Today I had the pleasure of meeting with the head of the new Friendship Festival Committee, Kathy Lamouroux, and two of her committee members, Secretary, Doreen Oates and Entertainment Coordinator, Marilyn Guindon. Q: How many years has the Friendship Festival been running? A: This will be the festival’s 54th year. Q: What are the dates for this year’s festival? A: It will be held over the Civic Holiday weekend in August. Q: A:
AND THE
What changes do you want to see with the new festival? More community involvement from the downtown businesses and individuals alike. We would like to see more events added and maybe even a parade.
Q: Personally, I would like to see local artists, craft persons, musicians and unique items. Will this be part of the direction of the revamped festival? A: Absolutely. We are always looking for interesting vendors and artists. Q: Will there be any “hands on” types of demonstrations or mini-workshops? A: So far, there is a station planned for kids to build little boats. The pieces will be created by Abel Enterprises. Thank you so much for your time, and I am really looking forward to the new and improved festival.

NOW WHAT DO I DO? Can you believe the weather Ontario is experiencing, especially here in Southern Ontario? We should be preparing, thinking about and carrying out ice fishing. Instead, anglers are scratching their head pondering what to do – open water or ice fishing! Friends of mine are still on lakes and rivers in their watercraft. Although, as I am sitting in front of my computer writing this article, no one is on river systems in this part of the province. The recent heavy rains have resulted in extreme high waters and flows, destroying shoreline property and structures. My home river, the Grand River, usually flows at 30 cubic metres per second (cms) at this time of the year. Currently, it is flowing at approximately 1,100 cms! To put this into perspective, in my reach of the river, I will not take clients on a walkand-wade guided fishing trip, over 75 cms. The same holds true for the Great Lakes abutting southern Ontario – Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario. With the high winds and rising water level, extreme damage and erosion have occurred. Even if the lake conditions were flat, you could not launch a boat. The boat ramps are barely visible, but even so, the abutting parking lots are covered in water. Many an angler is at home wondering what I am going to do. No ice and high, dirty waters mean I am homebound. Well, we can do the next best thing – we can talk about fishing. What angler can’t do that? And does it well! This is the time of the year for tradeshows. There are many exhibitions that are focused on boats, recreational vehicles, automobiles, fishing, or any combination thereof. A lot of these events are taking place within a short driving distance of our home. A good thing to do with family or like-minded friends, making it more enjoyable. Sitting in on a presentation(s) is a great way to learn something new or reshape something you may already be doing. I have always maintained if you can take away at least two new pieces of information, then it was a worthwhile experience. There are also in-store events to attend. A lot of these involve a guest presenter/speaker discussing topics ranging from gear, to techniques, to hands-on. These are extremely informative. I conduct approximately twenty of these each year with good attendance. Most are free admission, so even better. It is always a good time as you normally will encounter a friend/acquaintance that you only see when on the water. The hands-on events usually will involve the art of fly tying. At these events, they may be only the presenter sitting in front of a group illustrating certain fly patterns and/or techniques. Others will involve everyone tying while the guest fly tier takes you through each step-by-step. And yet another night can be “beers and flies.” This involves fly tying evenings at a local brewery. Always well attended. There are also schools taking place at this time of the year. If you have never tried fly casting, I hold a clinic every Friday morning in an indoor, heated facility. So this is a great way to find out if this is something for you without buying a fly fishing outfit as I supple them. If you are already a caster, it is a great way to improve your skills and keep you enjoying the sport. Please contact me if you are interested. As you can see, there is still lots to do without being on the water. I hope to see you at a tradeshow or in a store. In the meantime, keep wishing for ideal fishing conditions. IN THE
LONG
RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL
A MOVEABLE FEAST When I ran my first 24-hour race in 1998, my fuelling strategy consisted of gels and Gatorade. I remember that after about twelve hours, as I lifted yet another gel packet to my lips, the mere sight of it made me gag. I could not make myself swallow it. A bit of food from the aid station sufficed for a while, but after sixteen hours all I could swallow for the remaining eight hours, without being sick, was water. Regardless of that inauspicious nutritional debut, the challenge of day-long, and later multiday racing, intrigued me. I have now participated many times in long events, most recently my 10 Day in New Jersey last year. “It was easier to think if I was walking and doing something.” That sentence is from Ernest Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast.” He was recalling the Paris of his younger days. For me, the title makes me think of ultrarunning. Ultra competitions could be thought of as eating contests while on the move. Gastrointestinal distress is the leading cause of non-finishes in ultras. Keeping your body adequately fuelled, with your stomach staying happy, is of paramount importance in obtaining a successful result along with a pleasant experience. Food contains three macronutrients: carbohydrates, protein and fat. All your energy comes from burning calories provided by these three sources. The percentage of each you need depends on how quickly you need to produce energy and how much of a supply of each you have. The higher the intensity, the higher a percentage of carbohydrates you will need. The reason is that, even though fat is a great
energy source and you have a virtually inexhaustible supply, it takes longer to break down, and when intensity is ramped up, your body can’t produce energy from fat fast enough. The conundrum is that, at racing intensity, the best source of energy is a carbohydrate, but the body can’t store enough to sustain you through a long effort. You need to take in more carbohydrates throughout the event. Some protein does get broken down for energy, but it only contributes about 10-15% of the total needed, so it is not a major source for in-race nutrition. It is important to know that you can recover from a lack of ingesting calories in a matter of minutes by simply eating. It takes much longer to recover from being dehydrated. When you are taking part in a long-distance race, you burn through a large amount of calories. I have not yet finished a multiday race without losing significant weight. I know I still have much to improve upon. The mere fact of being active, awake and on your feet for up to 20 hours a day creates a nutritional challenge. To put it simply, my nutritional challenge is to eat as much as I can without making myself sick while continuing to move forward. One has to develop the ability to consume and digest a steady stream of calories over a period of several days, 6 days in my case. Some of those calories need to be from solid food with more bulk, more fat and more protein than just carbohydrate-only gels, etc. because the race foods are taking the place of normal regular meals as well. Fat and protein hold off feelings of hunger better than carbohydrates. If you over-rely on and over-consume carbohydrates, you increase the likelihood of gastric distress, as happened to me in my first 24-hour race. However, even knowing all that, here is the challenge. Consuming small amounts of food and fluid over and over again for many hours throughout many days is exhausting. You lose the taste for many items or feel you just cannot eat them. When I was competing in the World 24 Hour in Seoul, South Korea, during extremely hot, humid conditions, I was suffering from not eating enough. One of the Canadian team volunteers held out and encouraged me to eat a hard-boiled egg. I knew her and trusted her, but I stared at the egg dumbly and thought
there would be no way I could ingest it. Finally, I worked up my courage and ate it, but only because my friend Barb was experienced and insistent. I have to have a wide range of foods that I am willing to eat and that I believe will work for me without upsetting my stomach. Furthermore, even when I have a viable plan that I fully intend to implement during the race, there are still more complicating factors. Most important is general cumulative fatigue. Day after day, I am expending far more energy for longer periods of time while sleeping less than during regular life. When you are very tired, you make decisions you would never make when less fatigued. It becomes easy to forget the plan or even to forget what you were told by your crew or what you decided to do just minutes before. It becomes easier to forget to fill your hydration bottle, or to eat something, or to take a salt pill, especially during the lonely nights. As well, environmental conditions can play into decision-making. Over the course of my 6 Day in New Jersey, there could easily be temperature variances of over 40 degrees F. These changes impact sweat rate and the perceptions of hunger and thirst. Heavy rains and very cold nights can switch thinking from food routines to simply surviving the unpleasant conditions.

I choose to believe that there are solutions to nutrition and know that they are a complex but vital part of the special sport of ultrarunning. It is comforting to think of it all as merely a moveable feast. TRAINING UPDATE: As of this writing, I have completed 11 weeks of training. My long days are getting longer; however, interval and hill training have been less than I had planned. All in all, I am feeling quite positive and am averaging 112 km per week, with a maximum of 136 km.

JUST SHAKE IT OFF Guest columnist Monique Gerber I wonder if Taylor Swift spent time with horses when she wrote the song Shake it off. I will be honest here and confess I had to look up the lyrics after I wrote this line and saw, after many repeated mmm, mmm, mmm’s shake, shake, shakes, fake, fake, fakes … the song really had nothing to do with horses and the natural response of horses to shake off negative and trauma inducing emotions. It did though, in her hip shaking, foot tapping repetitive phrases sort of way, indicate that she can just shake off bad vibes and the soul sucking actions of others. In other words, releasing the potentially harmful trauma inducing emotions that can be brought on by noxious events.

So in effect, exactly what horses do when experiencing a stressful situation. They do, in fact physically shake it off. Sometimes quite dramatically and emphatically! I have watched my horses drop down and role during a session with a client who is moving through some fairly deep, stressful moments, then get up, shake vigorously and proceed to walk away quite calm and relaxed with an expressive swish of their tail as if to say, “ and that’s how it’s done”. Just shake it off.

Horses are the empaths of the animal world. Whatever we are feeling, they feel as well.
Science and research has proven that this action in horses (all mammals to be precise -yes that includes us) does in fact reduce cortisol (those nasty stress inducing hormones) and lowers heart rate, blood pressure, loosens the muscles and returns the body to a state of relaxation, or as horses prefer, back to grazing.

Horses are the empaths of the animal world. Nature has instilled this mechanism that allows them to pick up on the emotional state of their herd members as well to help them release this tension and stress through the act of “shaking it off”. I guess they truly live by the adage “do Limited Space unto others” because that is exactly what they do. When we come together with a horse, we become their herd Whatever we are feeling, they feel as well. To rid 1/8mate. page $250 - one month themselves of the negative effects of stress and tension, they will drop, role and shake. Brilliant!

It's a New Year and time to make a renewed commitment to your 'Lighter Living' Lifestyle. This recipe will definitely help you on your journey. Anytime of day is the right time to incorporate more veggies and this 2-egg omelette will help get your day off to the right start. Using Omega 3 enriched eggs is a great heart healthy way to improve cardiovascular health.

I use spinach for the fibre, and the iron content, onions for the immune boosting qualities, and peppers for the taste and their benefits too, but you can add mushrooms as well. Did you know an onion a day keeps the doctor away? Too busy in the morning, this makes a great meal for anytime of the day. I like to make my omelettes the night before and have them ready for a quick re-heat on those hectic mornings. Get your family involved in prepping and cutting up their favourite veggies and this makes a great family time. I like to top mine with grated Oxford County cheese, and salsa. Stay away from adding toast to reduce your carbs, starches and sugars. The protein from the cheese and eggs keeps you full, as well as adding needed protein building blocks.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING
"YOU" TIME BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist
of sleep, not eating well, too many demands and not a lot of life experience or skills to handle some of the demands, too little support, perhaps financial strains – I’m sure many people would tick most of these boxes when they aren’t coping well.
SHOWING YOURSELF SOME LOVE: Often, we are able to support and find compassion for others during a struggle. We see solutions, step in to help or offer solutions where we can. Somehow, it can be easier to recognize that someone else is struggling with a heavy load and offer assistance and yet to ask for help ourselves, we perceive it as a sign of weakness… What then, is this phenomenon? Why are so many of us so hard on ourselves to the point that we ignore the warning signs our body may be giving us? Tuning in to ourselves is a critical step in finding and achieving balance in our lives. Vibrant health, quality of life, abundant energy and overall well-being will continue to be elusive if we don’t tune in and change our lifestyle.
DISHARMONY AND IMBALANCE: It’s possible that you may have come to the realization that your mood, your energy, enthusiasm or behaviour has taken a rather negative turn (or that someone close to you has voiced their opinion…). These are some of the most common indicators that your life is out of balance on at least one level. For those of you with children or even pets, we often use the strategy of a “time out” for unacceptable behaviours or outbursts. This space (we hope), offers a cool-off period to reflect or consider solutions to resolve the situation or to diffuse the trigger for negative behaviours (at the very least, to regain some control). As a mom, I remember several occasions, having felt so overwhelmed that I would have been so grateful if someone could have given me a time out to compose myself. Days where, as hard as I tried, I wasn’t happy with how I handled situations and let emotion prevail and reign over my parenting skills. Why did I occasionally feel and behave in ways that I was less than proud of while navigating the amazing journey of parenthood? For each of us, there may be many reasons – lack
Life is like that – not just raising children, but perhaps in the workplace, in some other caregiver role, or in your relationships or friendships with others. We are human, and our shortcomings tend to surface when our self-care takes the back seat.
SELF-CARE IS NOT SELFISH: Each of us needs to recognize and accept that self-care is not selfish and asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Recognizing our needs and seeking assistance are qualities that will allow us to optimize our potential, enhance our relationships and enrich our experiences in life. When you treat yourself with the care and respect you would share with others you love, you demonstrate that you are deserving of and expect to be treated with that same love and respect. “Me time” is important – taking the time to do things you truly enjoy and that bring you pleasure and allow you to express yourself as an individual is so important. Mental, emotional and spiritual needs are equally as important as our physical needs for overall health and well-being. We also need to be creative and have a sense of belonging. Quality, nutrient-dense foods, adequate water, sleep, exercise, healthy relationships, a sense of purpose and sense of community, safety and shelter are all part of our basic needs – but sometimes we need a bit more. You may benefit from supplementing with a B-Complex Vitamin, L-Theanine, Reishi Mushroom, Ashwagandha, Vitamin D3 or Magnesium, to name a few options. A nutritional consult, professional guidance or supplements may all be a part of getting you back on track. D O YO U S O M E T I M E S FEEL LO S T ? Do you feel as though there is more to you than what you’re experiencing? I UNDERSTAND! In my childhood, I was told that I was weird and that I was different. That I was crazy for feeling the things that I did - including energy in my hands. So, I shut it all off. I became and did what others told me I should do. I went on to post-secondary school for graphic design and then was in the automotive industry for 15 years. I became one of the top 50 sales consultants in Canada, which brought me to Simcoe and a partnership at the Volkswagen dealership here in town. I was devastated and broken when what I thought was my dream fell apart... BUT sometimes what we think we want, isn’t what is meant to happen and something else was calling me! I was calling me. I have taken everything that I have experienced and learned in my life and accepted that it has made me, me. Some of my darkest times have taught me the most valuable lessons! I am now doing what I love and help others to see themselves and their lives differently. Everything, both good and bad, teaches us things. When we can get out of victim mode and learn to take control of our lives, then we allow the magic of life to fully be realized. "When we change our thoughts, we change our life." - Dr Wayne Dyer My name is Chantelle Louise Weiler. I am an intuitive, life coach and reiki master/teacher.

with marie The winter weather can bring about unique challenges in protecting and caring for your eyes.
WINTER DRY EYES
Dry winter air can cause eyes to be more dry and irritated. Try using a humidifier indoors; the heat tends to dry the air and contribute to dry eyes. Lubricating eye drops can also help combat dry eye symptoms; try using drops several times a day. Speak with your optometrist if dry eyes are an ongoing issue for you.
SUNGLASSES IN WINTER? ABSOLUTELY!
The winter sun may not feel as warm, but harmful UV radiation can still reach your eyes and contribute to eye diseases such as cataract and macular degeneration. In addition, sunlight reflected by snow can lead to a sunburn on your cornea; another reason to make sure your sunglasses and snow goggles block 100% of UV rays. FEBRUARY IS HEART AND STROKE AWARENESS MONTH • A Canadian dies every 12 minutes of a tobacco related disease. • One out of every two people who smoke will die from a smoking-related illness and one-half of those deaths will occur prematurely in middle age. • Smoking causes the following cancers: mouth, throat, larynx, lung, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder, stomach, cervix and acute myeloid leukemia. •
Cigarette smoking is very dangerous to women who use birth control pills, especially after the age 30. Women who smoke and take the Pill are at a much higher risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure than women who do not smoke while taking the Pill.
It is obviously worth it to get smoking out of your life!! Call 519-420-7911 or email marie@growwithhypnosis.ca for your FREE consultation and see how hypnosis can help you QUIT FOR GOOD. Resources: smokers’help.net, heartandstroke.ca, hnhu.org
FROM THE CHAIR. THINKING ABOUT GOING GREY? While it can seem daunting to stop colouring your hair and let your grey come in, with the help of your stylist there are ways to do this gracefully. Consider getting some highlights or lowlights to help to blend that demarcation line and make it less obvious that you have stopped doing a full hair colour. Another alternative is to get a fresh new short haircut to eliminate a lot of the old coloured hair. Keep in mind that grey hair is a very different texture than coloured hair and you may have to switch hair products or add a moisturizing mask such as Moroccanoil weightless hydrating mask into your hair regime. Another issue people run into with grey hair is a yellowing or dull colour. Combat this with purple shampoo such as L'Oreal Magnesium Silver. Come in for a free consultation, for product advice or for further advice on how to go grey gracefully. 355 Main St, Port Dover, ON N0A 1N0 www.bladesalon.ca 519-583-2021
