Ihaveoneofthosefriendswho,inthebeginning,wasabusiness client,andthatwasaboutit.Thisgentlemanhasagood30years onmeandfromtheoutsidelookingin,youwouldthinkthat wouldbeall.
Healwaysseemstohaveacommon-senseapproachtolifeandI appreciatehisartistictalent.Ourfriendshipshiftedthemorewe talkedaboutsports,baseball,hockey,andbasketball,andwe slowlybegantrustingoneanotherwithdeeperconversations aboutlifeanditsupsanddowns.
Itsoonbecameweeklyvisitswithcoffeeandcookies.Itjust happened,andourfriendshipgrew.Wewouldsitinthebigchairs inthestudio,surroundedbysomeofhisstunningpaintings,and theradiowouldbeplayingmusicfromthe40stothe70s,hisgas fireplacepushingoutthewarmththatfilledtheroom.Weboth wouldtellafewstories(andmakeupafewalongtheway)and chatabouteverythingfromtheworldcrisisthatday,towhythe Leafshadn'twonthecupsince67.Allingoodfunandfriendship. Unfortunately,myfriend'shealthhasslipped.Heisnowinthe
hospital.Iwasabletositwithhimrecentlyandcatchup.Itwas greattoseehim,tosharetimewithhimandchat. HeandIknowthatlifehaschanged,butwebothappreciatethat wecanstillhaveourvisitsandacookieortwo!Maybeour conversationshavechanged,andlifeisseenthroughadifferent lensthesedays,butthefriendshipremainsthesame! Yourfriendsmakelifehappierandprovidethatkickinthepants onceinawhiletogetyoumoving.Theysharewhotheyarein momentsofsadnessandjoyandhelpbringclaritytoaneverchangingworld. Forme,asIgrowolder,itseemswinterhas becomeaseasontotolerateratherthana seasontocelebrate.ButwhenIwasyoung,I lovedthewinterasmuchasanyseason.Now, nearlyseventyyearslater,playinghockeyatthe neighbourhoodrinkisoneofthestrongest memoriesofmylife.Thehappinessnever leavesmewhenIthinkaboutthosedays.
Ididn’tgetmyfirstpairofskatesuntilIwas nineyearsold,andIlearnedtoskateonmy own.Myparentsdidn’tskate.Iwouldcrossthe road,negotiateanembankment,andpractice onalittlesectionoficeonthecreek.Ineversaw anotherpersontherethatwholewinter.The nextyear,Ifeltconfidentenoughtoventure overtothelocaloutdoorrink.Playingpick-up sportsatWedgewoodParkismyfondest memoryofgrowingup,andthehockeyseason wasthebest.Thenaturalicerinkwasflooded everynight,weatherpermitting,from December15toFebruary15byMr.Fisher,a semi-retiredlocalresident.Themunicipalparks divisionprovidedabighose,andtherewere lights.Inearlierdays,therehadbeenrink boards,butbythetimeIarrived,theyhad becometoobatteredtobesafe,andtheywere neverreplaced.Forthisreason,ourrinkwas actuallybiggerthanallthesurroundingarea rinks.Itwasframedbypiledsnow.
WhenIfirstwentthere,Ihadsomecatchingup todoasIhadonlybeenskatingforashort while.Mycompetitivenaturetookover,andI mademyselfcatchup.Ialreadyknewsomeof theboys,anditwasonlyboys.Thefirstwinter, IbecameclosefriendswithSuds,another sportsnutandanexcellentathlete.Duringmy thirdyearskating,IjoinedtheFutureAces
HockeySchoolatMitchellField,anoutdoor artificialrink.Beginningthefollowingseason,I playedontheirteamsuntiltheendofmy Midgetyear.Afterthat,IplayedDivision1 interfacultyhockeyattheUniversityofToronto andlaterinvariousleaguesuntilmymid-forties. Ofitall,myfavouritedayswerethepick-up shinnygamesforseveralwinters,most afternoonsandmanyeveningsofmyyouth.I wouldputmyskatesonathome,walkthrough ourbackyardandthenthroughaneighbour’s propertyuntilIreachedtheroadtothepark. Theroadwasnotpaved,andsometimesthe sideswouldbefrozenfairlysmoothly. Conditionsweresometimesexcellentfor skatingallthewaytothepark,abouthalfa kilometre.WhenIwasabouthalfwaythere, skatingorwalkingwithmyskateguardson,the rinkwouldappear.Ifitwasafternoon,the smooth,oftenuntouchedicewouldbe gleaming.WhenIwouldcomebackafter dinner,Icouldseethelightsshiningandhear thesoundsofhappyvoicesandofthegame itselfbeforeIcouldseetheice.Itwasmagicfor me,justlikewhenI’dseetheperfecticeat MapleLeafGardensbeforeaLeafsgame.
Iftherewereonlyafewearlyarrivers,wewould playhoguntilenoughplayersshowedup,as theyalwaysdid,foragame.Somehowwewould inevitablyhavetherightnumberforagreat match,usuallysixtoeightaside.OnceIgotto knoweveryone,mostoftenIselectedtheteams, asIunderstoodeveryone’sabilityandknew evenly-balancedteamsmadeforthemostfun. Sometimeswewouldhavetwocaptainswho wouldstandtogetherofftothesideandpick. PartofthemagicthatIdidn’trecognizeatthe timewasthatwealwaysseemedtohavethe rightnumbers.Also,wewereallrelativelyclose inage.Inmostcases,wehadtheentireice surfacetoourselves.Weusedrubberbootsor snowpilesasgoalposts.Raisingthepuckwas notallowed.Thatrulewastakenseriously becausewedidn’twearpads,andwedidn’t haveboardsaroundtherink.
Occasionally,agroupofolderguyswouldcome andhavealateeveninggame.Oneofthem playedJuniorhockeyandwasaneighbourhood hero.TheywouldletSudsandmeplay,andwe hadfunhoundingthem,tryingtogetthepuck. IdorememberoneSaturdaywhentherewere abouttwentyskatersperside,andthatwas terrificfuntoo.
ThatrinkandthatenvironmentarewhereI honedmyskills,suchastheywere.Ibecamea
strongskaterandpuckhandlerbutnever developedadecentshot,evenasanadult. IwasallowedtostayaslateasIwantedand wouldsometimespracticemyskatingandstickhandlingaftereveryoneelsehadgonehome.My dadknewexactlywhereIwas.
Idon’trememberthespecificsofanyofour games.However,Icanstillnamealltheregular participants.Icanstillrecallthethrillofseeingthe ice,thejoyofaperfectsurface,thedayswhenit waspartiallymelted,thehopingforsomeextra goodweatherdaysattheendoftheseasonsowe couldhaveafewmoresessionsandeventheodd cigarbuttfromoldMr.Fisher,frozenintheice. Ialsolikedtocleantheice.Therewerealwaysa coupleofsnowshovelsleftthere,andafavourite activityofminewasclearingtheiceifneededor cleaningitafterweweredone.Therewas somethingfulfillingaboutskatingbackandforth, overandover,withtheshovel.WhenIshovel snownowadays,backandforthacrossmy driveway,itevokesthosememories.
SomedaysIwishIcouldgobacktomychildhood. It’snottochangethingsbuttofeelafewthings again.

Everyoneofushasspecialmemoriesofour childhoodwinters.Wemayhaveenjoyed skiingwithfamily,buildingasnowmanwith grandparents,skatingacrossfrozenponds,or tobogganingdownthatlocalskihillwithour buddies!Askids,weforgotaboutthecoldand wentoutintothefrozentundra,whichis Canada,andplayed!Thatfresh,crispairand thoserosyredcheeksmadeforafundaythat wouldstickinourminds,likethetasteofa smoothhotchocolate!
WhyamItakingthistripdownmemorylane? Well,toremindyouthatjustbecausewearea littleolder,movealittleslower,andwhinea bitmore,westillneedtogetoutandenjoy winterandkeepourbodiesmoving!Awinter skateismygo-to.Strappingonthebladesand grabbingmystickforagameofshinnyhas alwaysbeenfun!Anotheroptionis snowshoeing.It'sagreatworkout,andI alwayssleepwellafterasolidhourofwalking inawinterwonderland.Youmaypreferjust goingforawalk.Makesureyousliponagood pairofspikesoveryourboots,justtobesafe!!! Weallweatherstorms,butnot everyonemayfeelresilientor havethebackupoffamilyand friends.Yet,weallhaveitinus. Theseexperienceshavegiven methebenefitofhonouring thingswithgrace.Theability(as bestasIcan)offirstconsciously beingabletoobserveasituation withoutpassingjudgementon someoneelse.
Hencethisarticletoday.Irecentlyexperiencedandrespondedtoaveryheart-wrenching situation.Iamverysensitivetoseeingothersindifficultsituations.Wedon'tknowtheir story,andweneedtobehumanetooneanother.Anyonethatknowsmeisawareofmy compassionforpeopleandanimals.Wehavearesponsibilitytorecognizetheneedof others,findunderstandingandtreatthembetter.
Youmayhavenoticedsomeofthemanyinneedinourcommunity.Peoplewithshopping carts,ormaybeabicycle,piledhighwiththeirbelongings(thediscardsofothers).It's importanttoseethemaspeople,ashumansneedinghelp.Imagine,foraninstant,what itmightfeelliketohaveeverythingyoupossess,allyouhavetosurvivethroughthe winter,piledinashoppingcart.
WhenImet“WanderWoman”(everyonedeservesthedignityofaname),shewas searchingthroughourneighbourhood'srecyclebins.Ifirstfeltconcernedanddisturbed. ButthenIaskedmyself,"why?"I'venothingtofearfromhersituation.Igothomeand couldseeshewouldbeclosetomyhousesoon.Igrabbedsomecannedproteinsandfresh fruitandtookthemout,waitingforhertonoticemeasshesearchedbinsontheopposite sideofthestreet.
Whathappenednextcrumpledmeinsideandmomentarilytookmybreathaway.My hearthurtsobadlyforher.WanderWomansawmestandingonmylawn.Shestoppedin themiddleoftheroad,turnedhershoulderawayfromme,andraisedhershawlandarm toshieldherhead.Webothfrozewithentirelydifferentexpectations.Irecognizedthat whatIwasholding,inherreality,werepotentialweaponstobehurledathermere presence.Fortheloveofwhateveryouholddearandbelievein,noone,nocreature, deservestobetreatedlike"lessthan".
The"stand-off",thoughshocking,wasbrief.TheimpactonmeisnotsomethingIwill forget.Ever.
WanderWomanpeakedoverhershawl,droppingitjustenoughtoseeme.ItoldherIhad somefoodforherandaskedpermissiontoputitinhercart.Shesmiledhesitantlyandsaid yes.Recyclingtruckswereloominginthedistance.Shewatched,concerned,andIasked ifshecoulduseablanket.
"Yes,thankyousoverymuch,"washerresponse.
Offshewenttogather.Igotherablanket,towel,washcloth,soapandlotion,packedthem intoaplasticbagtoprotectthemfromthedrizzle,andaddedsomecleangarbagebags. Iplacedtheitemsinhercart,andthatwastheendofourinteraction.Wewentour separateways.
Isawherasafellowhuman,asdeservingasanyofus.Wecanallhelp(youcanstay anonymousifthathelps);wecancertainlydobetter,onepersonatatime.Peopleneedto humanizetheplightofourfellowhumanbeingsandkeepjudgementoutofit.Wedon't knowtheirstory,theirjourneyorpath,thecardstheyweredealtorthedecisionsthatled towheretheyare.Youcanbethelight,thehope,thekindnessofadifferentpath.
