,anxiety,ratherthanhealthystress,isgrowingrapidlyformanyfolks. ThefollowingisbyMichelleD.GuerreroandJoelD.BarnesAugust2022StatisticsCanada: ManyCanadianshaveexperiencedworsementalhealthsincetheonsetoftheCOVID-19pandemic. InMay2020,38%ofsurveyrespondentsinCanadaindicatedadeteriorationinmentalhealthsince COVID-19began.Identifiedemotionalchallengeslinkedwithdeteriorationinmentalhealth includedfeelinganxiousandworried(46%),sad(26%),stressed(37%),andlonely(30%). Furthermore,fewerCanadianadultsreportedhighself-perceivedmentalhealthin2020(60%)than in2019(67%).TheproportionofCanadians(15yearsandolder)whoindicatedthattheirmental healthwas"verygood"or"excellent"decreasedby14%from2018(68%)to2020(54%).Datafrom eightCanadianprovincesrevealedthattheprevalenceofmajor depressivedisorderduringthefallof2020(16%)wasmorethan twotimeshighercomparedwiththeyears(2015to2019) predatingCOVID-19(7%).Othernationaldatashowed thatthepercentageofadultswithself-reported depressionmorethandoubled(4%versus10%), andthenumberofadultswhoindicatedthat theiranxietywas"hightoextremelyhigh" quadrupledsincetheonsetofthe pandemic(5%versus20%).
