NOVEMBER 2020
Lest we forget
Remembrance Day, 2020
I asked myself recently, with COVID at hand, what I should do for Remembrance Day 2020. If I am unable to attend a ceremony, how can I pay my respects? Of course, I will be donating and getting a poppy, but what else can I do to show my appreciation? Then it hit me, I will reread VIMY, by Pierre Berton, where he narrates a truly defining moment in Canada. The historical perspective of the book educates us on the value of lives lost and the hell in which these men lived as they battled for our country. So maybe this year, pick up a book and read about the men and women who served as part of your Remembrance Day home ceremony. Share with your children and grandchildren. This is an opportunity to take Remembrance Day to a new level in our lives!

celebrated the music as it was happening in his life when I was still just a child! I have fully come to appreciate the vast musical knowledge Randy has and how he challenges me to expand my musical interest on a show to show basis. This month we chat about Bob Dylan, the electric years. Give it a listen at HubMedia.info on Facebook and sit back and enjoy!
A few years ago, I invited Randy along to be my co-host for our audio podcast show the Boomer Music Experience! The show was something I had wanted to do for a very long time because of my love for '50s, '60s and '70s music. NOVEMBER 14 is WORLD DIABETES DAY! Do I need to be concerned that my diabetes may affect my eyes?
According to Diabetes Canada, diabetic retinopathy (DR) affects 23% of people with type 1 diabetes and 14% of those with type 2 diabetes. The risk of developing DR increases with poor blood sugar control, smoking, high blood pressure, and the length of time you have had diabetes.
I have been diagnosed with diabetes, but I'm not having any trouble with my eyes. Do I really need an eye exam? Diabetic retinopathy can be detected during an eye exam, even if you are not having any symptoms. In fact, the majority of people who are diagnosed with DR do not report any visual symptoms.
Serving the Eye Care Needs of Norfolk County Since 1947 What if I have been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy?
In the early stages, DR can be managed by controlling blood sugar levels and blood pressure. However, as DR progresses, you may need laser treatment, antiVEGF injections, or surgery. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is crucial, as treatment is much more likely to be effective at an early stage. An annual eye exam is covered by OHIP if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
How long has it been since your last eye exam? Let our caring optometrists take care of your vision!

HEAR YE! HEAR YE! “Blindness separates us from things but deafness separates us from people.” ~ Helen Keller When I was in Grade 1, I was hospitalized with mastoiditis, a bacterial infection of the mastoid air cells surrounding the inner and middle ear. The illness resulted in my missing eleven weeks of school. I can remember that I was having constant discharges from my left ear and that I lost all hearing in that ear. I did not tell my parents about the deafness; I don’t know what I was thinking. They may not have been aware of the seriousness of my situation until my teacher contacted my mom. She was noticing signs of a problem in class. For example, when we were given spelling dictations, I might have a score of 7 out of 10. The incorrect answers were not attempts; they were blanks. If Mrs. Kaye turned away from looking at us, I could not tell what she had said as I could not read her lips.
If left untreated, mastoiditis can cause serious, even life-threatening health complications, including hearing loss (my case), bone infection (my case), blood clot, meningitis or a brain abscess. When I was in the hospital, I had mastoid surgery, an operation on the mastoid bone behind the ear. The operation was necessary because the infection within my middle ear had spread. The part of the bone that had become diseased was removed. As I was already hospitalized, my tonsils were also taken out. My main memories of those weeks are that all the staff and visitors treated me royally, I guess because I was so young, and that I learned to really love Jello.
As I grew older, I thought that someday I would likely have a significant hearing loss. Perhaps I have never known what it is like to have full hearing. Sure enough, I am now experiencing an impactful deficit. The hearing loss has been a gradual development over a number of years. I have not been in denial, but neither have I felt
any urgency to take remedial action. At the gentle, but persistent, prodding of a friend, I have recently faced up to my dilemma. I had my hearing tested, and the results showed that both ears are similar. I made the decision to get hearing aids. When I came back to receive them, I put them on, felt the level was appropriate when talking to the specialist and left the building. Upon getting in my car, I rolled down the window and headed out on the road. It sounded to me like my tires were screaming and the wind was howling at hurricane force. I did not like it. I have become used to living in a quieter world. The radio volume also had to be turned down sharply. I knew something was going on. There was going to be an adjustment period for my brain and for me. I later read that this process could last four months.
Research is showing that hearing aids can do more than just amplify your hearing. They may also make you healthier. Social isolation is the most obvious danger. People may withdraw from certain activities. For me, it was difficult having some telephone conversations, especially if the person had a high-pitched voice or didn’t enunciate words clearly. I haven’t resolved that yet as I am presently getting a constant, loud humming sound through the phone. A recent large study, conducted by University of Michigan researchers, analyzed what occurs in the three years after you get your first hearing aid. It found that an aid cut the risk of developing dementia by 18%, the risk of a fall-related injury by 13% and the risk of developing anxiety or depression by 11%. If you are thinking about addressing a hearing loss, it is recommended that you do it sooner rather than later, before brain structural changes take place. When a person experiences hearing loss, the area of the brain that processes sound begins to deteriorate. This leads to problems understanding speech and language. Because the brain has to overcompensate for these weakening brain functions, higher level thinking is forfeited for speech understanding. Also, by placing additional emphasis on other senses like touch and vision, this process can lead to fatigue and can adversely affect concentration. Hearing aids enable people to hear better, stimulating the hearing centres in their brains.
Hearing aids are by no means a perfect solution. They cannot correct hearing loss; they only augment the hearing you have. They don’t block out background noise, they don’t separate speech and noise in noisy environments, and they don’t allow people to hear sounds well at a distance. They don’t have a brain. They amplify all the sound that’s in the environment.
The technology is improving, and I’m confident the benefits will outweigh any disadvantages. For me, perhaps the biggest advantage will be how it will help my interactions with others and help me be more considerate of others. It is not pleasant for them to not be heard, to not be certain whether they were heard and to have to speak loudly. For me, maybe I will no longer have to face the occasional awkward moment when I’ve already said “Pardon?” three times and still have no idea what has just been said, so simply smile, nod my head and hope it wasn’t a question.

Marie and Rob Mitchell hope everybody knows their names. Why, you ask? These two business folks have just launched Cheers Norfolk, which is a beer of the month club. Marie says the couple in the past have used a beer of the month club out of Toronto as a wedding gift for friends and family and found it to be an outstanding present! They thought Norfolk would be a great place to start a club. The Mitchells also realized that with the COVID situation, if they couldn't get around to some of the local craft breweries to enjoy a little taste testing, not many others were either. Hence the idea was born. Cheers will not only be offering beer but local wine and hard cider as well. Marie explains everything will be online to place your order at cheersnorfolk.ca or if you need a little help you can email Marie or Rob at info@ cheersnorfolk.ca With so many talented, local microbreweries and wineries that Marie and Rob have enjoyed over the years, Marie realized a Beer of the Month Club would definitely work in Norfolk! The Mitchells have made Cheers a family concept, everyone chipping in, even Marie's mom helps out! Raise a glass this holiday season with a cold beer from Cheers!

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same It seems unbelievable that November is upon us! That being said, just a “Healthy Reminder” that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Timing is everything when it comes to keeping your immune system functioning optimally. Having your arsenal of defence products on hand and at the ready can give you a great advantage when symptoms come-a-calling. With the added challenges and additional stressors on our mental and emotional health due to social distancing, we need to be even more proactive and forward-thinking in preparation for immune health. Viruses and bacteria are the ultimate opportunists, and if you happen to be feeling low and run down, they don’t wait for a written invitation to overwhelm your system. Good health is not an accident – it is a blessing often overlooked until we don’t have it. Those with previously compromised immune health may very well find themselves far less vulnerable with the practices now in place – increased handwashing/sanitizers, masks and social distancing. The fact is, there have always been those whose systems are at higher risk, and the practices in place currently, may very well be a blessing in disguise for the first time in their lives. If we can embrace the positive along with the changes we are adjusting to, perhaps a balance can be achieved. Regardless of your motivation, having a tried and true strategy of on-hand products for immune support can turn the tables in your favour and reduce the severity and longevity of these unwelcome invaders. I think everyone can agree they would prefer to avoid becoming sick as frequently or as intensely! Prepare ahead - No one wants to run out to grab supplements and tissues when they already feel like they’ve been run over by a bus and backed over twice - wearing
sleep pants, aching, sneezing, coughing, with a sore red nose, headache, stuffy head and the need to shower but too tired and miserable - no thanks! Identify Your Weak Points Knowing ourselves and understanding where we are most vulnerable is key to staying healthy throughout the fall and winter months. Most individuals have a weak point, whether it is a genetic or environmental predisposition. Many areas are veritable breeding grounds for germs. This can be your workplace, places you visit, social situations and events, public transportation, schools, nursing homes, hospitals and clinics. Close quarters and recirculating air compounds the likelihood of picking up something you would rather avoid! Children are great at sharing a hardy host of bugs with their families, whether from extracurricular activities, school or daycare. 2020 and COVID-19 have changed the face of our schools and social interactions. Regardless of age, parents, siblings and grandparents (people linked by close, intimate interactions) continue to be more easily infected due to the close nature of contact and shared surroundings. This is not, nor will it ever be limited to this Pandemic. Attempts at trying to understand and control the transmission of organisms has changed the face of our world. All of this in effort to control a virus we have yet to fully understand. Optimizing our immune system will continue to be our greatest strength. Understanding that we must explore a complex and unique approach, on an individualized basis requires assistance from a trusted and qualified Practitioner. Stay tuned for part two, next month... Blacksmith is one of my favourite Vic Gibbons paintings. If this painting could talk, the stories it could tell... The horse's name was Judge and was a staple in the Gibbons family. Vic has shared many stories of Jane, his daughter, and Judge's accomplishments. You can feel the passion in Vic's brush as he graced the canvas bringing Judge to life in this stunning masterpiece! The attention to detail in colour is natural for Vic, and in this case, it took a solid month of work to get it perfect! with marie “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and expecting your enemy to die.” - I don’t know who first said this, but I think it is brilliant. Think about it for a minute. Most of us have people in our lives who have wronged us one way or another. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we can’t get over it. We can’t forgive them. Sometimes the hurt is too deep. It has manifested into our very being. It affects our everyday life. We may not even be aware of how it affects everything we do. Our incredible subconscious mind develops coping mechanisms to deal with pain and stress. It is totally alright for you to change those mechanisms and start coping differently. That person that you are holding a grudge with, they likely don’t know that you are. It may be time to let go of the past and move on to the future full of all that you deserve: health and happiness. Don’t drink the poison, contact New Leaf Hypnosis today and let’s move forward. It’s time.

Movember: Looking at mental health through a male lens
Movember looks at mental health through a male lens, focusing on prevention, early intervention and health promotion. The purpose of Movember is working towards a world where men take action to be mentally well and are supported by those around them. This month’s story focuses on “Eimaj,” a 50-year-old male living with depression and anxiety, in addition to Parkinson’s and seizures. This story is in his own words, with his expressed consent to share it. Eimaj was the youngest of 7 children, with mostly brothers and one sister. Since high school, Eimaj felt socially isolated, and as a result, his attendance was not great. Thankfully, he had some hobbies such as listening to live music, painting and reading and writing poetry. These
HUB
hobbies became his outlet for expression. Eimaj is a big fan of artists with great lyrics such as Leonard Cohen. He also loves listening to blues and jazz, as well as TRex, Bowie, and REM. Eimaj states that he inherited his love of reading and writing poetry from his mother, and painting from his aunt, who also had a very creative side. Eimaj is currently a member of a writer’s group and was very involved in the CMHA RACE program, where he developed his love of painting. He gets inspiration for his painting and poetry from things he sees, places he’s been, and other life experiences. Eimaj always carries around a notebook in a bag, so that he can do a rough sketch, or write ideas down as they come to mind. His Maine Coon cat, Cinder is “purrfect,” according to Eimaj and makes a gentle companion for him. As a result of the supports he’s received and a caring family, life is more structured now for Eimaj. He continues on with his hobbies and creative expression to help him through hard days. Spirituality is important to him and creates a balance in his life. “When something bad happens, you learn from it,” says Eimaj. “Two negatives = a positive.” The challenges he has faced in life makes him appreciate the little things more. Attached is a poem written by Eimaj, entitled “One Small Dot” that he wanted to share with all the readers. Thank you Eimaj for sharing your heart warming story!

INFLUENZINUM Laura at Simcoe Natural Foods shared another way to prepare for the flu season and in these times, the more prepared, the better! Do you feel like you may be experiencing flu-like symptoms, or would like some protection against the seasonal flu? Influenzinum, by Boiron Canada, is a homeopathic dilution prepared from the approved seasonal influenza vaccine. The product itself is in no way a substitute for a vaccination, but it can help the body to prepare to battle certain types of flu that may occur. Laura would be happy to share information about Boiron Influenzinum. Stop by Simcoe Natural Foods or give Laura a call at (519) 428-2077.

Have you thought about adding other items to your menu? Heather and I have always liked cheesecake the best. It's a popular item, and there are not a lot of places you can just stop and grab a fresh cheesecake. We do bake and offer lots of other goodies; they just are not sold off of the truck. We make all kinds of cakes and brownies as well.
AND THE
Q: What flavours of cheesecake do you make? We offer over 75 flavours of cheesecake. They are not all available at the same time, but we offer a variety of about 10 at a time off the truck. Our most popular flavours are the classic cherry cheesecake and our chocolate salted caramel. Q: What are your hours of operation? Friday 3-7 Saturday 12-6 Sunday 12-5
BY KEVIN ROCKEFELLER
Q: Do you cater? Yes, we do lots of catering. We do different parties and weddings.
Q: What is New York Cheesecake? New York Cheesecake is just the style of cheesecake. It is a baked cheesecake often with a graham crust. Q: Are you looking for help? Do you need a taste tester?
