Itwasapunchtothegutandareliefatthesametime,butatleast nowwehadastartingpointforthelongroadahead.
Itwasasoberinglessonfindingoutjusthowlittlewasknownabout Lyme,howlittlewasbeingdonetoeducatethegeneralpopulation, andhowlittlewasinplacetoassistthosestrugglingwiththe disease.Ontopofthat,therewasnowayoffindingoutifatickwas carryingLymebacteriaoranyvector-borneillness.
Asaresult,wedecidedtostartalocalLymesupportgroup.Seven folksattendedthatfirstmeetingandeverymonthafter,ourgroup continuedtogrow.Wenoticedtherewasaconsistentthemevoiced bypeoplestrugglingwithLymeandtheirlovedones.Folkswished thattherewasaquick,efficient,reliablewayoffindingoutifthe ticktheyhadremovedcarriedaformofLymebacteria.

Thewholeprocessofchangeisnotassimpleas justsaying,“Okay,I’lldoitthenewand improvedway.”Peopleoftenfinditharderto adapttonewsituationsandmethodsasthey age.Activityinakeybraincircuitthatallowsus toadapttochangefadeswithage.Thiscircuitis criticaltodevelopingnewstrategiestomeet goals.Forexample,whenapersonexperiences abigchangeinlifesuchasacquiringadisability ormovingtoanewhouse,theymustchange thewaytheymeeteverydaygoals.Younger peoplefinditeasiertocopewithsuchchange byfindingnewwaysofactingtoachievetheir goals.Butifolderpeoplestoptryingtoadapt, theyruntheriskofbecomingapathetic.The brainissimilartoamuscle.Themoreyouwork it,themoreitresponds.
HowoftenhaveIsaid,“ButI’vealwaysdoneit thatway.”or“That’snothowIdoit.”?Toooften. I’mnottalkingaboutchangingbecauseofthe expectationsofothersorbecauseofanyneedto fitin.I’mtalkingaboutadaptingtoandimproving upon,mypersonalcircumstances.

Ingeneral,olderpersonsarelessadaptable becausetheyrespondmoreslowlytostimuli andtakelongertolearnnewmaterial. Sometimesthereisafearofchangebecausewe thinkourcopingskillswillbetoolimited. Sometimeswesimplyforgetwhatwewere goingtoimplementandwereverttopatterns andtechniqueswearecomfortablewith. Aswithmyupcomingmovetoasmallerhouse andproperty,Iamtryingtobeproactive, settingmyselfupwhileIhavecontrolofthe process,notbeingforcedintosomething becauseInolongerhavethecapabilityorwillto makeappropriate,beneficialdecisions.
Itissimplyafactthatasyouage,yourbodywill change.Howyouapproachthesechangescan determinehowbigtheimpactisonyourlife. By:DaveScottRememberthatday,afewmonthsago,when theRogersnetworkwentdownallacrossthe country?Well,IwasattheLesterB.Pearson airportterminalthatday.Ihavegottotellyou itwasveryinteresting!Theflightboardwasas redasaripeNorfolktomato,withdelayedand cancelledflightsfallinglikeRogersstockthat day!Insomecornersoftheterminal,youcould sensetensionrisingfasterthanthehumidity outside.
Therewerelonglinesatthecustomerservice deskasfolkstriedtogatherinformationabout theirflightsandhowlongthedelayswouldbe. IrealisedtherewasnothingIcoulddo.Myflight keptgettingdelayed,soIthoughtthiswasa greatdayforpeople-watching,andgrabbed somelunch!AsIsatthereeating,Irealizedall thebackgroundnoiseintherestaurantcame fromfolkstalkingtooneanother.Theyhadno cellservice,sotheywereforcedtotalkfaceto face!Whataconcept.
Mindyou,themostcommonquestionwas,"Do youhavecellserviceyet?"Peoplewerechatting awaywiththeserversandturningtocomplete strangersandstrikingupaconversation.Maybe asasocietywestillhaveachance.
AnotherbizarrethingIsawthatdaywasa groupoffolkswaitinginfrontoftheclosed glassdoortotheirflightboardingarea,even aftertheyhadbeentolditwasdelayedfortwo hours.Theywerestandingsilentwithnocell reception,lookingahead,allwearingthe requiredmask.Iamtalkingaboutagroupofat leasttwohundredpeoplestandingandstaring like"cowsatapassingtrain," DonHenly. Idecidedtograbacoffee.(Sorry,Iwillnotstand andlookataglassdoor.ThankgoodnessIhave
ashortattentionspan!)Whileinlineforcoffee, threeyoungwomenwalkedbywithoutamask on.Icouldhearthecustomsagentbehindme sighandthenpolitelyaskthewomentoput theirmasksonwhileattheairport.Theydid. Quietly,Iaskedtheagenthowmanytimesaday hehadtosaythat.Histiredeyeslookedupat meashesaid,"EveryflightfromNewYork,we havetoremindthefolkstheyareinCanada now."
Iaskedhimhowlifeattheairporthadbeenover thelasttwoyears.Hechuckledandsaid,"You wouldn’tbelievesomeofthestories."Heshared thathegoeshomeatnightandtellshiswife someoftheanticsandshedoesn'tbelievehim. Atthefarendoftheterminal,Ipassedthethree girlsagain,theirmaskspulleddown!Theyreally didn’tcarewhattheagentsaid.Soonenough, hewouldseethemandrepeatthesame conversation.Sad,youknow,noonewantsto wearamask,butwithsomanypeople connectingfromallovertheworldinonespot, perhapsweneedtoprotectthefolkswhowork dayinanddayoutattheairportforus!

Irecentlyhadahealthoccurrenceoutsideof NorfolkCountythatprovidedafullerinsightinto thefolkswhomakeupourhealthcaresystem. Noneofuswanttousethesystem.Wetryto avoiditbystayinghealthy,butsometimesyou needtogetyourbutttothelocalhospitalASAP. Inmycase,thedoctorsinsistedthatIstayfora fewdays,sohavingnochoice,Itookthemupon theiroffer.
Duringmyvisit,Iwasimpressedbythestaffatthe hospital.Theywerecompassionateandworked hard.Itremindedmethatweallneedtosaythank youmoreoftentoourhealthcareprofessionals.
SomethingelsecaughtmyeyethatIwantedto sharewithyoutoday.Thereweretwonursesand atechnician,andtheirbackgroundstoriesmade meproudtobeCanadian.
ThefirstfellowImetwasoriginallyfrom Columbia.Hespokemultiplelanguages,wassoftspokenandwassimplyacaringhumanbeing whowantedtohelpothers.
Thesecondwasatechnicianwhohadcomefrom Chinatofollowherdreaminthemedicalfield. Shewasbright,articulate,fullofenergy,again fluidinmanylanguages,andmakingherlifein Canada.
Thethirdwasanightnursewhomovedhere elevenyearsagofromSwahili.Shecouldspeakso manydistinctlanguages,Icouldn'tcountthem all.Shewasdamnefficientatherjobandatthe sametimecompassionateandinvestedinwhat shedid.Asthemorningapproached,shesaidit wasrainingout.Isaid,"Oh,thatmakesforalong dayforyou."Shesmiledandsaid,"Ienjoy walkingintherainandhearingitssounds."
LikeIsaidearlier,allthestaffwereexcellent,but theseyoungfolksembodiedwhatisatrue Canadian.Thedrivetosucceedwhilebeing humble,thatneversaydieattitude,the compassiontohelpothersinneed,smart, articulateanddriven!
