Lyme Video Watch & learn By: Dave Scott Roughly nine years ago a family member began to struggle with their health and received misdiagnoses after misdiagnoses. My wife and I actually asked about Lyme, but the doctor at the time ruled it out. Little did we know how unreliable the testing for Lyme was. We listened to our doctor who was only doing his job, but as time went on we kept returning to Lyme. Finally, we paid and had blood work done in the States. The results came back positive for Lyme disease.

It was a punch to the gut and a relief at the same time, but at least now we had a starting point for the long road ahead.

It was a sobering lesson finding out just how little was known about Lyme, how little was being done to educate the general population, and how little was in place to assist those struggling with the disease. On top of that, there was no way of finding out if a tick was carrying Lyme bacteria or any vector-borne illness.

As a result, we decided to start a local Lyme support group. Seven folks attended that first meeting and every month after, our group continued to grow. We noticed there was a consistent theme voiced by people struggling with Lyme and their loved ones. Folks wished that there was a quick, efficient, reliable way of finding out if the tick they had removed carried a form of Lyme bacteria.

Six years later we now have a few more answers. A heartfelt thank you to the Port Dover Foundation for their support in creating this video. We hope the information shared will help you to stay safe.

In the video, we chat with Mike Marini, Pharmacist and owner of Dover Apothecary, as he shares his knowledge on Lyme in the Haldimand and Norfolk areas.

We talk with folks who are living with Lyme.

How often have I said, “But I’ve always done it that way.” or “That’s not how I do it.”? Too often.

I’m not talking about changing because of the expectations of others or because of any need to fit in. I’m talking about adapting to and improving upon, my personal circumstances.

As I am aging, my physical capabilities are diminishing. That does not mean it is time to give up doing physical chores and completely rely on the services of others. I do not have to give up cutting my own lawn, shovelling my own snow, cooking my own meals, driving myself, etc.

However, it has become apparent that I can’t run like I used to, so I walk more, and I can’t go down stairs like I used to, so I descend one step at a time, and there are a few other things related to my replacement knees and my balance. I have to adapt in order to retain my independence. I am fighting to keep that independence with all my will.

That being said, some change simply makes good sense and it’s not entirely about aging either. New systems and technologies can make indisputable improvements on the ways of earlier years. The ideas of others are frequently better than mine.

How willing am I to incorporate new ways of doing things, as opposed to clinging to familiar methods and routines through habit and inertia?

For example, I still pay my bills by mail.

The whole process of change is not as simple as just saying, “Okay, I’ll do it the new and improved way.” People often find it harder to adapt to new situations and methods as they age. Activity in a key brain circuit that allows us to adapt to change fades with age. This circuit is critical to developing new strategies to meet goals. For example, when a person experiences a big change in life such as acquiring a disability or moving to a new house, they must change the way they meet everyday goals. Younger people find it easier to cope with such change by finding new ways of acting to achieve their goals. But if older people stop trying to adapt, they run the risk of becoming apathetic. The brain is similar to a muscle. The more you work it, the more it responds.

In general, older persons are less adaptable because they respond more slowly to stimuli and take longer to learn new material.

Sometimes there is a fear of change because we think our coping skills will be too limited.

Sometimes we simply forget what we were going to implement and we revert to patterns and techniques we are comfortable with.

A key to the successful implementation of beneficial change is motivation. I will be much more likely to change a methodology or a routine if it is what I have determined I want for myself, whether I thought of it or not, rather than something someone else is just telling me is best for me. I have to buy into the adaptation.

As with my upcoming move to a smaller house and property, I am trying to be proactive, setting myself up while I have control of the process, not being forced into something because I no longer have the capability or will to make appropriate, beneficial decisions.

It is simply a fact that as you age, your body will change. How you approach these changes can determine how big the impact is on your life.

The following are seven generally age-related changes many older adults face: arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, vision and hearing loss, influenza and pneumonia, and balance and stability issues. There are various ways to help avoid and to manage these agerelated challenges.

If it is important to you to live the best life that you can, then you will try to look after your physical, mental and emotional health. As abilities and circumstances evolve, it seems obvious to me that change, and learning to change, are essential. Once you allow yourself to

change when it is needed to improve your situation, once you do make a change, you will become aware of the benefits and so begin to feel a renewed sense of well-being.

I have made some decisions to change and have had suggestions given to me by people I respect.

I have followed up. I have come to understand that the process takes time for me. My natural inclination is to stay with what I am used to, but the more I think about a proposed change, the more likely I will end up agreeing. I am fortunate to know people who have good knowledge and also a good understanding of me.

Now is always a time to learn and now is always a time to consider what is beneficial in order to grow as a person. I don’t believe in change for the sake of change. However, I am learning to believe that constant resistance to change is not the way to be. Change is opportunity. The world, and my life, are not what they were years ago.

Time to fly.

Remember that day, a few months ago, when the Rogers network went down all across the country? Well, I was at the Lester B. Pearson airport terminal that day. I have got to tell you it was very interesting! The flight board was as red as a ripe Norfolk tomato, with delayed and cancelled flights falling like Rogers stock that day! In some corners of the terminal, you could sense tension rising faster than the humidity outside.

There were long lines at the customer service desk as folks tried to gather information about their flights and how long the delays would be.

I realised there was nothing I could do. My flight kept getting delayed, so I thought this was a great day for people-watching, and grabbed some lunch! As I sat there eating, I realized all the background noise in the restaurant came from folks talking to one another. They had no cell service, so they were forced to talk face to face! What a concept.

Mind you, the most common question was, "Do you have cell service yet?" People were chatting away with the servers and turning to complete strangers and striking up a conversation. Maybe as a society we still have a chance.

Another bizarre thing I saw that day was a group of folks waiting in front of the closed glass door to their flight boarding area, even after they had been told it was delayed for two hours. They were standing silent with no cell reception, looking ahead, all wearing the required mask. I am talking about a group of at least two hundred people standing and staring like "cows at a passing train," Don Henly.

I decided to grab a coffee. (Sorry, I will not stand and look at a glass door. Thank goodness I have

a short attention span!) While in line for coffee, three young women walked by without a mask on. I could hear the customs agent behind me sigh and then politely ask the women to put their masks on while at the airport. They did.

Quietly, I asked the agent how many times a day he had to say that. His tired eyes looked up at me as he said, "Every flight from New York, we have to remind the folks they are in Canada now."

I asked him how life at the airport had been over the last two years. He chuckled and said, "You wouldn’t believe some of the stories." He shared that he goes home at night and tells his wife some of the antics and she doesn't believe him.

I asked him to tell me one, and he replied, "Well, just last week, a guy wanted to take his machete on a plane. He was upset when we said no and began to refuse to listen… a machete!!!" He explained that in the last few years, people's perception of right and wrong has changed at the airport and has made all facets of all airport employees' jobs a little more strenuous.

At the far end of the terminal, I passed the three girls again, their masks pulled down! They really didn’t care what the agent said. Soon enough, he would see them and repeat the same conversation. Sad, you know, no one wants to wear a mask, but with so many people connecting from all over the world in one spot, perhaps we need to protect the folks who work day in and day out at the airport for us!

Hey, they are calling my flight… time to go.

Fall weather brings cooler, drier air which can make our hair brittle, fly away and unmanageable. In cooler weather, we typically use more heat to style our hair. Before using any heat stylers on your hair, apply a heat protectant to help prevent breakage.

Unchecked inflammation is a global wildfire with devastating effects on our everyday well-being. This “trend” over the last several decades is likely the biggest causative factor for so much suffering and may be one of the main mechanisms responsible for varying degrees of everyday suffering and impacting our quality of life. Sadly, we see the effects and destruction affecting people (and pets), at all life stages and throughout all socioeconomic brackets.

Any condition ending with “itis”, along with a vast number of health conditions are driven, caused, or aggravated by inflammation that has “gone out of control”. Whether it is our joints, brains, skin, digestive system or any other organ system or disease, unrelenting inflammation will wreak havoc. Cumulative and chronic, we need to stop fueling the fires!

As a global society, much of that destructive inflammation is being fueled by our eating

and lifestyle habits! Pain, whether physical, mental or emotional, is worsened and in many cases, caused by inflammation that has become uncontrolled.

Don’t get me wrong, inflammation is an amazing built-in mechanism and when controlled, helps us combat infections along with the necessary healing tools to assist acute injury etc. It brings the right tools to the job at hand and can be lifesaving! Sadly, our everyday diets, lifestyles, and habits as a global society, have become increasingly more damaging. We unwittingly fuel this wildfire with little to no understanding of how it contributes to and robs us of our health and wellbeing.

If you knew you could eat differently and practice different everyday habits to reduce your pain or the pain of a loved one, would you? Our bodies are a miracle, we are geared for health at the cellular level and bringing the right tools to the job can be very empowering. Unfortunately, most people have an attachment to negative habits. FOMO (fear of missing out) is a thing!!! We are affixed to habits, traditions, media, family and societal pressures.

There can be a very healthy balance when you understand the level of moderation that works best for you. Understanding triggers is part of that process and something I help my clients work into their lifestyles.

Excess sugar in your blood is perhaps the biggest and most common contributing factor to inflammation. Small dietary changes and avoidance of different negative patterns, increasing your healthy choices little by little, and avoiding your biggest “trigger/ignition” sources can have a positive impact and reduce the level of destruction affecting your health. Managing your stress levels, better sleep habits, consistent levels of activity/exercise, improving PH balance and healthy water can have positive results. There are types of very specific supplementation that can have a significant impact on the unique factors fueling your inflammation and pain. Even negative thought patterns are destructive to us when they become too prevalent and aren’t dealt with constructively.

Hi, I’m Kevin,

and I’m here with Dave Zeldon. Before he took over caring for the community garden, he was a school teacher, and he has written many articles for the Hub magazine.

Where is the community garden located?

It is located on Gilbertson Drive behind the White Horse Bowling Alley.

How did you come up with the idea for a community garden?

John Race started the garden years ago, but due to construction and planning, the garden was cancelled, so in 2008, John asked me if I could establish a new community

garden on some vacant industrial land he owned. We have been here ever since.

How many spaces are available?

There are 30 large plots, 21 by 21 feet, and 4 raised garden beds. The cost is $30 a season and that includes the land being tilled and fertilized with manure when you start. You just have to provide your own plants.

When does the season start and end?

The season usually starts the 3rd week of April and then usually finishes the 3rd week of October.

What items/tools do you supply?

There is a locked tool shed with watering cans, wheelbarrows and small hand tools for gardening. Most of the items kept here have been donated by the community.

How often should you tend your garden?

Minimum once a week, but it would be better if you could do it every other day.

What type of plants can you put in, and when?

In early spring, you can plant spinach, lettuce and beets, or in late summer, you can plant peas. Mid-summer is best for tomatoes.

Healthy Pride By: Dave Scott

I recently had a health occurrence outside of Norfolk County that provided a fuller insight into the folks who make up our healthcare system.

None of us want to use the system. We try to avoid it by staying healthy, but sometimes you need to get your butt to the local hospital ASAP. In my case, the doctors insisted that I stay for a few days, so having no choice, I took them up on their offer.

During my visit, I was impressed by the staff at the hospital. They were compassionate and worked hard. It reminded me that we all need to say thank you more often to our healthcare professionals.

Something else caught my eye that I wanted to share with you today. There were two nurses and a technician, and their background stories made me proud to be Canadian.

The first fellow I met was originally from Columbia. He spoke multiple languages, was softspoken and was simply a caring human being who wanted to help others.

The second was a technician who had come from China to follow her dream in the medical field.

She was bright, articulate, full of energy, again fluid in many languages, and making her life in Canada.

The third was a night nurse who moved here eleven years ago from Swahili. She could speak so many distinct languages, I couldn't count them all. She was damn efficient at her job and at the same time compassionate and invested in what she did. As the morning approached, she said it was raining out. I said, "Oh, that makes for a long day for you." She smiled and said, "I enjoy walking in the rain and hearing its sounds."

Like I said earlier, all the staff were excellent, but these young folks embodied what is a true Canadian. The drive to succeed while being humble, that never say die attitude, the compassion to help others in need, smart, articulate and driven!
