Friendship By: Dave Scott Friendships sometimes form in the most usual ways, with folks you would think you have absolutely nothing in common. Then you find commonality and a few subjects to be the perfect fit for that never-ending conversation.

I have one of those friends who, in the beginning, was a business client, and that was about it. This gentleman has a good 30 years on me and from the outside looking in, you would think that would be all.

He always seems to have a common-sense approach to life and I appreciate his artistic talent. Our friendship shifted the more we talked about sports, baseball, hockey, and basketball, and we slowly began trusting one another with deeper conversations about life and its ups and downs.

It soon became weekly visits with coffee and cookies. It just happened, and our friendship grew. We would sit in the big chairs in the studio, surrounded by some of his stunning paintings, and the radio would be playing music from the 40s to the 70s, his gas fireplace pushing out the warmth that filled the room. We both would tell a few stories (and make up a few along the way) and chat about everything from the world crisis that day, to why the Leafs hadn't won the cup since 67. All in good fun and friendship.

Unfortunately, my friend's health has slipped. He is now in the hospital. I was able to sit with him recently and catch up. It was great to see him, to share time with him and chat.

He and I know that life has changed, but we both appreciate that we can still have our visits and a cookie or two! Maybe our conversations have changed, and life is seen through a different lens these days, but the friendship remains the same!

Your friends make life happier and provide that kick in the pants once in a while to get you moving. They share who they are in moments of sadness and joy and help bring clarity to an everchanging world.

Every friendship offers something different in your personal growth, young or old. We all can learn from our friends at any age!

For me, as I grow older, it seems winter has become a season to tolerate rather than a season to celebrate. But when I was young, I loved the winter as much as any season. Now, nearly seventy years later, playing hockey at the neighbourhood rink is one of the strongest memories of my life. The happiness never leaves me when I think about those days.

I didn’t get my first pair of skates until I was nine years old, and I learned to skate on my own. My parents didn’t skate. I would cross the road, negotiate an embankment, and practice on a little section of ice on the creek. I never saw another person there that whole winter. The next year, I felt confident enough to venture over to the local outdoor rink. Playing pick-up sports at Wedgewood Park is my fondest memory of growing up, and the hockey season was the best. The natural ice rink was flooded every night, weather permitting, from December 15 to February 15 by Mr. Fisher, a semi-retired local resident. The municipal parks division provided a big hose, and there were lights. In earlier days, there had been rink boards, but by the time I arrived, they had become too battered to be safe, and they were never replaced. For this reason, our rink was actually bigger than all the surrounding area rinks. It was framed by piled snow.

When I first went there, I had some catching up to do as I had only been skating for a short while. My competitive nature took over, and I made myself catch up. I already knew some of the boys, and it was only boys. The first winter, I became close friends with Suds, another sports nut and an excellent athlete. During my third year skating, I joined the Future Aces

Hockey School at Mitchell Field, an outdoor artificial rink. Beginning the following season, I played on their teams until the end of my Midget year. After that, I played Division 1 interfaculty hockey at the University of Toronto and later in various leagues until my mid-forties.

Of it all, my favourite days were the pick-up shinny games for several winters, most afternoons and many evenings of my youth. I would put my skates on at home, walk through our backyard and then through a neighbour’s property until I reached the road to the park.

The road was not paved, and sometimes the sides would be frozen fairly smoothly.

Conditions were sometimes excellent for skating all the way to the park, about half a kilometre. When I was about halfway there, skating or walking with my skate guards on, the rink would appear. If it was afternoon, the smooth, often untouched ice would be gleaming. When I would come back after dinner, I could see the lights shining and hear the sounds of happy voices and of the game itself before I could see the ice. It was magic for me, just like when I’d see the perfect ice at Maple Leaf Gardens before a Leafs game.

If there were only a few early arrivers, we would play hog until enough players showed up, as they always did, for a game. Somehow we would inevitably have the right number for a great match, usually six to eight a side. Once I got to know everyone, most often I selected the teams, as I understood everyone’s ability and knew evenly-balanced teams made for the most fun.

Sometimes we would have two captains who would stand together off to the side and pick.

Part of the magic that I didn’t recognize at the time was that we always seemed to have the right numbers. Also, we were all relatively close in age. In most cases, we had the entire ice surface to ourselves. We used rubber boots or snow piles as goalposts. Raising the puck was not allowed. That rule was taken seriously because we didn’t wear pads, and we didn’t have boards around the rink.

Occasionally, a group of older guys would come and have a late evening game. One of them played Junior hockey and was a neighbourhood hero. They would let Suds and me play, and we had fun hounding them, trying to get the puck.

I do remember one Saturday when there were about twenty skaters per side, and that was terrific fun too.

That rink and that environment are where I honed my skills, such as they were. I became a

strong skater and puck handler but never developed a decent shot, even as an adult.

I was allowed to stay as late as I wanted and would sometimes practice my skating and stickhandling after everyone else had gone home. My dad knew exactly where I was.

I don’t remember the specifics of any of our games. However, I can still name all the regular participants. I can still recall the thrill of seeing the ice, the joy of a perfect surface, the days when it was partially melted, the hoping for some extra good weather days at the end of the season so we could have a few more sessions and even the odd cigar butt from old Mr. Fisher, frozen in the ice.

I also liked to clean the ice. There were always a couple of snow shovels left there, and a favourite activity of mine was clearing the ice if needed or cleaning it after we were done. There was something fulfilling about skating back and forth, over and over, with the shovel. When I shovel snow nowadays, back and forth across my driveway, it evokes those memories.

Some days I wish I could go back to my childhood.

It’s not to change things but to feel a few things again.

Winter Fun! By: Dave Scott Every one of us has special memories of our childhood winters. We may have enjoyed skiing with family, building a snowman with grandparents, skating across frozen ponds, or tobogganing down that local ski hill with our buddies! As kids, we forgot about the cold and went out into the frozen tundra, which is Canada, and played! That fresh, crisp air and those rosy red cheeks made for a fun day that would stick in our minds, like the taste of a smooth hot chocolate!

Why am I taking this trip down memory lane?

Well, to remind you that just because we are a little older, move a little slower, and whine a bit more, we still need to get out and enjoy winter and keep our bodies moving! A winter skate is my go-to. Strapping on the blades and grabbing my stick for a game of shinny has always been fun! Another option is snowshoeing. It's a great workout, and I always sleep well after a solid hour of walking in a winter wonderland. You may prefer just going for a walk. Make sure you slip on a good pair of spikes over your boots, just to be safe!!!

We don't need any unnecessary tumbles, now do we. A couple of buddies of mine always hit the cross-country ski trails and swear it is the best winter workout! They may be right!!

In the last couple of years, you may have seen a lot of groups winter mountain biking with oversized tires (Fatboy Mountain Bikes). It is one of the fastest-growing sports locally!

Check with your local club about trail conditions and how to start riding. Don't forget downhill skiing. You may have to travel a bit, but it is an excellent winter outdoor activity.

Think about some of the positive health benefits of getting out there this winter: it boosts your immune system, provides excellent cardiovascular workouts, improves your mood, burns more calories, and there’s that vitamin D boost...

Remember to dress in layers. I like moisture-wicking clothing as my inside layer, then a fleece jacket followed by an outer shell to keep the wind out. I have to have my long johns and track pants, followed again by an outer shell, and I always cover my hands and ears (no one wants frostbite!). Remember that toque and those sunglasses! Now get moving and enjoy the winter because it will be spring before you know it!

Change usually happens with a bit of discomfort and uncertainty, but what a beautiful and powerful energy to start the new year with! We can open our hearts, grow and make a difference.

Our family experienced a very vulnerable time many years ago when our children were young.

A failed business venture left us in four years of significant financial hardship and ultimately without a home.

Thankfully, our first-world reality was that we had family, and our worst-case scenario would only ever be having to move in temporarily with one set of parents or the other. We managed to find a very tiny home to rent from some very good people. We would be okay.

Warm, loved, and nourished, we survived and are stronger for it. Life experiences are what influence our response to a situation. This is one of many reasons I keep my mind and heart open.

We all weather storms, but not everyone may feel resilient or have the backup of family and friends. Yet, we all have it in us.

These experiences have given me the benefit of honouring things with grace. The ability (as best as I can) of first consciously being able to observe a situation without passing judgement on someone else.

Hence this article today. I recently experienced and responded to a very heart-wrenching situation. I am very sensitive to seeing others in difficult situations. We don't know their story, and we need to be humane to one another. Anyone that knows me is aware of my compassion for people and animals. We have a responsibility to recognize the need of others, find understanding and treat them better.

You may have noticed some of the many in need in our community. People with shopping carts, or maybe a bicycle, piled high with their belongings (the discards of others). It's important to see them as people, as humans needing help. Imagine, for an instant, what it might feel like to have everything you possess, all you have to survive through the winter, piled in a shopping cart.

When I met “Wander Woman” (everyone deserves the dignity of a name), she was searching through our neighbourhood's recycle bins. I first felt concerned and disturbed.

But then I asked myself, "why?" I've nothing to fear from her situation. I got home and could see she would be close to my house soon. I grabbed some canned proteins and fresh fruit and took them out, waiting for her to notice me as she searched bins on the opposite side of the street.

What happened next crumpled me inside and momentarily took my breath away. My heart hurt so badly for her. Wander Woman saw me standing on my lawn. She stopped in the middle of the road, turned her shoulder away from me, and raised her shawl and arm to shield her head. We both froze with entirely different expectations. I recognized that what I was holding, in her reality, were potential weapons to be hurled at her mere presence. For the love of whatever you hold dear and believe in, no one, no creature, deserves to be treated like "less than".

The "stand-off", though shocking, was brief. The impact on me is not something I will forget. Ever.

Wander Woman peaked over her shawl, dropping it just enough to see me. I told her I had some food for her and asked permission to put it in her cart. She smiled hesitantly and said yes. Recycling trucks were looming in the distance. She watched, concerned, and I asked if she could use a blanket.

"Yes, thank you so very much," was her response.

Off she went to gather. I got her a blanket, towel, washcloth, soap and lotion, packed them into a plastic bag to protect them from the drizzle, and added some clean garbage bags.

I placed the items in her cart, and that was the end of our interaction. We went our separate ways.

I saw her as a fellow human, as deserving as any of us. We can all help (you can stay anonymous if that helps); we can certainly do better, one person at a time. People need to humanize the plight of our fellow human beings and keep judgement out of it. We don't know their story, their journey or path, the cards they were dealt or the decisions that led to where they are. You can be the light, the hope, the kindness of a different path.

I write this to call attention to the belief that we need a new agenda for 2023 and the future. We can each do better, and every action counts. Thank you for reading and considering.

Hi, my name is Kevin, I'm here with Katherine, a dog trainer from The Crunchy Canine.

How did you get started with training dogs?

Ten years ago, I adopted Jackson, a 1-year-old shepherd crossed with a Doberman. He had many behaviours, so I volunteered with a rescue, did lots of hands-on work and started an apprenticeship with his dog trainer.

Are you the owner of The Crunchy Canine?

Yes, I am. I was the only trainer for the first four years, and then I added two new trainers and an office manager.

Where are you located?

We are in Simcoe but closer to Port Dover.

Is the training done at your location, or do you travel?

We do both. Most training is done at clients' houses, but we have just finished building a heated training facility and still working on a fenced-in outdoor area at my house.

Is it seasonal, or do you train all year round?

We train all year round. We bundle up in the winter because most of our training work needs to be done outside.

Is there an age limit for dogs to start training?

We start puppy training at eight weeks old to set a good foundation. There is no age limit, though, as long as people are willing to put in the work.

What training programs do you offer?

We have a variety of training, including private in-home, group training, fun sport, puppy socialisation, and enrichment.

Are service dogs harder to train?

Yes, they are because they are held to a much higher standard than a regular pet dog. Going out in public adds an extra challenge to the training when they also have to focus on their tasks.
